My system has plenty of power. Who needs an amp?

You might think you don't need an amp because you have a 400-watt system in your car, or because your new stereo puts out 50 watts a channel. But those are peak wattage ratings, which may boil down to 15 or 20 watts per channel, using the more realistic RMS rating. An amp sends your speakers the power they need to deliver your music with clarity and impact, whether you're using factory speakers or high-performance components. And low-frequency reproduction requires lots of power, so an amp is an absolute must if you're adding a sub to your system.

Our take on the Infinity Reference 5350a

by Buck Pomerantz

Infinity's Reference Series amplifiers offer impressive power and extensive controls for fine-tuning your sound — an ideal way to boost your music's intensity and clarity. Strict reliability testing results in durable, dependable amplifiers, and their compact size gives you more installation options in tight places.

The versatile Infinity Reference 5350a 5-channel amplifier sends 50 watts RMS to each of your front and rear speakers with its 4-channel main power section, while its mono subwoofer channel delivers up to 300 watts to your subwoofers. And every Infinity Reference amplifier is certified to deliver power as advertised.

The sub channel can receive its signal directly from your car stereo's subwoofer preamp outputs or as a sum of the amp's front and rear input signals. You can operate this amp in 3-, 4-, or 5-channel modes, so this is one amp that you'll never outgrow.

The variable frequency filters and adjustable bass boost let you contour the amp's output to suit your speakers and subs for more efficient output and cleaner low-end kick. Direct-connect terminals make reliable connections without any crimping or soldering.

    Features

CEA-2006 Compliant: CEA-2006 is a new system of testing and measurement methods for mobile audio amplifiers. This voluntary standard advocates a uniform method for determining an amplifier's RMS power output and signal-to-noise ratio. The criteria for measuring power uses a DC input voltage of 14.4 volts and the RMS power output is measured into a 4-ohm load, with 1% or less Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) plus noise, and at a frequency range of 20 Hz to 20 kHz, when applicable. Signal-to-Noise ratio is measured in weighted absolute decibels (dBA) at a reference of 1 watt into 4 ohms. CEA-2006 allows consumers to compare car amplifiers and receivers on an equal basis. The Infinity Reference 5350a under CEA-2006 regulations is rated at 50 Watts RMS x 4 channels plus 150 x 1 channels with a 85dBA signal to noise ratio.

Class AB and D Design: The Reference 5350a features a Class AB design amplifier for the front and rear channels and a Class D design for the subwoofer channel giving you the benefit of sound quality and efficiency.

5-Channel Design: The amplifier is designed to power four full-range speakers and a subwoofer simultaneously. The amplifier's front and rear channels can be bridged to two channels and configured to power two full-range speakers and a subwoofer.

Line Level Inputs: The front, rear, and subwoofer channels of the amplifier each have separate line-level RCA inputs with independent gain (Input Sensitivity) controls. The Input Sensitivity controls will accept an input signal of 100mV to 6.0 Volts. If you are using a receiver with only two pair of preamp outputs you can run just one set of RCA for the front and rear channels and change the rear channels input source to Front.

Protection Circuitry: The amp features 4-way protection, and will shut itself down in the following cases:

    • DC Output: DC voltage is detected on the amplifier output
    • Temperature: Amplifier is overheated
    • Over/Under Voltage: Voltage at the +12V (Battery) terminal is less than 8.5V or more than 16V
    • Short Circuit: Short circuit in speaker or speaker wire

Power and Protection LEDs: The amplifier features a Power and Protection LED on top of the unit. The Power LED illuminates Green when the amplifier is supplied power. The Protection LED will illuminate Red when the amplifier goes into protect-mode.

    Controls

Input Source: There is an Input Source switch for the rear channel that allows you to connect only one set of RCAs to the front and rear channel inputs of the amplifier, if you only have two sets of preamp outputs with one set already going to the subwoofer preamp input on the amplifier.

Front, Rear and Subwoofer Input Levels: Individual rotary controls for the front, rear and subwoofer channels of the amplifier used to match the level of the preamp output signal from your head-unit.

Internal/External Switch: This switch allows you to select between using the amplifier's internal subwoofer crossover or your headunit's built-in subwoofer crossover.

Crossovers: The 5350a has built-in high pass and low pass crossovers for the front, rear and subwoofer channels. The high pass and low pass crossover's slope are 12 dB/octave and are continuously variable from 32Hz to 320Hz and can be controlled independently for the  front and rear channels. The amplifier can also be operated at full-range simultaneously from both front and rear channels. The subwoofer channel has a 12 dB/octave low pass crossover that is continuously variable from 20 to 200Hz. The subwoofer channel cannot be operated at full-range, it is set to low pass.

    • Crossover Mode Switches: Individual slide switches for the front and rear channels used to select Low-Pass, High-Pass or Full-Range configuration.
    • Crossover Frequencies: Independent rotary controls for the front, rear and subwoofer channels to set the cutoff frequency of the Low or High Pass Filter between 32 and 320 Hz for the front and rear speakers, and 20 to 200Hz for the low-pass crossover of the subwoofer.

Bass Boost: The Bass Boost control allows you to enhance the bass output of your system at 50Hz up to 6dB independently from the amplifier's subwoofer channel.

    Connections

Preamp Inputs: 3 pair of gold-plated RCA jacks.

Remote Level Control: RJ-11 jack for use with the optional remote sub-level control (sold separately).

IMS Input: This port is designed for future Infinity expansion products.

Speaker Output: 10 Set screw terminals for connecting speaker wires; handles up to 8 gauge (16 gauge minimum recommended).

    Power:

    • +12V: Set screw terminal for power wire from battery; handles up to 4 gauge wire (8 gauge minimum recommended)
    • Remote: Set screw terminal for remote turn-on lead; handles up to 8 gauge wire (18 gauge minimum recommended)
    • Ground: Set screw terminal for ground; handles up to 4 gauge wire (8 gauge minimum recommended)

Fuses: 2 Slots for 40A fuses (installed).

    Poor performing..and Burnt OUT !

Written By Jose, Jamaica NY on Sunday, November 18, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I HAD MY VEHICLE "OUTFITTED BY CRUTCHFIELD"... and purchased this unit accompanied by two sets of speakers and supplied an isoberic encloser (with a single 250 watt sub woofer inside). This amp performed descently for about 6 months then started humming out of nowhere ??? I rang out all circuits looking for possible faults and found nothing !! I concluded the issue by replacing the " Infinity 5030a Amp " with two Amps .. one amp to drive the 4 door speakers and a seperate amp to drive my subwoofer isoberic. This Infinity 5030a is " So Called Designed for a 5 speaker set up " ??? But it weak , not dependable and basically a rip off !!! If anyone needs one I'll be happy to give you my deffective " Infinity 5030a .. JUNK " ! ! ! This was the worst invested money I've ever blown away.

    Questionable Reliability

Written By NoBama, Morgantown, WV - Go Mountaineers !! on Saturday, December 03, 2011

I liked the looks of this, the specs seem excellent, and it did put out good sound for about 18 months. It started hissing on me, I took it to an installer and they troubleshooted the entire system and narrowed it to the amp. Kind of an expensive piece to only get a year and 1/2 out of it. I am going back to Rockford, I have sold 3 cars that had them in it for years before I sold them and the RF's are probably still working.
    Pros:
I had been a big fan of Infinity speakers for many years so I figured I'd give an amp a try.
    Cons:
Didn't last long before needing replaced.

Not a dependable piece of equiptment

Written By Guy, San Fransisco on Thursday, November 26, 2009

The amp would be wonderful. It worked well until just like another reviewer an internal defect caused one channel to quit working completely. Best to avoid Infinity amps completely in my experience. Other very cheap amps purchased at the same time as this one continue to work just perfectly. This one has been completely taken care of... Skip Infinity.

    Good for 4 months....

Written By Jason, Pomona, CA on Saturday, October 03, 2009

Installed this amp in place of my good ol' JBL Power Series Amps (the best amps ever built! - but I had 3 of them) to save room. At first it was great! Then after 4 months the left rear channel developed a cold solder joint inside the amp. Now it is a super annoying piece of junk!

Since JBL and Infinity are the same company, I was hoping for another quality piece of equipment like my old P180.2, P80.2, and BP300.1. Those were quality Korean made! This is falling apart after a few months of use.

    I like it!!

Written By Chuck, Thorsby, AL on Thursday, May 14, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This amp replaced a old 4-channel. I decided to add a second set of coax drivers in my wifes 03 Mazda Protege.
The amp is driving a set of Polk db series 6x8's up front, db 6 1/2's in the rear doors and a set of 6x9 subs in the rear deck. All channels are at 4ohm load. Power is good and I love all the controls the amp gives ( hi/low crossover points, internal or external signal feed for the sub, etc.)
It is a big slab of metal, with no cooling fins, it has to be big. The amp handles the high volume well, but will require lots of room to breath (dont stick it under a seat). This one sits snug, in the left rear area of the trunk where its out of the way and the controls are easy to reach.

    Great product.
    Crutchfield rocks!!

    Too big

Written By Big Walt, Moreno Valley, CA on Wednesday, May 28, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

    I purchased this amp
    for my 98 ford
    explorer and it was
    just way too big. If
    you are like me and
    want your amp to be
    installed out of
    sight but still want
    full function of
    your fold down
    seats, stay away
    from this amp. I did
    get a chance to hear
    it while it was
    installed, and I was
    not too impressed.
    The highs come
    across
    WAY too sharp.

    5350A Review

Written By drooldude, Riverside CA on Wednesday, April 16, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

In my wife's 1994 Mazda Miata for a few years, I have been running a 4
channel 360w Alpine powering speakers in the headrest wired in serial to
get a stable 4 ohm load, Alpine DDC Separates in the Doors and the
tweeters off the deck thru the DDC crossover to the dash.

I also used an MTX 300D to power 2, 10" MTX Thunder subs in the trunk.
An older Sony electronic crossover did all my LP/HP stuff. With the Infinity I
could now get everything in one in the Miata trunk. I re-wired all the power
using a Street Wires kit and replaced the aging Alpine Deck with a new
Alpine iDA-X100. It even integrated with our AiNet older 12 disc CD Changer.
I also did a DynaMat job on the Sub enclosure that uses
the Miata trunk spare tire location as a cabinet.

My older mess is now pristine and with the subs running at 2 Ohms, The
Infinity has more than enough power for 2 subs. The 4 channel side has
made our car sound like it never has before with power to spare. I have
notice that the material and source driving the sub is crucial to the sound
    (CD vs. iPod).

We look for quality not quantity, so the tight integration works well for us.
The X-Over features of the amp replace another piece of gear. Ziggy at
Crutchfield made the recommendation and we are quite happy with the
price vs. performance calculation. Thanks again Crutchfield!!! (Maybe they
    will post the pictures)

    Not Terrible

Written By Dave, Mechanicsburg, PA on Thursday, March 20, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this amp to power 4 Alpine SPS-17C2 and 2 JL 10w8's in a 4 Ohm load. The amp did a great job powering the alpines's at 50 watts per channel but struggled pushing the JL subs. I changed to 2 profile amps, 1 AP740 for the Alpine's and 1 AP100 for the JL's (480 watts bridged, stable at 4 ohms). The sound quality is just as good if not better from my Alpine's with the AP740 and my JL's are now pounding with the AP1000. Only issue I had with the Infinity 5350a is not enough power for the sub channel.

Fairly Pleased, Especially for the Price

Written By Robb, Utah on Wednesday, October 31, 2007
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Compared to buying two amps (a 4-channel plus a 2- or 1-channel), this is a bargain, especially when you consider additional wiring costs for the second amp. It's attractive and performs fairly well, with adjustability everywhere you need. My only complaint is the 150-watt subwoofer channel. Compared to 50 watts for the four regular channels, the subwoofer output is a bit on the weak side, so the door speakers have the potential to keep cranking up long after the sub tops out. The only cure would be to not use the sub channel and power my sub with a separate amp with more power. I'm not willing to do that just yet, which is the reason I bought a 5-channel amp in the first place. It's acceptable as is, but it would have been PERFECT with 50 watts x 4 channels + 350 watts x 1 channel. But still, for the money it's a great value.
