Why replace your car's original speakers?

The speakers that originally came in your car were made from inexpensive materials, designed to create acceptable sound at the lowest possible cost to the manufacturer. If you love music, you deserve better. Name-brand aftermarket speakers deliver fuller, richer sound with considerably more detail and nuance, and they're capable of playing louder and cleaner than factory speakers. Connect new speakers to your factory radio and you'll get the best possible sound from your dealer-equipped system. Pair them up with a new car stereo for a level of enjoyment that can rival a high-fidelity home audio experience.

Our take on the Boston Acoustics S85

by Ken Nail

Boston Acoustic's S series speakers let you enjoy clear, natural sound, even with a low-powered system. And with a wide variety of sizes, you'll find a set for most commonly-sized speaker openings.

The Boston S85 6"x8" speaker features a 3/4" tweeter with a built-in cooling system for long term reliability and excellent power handling. A contoured tweeter plane guides high-frequency output to create a larger listening "sweet spot," while Boston's Amplitude Modification Device (AMD™) reduces harshness in the upper mids for clear, detailed sound.

The sturdy woofer cone teams up with a durable butyl rubber surround to produce tight, clean bass with minimal distortion. And you'll hear a smooth blend between the woofer and tweeter, thanks to the built-in crossover. Grilles are not included. (Factory grilles are appropriate for most installations.)

Note: Although the Boston Acoustics owner's manual for this speaker says that it's a 5"x7" speaker, our research has determined that it only fits into 6"x8" openings.

Highlights:

  • 2-way 6"x8" speakers (pair)

    Speaker Size Note

    Features

Tweeter: The type-S3 3⁄4-inch tweeter's soft dome is Ferro fluid cooled for excellent power handling and reliability. The AMD (Amplitude Modification Device) located on the tweeter plane provides acoustical tuning for the midrange response while the shape of the tweeter plane improves off-axis response.

Woofer: The copolymer woofer cone with durable butyl rubber surround stands up to the harsh automotive environment.

Crossover: Each speaker in Boston's S line features a specifically tuned crossover to deliver the best transition between the woofer and tweeter.

    Speaker Size Note

Speaker Size: Although this speaker looks like a combination 5"x7"/6"x8" speaker, the cutout required for the speaker is larger than that of other combination 5"x7"/6"x8" speakers. Because of the larger cutout requirement, this speaker will only work in 6"x8" speaker locations.

    Much better than OEM

Written By BeavertonBill, Oregon on Tuesday, August 02, 2011
Installed in a 2000 Ford Explorer
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Retired and looking for make-work. Replaced my 11 year old speakers on a whim and was floored by the sound from these speakers. Very rich sound and I had no idea my music had that much data in them. I spare no expense on in-home systems and have learned a valuable lesson on carrying those demands to my rig. I will probably drive more.

    Nice 2way speakers

Written By Papa Rock, South Texas on Monday, June 27, 2011

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Wasn't sure I made the right choice at first. Install of these(2pair) in my '08 Grand Marquis LS was almost simple for a first timer. But after installing my JVC-XR610 deck all me worries went away. These have plenty of bass and the sound is pretty darn good. For the money they better sound good! I may not need a subwoofer after all! Good choice for factory replacements as long as you have a good deck to run them.

These are 5x7 not 6x8 speakers. Says so right on the box. They are in all 4
doors in my '03 Explorer and powered only by the Kenwood head unit. That's
why I chose these low sensativity speakers. They responed well to all EQ
settings. Very adjustable. I use them in conjunction with a 10" Subwoofer and
amp. They met all my expectations. I'm very satisfied.

Good choice for stock system upgrade

Written By ChrissyL, Seattle area on Monday, April 18, 2011
Installed in a 2008 Ford Focus
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A good pairing with the stock head unit in my 2009 Focus. Just couldn't give up
my SYNC! You can hear the Advent heritage in the sound of the BAs: smooth,
clear mids and highs, much less harsh and fatiguing than the whizzer-coned
Ford stock 6x8s. Less mud and a bit more extension in the bass and mid-bass. I
think the four BAs would sound better with an external amp, but they were
chosen to be satisfactory with stock output.

A small powered sub would help solidify the bottom end, much as was the case
with the Advent set-up I paired with the little Kenwood under-seat box in my
station wagon years ago. (Bought those from Crutchfield in the 1990s and
they're still going strong, by the way.)

Boston Acoustic S85 (2007) Ford Mustang Convertible

Written By Jason A., Detroit, MI on Monday, March 28, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just installed 2 sets of these speakers in my 07 mustang convertible. I am running a kenwood DVD h.u. I wanted to upgrade my speakers to get a better sound quality especially from the rear speakers. They sound horrible in a convertible. There is no difference in sound quality with the s85's in the rear. So I thought the door speakers would be an improvement too! Sad to say not much of a difference between the stock speakers and the S85's. I have read all comments for these speakers and a few people say there are break in instructions but I have not seen any instructions. I think i will try them with an amp or take the back and replace with infinities. Oh yeah, they do distort the more you crank up the volume. Even half way, I have to adjust the bass way down. Lacking bass as well.

Nothing wrong with these speakers - they are a big upgrade from the factory
speakers and they work fine. They are reasonably priced. Just don't expect
them to turn your vehicle into a concert hall. Good, value priced speakers.

Installed 4 of these in my 2010 Ford F-150. Much improved sound over factory
speakers. Much better mids and highs. Good bass coming from 6x8 speakers on a
    factory head.

Have to say a lot of people here are missing out if they purchased these speakers without an
amp. I don't know how they sound without one, but mine sound amazing with an amp. Very
    clear and great bass.

    2011 Ford Edge

Written By Mike C, Dayton, OH on Monday, November 15, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Shouldn't come as a surprise, but these speakers are clearly an upgrade over the
factory setup of my new Ford Edge. The bass response is most evident, mids and
highs are better as well. My only complaint was that the highs aren't as crisp
as I would like. I'm sure this is due to the fact that these are 2-way speakers
and I'm still using the factory radio with no amp. I'm stuck with the factory
setup because it has the myfordtouch synch which I have no intention of
removing! The Crutchfield technician suggested the B.A.'s because it doesn't
take much to power them (2-50 watts RMS) and he was right on.

The installation instructions were for the 2010 Ford Edge because Crutchfield
hasn't evaluated the 2011, but they were pretty close. The only difference is a
few door screw locations..so no big deal. In fact, the install (with the wire
    adapters) was painless.

I would definitely recommend these speakers for anyone who wants an immediate
impact to their sound but without separate tweeters, you may be disappointed in
    the highs.

Oh yeah, these speakers sound better with time. As in, follow the break-in
    instructions!!

    2006 f-150

Written By eric, columbus ohio on Monday, June 21, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently added a kenwood dnx7160 to my truck but still did not feel the factory speakers
were giving me the sound that I wanted. The snare drum seemed to be missing along with a
lot of highs and mids.I replaced the front door speakers with the s85 and with a little equilizer
adjustment the sound was much improved.I feel the factory rear speakers give a good bass
sound so Im leaving them for now.I also used the baffles which give a help with the bass in
the front. My barometer on the speakers is the song My Old School by Steely Dan and wow
the mirrors shook with no distortion,I heard notes that I never heard with the stock speakers.
You will have to bend the screw tabs on the ends of the speaker for them to fit in the factory
cut out which is no big deal.

    Ho Hum

Written By F430TH, LA on Sunday, April 11, 2010

O.K. speakers. Great mids and highs, but bass is lacking even with upgraded Alpine
head unit. I'm not the guy that goes thumping down the street, but I need more depth
and clarity than these have to offer - especially for the higher price.

Returned to Crutchfield with ease and upgraded to the Infinity Kappa 682.9 cf. Wow!
    What a difference!

    Good buy

Written By Kevin, Birmingham, AL on Monday, February 22, 2010
Installed in a 2005 Ford Explorer
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Replaced the stock speakers in an 05' Ford Explorer. Upgraded the Head Unit as
well so hard to really tell how much that helped since it has more power going
to the speakers than the stock tuner, but the speakers themselves sound very
good for the money. Sound like speakers far more expensive. Impressed with
the lows and good mids as well. Fairly crisp highs. I have 22 watts RMS going
to them and they may be better off with a bit more power as they distort at very
high volumes but I am 41 and don't really do the greasy kid stuff thumping at
the stop light anyway. Oh, and they're 6x8's to the guy who said they are
smaller than the pioneers he bought first. They're 6x8's, period. Excellent
    value speakers.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First of all don't pay attention to anyone complaining about the mid and high
range sounds. They are running these off of a factory receiver and good sound
starts there. With that said some amplification makes these scream. I installed
these in the front door in my town car. I have an alpine head unit with the 45
watt boosting amp and it does the job. My mirrors shake, yes the ones on the
door. Paired up with my 6X9's in the rear deck I have no need for a sub at all.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Let me start out with the good. I Bought these to replace the stock speakers in my 2006 expidition that had nice deep bass but lacked in highs and mids. These s-85s have extraordinary highs and mids. I am hearing instruments I never heard in my music before. The only thing lacking is the bass. There isn't any. And if you try to turn it up, the woofer distorts. I had to turn the bass down three levels from where I had it set for the stocks. Now I am using my rear stocks as a poor mans sub woofer. They are good, just wish they had a little bass.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased these to replace the muddy-sounding stock speakers in my 2009 F-150. They sound great at lower volumes, but started to distort at about 1/2 volume on the factory radio. They'd probably sound great with an amp--but that would have turned my upgrade to a several hundred dollar upgrade requiring a lot of work--neither of which I want to do. And if I was going to do a significant upgrade, I'd go with a component set anyway.

I installed 2 sets of these in my '99 F250 diesel and the sound is awesome. They have great sound through the entire spectrum, and cover up the noise of the motor well. I am running them with a Pioneer deh-p6000ub which gives them much better sound than the factory unit. They were a breeze to install, about 15 minutes per speaker. GREAT PRODUCT!!!

    Clear,smooth,punchy WOW!

Written By Thomas, Courtland,Al on Saturday, December 13, 2008

I bought a set of these to replace the rear panel speakers in my 2007
Hyundai Accent hatch.I have already added a Rockford Fosgate 12" Punch
sub and Kicker Kx150 amp for solid bass.Still having the factory stereo and
speakers it was lacking in clarity in mirange and upper bass, the seperate
tweeters in the doors were too bright if turned up enough to get mid-bass
out of the fronts. The bass in the rear panels was very muddy in comparison.
After adding these WOW! What a difference. They provided a smooth
transision from the deep bass in the rear all the way up to the highs in the
front. The clarity in midrange is awesome to say the least. They are very
clear with highly defined bass that is mellow and punchy.Midrange is solid
and highs blend in nicely. Perfect for rear fill.I can't wait to upgrade my
head unit and front door speakers now for the total package.I am sure
they will sound even better with a higher output aftermarket HU.I would
recommend these to anyone who wants excellant sound reproduction from
a full range speaker without needing a seperate amp.
