Putting a multi-room entertainment system in your home? Niles' sensible line of MultiZone products are designed for intuitive operation, great sound, and flexible system building.

The heart of a Niles MultiZone system is a receiver like the ZR-8630AV. With twelve channels of clean amplification, this capable receiver can drive stereo speakers in up to six different rooms. The "AV" in its name stands for audio and video — it can also distribute video signals from sources such as a DVD player and satellite TV tuner to TVs in any or all of your playback rooms.

One advantage of a Niles MultiZone system is that all your components can stay hidden in a closet or another out-of-the-way location, while users can control playback in each room with a decor-friendly, in-wall Intellipad Ci keypad or touchscreen (required, sold separately). Plus, the ZR-8630AV stores all the remote codes from your connected components in its own built-in memory, so rather than having to program the codes into each keypad independently, you can just program the receiver once — a big time-saver when it comes to installation.

The receiver passes the commands from the keypads on to your connected components using infrared flashers (required, sold separately). With the '8630AV, you can have up to six external sources in your system, such as DVD and CD changers, an audio server, a satellite TV tuner, and more. Two built-in AM/FM tuners let your access your favorite stations throughout your home. And you can connect up to three '8630AV receivers together for distributing entertainment to as many as 18 different rooms.

Features

Multi-zone/Multi-source: The ZR-8630AV Multi-Zone Receiver incorporates matrix preamplifier technology to provide any of six outboard source components and either of the two built-in tuners to six listening zones. At any time, a given zone can play any of the eight sources, controlling that zone's operation with a control keypad specifically for that zone. Note: At least one Master Keypad Module is required for the receiver to function (ex: 190SLCTIR or 190TS1W), one keypad per zone is strongly recommended to give you independent volume control and source selection in each zone. (Pressing and holding one of the source keys for longer than three seconds causes all enabled zones to turn on and select the same source-component, so it's possible, but not recommended, to simultaneously operate all six zones without independent control with one keypad)

12-Channel Amplifier: The ZR-8630AV is an integrated solution for multi-zone applications. Six built-in 30 watt/channel stereo amplifiers provide clear and dynamic sound for six listening zones. The newly patented Niles no-strip connectors provide fast and reliable connections to the speaker pairs in the listening areas.

Built-in AM/FM Tuner: The ZR-8630AV includes two built-in AM/FM tuners that are available to all zones as one of the eight source selections. Each high-quality tuner is programmable with 10 preset AM and 10 preset FM stations, and includes direct station access.

Central Intelligence: The design approach of the ZR-8630AV Multi-Zone Receiver is a radical departure from that of traditional programmable keypad-controlled multi-zone systems. Instead of redundantly programming each of the individual keypads with IR commands, all IR commands are programmed and stored in the ZR-8630AV. The Solo Master Keypad Module, Numeric Accessory Keypad Module, and Niles IR Sensors connect to the receiver for complete system control. Total system cost is reduced due to shorter programming time and the lower cost of the modular keypads located in each zone.

Quick and Easy Programming with PC Archiving: Manual programming is made fast and easy via push buttons and LED visual prompts that lead you step-by-step through the programming process. Additionally, all system programming can be archived on your PC using the DB-9 interface on the front of the receiver.

Sync Inputs: Sync Inputs on the ZR-8630AV sense whether the connected source components are on or off. Power commands for these source components are issued only if the components are off, turning them on correctly, every time. The proper input for the source component is then selected and a programmed sequence of IR commands are issued (play, favorite station, etc). A complex mix of various brand audio/video components can be operated with ease and simplicity when using the ZR-8630AV.

System-Wide Operation: The ZR-8630AV Multi-Zone Receiver incorporates system-wide control to activate all zones to a particular source component. An All Off command is also included for complete system shutdown from any zone in the system.

Paging Input for Telephone Systems: A paging input is provided for telephone systems equipped with a paging output. Audio sensing is utilized to detect the paging signal. Source components currently playing in the various zones are interrupted, enabling the paging signal to play through. If a zone is off during a page, it turns on, enabling the paging signal to play through. Front-panel switches are provided to disable this paging feature in any zones where it is not required.

12V Control Output: A control output connector provides a constant 12V DC trigger signal the moment any zone is activated. This signal can be interfaced with voltage triggered AC power strips for the automation of source components that can only be activated via switched AC outlets. Also, individual control-output triggers for zones 4, 5, and 6 provide a constant 12V DC trigger signal for reliable triggering of external amplifiers specified for zones requiring more power.

Expandable for Larger Multi-Zone Systems: Up to three ZR-8630AVs can be combined in a single system, providing 18 zones. Source components are connected to all receivers, splitting their audio and video signals using RCA Y-adapters or signal distribution amplifiers.

Memory Protection: The ZR-8630AV utilizes non-volatile memory for storage of its programming. This safeguards against accidental loss of the programming for the entire life of the product.

Independent Volume: Each zone has its own volume control, allowing total flexibility throughout the system. The volume level is also automated in several situations:

  • You can set a maximum "turn on" and "source change" volume for each zone, if the previous volume is lower than this preset maximum, the volume remains unchanged
  • You can set an All On volume level, used when an All On command is given to turn on all the zones, if a zone was already on its volume remains unchanged
  • When the page function is used, the same adjustable volume setting is used in every zone

Zone Indicators: Each zone has an LED on the front panel indicating that zone's status (on or off). Beside each LED is an inset for one of the included zone labels.
