Dual

Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Our take on the Dual XML8150

by Ken Nail

iPod® and iPhone® lovers — here's the receiver for you

Dual designed the XML8150 digital media receiver with an integrated flip-out dock that provides a direct connection and mount for your iPhone® or iPod®. You can adjust the mount for vertical or horizontal orientation of your device, whatever works best with the layout of your dashboard. You can use the controls on the receiver or your iPod to access your tunes, and the receiver dock keeps your device charged as you drive, too.

Dual XML8150

Even more ways to play your tunes

The XML8150 won't play CDs, but you sure won't be at a loss for entertainment. You can use the receiver's front-panel auxiliary input to connect a Dock & Play satellite radio, an MP3 player, or other audio source. You can also use the USB input or SD card slot to play back music files — it's like having a CD changer built into the player.

Dual XML8150

Built-in Bluetooth®

It's time to quit fumbling for your phone when you're driving, as this Dual offers hands-free calling with any compatible phone. When a call comes in, the XML8150 mutes your music, while you conduct your conversation over your vehicle's speakers. If you've got music stored on your mobile device, you'll appreciate how Bluetooth audio streaming lets you listen to your favorite music without plugging in your phone.

Your system, your sound

This Dual's sound controls are a definite step up from most factory systems. The 3-band parametric equalizer lets you adjust the levels and slope of specific frequencies, making it easy to custom tune the audio output to your liking. If you like a one-button approach, select from one of the seven preset EQ curves. Three sets of preamp outputs simplify hooking up amps, and you can even control the level of bass with the subwoofer level control.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Dual stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Dual, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls.

This digital media receiver will not play CDs. If you want to play CDs in your vehicle, we offer a wide selection of CD receivers.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

      Built-in Bluetooth

Built-in Bluetooth: Bluetooth hands-free communication is built into the Dual XML8150, making it easy to integrate a Bluetooth enabled cellular phone (up to 10). Audio Section

MOSFET Amplifier: The Dual XML8150 is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the XML8150 are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the XML8150 are as follows:

      • CEA2006 Specs: 18 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
      • Maximum Power Output: 60 watts x 4 channels (240 watts total)

Preset EQ Curves: The Dual CD Receiver features the following preset EQ curves to customize your music listening - Flat, Pop, Jazz, Classic, Beat, Rock, or User.

3-Band EQ: The User Preset EQ setting allows you to adjust the unit's 3-Band EQ.

Band Selectable Center Frequency Quality Factor Level
      Bass 60, 80, 100, or 200Hz 1.0, 1.25, 1.5, 2.0 -6 to +6 dB
      Midrange 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, or 2.5 kHz 0.5, 0.75, 1.0, 1.25 -6 to +6 dB
      Treble 10, 12.5, 15, or 17.5 kHz N/A -6 to +6 dB

Loudness: The Loudness function enhances the bass & treble frequencies at low volumes.

2V/6Ch Preamp Outputs: The Dual XML8150 is equipped with three pair of 2-Volt preamp outputs (Front/Rear/Subwoofer). The front & rear speakers are fading, while the subwoofer output is non-fading. The subwoofer preamp output's level can be adjusted independently from 0-12. Adjusting the subwoofer level to 0 turns the subwoofer output off.

Subwoofer Control: The unit's non-fading RCA subwoofer outputs feature a variable low-pass filter (80, 120, 160Hz, or Off) and output level (0-12).

Source Volume Level: The Source Volume Level control allows a gain adjustment for each audio source (Tuner, iPod, Aux, SD/SDHC, and USB). You can set the source volume level (+/-6dB) for each mode, depending on the relative volume of each audio source.

Program Volume: You can se the XML8150 to power-on to the same volume level (1-46) every time.

Key Beep: When this function is enabled, every button press will output a beep tone.

      Display Features

Fold-Down Front-Panel: The head unit's front panel folds down to access the unit's SD-card slot and integrated iPod dock. The front-panel display needs approximately 2" of clearance in front of it to open.

Display Settings: The head unit offers the following display settings.

12/24 Hour Clock: The unit's built-in clock will display 12-hour AM/PM time in USA frequency spacing mode. In European frequency spacing mode, the clock will display 24-hour time.

Note: The clock can be set to stay on even when the head unit is turned off.

Power-On Message: This feature allows a "Good Morning/Afternoon/Evening" text message to be shown on the unit's LCD screen when it is powered on.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great value and equally good sound. Installed in a 2002 Nissan Sentra with no problem. The reciver faceplate does not allow the reciver door to hinge downward. Cant seem to find a quick fix for this.
      Pros:
Great value. Good sound with factory speakers, will probably upgrade those next so sound should be even better. Tons of features for bluetooth connectvity, ipod and handsfree phone. Fairly simple to integrate phones and ipods to receiver. Wish th mic was a tad bit smaller.
      Cons:
Dock arm is a bit flimsy. The in-dash kit does not allow the receiver face to hinge downward. Thats a bit of a problem.

The stereo is fairly easy to use. The user friendly aspect could be improved. Every great once in a while the system freezes and you need to restart it. Other than that, it's a pretty stereo for the price!
      Pros:
-Good for the price -Simple in a good way but not simplistic -Sound quality is fair -Reliable
      Cons:
      -Freezes -Not extremely user-friendly

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was attracted by price and technology features (circa 2012 okay with me). Installation was not too difficult with the separately purchased wiring harness. Mechanical connections would have been easier but I soldered all the wires to the harness for reliability. Upon installation I was "blown away" after turning it on by the high volume default setting. That was the only major negative. (See Cons.) Luckily, no harm done and I am enjoying the USB and iPhone features that I was seeking. Though an iPone 5 does not fit into the integrated dock, I am just fine with the BlueTooth streaming interface. It brought my 2000 Honda Insight into the iPhone era. I currently have an older iPod Nano in "the dock" and use BlueTooth interface for my iPhone 5.
      Pros:
Low price. Features I like include USB, blue tooth audio stream. Also, nice microphone for blue tooth phone calls! Audio quality is excellent at normal and higher volume settings.
      Cons:
Factory set "Programmable Turn-on volume" to 99 in a range of 1 to 49!!! Default was supposed to be OFF! After installation I turned it on and nearly blew the speakers in my car! Took five power-on attempts to figure out and fix the problem. Know how to "Mute!" Hardware workmanship is not the highest quality, but all within tolerances. Control head not the most intuitive, but don't expect more for this price!

      Wonderful Media Player

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a very good media player. It syncs to my iPhone without any issues. The call quality was better than I expected. Bluetooth works great, the usb media works great, even the iPod dock is great. The sd card slot work fine if there is not many songs on it, but if you have 500 songs or so, it takes forever to load. Overall though, it works great and I would buy another and recommend to friends.
      Pros:
Has a lot of options for fine tuning your eq. Sounds great. Bluetooth is great.
      Cons:
SD card does not load if you have a lot of songs. The remote is a bit touchy at times.

Great Product and Value for the Money

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was bait concerned by other reviewers that buttons were too small and it was complicated to configure.. and the iPhone/iPod cradle was not designed well, but was pleasantly surprised to find the unit exceeded all my expectations and is an incredible value and performs well. I installed in my Ford work pickup, and having the ability to securely cradle the phone so that it is always in a secure place and accessible, was a plus. My only criticism is that the Bluetooth microphone does not seem to have a gain and/or background filtering adjustment
      Pros:
      Great value and functions
      Cons:
Does not have Bluetooth notice canceling or gain adjustment features

All worked well... except bluetooth audio streaming

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This stereo was easy to install with the instructions provided by Crutchfield. The radio worked well, my iPhone 4S played well with the stereo via a 30-pin cable, and the sound quality was fine when I made phone calls via Bluetooth.

I wasn't able to stream music via Bluetooth. Except for that problem, I'd recommend this stereo. The other reviewers didn't have that problem so it might have been a defect in the unit I received.
      Pros:
      price, accepts SD cards
      Cons:
      bluetooth audio streaming didn't work

Dual is a great starter deck

Written By Stupac, Redmond, Oregon on Sunday, April 21, 2013

I have a similar deck from Dual that I put into my 2000 4Runner. It made a huge improvement over the stock deck. Came with Bluetooth for hands-free talk, and audio streaming. I listen to music all the time with it. The audio quality on Bluetooth is almost as good as a cd or 3.5mm jack, but I can tell that the audio loses a bit of quality on the high end. It's okay, though, because its hardly noticeable, and the average listen most likely wouldn't know the difference.
      Pros:
Bluetooth, 3.5mm jack, and great improvement over most stock systems.
      Cons:
I've noticed that the Bluetooth loses some audio quality on the higher end of the sound spectrum.

the best thing about this receiver is the multitude of connectivity options. USB, SD, bluetooth, aux and the dedicated dock. and the price sweetens it even more. it has all the expected RCA outputs so you can hook it up to an external amplifier like i have. my only potential gripe is that sometimes the unit freezes on me and i have to use a paper clip to hit the reset button on the face of the receiver. it could be my phone causing the crash, as it is jailbroken, so im not gonna ding the receiver too much on this review. id give it 4.5 stars if i could.
      Pros:
      connectivity, price, sound quality
      Cons:
crashes every once in a while (could be my iphone, though), kinda plasticky

I bought this for the Bluetooth capability and found it to work well with my iPhone 4S. I have not had a chance to try a phone call on it, but I don't do a lot of telephoning when driving any. I mostly wanted it to have a decent receiver, amp, USB and streaming capacity.
      Pros:
      Can't beat the price.

I've had nothing but luck with dual receivers in the past, so when my old one finally wore out i had no worries buying another. this unit has everything it says it does and then some. the settings are a little tricky at first but once you play with the settings once or ttwice you"ll figure it out.

I was going to get an Iphone 5 until I got this stereo. At the price if you don't care about the lack of a CD player and you have an iPhone 4 or 4S, then buy this immediately. I plan to get an iPhone 5 eventually, but for now I'm enjoying this Dual.
      Pros:
      Everything and iPhone arm.

      No CD player.

the radio works well so far, only problem was it did freeze once requiring me to use the small reset button on the front. Since then have enjoyed very much,
      Pros:
sounds very well, clear and loud.
      Cons:
radio tuner could be better but, for the price you get EXACTLY what you pay for, instructions could be written better, have to use try and error method to solve some issues, like making the microphone volume louder.

Pretty darn good unit for the money! For a total of 100.00 I spent it improved my factory Bose in my 1999 Maxima drastically. Everything works as advertised, streams Pandora with my Android, USB controls pretty good. My 13 year old Bose speakers with this HU sound vastly superior than the Mach 500 in my 2012 Mustang GT Premium says allot. I have not tried the phone and do not really car how well it works.
      Pros:
Price, bluetooth, sound, ability to finely tune bass, mid, and treble.
      Cons:
alittle bit cheaply built, but for the price and sound this good?!?!?

Great Bluetooth radio - streams my iPhone wirelessly and sounds great - all of my music apps work- spotify, pandora and Xm.
      Pros:
Charges iPhone with USB input- Bluetooth audio sound is great - looks and feels like a quality deck. I've had dual brand decks that felt cheap- this one does not.
      Cons:
I have iphone 5 so I can't use the arm that pulls out. I've never tried the Bluetooth phone so I can't review that.
