Overview: The Pro-Ject Phono Box II USB allows you to connect a turntable with either a MM (moving magnet) or MC (moving coil) cartridge to today's home receiver's and amplifier which do not offer a dedicated phono input. The Pro-Ject Phono Box II USB also allows you to transfer analog audio from your vinyl records onto a PC or Mac using USB 1.1 protocol.

Metal Case: The Phono Box II USB's metal case shields the electronics from vibration and electromagnetic interference.

Dual-Mono Circuitry: The Phono Box II USB provides optimal channel separation through dual-mono circuitry and low-noise ICs.

RIAA Equalization: The Pro-Ject Phono Box II USB provides amplification and RIAA equalization for both MM and MC cartridges.

Phono (MM/MC) Button The Phono Box II USB can be used in either MM (moving magnet) or MC (moving coil) mode according to the type of turntable cartridge. There is a button on the back of the unit which allows you to switch between MM or MC mode.

RCA Connections: The Phono Box II USB features gold-plated stereo RCA connections. A stereo RCA input connects your turntable and a stereo RCA output connects your home receiver or amplifier.

Note: RCA cables sold separately.

A/D Converter with USB Output: The Phono Box II USB features a built-in A/D converter with a mini-USB type-B output and comes with a USB type-A cable to record your vinyl music to a PC or Mac computer. Your computer must have a suitable recording program installed (the Phono Box II USB does not provide built-in recording software).

I purchased the Pro-Ject Phono Box II USB preamp to aid in digitizing my extensive LP collection to add to my SqueezeBox Touch network music player. It is the perfect product for this use since it has a USB output port that connects directly to my computer. While my audio receiver (a Harman Kardon 3490) has a phono input, I noticed immediate and much improved sound production when running my Harman Kardon turntable through the preamp. For digitizing purposes, the quality of sound is very robust and clear and, thus far, I haven't been able to discern any real degradation of sound quality. I am recording the files on my PC as .wav files and use a nifty software program called "Vinyl Studio" which was designed for this type of project. I am very pleased with the results overall and highly recommend this product - particularly if you are wanting to digitize beloved LPs that have been gathering dust.

The Pro-Ject Phono Box II USB preamp is connected to my receiver using AudioQuest G-snake RCA cables. The supplied USB cable was a little too short for my purposes, but I purchased a Belkin USB extension cable that solved the problem and with no loss of sound quality.

The Pro-Ject Phono Box II USB preamp is yet another high quality product from an always reliable Crutchfield.
Pros:

Cons:
1. Supplied USB cable is very short - but that was easy to solve by purchasing a USB extension cable.

Only game in town

This seems to be the only moving-coil preamp with USB interface I could find, and on my Yamaha PX-3 with Yamaha MC-5 (?) cartridge it certainly results in digital music files far superior to my other turntable or even my old Sony PS-LX510.

My only concern so far is that the first 70 or so seconds of one of my album side recordings had quite a bit of distortion. Since I purchased this as an open box item to save 10%, it's possible that this is why the unit was returned to Crutchfield in the first place, and perhaps they retested and didn't experience the problem, since it appears to be intermittent. I simply re-recorded the album side and it seemed fine to me the second time around. But in the future, I'll think twice before buying open-box.
