Our take on the Sony XDP-MU110 Digital Link Sound System

by Buck Pomerantz

Add a source and upgrade your sound

Got an iPod touch® or iPhone®? Got a factory radio without an auxiliary input? Sony's XDP-MU110 Digital Link Sound System lets you play your iPod through your car's factory stereo system, and gives you an upgrade in overall sound quality at the same time. The system includes a digital sound processor (DSP) module, a cradle/dock, and a wireless remote control.

XDP-M110 DSP control unit

Here's how it works

You tap into the speaker wiring of your factory system, and connect the wires to inputs and outputs of the DSP module. The DSP unit contains a built-in 4-channel amplifier that almost doubles the power found in most factory radios, bringing new clarity and excitement to your tunes. It features controls for optimizing the sound for your vehicle's specific size and shape, so you can be sure you'll get balanced, full-sounding music throughout your ride. The module also includes three sets of preamp outputs, handy for connecting outboard amplifiers.

XDP-M110 cradle

This cradle will dock

You can mount the cradle, and its cable, onto your dash to dock your device in a convenient position for hands-on or hands-free play. The heavy-duty suction cup holds the cradle to your dash securely, but has a quick-release for easy removal. The cradle also contains a remote control sensor, manual volume control, seek and source selector buttons, and DSP status indicator lights, to help oversee the system. A wireless remote lets you control everything safely, with only a quick glance every now and then.

RM-X251 Card remote commander

Other uses

If you own a classic car and you don't need AM/FM reception, you should take a look at this system. You can install the hideaway module somewhere out of sight, and mount the cradle in a convenient spot. You'll be able to play your iPod through your car's speakers, and adjust your settings with the remote. Best of all, the original radio stays in place, so your car shows well and maintains its value. This system would also work well in buses, recreational vehicles, and many other applications where you don't need an in-dash receiver.

    System Overview

Digital Link Sound System: The Sony Digital Link Sound System (XDP-MU110) allows you to integrate select iPods or iPhones into your vehicle's existing factory audio system. You can enjoy great sound from your factory car stereo and compatible iPod/iPhone via the Digital Link Sound System, which features sound settings optimized for your vehicle by using Sony digital sound technology. The Sony Digital Link Sound System (XDP-MU110) consists of a hide-away DSP master unit & iPod/iPhone cradle, plus installation wiring harness and cable.

DSP Master Unit: The hide-away DSP master unit features a built-in 17 watts x 4 channel amplifier and also includes 6-channel 2-volt preamp outputs to enhance your car stereo sound. The DSP master unit offers internal DSP processing for improved car audio sound suited for your type of vehicle.

iPod/iPhone Cradle: The iPod/iPhone cradle connects to the hide-away DSP master unit via an 8' cable. The iPod/iPhone cradle fits the iPod touch and iPhone, but the connector also supports the iPod classic and iPod nano. The iPod/iPhone cradle is fitted with a suction-cup mount that adheres to your vehicle's dashboard.

    Audio Features

45W x 4ch Amplifier: The Sony Digital Link Sound System (XDP-MU110) is equipped with a 17 watt RMS (45 peak) x 4-channel high-power amplifier to drive your car audio speakers. The built-in amplifier improves the sound of existing factory car stereo.

    Note: CEA2006 Output Power - 17W RMS @ 4-ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, <1% THD+N.

2V/6ch Preamp Outputs: The Sony Digital Link Sound System is fitted with 2-volt Front, Rear, and Sub RCA pre-amp outputs to feed an external amplifier for even better sound. The front and rear speaker preamp outputs are balance and fade adjustable. The subwoofer preamp output is non-fading.

Speaker Level Input (w/ 2ch or 4ch mode): The Sony Digital Link Sound System connects to your vehicle's factory car stereo via speaker-level input. You can choose between a 2-channel or 4-channel mode based on the number of speakers you are connecting. Select "2ch" if you connect only the front car speakers to the DSP master unit or "4ch" if you connect your vehicle's front & rear speakers.

Internal DSP: Internal DSP processing improves both your factory audio system playback and your iPod touch or iPhone playback. This system provides well balanced sound, which appears to come from in front of the driver's seat, optimized for the vehicle type by setting the DSP master unit. The hide-away DSP Master Unit utilizes 3 multi-position switches to adjust 12 different DSP parameters, so the sound can be customized to fit your ride.

    • Vehicle Size: Select from one of three sizes (L/M/S) based on the air volume of your car.
    • Subwoofer: Select "Y" (yes) or "N" (no) depending on whether you have a separate amp & subwoofer connected to the system.
    • Subwoofer Location: Then select from one of three positions (Far/Mid/Near) based on the distance between the driver's seat and where the subwoofer is located in the vehicle.

Automatic Level Optimizer: The Automatic Level Optimizer adjusts the playback volume level of your connected iPod touch/iPhone to the optimum level.

Tone Control: The Sony Digital Link Sound System offers Bass (100Hz) & Treble (7kHz) control that is adjustable from -7dB to +7dB.

Balance/Fader: You can adjust the balance between your vehicle's left & right speakers, as well as the fade between the vehicle's front & rear speakers. The system offers a 7 step balance & fade adjustment.

Subwoofer Control: When you have connected a separate amplifier & subwoofer to the system, you can adjust the level of the subwoofer independently from the system's main volume. The subwoofer level can be adjusted from -7dB to +6dB.

    iPod/iPhone Integration

iPod/iPhone Docking Cradle: The Sony Digital Link Sound System (XDP-MU110) includes an iPod/iPhone docking cradle which allows you to connect your iPod or iPhone to your factory car system. The iPod/iPhone cradle is adjustable and features a suction-cup mount. The adjustable cradle can be mounted to your dash and you can then adjust the angle of your iPod touch/iPhone.

Note: The cradle is designed to specifically fit the iPod touch (1st/2nd/3rd/4th gen) and iPhone (2G/3G/3GS/4/4S). Even though the cradle does not fit the iPod classic or iPod nano perfectly, the dock connector does support audio playback, control, and charging of these iPods. See chart below.

Audio Playback: The Sony XDP-MU110 supports audio playback of stored music from your iPod or iPhone, plus streaming music apps on your or iPhone.

Playback Control: The iPod/iPhone cradle and included IR remote control allows you to skip to the next or previous track on your docked iPod/iPhone. All advanced playback functions will be controlled from your iPod/iPhone's clickwheel or touchscreen.

Information Display: The Sony Digital Link Sound System does not feature a separate display. All song, artist, track, and playback information will still be viewed from your docked iPod/iPhone.

Charging: Your docked iPod/iPhone's battery will be charged while the Sony Digital Link Sound System is powered on. If your iPod/iPhone has no initial battery charge, then the unit will not recognize it.

iPod/iPhone Compatibility Chart: The Sony XDP-MU110 Digital Link Sound System is "Made for iPod/iPhone" compatible and supports the following iPod/iPhone model features (as of 4/24/2012):

    Awesome for iPod/iTouch

Written By SteveinTX, Georgetown, TX on Friday, May 17, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this for my wife's Expedition, in the middle of the night without asking any questions. Turns out it isn't recommended for factory stereos with external sub amps, so I shelved it for a bit. Last night I actually opened the boxand looked at the wiring and decided to see what it would sound like in my Malibu. I already had an LC6i installed, along with Focal Access components up front, matching coaxials in back, and 2 Boston 12's, all powered by a PPI 5 ch amp, so installation was literally 12 wires, (the original install of the LC6i and speakers took the better part of a night, not for the timid but doable). After I hooked it up and reconnected my battery I got instany relief when I could hear my warning chimes through the front left speaker, it works. I tnurned on XM and I must confess, was a little disappointed in the sound. Then I connected my wife's iPhone in. I've never heard my Focals that alive. The vocals moved from the floor to center of the dashboard, I could place the instruments on the stage. Incredible imaging, and although I do miss my ACR bass remote, I don't think the LC6i is going back in my car.
    Pros:
Imaging and clarity of iPhone sourced music.
    Cons:
Lack of independent bass control with factory source.

Installed in 2 cars. 1 good, 1 bad

Written By Tylers65, Tacoma, WA on Thursday, May 16, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed 2 in 1 day. 1st: 2012 Focus 5 door SE Sport. Only used the amp and not the ipod controls as the car had the SYNC system. Straight forward install. everything worked as it should have.

2nd: 2008 Honda Civic Si Sedan. Wanted full functionality of amp, ipod control, and RCA output. Install was again, straight forward and easy until I tried to actually use it. The only part that worked was the ipod cradle and control. It made a painfully loud beeping sound that could be heard from my garage into the house prompting my wife to come out and ask what the noise was. The stereo in the car did not work at all. This is because, although Crutchfield assured me that it would work in my car, because my car already has a built in amp (found out after the fact), it will not work because you cannot ad an amplifier in front of an amplifier. Of course, that I knew. My factory stereo is pretty weak so I assumed there was no amp when Crutchfield told me it would work. Needless to say, they were wrong.

WARNING: if you are afraid of cutting wires or cannot follow a wiring schematic, you should hand this to a professional. You will have to look up the color codes of your factory wiring and cut a lot of wires. If you are think you can just toss this thing in and tape some wires together, you are dead wrong. I prepped all the wires beforehand and did a lot of research before starting. Both cars were done and back together in 4 hours even with the issue with the Honda
    Pros:
Amp works well. Nice, clean unit. Would be perfect for an old hot rod that you want to add some sound and ipod control without installing an aftermarket deck. Going to put it in my 65 Beetle since the Honda was a no-go
    Cons:
Will not work with factory amplified systems. Power and ground leads were only 2 feet long while the rest of the wiring was over 6 feet long. Seems like an oversight on their part.

    This set up is Awesome!!!

Written By Mike, Derry, NH on Monday, May 13, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is exactly what I needed to intergrate my iPhone into my 2008 Tacoma, with a factory stereo system. I can now listen to all me apps as well as use the GPS app, while listening misic and take calls all at the same time. I ordered a jumper cable set and built a harness, so the whole install was just a plug in, with no cutting into the factory harnesses. Now I have to get another one for me wifes car.
    Pros:
Complete integration for my iPhone into the stock stereo, where it otherwise would have been impossible. There is also a set of outputs to hook up amps this thing is great.
    Cons:
    N/A

Sony XDP-MU110 Digital Link Sound System

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Good product for use in older cars or if you want to keep a clean factory look
    Pros:
Small for enough for easy mounting almost anywhere in the vehicle
    Cons:
A ton of wiring needed plus you really need to use aftermarket speakers since the speaker wires need to be wired into the unit

    excelent value

Written By james E, Tampa , fl on Friday, May 03, 2013

Installed in a 2013 transit connect work van. This was the least expensive way to add 2 rear speakers and increase the sound quality of the factory sound system . Arrived on time and works great , the hardest part of the install was removing the factory head unit to access the wiring . But still the install time was less than 2 hours.
    Pros:
inexpensive soloution to add speakers and better sound to a bad factory sound system
    Cons:
    none

    Easy as pie.

Written By TF Tignor, Erie, CO on Saturday, April 27, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've never made pie but it can't be harder than this was to install. I am not sure how long it took since I kept being interrupted. 45 minutes tops. Wires are just long enough. Works very well, clear iPhone playing. I will likely buy one for my other car unless we go for the big in dash unit. Fantastic price.
    Pros:
    Price Quality Ease of install
    Cons:
Price is so low I might not buy the big nav/DVD unit.

    Works great

Written By Kropka, Kansas City, MO on Friday, April 26, 2013

Works great. Installed in my Jeep YJ. Iphone holder is hi quality, phone is nicely secured, doesnt vibrate. Downside, physical buttons to control music work only with native music app, does not work with spotify - you have to use screen to control music on 3rd party apps. Tip for YJ owners, you can install this amp behind glovebox (you have to remove it for installation, then install it back in) this way it is out of sight. Currently i'm using it without head unit, meaning this works on its on, does not require standard radio to work. If you have a case on your iPhone, you have to take it off, if you use apple bumper it will fit but very tight.

    Perfect for 01-03 Prius

Written By Rick_atl, Marietta, GA on Wednesday, April 17, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great deal, unbeatable at the closeout price. As some people noted, it's a little complex to install since you need to access all the speaker and power wires. The easiest way is to buy a radio install plug for you car, in addition to what's called a 'reverse' plug (this plugs into your factory radio). You can take these two new plugs, wire and solder or crimp your amp wires to the two new plugs; then what you end up with is a plug and play harness to just add this between radio and car. I unplugged the radio, plugged the car plug into my new harness, then plugged it's new reverse plug into my factory radio. If I ever need to troubleshoot this install, I can just reach behind the radio, unplug my homemade sub-harness, and reconnect the factory plug in 10 minutes. And this is just complex enough that you may need that capability someday. But it is NOT really hard. Just have to figure out which wires to connect where, the plugs come with basic wire color drawings and that you can add to the documentation you get with the Sony. In essence, you just avoid cutting any wires, and add a power and ground. Verify each speaker by touching a 1.5 v flashlight cell to each pair of speaker wires and you'll immediately know you've got LF, RR, or whatever it as supposed to be by the click you hear. Great addition to my car with it's specially shaped factory radio.
    Pros:
Sounds MUCH better, easy I-phone adaptation, has a plug in for sub amp and I think for aux in also.
    Cons:
Takes a little getting used to since you use the radio volume normally with the radio or factory CD, then the remore or cradle volume for ipod/ phone.

    2011 Silverado Non-Bose

Written By Andrew W, Houston, TX on Tuesday, April 16, 2013

I sound treated the doors and upgraded the factory speakers with some well-reviewed offerings from Polk. While they were a definite improvement, the sound from the stock head unit left much to be desired. I determined an upgrade was in order but limited my search those upgrades that maintain a stock look and function.

I honestly choose this offering from Sony based upon the decent reviews and the exceptionally low price. I spent some time to build a few custom harnesses for power and speaker feed so I did not have splice or modify anything factory. The unit is not plug_and_play but with a little research and time it can be made so. Once installed, Onstar, Bluetooth, steering controls, door and warning chimes, everything functions as before.

The sound quality difference is tremendous. I mounted the dock but I doubt I will use it except for the remote. I primarily use the system just as I did before with the iPod plugged into the aux jack on the stock head unit. The DSP is small and hides away easily and if you take the time to do a clean and neat install it appears stock. Setup is simple as the unit sets the equalization, crossover, and time alignment based upon your setting a few switches for vehicle size, sub (y/n), and sub distance from the front seat. The built in amp, if not a powerhouse, is an improvement over stock particularly when combined with the DSP functions. The unit also includes outputs like an LOC so it is an upgrade that can be built upon in the future.
    Pros:
The unit is well made and compact. It offers and excellent upgrade to the factory sound quality at an exceptional price. The remote offers a convenient way to adjust sub volume, as well as other settings, on the fly.
    Cons:
I takes planning and knowledge of you vehicle install it well. There are many connections and they should be soldered. The dock is required to use the remote. Anything plugged into the dock bypasses the stock unit so volume and other setting must be adjusted via the remote when the dock is the source. Also, since the radio is bypassed by the dock any stock functions are bypassed as well when source is set to dock. EQ adjustment is limited to treble and bass, audiophiles cant agonize settings.

I installed the Sony XDP-MU110 Digital Link Sound System on my LSV (Low Speed Vehicle, i.e. street legal golf cart) to replace a motorcycle amp with only mini stereo pin input (which is not specific to any mp3 or smart phone). It was always a hassle dealing with trying to hold the iPod or iPhone and making sure the stereo cable did not to get caught on something. Plus, with stereo pin inputs, the sounds was not always sharp and clear, and riding around you would loose one side or the other at times, and the volume control was very tiny on the amp.

The unit was small enought to fit in the glove box which made installation even easier since there really isn't any other weather proof area. I used the existing motor cycle style speakers, but had to cut the RCA connectors off to wire to the Sony unit. Wish I would have done a little more research on the hookup, so I could have ordered the RCA to stereo adapter which would have deceased the install time a few minutes. However, the sound is much better. Crisper and cleaner, and now can increase the bass and lower the treble.

The dock makes the best addition. Being able to set our iPhone or iPod in the dock and not have to worry about holding it or setting it in a cup holder is great. Wondering how well it will do as we drive around it hit bumps, but it seems to hold on pretty tight.

May be purchasing another one to install on my dad's LSV. Overall, awesome unit! Now I need to add more speakers.
    Pros:
Easy installation. Small footprint. iPod Dock
    Cons:
Don't like the beep, but at least I'll know if on of the kids is messing with the remote. Wish dock was a little deeper and taller to hold the iPod or iPhone with an Otterbox.

    A non-review

Written By JerryS, Bel Air, MD on Thursday, April 11, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I titled this review "A non-review" because I had to return the item to CF without ever having installed it. I purchased it for a 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe with the Monsoon Sound System. It was one of the upgrades the CF offered for that model, but when I talked with CF Tech Support to ask whether it should be installed before the amp or after, I was told that it wouldn't work with the Monsoon system. CF was good about taking it back and even picked up the shipping cost. So I order a Kenwood deck to replace the Monsoon head unit. I am very happy with that.
    Pros:
    price
    Cons:
It will not work with a Monsoon system.

Awesome add on to a factory stereo with out an aux function.
    Pros:
Simple installation and doubles as a line out put converter if u want to add external amplification.
    Cons:
Main inputs of the unit is the rear input. Another con is the unability to see what soundfield you are selecting.

    WHAT A BUY!!!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

What a great product, and for the price its a steal!!! Adds power and clarity to any system, even removes the need for head unit (unless you still listen to AM/FM/CD) Installation is a bit tricky with factory wiring. Definitely research wiring diagrams for your install and take your time, about 20 wire connections must be made properly. Other than that, the DSP sounds fantastic!! Small learning curve with the remote and cradle buttons (no on-screen level indicators, just chirps which cant be removed). I added this to factory 07 Pontiac Torrent system.
    Pros:
Price Function Clarity Add to any system or make this your source Cradle is high quality Charges iPod or iPhone while in cradle Adds sub controls
    Cons:
Installation is not for the novice Only Treble/Bass tuning, no Mid tuning available

I installed this in a 1988 Mersedes from which I did not want to replace the original head unit. The unit works flawlessly and drives four speakers with plenty of sound for a small convertible.
    Pros:
For the price you canrt go wrong.
    Cons:
No usb input only ipod touch.

GREAT Product for 2005 Infiniti G35

Written By Rich H, Greenwell Springs, LA on Thursday, April 04, 2013

This item is amazing - particularly at its Crutchfield cost with free shipping. I bought the Sony XDP-MU110 a while back for its I-Phone integration and after some research didn't think it was what I wanted due to what I thought would be lack of power and difficulty of installation. I was ready to send it back and even got an RMA. Well, after pricing other head units and iPhone adaptors and what it would take to install them, I figured I'd give the item a chance. After all, all I could do was have some fun figuring out how to install it and save a bunch of money. My car is rigged out with 4 Polk Audio 6xi650's, 2 Polk Audio DXi 104 10" subs, all of which I bought from Crutchfield. I also have two other 10" subs installed and 4 tweeters. The subs are driven by a separate 500 watt Kenwood amp. After a better than expected install time thanks to Ed's help from Crutchfield Tech Support, tired and 10:00 at night, the moment of truth came - time to turn it on. Did my install work and was it worth it? To my delight, it powered up and sounded very different - quite amazing actually. Lows, mids and highs are now clean, crisp and clear. The cabin of my car is now "filled" with instruments, not just sound and volume. What an awesome difference between this unit and the Infiniti Bose amp! This is an excellent product for anyone with any type of equipment in their vehicle to upgrade their normally dismal stock system without changing the head unit - even Bose.
    Pros:
Compared to the Bose factory amp with more stated power, this is a stronger and cleaner amp. Spatial Equalization of sound is amazing. Even though the install was a bit difficult, I was able to do it and saved a good bit of money. The little remote gives you more than sufficient control of the system and the iphone cradle works great on the windshield. No LOC or additional hardware required to install except a bit of power wire, wire nuts, and speaker wire.
    Cons:
    It doesn't have bluetooth.

    Great solution for older cars

Not wanting to cut the dash on my classic vehicle, I opted for this solution to add tunes. The Sony is connected directly to speakers and powers my IPhone 4. In addition to controls on the phone cradle, the remote offers the abilithy to control balance, fading and tone. Excellent sound and can't beat the price!
    Pros:
Quality sound at a great price.
    Cons:
    None

    Sony DSP/ AMP

Written By Darren C., Williamsburg VA on Saturday, March 16, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am doing a qiuck review Of this Sony DSP systerm. After looking to find an alternative to ripping out my dash of my 2011 Fiesta and what it would take to go about doing that I decided against it. I had looked at the Cleansweep and other similar devices. But after seing the price on the DSP I thought its only 50 Dollars( As of 3-16). It is a true shame that sony could not get more support for this for themore complex radio's that are coming in cars.

First the install is not for the novice with no prior work done in car audio. But if youhave run speaker wire, amp wiring and so forth this is just a more detailed job. I had by a bluetooth harness for my car due to alot of the newer fords dont have radio a harness yet that sold by Crutchfeild 2011 and up Fiesta, 2012 Focus, 2011 Edge 2012 Explorer.

The install took about 3.5 hours to do including time to build the harness that I joined from a parrot Bluetooth kit for 2011 Up ford's Google search for it. once done and wired the sound is much fuller. But now the stock rear speakers are nearing there limit. The front are Polk audio dxi 6500. And wow did the Sony DSP make a difference.
    Pros:
Much Better sound from factory source thought DSP. The ipod direct sound is very very clear and much more detailed than the usb through My sync system.
    Cons:
No real plug and play. But not big deal just takes more time to install. thats why I gave it a 4 out of 5.

    Stand alone solution

Written By Lemco, Dallas on Friday, March 15, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I couldn't believe the price point on this Sony! Nice little amp and stand alone capability. Perfect for my van, snap the phone in the mount and watch the nav screen as I play music. I completely removed the factory stereo in favor of this set up. No-one is going to smash a window to steal a phone cradle. Keeps it all hidden. Perfect for hot rods!!!!
    Pros:
Awesome sale price. easy install. Remote control.
    Cons:
The remote/track buttons don't work when in an app like Spotify, you'll have to use the screen.
