Our take on the Tsunami COMPETITION Series Capacitor

by Matt Freeman

You've got a heavy-duty car audio system with multiple amps, but the headlights dim every time the bass hits. Tsunami's amp-style hybrid capacitors ensure that your system gets a steady supply of power for maximum performance, and act as a stabilizer between the amps and your car's electrical system.

Tsunami's COMPETITION Series hybrid capacitor stores a veritable torrent of power, and delivers it to your amps whenever they need it. The satin-chrome housing and chrome covers will look spectacular in your ride, and the pair of blue LCD readouts show you exactly how much voltage is coursing through your system. One 1/0-gauge and three 4/8-gauge terminals handle your wiring needs.

Highlights:

  • 20-farad hybrid capacitor
  • dual blue LCD meters
  • satin-chrome plated amp-style housing
  • chrome-plated front and rear covers
  • one 1/0-gauge, three 4/8-gauge positive and negative wiring terminals
  • 9-716"W x 2-3/4"H x 7-3/4"D
  • warranty: 1 year
  • Our 60-day money-back guarantee

    Overview

Overview: The overall response of your audio system will be enhanced with the use of capacitors due to their ability to store a large amount of current and discharge it quickly to supplement your amplifier's power supply during high current demand (bass note). The Tsunami capacitor is a logical addition to your system due to the fact that automotive batteries aren't designed to deliver the current to satisfy the requirements of high powered audio components. It can also filter AC voltage induced in the system by the amplifier's power supply which could cause objectionable noise. One Farad of capacitance is recommended for each 500 watts of amplifier power, but you can never have too much capacitance for any system.

    Features

Display: There are two digital displays, one showing your precise voltage in 0.1 volt steps, the other showing system current in 1 amp steps.

Flashing LEDs: There are five blue LEDs that pulse with the charge/discharge cycles.

Audible Voltage Warning: If the voltage drops below 10 volts, rises above 17.5 volts, or the polarity is reversed the capacitor emits an audible alarm.

Construction: The X15HCAP-20 is built using hi-end platinum plated 100% brass solid parts, multiple smaller capacitors are linked together to provide the lowest ESR and the largest momentary discharge current.

    Installation

Installation: The X15HCAP-20 is styled much like an amplifier and all the wiring is connected on one end to set screw terminals. The positive and negative input terminals are sized for 1/0 gauge wire. The positive and negative (three each) output terminals are sized for 4 gauge wire but are shipped with inserts sized for 8 gauge wire. The positive input terminal is connected to the battery (and fused at the battery), the positive output terminals are connected to the positive inputs on your amps. The negative input is grounded to the car's chassis and the negative outputs can be used to ground your amps. There are four remote terminals, one connected to the radio, the others can trigger you amps. With the remote wire connection to your radio, the capacitor display and LEDs turn off when you turn the system off. Before the battery is connected you must charge the capacitor with the included light bulb.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great Cap. Easy to connect. The layout and the added distribution blocks make this cap well worth the money. I had a 1.5 Farad cap before and this is a large improvement. It's nice to see the Voltage and Amp draw. This has no problem feeding my hungry Alpine and Clarion Amps. Definately easier to work with than the cap shaped caps. Give it a try...

    Outstanding

Written By adam, Mass. on Tuesday, October 02, 2007

I bought this cap needing more power (with three amplifiers pulling 160 amps on peak bass hits you need all the power you can get). I was using two Optima yellow tops prior to keep up and could not get the response I needed. This cap is amazing once installed (very easy install by the way) the difference was night and day. No more dimming of the lights and I was even able to get rid of one of the batteries. Now since I have upgraded my amps and subs and most everything else I am going to buy the 40 to keep up. In my opinion these caps are worth every penny. In the world of car audio as every competitor and enthusiast knows you can only get out of your amp's what you put in.
