Why would I need an iPodĀ® adapter?

An iPod adapter allows you to connect your iPod to your car stereo, then access your playlists with your stereo's controls - a great idea for several reasons. One, you can scroll through your song titles on your stereo's larger display, instead of squinting down at your iPod. Two, you can route the adapter cable to your glove compartment or center console, so your iPod stays safely out of sight. Three, the iPod adapter keeps your iPod fully charged, so it's ready to rock when you leave your car. And last of all, some adapters bypass your iPod's internal digital-to-analog converter, using your stereo's superior DAC to turn your files back into music.

Our take on the USA Spec iPod® Interface for Nissan

by Zak Billmeier

You can take it with you. Just because you've got a factory radio in your Nissan or Infiniti, doesn't mean you have to leave your iPod (and the hours and hours of music it contains) at home. Just install USA Spec's iPod interface — it not only allows you to listen to all your favorite tunes through your car's speakers, it even lets you control song and playlist selections right from your radio. And with your iPhone® connected, you can even stream music from popular Internet services like PANDORA®, Livio Radio, iHeartRadio, and more. Plus you'll still be able to connect a CD changer or a satellite radio tuner.

Just mount the compact interface box in a hidden location in your vehicle, and connect the adapter cable to the CD changer input on your compatible Nissan or Infiniti factory radio. Plug your iPod into the interface — you can control volume, source, song selection, and up to five different playlists right from the radio. And the interface charges your iPod while it's connected. You even get an auxiliary input for connecting a Dock & Play satellite radio, MP3 player, or other external source.

Please enter your vehicle information or call an Advisor at 1-888-955-6000 to find out if this adapter is compatible with your vehicle.

    Features

Overview: The USA SPEC PA15-NIS interface connects a compatible iPod to select Infiniti and Nissan audio systems. Its on-board software translates commands from your factory radio's CD-changer or Satellite Radio controls into commands the iPod understands. This interface enables the iPod to coexist with your factory system and provides a line-level input to your audio system for optimal sound quality.

Vehicle Compatibility: This interface enables your iPod to co-exist with the factory CD changer and Satellite Radio receiver of many Infiniti and Nissan vehicles; please check the Crutchfield Vehicle Selector to confirm compatibility. Please consult the Crutchfield Vehicle Selector to see if your vehicle is compatible.

iPod Compatibility: The PA15-NIS is "Made for iPod/iPhone" compatible and supports the following iPod/iPhone model features when connected to a compatible Nissan or Infiniti factory radio (as of 10/11/2012):

    Notes:

    • *The iPod nano (7th gen), iPod touch (5th gen), and iPhone 5 will require the Apple Lightning to 30-pin adapter (sold separately).
    • Apple iPod/iPhone software updates may change functionality results. If you download a newer software version, you may need to reset the head unit and your iPod/iPhone to regain functionality. If this doesn't work, you may need to wait until a newer software update is available.

Dual Control Modes: There are three modes of controlling your iPod: Direct Mode, Playlist Mode, and Folder Mode. Depending upon your factory radio you will need to configure the interface (using the DIP switches) to a combination of the Direct Mode, plus either the Playlist Mode or Folder Mode:

    • Direct Mode: Search and select music on your iPod just as you would normally. You can also use the track up/down button on the radio and steering wheel to control. Screen and click wheel are unlocked and fully functional. There is no text display on the radio while in Direct Mode.
    • Playlist Mode: In this mode, you can operate and control the iPod like it's a CD changer. You can access five playlists on the iPod from the radio. The iPod keypad is locked and not functional.
    • Folder Mode: You can access three folders (Playlist, Artist, and Album) on your iPod from your factory radio. You can also perform search by artist, album, or playlist. The SAT presets are associated with different folders (Playlist, Artist, Album, All Songs, and Genres).

App Streaming (in Direct Mode): Direct mode also lets you listen to the sound from your iPhone's downloaded music apps (such as Pandora, iHeart Radio, SiriusXM, etc.) through your factory head unit & speakers. You will continue to control your iPhone's apps & view song/artist information from its touchscreen.

Note: Your iPhone will need an active Data Plan account with connection to the Internet via 3G, EDGE, or WiFi. You will also need applicable music service accounts.

iPod Text: The Artist name and song title text can be displayed on the radio when using the Folder control mode.

iPod Charging: The iPod's internal battery is charged whenever it's connected to the PA15-NIS; charging stops automatically 30 minutes after the ignition is turned off or the iPod is paused.

Auxiliary Input: In addition to the iPod input on the PA15-NIS there is an auxiliary input (RCA) for use with another source, such as a DVD system, satellite radio, etc. This aux input can be used with or without the iPod connected.

USA Spec iPod® Interface for Nissan

Written By Wendi, Hawley, PA 18428 on Thursday, January 10, 2013

Worked great until it didn't! Awesome for about 6 months, but then completely stopped working for no reason! My stock car stereo still works, but the USA Spec PA-15 installed unit is absolutely invisible! No one would ever know I have it my car because it just one day disappeared!
    Pros:
    Works good!
    Cons:
Only works for a few months!!!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Ordered the product amd installed it myself into 2005 infiniti g35, other than disassembling the console of the car, installation was also simple. Exactly what I wanted in terms of sound quality.
    Pros:
    Simple, easy to use
    Cons:
Is not always immediately ready upon entry to the car, takes a few button pushes.

    Great Car Addition

Written By Ribos R, Baltimore, MD on Tuesday, September 11, 2012
    Installed in a 2004 Infiniti G35
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is an excellent addition for those people looking to install iPod control into their Infiniti or Nissan radios. I installed it on my 2004 G35 in just one night, and would have done it a lot faster, had I not forgotten to fully pushed in a cable all the way the first time I opened up the dash. Installation is fairly intuitive (open up the dash, pull some cables, and install the box in between those cables).

The box has a couple of presets - "Folder mode" for people who enjoy using their buttons on the radio to somehow try and control the ipod in a crazy weird folder structure format, or "Playlist mode" for people who just want access to 4 playlists, which can be user-defined. I personally use the ipod in "user control mode" , which means that you can just push the buttons and wheel on the ipod itself to select which music you want to listen to. The other modes turn off the screen (it says "Connected to NISSAN" or somesuch), so this other mode works really well for me.

It also includes input for an RCA (male) -> auxiliary (male) cable, for people who want to play music from their non-apple phones , so that's good as well.

And sound clarity is great. I love being able to skip songs from the steering wheel, and having the ipod automatically charge and play and pause when I turn on/ off the car. It's awesome.

The instructions that came with the box are a little bit wonky though, I definitely suggest reading them a bunch of times before trying to install.
    Pros:
Easy installation, sound quality, ease of use, Crutchfield's instructions are great
    Cons:
Folder mode is terrible, box instructions are strange

    Great addition

Installed in a 2005 Nissan Maxima
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The install directions were a little unclear as to what to unplug and replug. Fortunately my buddy made good educated guesses. The connection works and sounds great. The controls are a little confusing and will take a little getting used to. I know they can't put every car model in there, but maybe an online reference to see the exact back of your stereo would help.
    Pros:
Not too painful to install. A little time and a lot of patience. Sounds a heck of a lot better than the FM modulator I had.
    Cons:
Directions and pictures are not very clear on how to hook things up to the back of the stereo.

    Great Device for your iPod

Written By Andrew, Radcliff, KY on Tuesday, June 19, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great upgrade from the typical aux connector, the radio transmitters or even the old cassette player adapter for your iPod. I love how the song / artist displays on the screen also. Another thing I have noticed is the sound quality is amazing! It also keeps the iPod charged. Easy to install on my 2005 Murano! However, there is one drawback (see 'Cons'), but I usually keep it in 'Shuffle' mode so it doesn't bother me too much.
    Pros:
Able to see artist / song on display, hidden wires, sound quaility, also has option for aux cable for other devices.
    Cons:
The only downfall to this device is when you want to listen to a particular artist it takes forever to get to it. Let me explain; I have nearly 12 gigs of songs on my iPod, if I'm listening to and artist who's name starts with a 'B', and I want to listen to an artist who's name starts with a 'T', I have to scroll to the 'T's, and with maybe 200 artists in between, I have to press my '>' button 200 times to get to the 'T''s. I guess if it were a kob that I could turn it would be much faster

I was nervous to do this install myself but after I googled how to pull out the radio in my 2005 Nissan Murano it was a piece of cake! I'm glad I didn't pay a professional.....it was too easy!!
    Pros:

    Cons:
Navigating the controls are a little odd....but still beats the FM transmitter!

    Works exactly as advertised

Written By Michael, Los Angeles, CA on Wednesday, February 08, 2012
    Installed in a 2006 Nissan 350Z
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installation on my 2006 Nissan 350z with standard non-bose stereo worked. Some sites say it can't be done, but this product says it can, and it can. You do need to read the guide carefully to set the DIP settings correctly (in my case, I think they are all turned on, and that's the way it came so I didn't even have to adjust anything). Set up was somewhat expected for someone never having ventured inside of cars. The mastersheet was perfect. The hardest part of the installation for me was getting the actual plugs out of the original radio. I'm no good with those big harnesses. There's a little button on the top middle you can push which lets it pop out, but with such limited space it was really difficult. In fact plugging it back in was even harder and I couldn't get it to click in but eventually pushed it enough that I thought it wasn't going anywhere and left it. It works. I ran the wires down below the AC unit, and left the little box from this ipod adapter in there on a little paper towel for some cushion, then ran the iPod cables down by the gear shifter and out the bottom right side of center console. Hid the wires under passenger seat and keep the ipod in the center beverage holder. This thing is great.
    Pros:
Perfect quality, steering wheel controls work, very quick to start playing, possible to install yourself, AUX input AND iPod 30 pin dock connecter. (RCA AUX cable not included), works with standard radio on my 2006 350z (Has two buttons on top: RADIO and CD)
    Cons:
RCA cable for AUX input not included (get your own red and white to AUX 3.5mm cord to add during installation if you want). When using it in Direct / Playlist mode, the iPhone has full controls over music only when preset 5 on the radio is pressed. If 1-4 are selected it still plays but the iPhone just says "audio accessory connected" with no album art or controls available. I prefer the other way, but when I turn it on, it defaults to preset 4. Not a big deal. That's the only con.

    Wow! Excellent sound quality

Installed in a 1999 Nissan Maxima
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I didn't want to replace the excellent-sounding Bose system in my '99 Infiniti I30. A cassette adapter wasn't giving me the sound quality out of Pandora and TuneIn on my iPhone 4. I bought this and installed it - WOW!

Internet radio apps and anything else sounds INCREDIBLE on my factory Bose system now -- way better than the Monster cassette adapter I was using. For a 12 year-old car with a premium sound system that still sounds awesome, this is the ONLY way to go if you want smartphone radio apps blasting through your speakers. Love this thing - although had to remove the entire Bose assembly to get to the changer connectors. But, I didn't even lose my 6-CD changer at all! Very cool. If I ever need an AUX input, I have one now. Thanks USA Spec. Love this gem.
    Pros:
The only way to go without replacing factory unit with a top-of-the-line factory sound system.
    Cons:
Price kinda high for what it is.

    A few added install notes

Written By John Pf, Indian Rocks Beach, FL on Tuesday, October 25, 2011
Installed in a 2004 Nissan Murano
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Wife loves it for two reasons: much better sound quality and volume than via antenna-adapters; charges iPod too.

Note: you need a Y connector cable to use the audio input (2 RCA male to go into unit and mini stereo to go into your audio device)

Crutchfield staff very good as always. Also USA Spec had US techs available too. Manual is confusingly written (probably by the programmer). That's the only reason for 4 stars instead of 5.

Tips: quick search will bring up both helpful photos and videos of radio removal on Murano. Place gear shift in L, place cloth or cardboard on console to prevent scratches, turn radio up side down for better access and view of connector release clips. Use good quality #2 phillips for the 4 screws - they may be very tight and you don't want to strip the heads. Hold lower trim pieces together and insert both up at the same time.

This adapter works excellent. The install was easy and it works seamlessly with my
2006 NIssan Frontier Rockford Fosgate stereo system. I run my iphone on the
direct control mode as that allows me to easily stream Pandora and have touch
screen access to my iTunes library. Definitely worth purchasing as the CD quality
sound trumps any FM transmitter system hands down.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this so I could listen to my iphone 4 in my infiniti, everywhere I
called they wanted 250 or higher for installation telling me how difficult it
is. After purchasing this at a great price and following the instructions, it
was much easier then I expected, I installed it the very same day that I got it.
The only thing I would have to say is that the usa manual diagram picture of the
radio is not exact to the car. One plug goes into the plug that fits into the
white socket and the other goes into one of the black sockets. It took me 45
minutes to do the install and that's only because I was confused by the picture.

    iPod Adapter

Written By Beamnj, New Jersey on Wednesday, January 26, 2011
    Installed in a 2006 Infiniti G35
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased this for my wife's Infiniti G35x and have been enjoying the freedom of
listening to what we want when we want vs. the same ole local radio playlists. The
difficulty of upgrading the Infiniti radio system made this adapter the perfect choice and
kept our expenses well below our budget limit. Does not provide great flexibility with the
non-Bose system installed in the car (on screen display is limited, control of iPod is
limited), but once you have the iPod connected it can be manually changed by selecting
CD 5 or 6 position on the stereo. Not the most desireable action while driving!
Additionally, I'm not sure it is charging the iPod in these positions. In CD 4 the iPod
works great, you have limited display capabilities, but can change tracks easily by the
stereo controlls. Other CD positions will scroll to the next playlist on the iPod, but for my
wife we have not created playlists on her Nano and that works just fine for her. On my 5th
gen iPod the playlist scrolling can become confusing without display capabilities since I
have multiple playlists established. However, when I get to the heavy metal list why
    move from there!!!
I have a fully integrated Kenwood system in my F-150 (CD, DVD, GPS, iPod) so I'm a bit
spoiled, but overall I would not trade this unit in unless someone offered me a full
integrated system to replace the factory stereo. Don't see that happening so we will
continue to roll on down the highway singing the tunes of our choosing.

EASY Install! Inexpensive! But not a replacement for full aftermarke

Written By San Diego, CA, Bonita, CA on Tuesday, December 28, 2010
    Installed in a 2010 Nissan 370Z
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First off, this is a VERY easy install, depending on how hard it is to take apart your dash.
It's also very inexpensive. However, how it works isn't the best; but I know it isn't easy to
engineer a universal OEM integration that works with many models of cars. My initial
misconception with the interface is that it does NOT allow scrolling by names (370Z
Bose stereo). You press channel up, you get "CH" +1 displayed, and a short while later
(depending on the display you've chosen), you get song title, album, etc. Navigating thru
a large list of songs is tedious, but MUCH better than fumbling with a scroll wheel while
    driving.
Don't get me wrong, for the price, it's slick and useful. But down the road (1-2 years), I'll be
looking for a touch screen based aftermarket install. If you want true OEM integration,
this works fine, and is worth the money paid. Just be prepared for the interface quirks
imposed by the limitations of working within OEM stereos.
