Infinity

Your home theater's most important speaker

The center channel speaker is the workhorse in a home theater system. It has to reproduce clear dialogue and special effects that keep your eyes and ears glued to the movie action. A high-quality center speaker is a great investment for any surround sound setup. Try to choose one that's as closely matched as possible to your front right and left speakers, so that as sound moves across the front stage, it stays seamlessly realistic.

Our take on the Infinity Primus PC250

by Loren Barstow

Infinity's speakers have always been known for their crisp, clear sound, and the Primus PC250 center channel speaker is no exception. It accurately reproduces the human voice for clean movie dialogue, and provides plenty of impact for exciting home theater sound. The PC250 does a fantastic job of focusing your attention on the screen and pulling you into the action with all your movies and video games.

The key to this speaker's performance is Infinity's proprietary Metal Matrix Diaphragm™ speaker material. This material uses a stiff aluminum core to add rigidity to the drivers. This allows the speaker to reproduce clear sound, even when you turn it up loud. All of the speakers in the Primus series are voice-matched, making it easy to build a system that fits your room and listening preferences.

    Driver Technology

Metal Matrix Diaphragm (M.M.D.): Derived from the C.M.M.D. material used in Infinity's flagship Cascade series, M.M.D. features a stiff aluminum core, anodized on both sides for increased strength and rigidity. M.M.D. transducers conduct sound faster than paper, polypropylene, and Kevlar, pushing unwanted resonances beyond the operating range of the transducer. M.M.D. drivers deliver crystal-clear, distortion-free sound from dynamic digital sources, even at high listening levels.

Woofers: The dual 5-1/4" M.M.D. cone woofers offer extremely accurate lower midrange response for cleaner, more realistic sound. For a smoother response and improved durability, the woofers use rubber surrounds.

Tweeter: The speaker has a 3/4" M.M.D. dome tweeter that offers superior stiffness and damping compared to traditional metal domes.

Waveguide: The PC250's tweeter utilizes an acoustical waveguide to deliver, more even high frequency response, no matter what part of the room you're in.

Crossover: The speaker features a 2-way crossover system with crossover frequency at 3000Hz. The crossover has a 24dB/octave slope.

Matching System: The PC250 is voice-matched to all the speakers in the Primus line, so a complete matching system can be built.

    Connections

5-Way Binding Posts: The 5-way binding posts will accept bare wire, pin connectors, spade connectors, banana plugs, and dual banana plugs.

    Mounting Options

Wall Mounting: The speaker has two keyhole slots in the upper left and right corners of the back panel. In addition, two non-skid rubber bumpers are attached in the lower corners so the speaker won't mar wall surfaces when the speaker is mounted.

    Dimensions

Grille: The speaker comes with a removable cloth grille with a rigid plastic frame.

    • With Grille: Width = 18.125", Height = 7.345", Depth = 9.75"
    • Without Grille: Width = 17.4375", Height = 7.3125", Depth = 9.1875"

    Wonderful speaker

Written By Travis County Slim, Bee Cave , Texas on Thursday, January 10, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We have this hooked up with a Denon 1613 AVR (Crutchfield) and installed in a wall unit in our great room. It is part a a stereo system in conjunction with Klipsch 8" ceiling speakers. We run our CD's and DVDs through a Samsung blu-ray player which we also got through Crutchfield. I have quite a significant hearing loss in my left ear but now have the ability to actually hear dialog in movies which makes the whole movie experience memorable. I would submit that this unit could easily substitute for a stereo system in a small apartment.
    Pros:
Very accurate speaker, has great bass and crisp vocals and treble. Wonderful for both music and spoken word.
    Cons:
    No cons, great product.

    Infinity Primus PC250

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this center channel to replace my Polk CS10 that was damaged from a lightning strike. This little speaker looks great and sounds terrific with a set of Infinity tower speakers and a Klipsch sub. I would recommend this speaker for a home theater system in a medium sized room. This speaker sounds as good or better then the polk center channel it replaced.
    Pros:
Construction and appearance. Sounds great. Price.
    Cons:

    Great speaker, great price!

Written By BobO, Gokd Canyon, AZ on Tuesday, October 16, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

On closeout, half the normal price of the current PC251. Exact same specs, speakers and appearance, except when you remove the black cover, the speaker facing is a silver color (black on the PC251). With the cover on, you'd never know the difference between the two. Great performance....combined with two P363's and two P153's. BUY IT, while they are still in stock.
    Pros:
Great response, and quality. Half the price of PC251...same speakers.
    Cons:
    None

I exchanged it for the Primus PC351 since I have a large room. The PC351 now fills the room with great sound when playing movies. The PC250 is a nice center channel for a mid size room.

    Excellent Center Channel

Written By KmanTexas, Dallas on Monday, February 07, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I already have the Infinity Primus P362 towers which are amazing and was a little bit
concerned this smaller center channel couldn't produce enough sound. I've only got
space enough in my cabinet for an 18"-wide center, and I was wondering if I would be
missing out on a lot by not getting the larger model.

My fears were unfounded--this is an efficient, powerful, and great-sounding speaker
perfectly voice-matched to my Infinity towers. Delivers very clean, balanced sound
through my Harman Kardon AV Receiver, and I couldn't be happier with the result.

    Way to go, Infinity!

    Infinity Primus PC250

Written By Steve S, Vernon, Ct on Tuesday, January 25, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent speaker for the cost. It's much better than the one I had. I would have gone for the
next one up but it wouldn't fit in the entertainment center (18" vs 24") which includes a
midrange. This one however projects clear voice which what I was looking for. For the
    money, can't beat it.

    Good quality

Written By Jacob L., Ames, Iowa on Tuesday, January 18, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This speaker is well made in attractive black ash. It has good weight to it and
looks elegant. The terminals on the back appear to be good, gold plated quality
and it is a cinch to attach banana plug to them. There are brackets on the back
to be able to hang the speaker. I have it placed under our 42" TV and it looks
fairly big - it is as wide as our receiver, and taller. So make sure you have
space for it on your TV stand.
The sound from the speaker appears clear and detailed. However, most surround
systems don't demand a lot of the center speaker, so it is difficult to rate
exactly how well it sounds. I am using it with an Onkyo receiver and
matching Primus 162 speakers, and it looks good and sounds good.
For regular Blue Ray surround I have trouble to imagine you would need more than
this speaker, unless your room is huge. We are 9 -12 feet from the TV and
    speaker and it sounds great.

    Get the 350 Instead

Written By EvanF, Potomac, MD on Sunday, September 26, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm a big fan of Infinity speakers, having compared them against much more expensive
but, in my opinion, still inferior speakers. I bought the 250 when I went to a 5.1 system a
few years ago. It was a mistake. The 250 voices came out muffled, and other sounds
lacked sharpness and intensity. I upgraded to the 350 in recent days and it made a
huge difference. Speaker specs will give the highs and lows of frequency ranges, but
never discount the value of good mid-range speakers for voices and action noices, and
even for guitar and brass instruments. The 350 is a much better speaker, and a key
investment since it carries most of the sound track.

perform well with the rest of the set-up i had a feeling when i was ordering this i should
have just paid a little more and got the pc350 center..a refund is in process for the pc250
and the pc350 is on its way to me..dont get me wrong this is still a nice speaker it just

    Great sound for the price!

Written By Phil S, Green Bay,WI on Wednesday, August 25, 2010

If you have a new digital TV with those tiny speakers, do yourself a favor. Buy a decent center-channel for it! I knew I needed a better center channel when my $70 one didn't produce the highs or lows I wanted, And the dialoge is great! The Primus 250 really comes out on top without you having to spend an arm and a leg for a great center speaker!
Buy it! I did and I couldn't be happier.

    Go for the PC350

Written By Anonymous, Orem, Utah on Friday, January 29, 2010

It is a decent speaker but I was never quite satisfied with it. Eventually I
gave up and replaced my Primus system with a much more expensive system.
Recently I have resurrected the Primus set for a secondary location. Still
disappointed with the center channel I replaced it with the PC350.

Had I gone with the PC350 from the beginning I may never have felt the need to
replace my whole Primus set. Do yourself a favor spend a little more money and
get the 3 way PC350. The center channel is the work horse of a theater speaker
    system.

    Great value; solid product

Written By showen, S.F. Bay Area on Sunday, October 19, 2008

I too purchased the silver grille version because of: 1) it matched my silver grille PS28 subwoofer and my lighter colored wall mounted Bose 161s; and, 2) it was on price break, which was too good to pass up. The PC250 is wall mountable - which I thought would be great if we moved to a larger home - but it fit in my new furniture console and it sounds, in my opinion, much better than the Bose VC-10 which I bought as a gift for my dad. The movie dialogue coming from the PC250 is much clearer and we're very satisfied with it.
