USA Spec

Why would I need an iPodĀ® adapter?

An iPod adapter allows you to connect your iPod to your car stereo, then access your playlists with your stereo's controls - a great idea for several reasons. One, you can scroll through your song titles on your stereo's larger display, instead of squinting down at your iPod. Two, you can route the adapter cable to your glove compartment or center console, so your iPod stays safely out of sight. Three, the iPod adapter keeps your iPod fully charged, so it's ready to rock when you leave your car. And last of all, some adapters bypass your iPod's internal digital-to-analog converter, using your stereo's superior DAC to turn your files back into music.

Our take on the USA Spec iPod® Interface for Volvo

by Tim Sprinkle

You can take it with you! Just because you've got a factory radio in your Volvo, doesn't mean you have to leave your iPod (and the hours and hours of music it contains) at home. Just install USA SPEC's iPod interface — it not only allows you to listen to all your favorite tunes through your car's speakers, it even lets you control song and playlist selections right from your radio. And with your iPhone® connected, you can even stream music from popular Internet services like PANDORA®, Livio Radio, iHeartRadio, and more.

Just mount the compact interface box in a hidden location in your vehicle, and connect the adapter cable to the CD changer input on your compatible 2001-up Volvo factory radio. Plug your iPod into the interface — you can control volume, source, song selection, and up to five different play lists right from the radio. And the interface charges your iPod while it's connected! (Note: the adapter is compatible with all iPod and iPod mini models equipped with a dock connector and iPod software update 2004-04-28, or higher.)

Please enter your vehicle information or call an Advisor at 1-888-955-6000 to find out if this adapter is compatible with your vehicle. As the iPod interface uses the CD changer port, any existing changer that you have must be disconnected.

Compatibility Note: Be sure to check "Hands-on Research" for specific iPod model compatibility with this iPod adapter.

    Notes:

    • *The iPod nano (7th gen), iPod touch (5th gen), and iPhone 5 will require the Apple Lightning to 30-pin adapter (sold separately).
    • Apple iPod/iPhone software updates may change functionality results. If you download a newer software version, you may need to reset the head unit and your iPod/iPhone to regain functionality. If this doesn't work, you may need to wait until a newer software update is available.

Control Modes: The iPod interface adapter features the following control modes.

    • Playlist Mode: You can create up to 5 favorite mobile playlist then use your radio's CD changer controls to access and control your playlist.
    • Direct Mode: Gives you complete control of your iPod while it is connected to the factory radio. Your iPod is not locked out while connected to the radio and you are able to manually access your complete iPod content. The Radio still can adjust song up/down random or shuffle play but you can manually control your iPod and select any playlist, genre or Artist of your choice.
    • Dual Mode: Combines features of Direct Mode and Playlist Mode. You can create and access your favorite mobile playlist or directly access all your iPod content manually on your iPod. Your iPod displays song title information and iPod is not locked, so the iPod can be operated manually at all times. (Referred to as "Hybrid Mode" in manual.)

App Streaming (in Direct Mode): Direct mode also lets you listen to the sound from your iPhone's downloaded music apps (such as Pandora, iHeart Radio, SiriusXM, etc.) through your factory head unit & speakers. You will continue to control your iPhone's apps & view song/artist information from its touchscreen.

Note: Your iPhone will need an active Data Plan account with connection to the Internet via 3G, EDGE, or WiFi. You will also need applicable music service accounts.

Playlist Names: In order for the adapter/factory radio to recognize a playlist, it should be named VOLVO1... through VOLVO5... Text can follow the Volvo name and number, such as VOLVO3_artistname or VOLVO2-jazz. For a given disc slot (1-5), if there is no playlist named VOLVO followed by that number, that disc slot will play the first available playlist on the iPod (the second blank slot will play the second available playlist, etc).

Auxiliary Input: In addition to the iPod input on the PA11-VOL there is an auxiliary input (RCA) for use with another source, such as a DVD system, satellite radio, etc. The aux input is accessed at disc 6 track 1 using the factory radio controls. This aux input can be used with or without the iPod connected. When using the aux input in the Playlist Mode, the Play All mode is moved to the Disc 5 slot and the VOLVO5 custom playlist is lost.

Playlist Mode Controls: In Playlist Mode the iPod is controlled using the CD Changer commands on the factory radio. Use the Radio's Disc Select controls to access the 5 custom mobile playlists, the Play All mode, or the auxiliary input. Track select, forward and backward, works just like on a CD. Other commands include shuffle play, scan (plays first 10 seconds of each track), Fast Track Search (skips forward or backward 10 tracks), and Fast Forward/Fast Reverse within a song (available in shuffle mode only).

Battery Charge: The PA11-VOL charges iPod battery when connected. Charging stops after 1 hour of non-use to prevent draining the vehicle's battery.

CD Changer Port: The adapter uses the factory radio's CD Changer port so if the vehicle has an existing outboard CD Changer it must be disconnected.

Pause: When a non-iPod source is selected on the radio (AM/FM/Cass/CD) the iPod pauses.

Resume: If the iPod is not disconnected after use, it will resume playing where it left off when you restart the vehicle.

    USA Spec Comes Thru Again

Written By ODBMon, Knoxville, tn on Wednesday, May 15, 2013
    Installed in a 2008 Volvo S60
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed one of these in an '04 S60 and loved it so much that when we got another, USA Spec was the only way to go. USA Spec takes a great sound system and turns it into a super , over the top HD sound system. I would have given it five stars if it were able to display track info.
    Pros:
    Over the top sound.
    Cons:
Limited playlists and no song/artist info display.

    Even better than I expected! 2001 S60 T5

Written By Ken C., Austin, Texas on Thursday, September 20, 2012
    Installed in a 2001 Volvo S60
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have never used CrutchField before this order but I was very pleased with the ease of use and information on the website, fast shipping, the extra care they took to put their own installation instructions into the order and the fact they had installation support if they needed them (though luckily I didn't). Only recommendation I would have is that I did a lot of googling of others who have installed this product to try and learn from them and one of the most helpful items was a youtube video from a private car a/v company that walked through the installation. It'd be great of Crutchfield did the same because that made it very clear for me.

I have a 2001 Volvo S60 T5 and after I got the climate control out (tricky if you've never done it before because of the brackets you can't see, after you've done it once it is easy) the installation was a snap. Hint on the bracket: after you unscrew the climate control below the unit, tilt the bottom out about 30 degree or just enough to be able to grab the unit, then pull straight out, you may need to put a screwdriver behind the top part on the sides to lever it out a bit. Overall very easy installation, even for someone like me who has never taken apart their car stereo before.
    Pros:
Ipod connection has excellent sound quality and the aux in is a little fuzzy but definitely decent and way better than an FM transmitter.
    Cons:
I have an iPhone 3GS so the DIP switch configurations didn't work exactly as described in the manual. The AUX one worked perfectly for me but the other one I had to switch to the opposite position before my phone worked. Since there are only 2 positions this wasn't a big deal just took some trial and error to get my particular phone working.

This is my 4th car I've equipped with a USA Spec iPod adapter and it works perfectly in my 2002 Volvo S60 . Installation was simple. Master Sheet wasn't specific on radio jack and power connections, but a quick call to Tech Support on a Sunday cleared it up. Great Tech Support as always!

    Works Great

Written By Rick13, Sag Harbor, NY on Friday, February 24, 2012
    Installed in a 2003 Volvo XC70
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

No problems installing on 2003 Volvo XC70. Instructions were a little vague, but were good enough for someone who knows what they are doing. It works exactly as described with the radio. I found a nice place to mount the box in the front of the center console and ran the wires up the left side into the armrest through a hole I drilled. Great sound quality compared to tape cassete input.
    Pros:
Works great. Best choice to use an iPod with the factory radio.
    Cons:
    None

Worked with old iPod, not working w/new iPod Touch

Written By DaveVolvo, Chicago, IL on Wednesday, September 07, 2011

It worked ok (periodic static was present) with my really old iPod and my two year old iPod Touch, but it's not working with the 4th generation iPod Touch that I bought the other day. I emailed USA SPEC yesterday asking them about it, but so far no response.

As far as the periodic static that I heard (when the older iPods were in use), I'm not sure if that's an installation issue or not...even though I had it professionally installed.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall I am happy with this product. It was fairly easy to install (I am a complete amateur). The things sounds great in my xc70. The only complanint I have is that the cable that you attach to the head unit needs to be a foot or so longer. As it is it limits the places you can install the unit. It is not bad but another 12 inches sure would have made things easier.

Works fine, poor documentation, no installation guide

Written By Russ C, Portland, OR on Tuesday, February 08, 2011
    Installed in a 2002 Volvo S40
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The unit works as advertised. I have installed similar iPod interface products before. This is
comparable in function, quality and ease of installation. Installation in my 2002 Volvo S40
    took about two hours.
The operating instructions are poorly-translated from Japanese. It takes some time to
    understand them.
Crutchfield provided no installation guide, which was disappointing. They usually do better
than that, and that is one of the reasons I buy from them. I could have paid less elsewhere for
the same product without an installation guide.

    Great Product - Easy Install

Written By RobertB, Raleigh, NC on Saturday, January 22, 2011
    Installed in a 2002 Volvo S60
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was very easy to install and the sound quality is excellent. Crutchfield provided very
detailed instructions for getting into the Volvo dash for connecting the interface. I did call
to ask which wires should be used for power and ground. The Crutchfield help person
told me exactly which ones and gave good suggestions for getting the wires attached.

Besides liking the very high sound quality you get from connecting directly to the radio
via the external cd changer plug, I also chose this item for safety reasons. I have a
young driver and like that you can use the existing Volvo remote controls on the steering
wheel to skip to the next song on the ipod and adjust the volume. A big plus. It also
charges the ipod which is nice.

One hint, don't ignore the warning about disconnecting the vehicle battery first. I didn't
and when I disconnected the climate control wiring harness, it tripped the airbag
warning. Had to take it to the dealer for a reset. Fortunately, they didn't charge for it
since there was other work to be done.

USA Spec iPod® Interface for Volvo

Written By Anonymous, Charlotte, NC on Wednesday, August 11, 2010
    Installed in a 2005 Volvo S60
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is the second USA iPod interface that I have installed and it was just as simple as the first, which is in my '05 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The instructions from Crutchfield made removing the radio simple and the unit was easy to install. I did have to make one quick trip to by some 'wiretaps' so I could tap into the power of the car so the interface would get power. Once that was done, I hit the box and replaced the radio and everything was ready to go.

Two Hours and I had my iPhone back

Written By Amanda, Macon, GA on Sunday, March 28, 2010
    Installed in a 2005 Volvo S60
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I received the device three days after I ordered it and installed it in 2 hours. The directions that shipped with the device failed to mention the a torx T25 sized screwdriver was required for my 2005 Volvo S60. I used that tool, some electrical tape, and crimp-on connectors for the power (yellow wire to red stero wire and black wire to the brown stereo wire). It was an easy install and the sound quality is great. I use the direct access setting and control the iPod directly. I also purchased a mount to put my iPhone in reach. This setup works great for listening to Slacker or Pandora and podcasts as well as music.
Great device and great service from Crutchfield as always.

    Wow Factor - 2002 Volvo S60 HU-803

Written By JT, Austin, TX on Wednesday, November 04, 2009

Just installed this in my 2002 Volvo S60 with the HU-803 head unit to interface with an iPhone 3GS. The USA Spec adapter really takes advantage of the stock Volvo sound system. Bass has more oomph and the clarity at the high levels is remarkable compared to previously utilized FM transmitters. I am hearing details in the music I have not heard in years.

The installation went splendidly. NOTE: Crutchfield's instructions tell you not to disconnect the radio, but you should be concerned about the climate control panel. If it is disconnected while the battery is still connected, then it will trigger a (false) issue with the SRS system requiring a ~$90 dealer charge to turn off the light. Simple fix: disconnect the battery before beginning the installation process. Then, removing the radio and climate control panel will be a non-issue.

As for control, I set the DIP switches with Direct Mode enabled. While I can control the iPhone 3GS using the iPhone controls directly, a surprise was that the steering wheel controls also work. Given that the unit interfaces the radio in place of the factory installed external CD changer, song info is not displayed on the unit. Instead, DISK XX TRACK YY show up, just as normal CD playback works.

    Great accessory!!!

Works in my 2002 Volvo V70

Written By Anonymous, Southern California on Friday, September 18, 2009
    Installed in a 2002 Volvo V70
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a 2002 Volvo XC70 with the factory HU-613 radio without navigation or an external CD changer. I have an iPhone 3GS and wanted to charge and listen at the same time, and have the system automatically mute with incoming calls, etc.

This product allows all those features, though it states it is not made for this accessory when plugged into the iPhone. I opt to bypass the warning and leave the phone functions on regardless and have no issues. If my placement of the iPhone is too close to the radio, you might get a slight feedback in the audio though.

Install was pretty easy, but, the Crutchfield instructions provided are very helpful in removing the radio from the dash, but there were no specific instructions in what wires to use for power or ground (red and brown, respectively). I was able to sort this out via the online forums. I used "Tap-In Squeeze Connectors".

Function: Function is okay for iPhones. You have to use Direct mode, which means accessing and changing songs on the phone instead of through the radio or steering wheel buttons. This would probably drive me nuts with an iPod, but is no big deal with iPhone/iTouch.

Improvements: It would be great if the song title would play over the radio, and if the control buttons on the dash worked. It would be even better if it was specifically made for iPhone and did not prompt you to go into Airplane mode when you plug it in, but overall....

    Is it worth it? YES!

Just installed and it sounds great. Make my Siruis Plug and Play and IPOD
sound great!! I do alot of driving but was very happy with my factory radio
and didn't want to change it out. I have Siruis and an IPOD and this solved
all my problems. Very easy install and it all sounds great. You need to get a
good cable for your other device if adding something with an IPOD.
Worth the money and Crutchfield support great like always!!

This is a great adapter. I purchased one for Christmas and it was defective (bad cable). I replaced it through USASpec's warranty and that took about 3 weeks. Now that it is installed I love it. The only flaw seems to be related to the random mode. I cannot "randomly" change songs using the next >> and previous << buttons on the steering wheel or the stereo. Random mode works though, you just can't skip around using the stereo controls. However you can very easily switch songs just using the ipod - which is almost just as easy.
This unit pauses the song you are listening to when the car stops and picks right back off where you left off the next time the car starts.
    I installed this in a 2005 XC70 with the HU650 stereo.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Adding this to my 2004 S60R was easy. Took less than an hour. Only down side is that you have to have your IPOD out to see what is playing. The head unit does not display song titles. Over all, I am very satisfied with this item. I am going to install it on my wife's 2007 S60R next.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was worried after reading the other reviews that I would have a problem modifying the plug to make it work but when I got it, I found that the manufacturer had listened to the criticisms and fixed the right angle connector. They also changed the playlist mode to a new mode called hybrid which allows you to use playlists and still have direct access to your ipod. A big plus if you plan to use the aux input. I gave it a 4 instead of a 5 because the instructions were not vehicle specific. I had to call up crutchfield to find out which wire was the constant power I needed to tap into (Its the red one). NOTE: I KNOW IT IS A PAIN ON VOLVOS, BUT YOU NEED TO DISCONNECT THE BATTERY BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING OR YOU WILL BE SPENDING $90 AT THE DEALERSHIP TO GET THE SRS-AIRBAG LIGHT RESET. IT HAPPENED TO ME.
