Pioneer

Our take on the Pioneer CDX-P1280

by Robert Ferency-Viars

Add multi-disc playback to your Pioneer receiver. The silvery-skinned CDX-P1280 holds twelve of your best CDs, CD-Rs, or CD-RWs for a whole night's worth of listening while cruising the town. It decodes CD text and also lets you name 100 discs, to be displayed on a text-compatible Pioneer receiver.

With a 19-1/2' cable and multi-angle mounting ability (0° to 90°), you'll be able to install the changer almost anywhere. The anti-vibration mechanism absorbs shocks, so your discs are protected against skipping. Be sure to add an extra magazine for fast and convenient disc-switching.

Details:
  • 12-disc capacity
  • 100-disc title memory (each title up to 20 characters in length)
  • CD Text decoding (will display on compatible Pioneer receiver)

Pioneer CDX-P1280

Written By Robert, Fremont on Monday, March 07, 2011
Installed in a 1993 Saturn SL1
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was very happy with this item, I have only had the item for about 1 week. So I
will give you what I have so far. The item was easy to install, and the
instruction were very clear and easy to follow. I decided to go the extra mile
because I did not want to damage the interior of the car and made a rear self
mounting plate from 3/4" wood mounted to the rear shelf. That insures that the
item was mount securely and no vibration.

The wiring was very simple and the cables were long enough to attach to the deck
from the trunk.

Loading Disc are easy, and the magazines are easy to manager. The product is
great when paired with a deck to supports it.

I can't believe I'm reading the SAME issue I have!

Written By EL, Phila PA on Sunday, April 11, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Unreal.. I am reading the same problems as what I encountered after 2 yrs too!

At first it looked & sounded like it was loading the discs, and on my head unit
it would say "Ready", but nothing played... Holder would eject.. A few days
later I went to try it again & the head unit would not even say Multi-Disc.. So
in other words, it was not recognizing the player. In the manual that states
that the discs are not loading.. Went to eject the magazine, nothing happens,
just some clicks.. I read something that the grease hardens after 2 yrs & should
be a quick fix... Dropped it off for service.. Anything more than $50, its in
the can!

Don't believe the negative reviews on this product

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Most of the reviews on this product say it stops working after 2 years. I have this exact cd player in my truck, it has been in there since 2003 and it still works like the day i bought it. It is in a 4X4 truck and it has been off road more than once. Needless to say, I don't try to listen to it while I'm on real rough terrain, but it still works fine after 6 years. I just run a cleaning cd in it about every 6 months or so and I do nothing else to it. I have just bought another one to put in my car since I'm so satisfied with the last one.

Interesting Info: Read On

Written By Seanbon008, Bozeman, MT on Tuesday, October 07, 2008

My CDX-P1280 ALSO died after nearly 2 years of minimal use, attached to an AVH-P7500DVD deck. Was an excellent changer before its death. One day I turned my stereo on just to see the screen read "M-CD" then go blank. Tried everything, checked the voltage, took the changer apart and checked connections, etc. with no success. Called Pioneer Electronics and told them about this recurring problem and asked if they recommend the CDX-FM1289 (their version with FM Modulator/can be connected via IP-bus also, so it is a direct swap). They told me that they use the EXACT same motor/internal components as the P1280, and have used this internal system for over 6 years, so therefore the chances of the FM1289 dying in 2 years is pretty high. Hope this helps someone before they buy faulty audio equipment...

Same Story

Written By Albert, Hercules, CA on Sunday, June 01, 2008

My story appears to be the same as almost everybody else's. The changer worked for about a year and a half and then just died. when it did work it was fine, but I wouldn't recommend it simply because of the short lifespan of this unit.

Works good then dies

Written By Anonymous, Orange County, CA on Saturday, April 26, 2008

I would not recommend this product even though I used to work for Pioneer 4 years ago. I always thought there was not much of a difference between the regular Pioneer line and their Pioneer top of the line. Apparently there is since my wife has the Premier disc changer that's 2 years older and it's still working just fine. I only had it for about a year and I probably only changed out my discs 3 times at most.

Pioneer 12-disc changer

Written By dieseldad, elkton, md on Wednesday, January 09, 2008

I guess I am like a lot of others out there. I bought my changer in 2004 and it worked very well until early 2007. Then it started to cross-feed the discs and jam. I was able to get it working again, but that only lasted a few months. Then it started cross-feeding the discs again. I had to disassemble the changer to remove the disc cassett.

The DEH-6700MP is a very good cd changer while it works. Unfortunately I didn't take the advice of other reviewers and learned the hard way. How many times do you need to read the same complaint before you start to see a pattern. Unless you get an extended warranty, I would stay away from this changer.

While it worked, it worked just fine. However, 12 months and a week seems far too short a life for this device. For some reason the CD changer just died. Now I have to find a way to get the CDs out of the box. Bummer...

Works well, good value

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am using this with a DEH-P9800BT, and have been very happy with it so far (5 months as of this review). No skipping, even during road construction season. Sound is great, control is easy with the DEH-9800BT. CD-TEXT works well (when CD includes TEXT data). I often use my iPod, but also like a large magazine of discs so I don't have to switch discs manually on long drives. Good value (discs for the dollar, build quality), and has been working well. Other reviewers mentioned mechanical reliability issues - so far things are working well (I will re-review if I have problems). Very pleased with the whole system (CD changer/head unit/iPod). Highly Recommended!

Not very reliable!!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got this unit back in around June or July of 2003 and it worked and sounded great until a couple of weeks ago, it just decided to die on me when I was ejecting the cd magazines. I thought it just needed to be reset or something is in the way, but I checked and nothing is there and reset doesn't work... all it does is make a clicking sound like some kind of gear is stuck. I think I might go back to Sony equipments because I had a sony cd changer before for 4 years and not a single problem with it.

Mine died too

Written By John, AL on Sunday, May 29, 2005
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought in April 03 and it quit in May 05. After trying to change disks the receiver displayed an error code and the changer would not operate or eject cartridge. I had to remove the internal unit from the outer housing and manually turn the gears to get the cartridge to eject. (had to spin the worm gear on the motor to get the larger gear to start spinning so it wouldn't bind)

Overall it has been working fine until now. Will probably replace it with the same unit unless there is another that is compatible.

Died After 1-yr Warranty Expired

Written By Ed, Linden VA on Wednesday, May 11, 2005

Disappointing CD Changer. I bought it in July 2003, and it died in May 2005. This changer won't read the CD titles, artist, and other information that comes on CDs (ID tags). If you want that information available, they expect you to enter it all in. It also won't play MP3s. Dispite it's internal rubber post shock mounts, my cds still skip if the car hits a bump. But most disappointingly, when I attempted to eject the cd magazine, the thing just died. I had been listening to it... wanted to eject the magazine, press eject.. and it's dead. The reset button doesn't help. It makes no noise. All my cds are stuck inside, and the warranty is expired. So the 12-CD player allows you to loose twice as many CDs when it dies as the 6-CD version. Yes, I checked the fuse, and verified there is power to the unit. Yes, I unplugged it, attempted resets, checked the serial and power connections... nothing helps.

Basic CD changing, CDR&CDRW, No Frills, No MP3

Written By Bugsi, San Jose, CA on Saturday, April 23, 2005

I've owned this model for 6 years. It offers basic, no-frills CD changing, compatible with the IP link in Pioneer's head unit radios. It does play CDR and CDRW audio CDs, but does not support MP3 decoding, making the changer obsolete by current standards. Support for CD Text is nice in theory, but too much work for practical use. A better solution would be MP3 CD support that reads ID3 tags. If Pioneer ever sells a model with these features, I'll replace this changer. Until then, this unit offers basic, no-frills 12 audio disc changing, but no modern MP3 support.
