DVD receivers: They're not just for movies

DVD receivers add a new level of entertainment to your vehicle. You can watch a movie on the screen when you're parked on a Saturday night, or play a DVD through your rear seat video setup on the road. Touchscreen receivers allow you to breeze through menus with the tip of your finger. Most DVD receivers feature a USB input for audio from your iPod, and the ability to add an adapter that allows video to display on the screen. Some receivers even offer connections for a center speaker and a subwoofer, so you can build a full-fledged theater in your car, just like at home.

Our take on the Clarion VX401

by Zak Billmeier

You're the captain of the road trip. You're driving the ship, so you're the master of entertainment, too. But you don't have proper control over your vessel without a sleek, touchscreen command center in the dash. Enter the Clarion VX401 DVD receiver and its ample 6.2" touchscreen, combined with a slick interface — finally, you have a dash worthy of a leader of your magnitude.

Movies and more
You can enjoy watching DVDs up front while you're parked, or hook up a video screen in the back so the kids can watch movies as you drive. Plug your iPod® or iPhone® into the rear USB input — you'll get touchscreen control over your tunes, and your iPod will stay charged as you drive. You can add an adapter to view video content from your iPhone or iPod, and you'll also find an audio/video input for video games or other sources.

Built-in hands-free calling, plus navigation-ready
A good captain is always concerned with the safety of the crew. With built-in Bluetooth®, you'll talk hands-free with your compatible phone. When a call comes in, you can tap the screen to answer the call, then you'll hear your caller over the speakers. And you can even stream tunes if your device supports it.

Your options don't end there. You can connect an optional SIRIUS satellite radio tuner directly to the VX401 (no adapter needed) to get the nearly endless variety of entertainment available. Hook up Clarion's HD Radio™ tuner for awesome digital AM/FM sound quality.

Good news if you crave great sound
The VX401 plays your store-bought and recordable CDs and DVDs, including discs you've loaded with MP3 and WMA files. A powerful internal amp gives your music plenty of punch, while a premium digital-to-analog converter ensures you'll hear all the musical details. Three sets of preamp outputs let you add amps and subs to the mix, and the subwoofer volume control lets you dial in just the right amount of bass. Clarion includes a handy remote for on-the-fly changes.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Clarion stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Clarion, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

      Display Features

2-DIN Chassis: The Clarion VX401 has a 2-DIN chassis (also known as "Double DIN" or size DD), and will fit in many vehicles with a large dash opening. The unit can be ISO-mounted using your vehicle's factory radio brackets and the supplied hardware. There is also an optional custom double-DIN sleeve (0202DBKT, sold separately) available for this unit that will allow you to mount the VX401 in a custom 4" opening.

Note: As always, please consult the Crutchfield Car Selector to verify fit with your vehicle.

6.2" Touch Panel TFT Display: The Clarion VX401 has an integrated 6.2" TFT wide screen display with touch panel controls. The display provides a high-resolution video monitor for watching your DVD videos. The screen has a total pixel count of 1,152,000 pixels. The display features brightness and shape (4:3 or 16:9) adjustment. The unit's touch panel features interactive controls making menu navigation easy.

Touch Panel Controlled GUI: The GUI (Graphical User Interface) shows large icons that are highly visible and easily recognizable at a glance. And thanks to the touch panel screen, accessing each function is as intuitive as touching its icon. This very straightforward system lets the driver keep his attention on the road, and enables front seat passengers to use any desired function without the need to "learn" anything. What's more, since the vast majority of functions are controllable from the touch panel, there are only 4 physical buttons on the unit for the most basic and commonly-used functions.

Parking Brake Detection: To prevent displaying video while the vehicle is in motion, the bright green wire in the supplied harness must be connected to the vehicle's parking brake detection circuit. While the vehicle is in motion (parking brake off), you can still view all of the other displays and menus.

Anti-Theft Code: You may program the unit with a 4 digit security code. Once the unit has been programmed with a security code, the code must be entered to use the unit after it has been disconnected from power.

      Audio Section

24-bit D/A Converter: The unit's 24-bit D/A converter re-quantizes the 16-bit audio signals from CDs and DVDs as 24-bit data while maintaining the low distortion and linearity of a 1-bit D/A converter. This allows an expanded dynamic range and clearer reproduction of subtle nuances, for a richer sound when viewing DVDs or listening to CDs.

MOSFET Amplifier: The Clarion VX401 is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the VX401 are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the VX401 are as follows:

      • CEA2006 Specs: 18 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
      • Maximum Power Output: 40 watts x 4 channels (160 watts total)

Audio Settings: The Clarion VX401 offers the following audio adjustments.

      • Preset EQ: Flat, Jazz, Pop, or Classical
      • Bass and Treble: Independent and variable bass (60, 80, 100, or 200Hz) and treble (10, 12.5, 15, or 17.5kHz) control (+/- 7 dB); you can also adjust the Bass Q-Factor to 1.0, 1.25, 1.5, or 2.0.
      • Loudness: Compensates for low and high tones during low volume.

6-Channel Preamp Output: With 3 sets of RCA outputs, you are free to add external power amplifiers to create a more powerful, sophisticated audio system. The multimedia head unit is equipped with stereo front, rear and subwoofer preamp outputs for connecting the unit to an external amplifier.

Subwoofer Controls: Independent volume control is enabled for the subwoofer preamp output so you can adjust the level of bass output to your liking at any time, regardless of the output level of the other channels. The subwoofer preamp output's level can be adjusted independently from -9 to +9 dB. The VX401 also features a low pass filter for the subwoofer preamp output. You can select between 80Hz, 120Hz or 160Hz.

Beep: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

      Radio Functions

AM/FM Tuner: The Clarion VX401 is equipped with a built-in AM/FM tuner. The VX401 offers Seek, Scan, Manual, and Preset tuning.

Preset Tuning: The VX401's built-in AM/FM tuner features 3 FM bands and 1 AM band. You can store up to 12 presets in each bands, allowing you to store 36 FM and 12 AM preset stations. You can manually store your favorite presets or have the VX401 automatically store the strongest stations for you.

Preset Scan: The Preset Scan receives the stations stored in the units' preset memory in order. The unit scans each station for 10 seconds sequentially. This function is useful when searching for the desired station in memory.

Local Seeking: When Local seeking is turned "On", only those radio stations with strong radio signal can be received.

HD Radio Ready: Connecting the optional Clarion THD400 HD Radio tuner (020THD400, sold separately) lets you enjoy listening to digitally broadcast radio programs with superior sound quality and text information (such as artist name and song titles or traffic news; viewable on the head unit's display). HD Radio technology, where available, offers higher quality sound than conventional analog broadcasts and receives text data. HD Radio provides FM broadcasts that are equal to CD sound quality and AM broadcasts that are as good as analog FM stereo broadcasts. HD Radio also provides a variety of data, including station name, song title, artist name, album name, etc. No subscription fees required.

Note: Right now there are about 2,000 radio stations broadcasting using digital HD Radio technology in the U.S. To find HD Radio stations in your area, visit the HD Radio website (HDRadio.com).

iTunes Tagging: The add-on HD Radio tuner (sold separately) includes iTunes Tagging capability. iTunes Tagging allows you to "tag" songs heard over HD Radio. iTunes Tagging saves the song's title and metadata to your connected iPod/iPhone (you may store up to 64 tags in the memory). When the iPod/iPhone is synced to iTunes, a playlist is generated with links to the iTunes Store where the song can be purchased and downloaded.

Note: This function can be operated with the following iPod/iPhone models - iPod nano (3rd/4th/5th/6th gen), iPod classic (80/120/160GB), iPod touch (1st/2nd/3rd/4th gen), and iPhone (2G/3G/3GS/4).

Sirius Direct: You can connect the Clarion VX401 to the SiriusConnect SC-C1 Sirius Satellite Radio Receiver (607SCC1, sold separately) without any need for a interface box and enjoy over 130 channels of music, news, talk shows, sports and traffic information with digital quality sound throughout the U.S. and Canada.

Note: A subscription to Sirius Satellite Radio is required for service.

great stereo easy to use but maybe could use a search bar or something for the ipod. could be just a software update maybe?
      Pros:
easy install everything is clearly labeled and the manuel makes it all dummy proof.
      Cons:
alot of rca cables made putting this unit into the dash kind of a pain and the usb cable was a little long for my needs but a zip tie took care of that. and the eq is not as good as i had expected

Ok the touch screen is tough to get responce and the color of the screen is far from vivid. I know this is a cheaper dvd player but I was able to use it for about 1 month before the remote stopped working and after 1.5 yrs the screen froze up and wont show any menus. I called clarion probley 10 times to try and get it repaired and they never call anyone back. So I will never but anything Clarion EVER in my life, but your all welcome to take your chances

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I ordered this radio because I needed a radio that would allow me to keep my lifetime subscription to Sirius radio but after installing it, I hated it. The sound was poor, and when I would try to find songs on my i-pod, it took FOREVER to scroll through all the screens to find an artist then it would not let me choose an individual album so if I had 10 albums form a specific artist, I would have to scroll through hundreds of songs to find what I wanted. It was a major road hazard for sure. Fortunately, Crutchfield treated me right and allowed me to return it and get a better radio. I give Cruthfield an A and Clarion an F
      Pros:
      It sounds average
      Cons:
      cumbersome controls, difficult to use.

Overall satisfied. Easy to install. Installed in a 2001 Toyota Sequoia with JBL Amplified System. Sound is fantastic. Only issue was the second antenna with amplifier in the car. With out the antenna amplifier, the reception is not as good as the factory cd player/radio. Still working on a resolution. Make sure to get the factory connector makes it super easy for install, except the back up camera was a little challenging but works great. And you can't beat the price for the funtionality of the unit.

Brake light connection for DVD player

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nice deck. Great sound and picture. I put it into our 05 F-150. When we bought the truck, it already had headrest screens, but the factory deck had been put back in. This deck was a fairly easy install and works great. The only problem we had was the plastic install kit broke within a couple months. The whole deck fell into the dash going down the road. I just went to Walmart and picked up a new install kit and re-installed. It seems to be a little thicker plastic than the original one I had. Now we're good to go!
      Pros:
      Works great and easy install.
      Cons:
Plastic install kit is a little weak or at least mine was.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this to replace the stock unit n my "new" 07 trailblazer. Installation was fairly easy, and it looked great. That's about all the good I can say about it. From the beginning, like tohers have stated, the volume would often blast m out after haging upa Bluetooth phone call. It also would sometimes lock up my phone, not allowing me to cacel a call, from the radio or the phone. This past weekend, it has locked up completely. Nothing works, except the navigation. I assume this is because the nav unit is a seperate unit from the head unit. Andthe navigation is a bit of a joke. It is difficult to program (relatively speaking, anyway) and I frankl find my less expensive TomTom does a better job. I haven't even finished paying for this new upgrade, and I am already having to look at a repair/replacement. I wish I didn't have the Clarion nav unit, because I would look for antoher brand. But I have too much invested now to switch.
      Pros:
      Looks good, fits well.
      Cons:
      Very, very unreliable.

      Junk, don't buy!

Written By coreyleepc, Chico, CA on Wednesday, July 25, 2012

I bought this radio for the ease of use, the fact that it had bluetooth, and it was compatable with Sirius. I did not buy from Crutchfield, but bought the adapters and satelite receiver from them. All of the components I purchased from Crutchfield worked flawlessly, and they were great to work with! I highly recommend Crutchfield to anyone. The Clarion had several issues. First of all, there was a short in the left front speaker that would not go away after checking all wiring and replacing the harness (thanks Crutchfield! Secondly, as a previous review stated, after hanging up the blue tooth, the volume would blast me out at the max of 40. I have two amplifiers hooked up with upgraded speakers, and trust me...40 is LOUD! Lastly, the steering wheel volume control is not working with the Clarion. I replaced the adapter to see if that would fix the problem, but no change. Crutchfield was great throughout the headaches I have had with this unit, even though I did not purchase the unit from them. I will be buying my new unit through them once I get reimbursed from the folks I got the Clarion through.
      Pros:
      Ease of use, good looking
      Cons:
Ok sound, only base and treble for controls, bluetooth problems, and a short in the radio.

This headin it is a good buy if your on a budget and u don't mind a few kinks. Install was easy and sound quality is good but it picks up signals from my phone at random and pauses my music and if ur the type of person like me and u have a lot of music there is no quick way to song search ... Songs are listed in alphabetical order and u have to tap the down arrow everytime u want to see another 8 songs imagine how long it takes you to get to the n's out of over 5000 songs. Overall I just wasn't happy with this purchase so I'm upgrading to the pioneer 4400

Overall I was pretty happy about this unit until it would not work if the inside of my vehicle would get hot. I live in South Dakota, not Arizona so any unit should be able to handle the heat.

Unreliable. Not a good value for the $$$

Written By graybeam, Portland, OR on Friday, June 15, 2012

I will never buy another Clarion deck after owning this unit. Sure the deck is a grand improvement on a stock deck, but for the price I'd rather own a high-end non-dvd deck (DVD being novelty in a sedan). This is the bargain barrel DVD touchscreen deck and it is not worth your time or money. The interface sucks and it is unreliable. Sound quality is bad after you get through the initial "wow". Lack of customer service is appalling. There is no replacement, only repair. Hardly worth not having a stereo for a month when the problem is intermittent and they may just send it back having done nothing to it.
      Pros:
Sounds better than a stock deck. Built-in Bluetooth mic works well for phone calls. You can watch movies on it when it lets you. Inexpensive for a DVD touch deck. Video quality is decent. Remote control is novelty.
      Cons:
      - POOR AUDIO QUALITY (no mids hardly at all) - MANY ANNOYANCES (from the inputs to the screen functionality) - UNRELIABLE (failing before even a year of standard use) - POORLY CONSTRUCTED (between clicking motors and failing adhesives) - NO CUSTOMER SERVICE (cannot speak to a human, cannot speak to an employee of Clarion)

Instantly made my sound system better and the video quality is nice for the money. The bluetooth feature is great and helps me with my driving and talking issue. Overall I am very happy with this unit. It doesnt have all the flashy screen effects I have had with my alpine or excelon units in the past and honestly I am happier without them

Great Potential, but a few major bugs

Written By Tim, Richmond, Va on Tuesday, June 05, 2012
Installed in a 2005 Honda Pilot

On paper, this unit was exactly what I was looking for - satellite radio, bluetooth phone/audio streaming capabilities, and a nice-looking touchscreen. For the most part, this unit functioned as described, but I encountered one major issue that caused me to return this unit.

When ending a phone call using bluetooth and resuming playing the radio, this unit will ocasionally forget to switch volume back to the radio source volume level and will blast the radio at the bluetooth volume level (I listen to the radio at a 13-15 volume, bluetooth is around 35). The volume will lock up, forcing me to power down and reboot the radio to restore the volume to normal.

I returned one of these units for a replacement - Crutchfield was great in the return process and very helpful. After having the same issue above with the second radio, I called Clarion customer support. They were aware of the issue, but didn't intend to fix it in any way. Their answer to the problem was that the wiring harness was bad - I should rewire the radio to connect directly to the battery and bypass the wiring harness. Crutchfield tech support agreed with me that this was a pretty tough to believe answer.

I'll be returning this radio, and purchasing a similar product from a competitor. I wish this unit worked out, but the annoyance wasn't worth it. Crutchfield has been great to work with throughout the process, and I'll definitely be buying my replacement through them.
      Pros:
Great set of features for a reasonable price. Bluetooth audio was clear when using an external mic.
      Cons:
Major issue with volume when switching from bluetooth audio source after call. See description above. Internal bluetooth mic was unusable, required the external mic for others to hear/understand me during calls.

I got this unit for my 2008 Jeep Commander. It is a definite upgrade from the stock head unit. The sound and picture are fantastic. I was a little nervous from some of the reviews I've read but I wasn't expecting $1000 quality in this unit. It does everything I need it to do with no problems.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I own a 08 wrangler and this has been the best thing I have put in. I don't see how anyone has had a problem with this unit. Everything works perfect. I already owned the xm add on and after installing it It works every time I turn the car on and it even works when it's not on Sirius when first turned on. Over all this radio is well worth the money and in my opinion better than some more expensive units. The Bluetooth is freaking awesome even when you sync the contacts from your phone It displays the incoming callers ID.

So as I said earlier this unit is freaking awesome in all aspects.

      The whole radio
