LOUSY!!!

I don't normally write reviews but this is an exception. I've owned Alpine stereos for years and always been very satisfied with them. I have been away from the car stereo world for a few years and thought that the performance would only get better. WRONG!! what happened? Sure you can connect ipods and numerous other nonsense to this thing but the sound quality is dreadful! It really is and i ran this thing through old school rockford fosgate amps when they were made right here in the usa and quality was second to none! I ve even tried using the deck amplifier thinking maybe the amps have seen better days. Nope, it gets loud and clear but the sound is very overenhanced and unnatural sounding. Yuck! Furthermore the FM tuner is terrible. I live in the Philly suburbs and I think the factory AM tuner was clearer. Yes, some of us still use the radio. Also where did the trade mark Alpine green buttons go? These blue and red buttons are hideous and obscenely bright! The display is readable in almost any light but not very nice to look at. On a positive note navigating the menus is simple enough and well thought out. I find it very easy to operate. The sound is just horrid and unacceptable though! I'm taking this thing out and ressurecting my trusty old 7949!! The sound quality is that bad, I' d rather do without all the modern conveniences. They just don't make Them like they used to. I want my green buttons back!!!

Um... why so bad?

Like the other worst review here, this unit produces a very cold and hollow sound. I have had to up the treble to the +7 marker and my sub to the +10 marker with barely an improvement in sound. Although this product may have a few years under it's belt, my original stereo (1997 BMW) is FARRRR better than this piece of crap. Anyways, I purchased it to replace my 6 year old Sony Xplod CDX-M800. The is a motorized flip model but unfortunately this past year the inside control panel has stopped working. Even more unfortunate, the Sony unit STILL blows the new Alpine unit out of the way. Sound was still perfect from it and also the given functionality of manipulating the high and low pass filters, built in EQ, etc etc. was a major upgrade to my original unit. However, the Alpine not only fails in every category in comparison to the twice as old Sony unit, but it also fails in the basics of stereo functionality. Navigation is completely retarded, the ability to modify any form of sound quality is appalling, and the buttons/display is obscenely bright and unreadable. Poor radio reception, mediocre CD playback, NO auxiliary function... pathetic. The day before I installed this unit, I was driving home a guy that owns a BMW M3. He commented on my systems complimenting its unbelievable sound quality and clarity considering I have 12 year old speakers (and to my knowledge have been THOROUGHLY used). It was also the last day I heard beautiful music of all genres played in my car. RIP.

Great HUD

I purchased this unit two years ago, and it still operates like new. Looking at the price and features of "improved models" available for sale today makes me dread the day I have to replace the CDA-9885. The face plate is very durable, I seldom use the protective case supplied by Alpine. Almost every aspect of the unit is well designed. I have an Ipod and Sirius unit connected to the back of this unit, both sound great, and are a cinch to operate through this unit.
Pros:
Great sound from any source.
Easy navigation utilizing Ipod, Sirius, playing CD's etc.
Large bright, clean, clear display.
Simple, well placed controls.
Lots of connectivity options.
Easy to use owner's manual.
Full Sirius Radio control from the receiver.
OEM steering wheel control option (with third party connect).
Cons:
Blue color illumination option to bright at night (red option is great).
6 RCA jacks on back are to close together.
Volume knob separates easily from face plate.
One thing I dislike about Alpine is that to add a satellite receiver to this unit one must buy their adapter and hard wire it to the vehicles power source and ground the adapter. Manufactures such as Kenwood requires only a simple cable connection between their receiver and Satellite radio adapter, no additional power source is required.
I am very pleased with this unit and highly recommend buying it.

Alpine CDA-9885

Either the previous poster got a defective unit or just isn't putting the face back on right. I'll admit I had some trouble getting back on when I first got mine...it takes a few tries to get the feel. This is phenomenal head unit! I've had mine for almost two years and it has performed beautifully. My favorite features are the easy to read display, WMA/MP3/AAC compatibility, and file search features. My only complaints are the limited background effect options (only 4) and not being able to turn the back lights off in tuner mode. Minor stuff really. If your looking for an awesome receiver with great looks, THIS is it!!!

FACE FALLS OFF
Written By
Gary, Texas on Sunday, December 14, 2008
The detachable face lasts about 6 to 8 months before it turns into a total
pain the the neck !
If you use the feature you will be dissapointed, the set up to reattach it is
very cheezy small plastic bump fits into a small plastic gear to hinge.
The sound is VERY GOOD but the face will frustrate you without a doubt.
Sometimes it just falls off as you close it to play your CD.
You will have to pull over and find it and reattaching it while you drive is
impossible without crashing......LOL
I suggest finding a unit that does not have to drop the face everytime to
load a cd.
