Who needs a powered subwoofer?

To produce bass, you need a sub, an enclosure, and an amplifier, and it can be little tricky to match them all up. A powered sub eliminates all the hassle, as the manufacturer designs the enclosure to house the sub and amp together. This all-in-one solution is especially useful in smaller vehicles, where there's no room to mount a separate amp, or in any vehicle where you need every bit of cargo space. Powered subs range from small, flat boxes that fit under your seat to larger boxes that go in your trunk.

Our take on the MTX RT8PT

by Jo Greene

Got a small vehicle but need big bass? MTX's Road Thunder powered subwoofer delivers strong performance from an optimized combination of sub, enclosure, and amp. And the compact cylindrical enclosure offers a great, all-in-one solution for getting good bass from a small trunk or other tight locations.

A rugged 8" sub and unique enclosure
The RT8PT powered sub features an 8" Road Thunder woofer that uses a stiff poly cone and durable rubber surround for reliable performance in the long run. The uniquely shaped cylindrical enclosure is ported in the back for loud, fat bass. Gray industrial grade carpet protects the enclosure, and showcases the MTX logo printed on the side.

120 watts RMS
The rugged amp mounted on the back of the enclosure delivers 120 watts of clean, stable power for convincing low notes. Low-pass filter and gain controls let you adjust the sound to fit your ride and your style, while preamp and speaker-level inputs give you connection options. You can control the bass action from the driver's seat with the included wired remote.

Highlights:

  • amplified 8" subwoofer enclosure

    Quality Product

Written By louisk, Guam on Sunday, April 28, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This sub is excellent. Greatly enhances car stereo, and doesn't take up all your trunk space. It looks great too! This is the second MTX sub that I've installed and I can assure you not the last. I wish I bought my first one from crutchfield! It would have saved me time and money. Their customer service is great, and you can't beat free priority mail shipping. For the price of this sub, what more could you ask for?
    Pros:
Good sound, compact, easy to install, great price, high quality enclosure
    Cons:
    Hard to think of any.

    Perfect

Written By Steven, Charleston, WV on Saturday, April 27, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this in a 97 Jeep Wrangler. I am running it through alongside a Kenwood KMU-100 reciever and Polk Speakers as well as an Alpine KTP445U Amplifier.

The install did not take long and only one call to tech services. Most of the time was just running the wiring front to back. Grounded it through the passengers seat. I don't have the rear seat in my Wrangler so I just made it an extension of the center console. They are about the same height and are the same color so it worked well and left enough room for the heat to bleed off. With so may things to install behind the dash and along the body all I can say is invest in zip ties. The remote is also a huge plus. I just velcroed it to the front of the center console. This is also how secure the unit to the carpet in the cargo area. Two long strips of double sided velcro seems to have done the trick.

This unit sounds amazing. It is the "fill in" that I was looking for where the Polk Speakers did not have much low end, even though they are great speakers just small. You can more than "feel" unit work even with it firing to the rear of the vehicle. I read some reviews complain that they could not "hear" the bass. All I can think is that they did not adjust the levels or who knows. You can basically turn the unit all the way "down" and "up" as to how much low end it is putting out. As a caveat I listen to metal. It has plenty of double bass and blast beats and this unit bring it all out beautifully.

    Pros:
You can install on your own Remote in the drivers cockpit The sound and punch is incredible Amazing price.
    Cons:
Inside the Jeep it is still a foot print but that is not the units fault. Everything is a tight fit. I understand the need to advertise your product but it would be nice to not have MTX stamped all over it. Might as well say "steal me" on it.

A good overall powered enclosure for its price. Will not hit the sub-bass notes but puts out nice clean bass. Install is easy and straight forward.
    Pros:
Compact and light. Remote bass control for quick adjustments.
    Cons:
A bit punchy. Upper bass causes it to distort quickly.

Just Right!!! Works perfect in the mini-van with the new media input deck and some 5 1/4" 3way speaks in doors and 4" x 8" 2ways in back pannels. No big deal running a dedicated power lead to the battery for this self amplified unit. This sub fits perfect under the front of the middle seat of the van. Perfect touch to the rest of the system! I like the remote level control for adjusting bass volume on certain types of music such as: AC/DC, the Crystal Method, Datsik, all the way to Zeppilin! It doesn't matter because it all sounds great with this lil MTX RT8PT thumper!
    Pros:
    Works perfect.
    Cons:
no protective grill over the speaker. (Be careful I guess)

Big Bang for a little buck! Easy to install and easy to adjust. This unit is nice that it is self contained. Fit well in a small cargo space.
    Pros:
This unit is small and compact for my application. Nice sound quality for the low power rating. Great addition to a stock stereo system.
    Cons:
The straps are a bit junky. Would be nice to have a grill cover over speaker.

    Fantastic

Written By Brandon, Kansas City on Saturday, January 05, 2013

I have had this sub for a year now, and am still pleased. I wanted to add a little depth to my car stereo, and this sub does not disappoint. I wanted something small, self powered, and built by a reputable company. This sub sounds excellent and does not take up a lot of space.
    Pros:
You can hear and feel the lower frequencies well enough, and not annoy everyone else around you.
    Cons:
Not as powerful as separate components, but there is more than enough to satisfy.

I have a small car so I thought this wud be perfect. I connected it to my stock radio, so I had to tap off my speaker leads. I was worried it would not respond good enough. But it is perfect. More than enough bass. And since I only have 4x6 plates and 4" in dash....the speakers do not have any bass but the MTX creates all the bass needed....it sounds perfect.
    Pros:
fairly smaller, excellent looks and construction

Seems great and heard from other people. Havent installed it yet because to do it professionally, costs alot. The local shop wants $200+ to do it. But hope to get it installed soon. Cant wait!
    Pros:
Inexpensive, big bass. Compact and good looks
    Cons:
Need to include everything to install it. Installation and wiring costs more than the speaker alone. Thats not cool

I use an Alpine CDE-103BT for my head end and combined with the MTX RT8PT I'm getting some fantastic bass sound... The installation with the wiring kit went smooth and by the numbers with no difficulties what so ever... A great combination for anyone who wants decent sub-woofer sound without installing an amp...
    Pros:
    Great sound and easy installation
    Cons:
a little bit larger than I thought it would be but it still works great!!

Professionaly installed as part of a 4 speakers system (coaxial) powered by a 4 ch amp and JVC Arsenal head unit in a LandCruiser FJ80. It is so weak that the installer appologized. I do not listen to Rap or any other type of music full of bass but I do enjoy the fullness a good sub provides and this isnt it. I understand it is only 8 inches but it is mounted inside a wagon type vehicle. No matter which way the installer angled it, we could barely hear it let alone feel the bass. Fortunately this is a hunting vehicle/BOV and not a daily driver. Better to spend a bit more and go with a traditional setup than to buy this product and feel like you just lost $200. I would not recommend to a friend.
    Pros:
    Great concept Nice price
    Cons:
Very poor power wise. Bass gets drowned by my speakers.

    Do not recommend

Written By BenR, Jacksonville, FL on Wednesday, November 16, 2011

Bought this for my infiniti g35 sedan. The installer guessed that my car must be insulated really well, because you cannot hear the sub AT ALL. It's not that the bass isn't good - you can't even hear it to judge whether it's good or not. I do not recommend this product if you have a sedan. Total waste of money. They should tell you that this is for hatchback/open cab installations only. Boo.

If you are looking for something to disturb you neigbhors look elsewhere. It will get loud and it sounds great though. Highly recommend.

Finally..... Bass in my Jeep Wrangelr

Written By Ron, Magnolia, NC on Tuesday, October 25, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I looked around for a long while before deciding on this powered sub. The first one I received would not work. I called tech support at Crutchfield and they walked me through several tests that verified the unit was not working. I have no previous experience installing anything like this but tech support was great at explaining how and why I doing each test.

Crutchfield had another unit to me in a couple of business days so you could not ask for more than that. Sometimes things are defective so they made it right same day.

This one worked and it sounds great....More than what I was expecting. I would recommend this to anyone looking to fill that bass void but not to "over the top".

Jeep info...I have the inta-truck in my cargo area and the sub sound great. And of course this protects my sub from theft. I was concern trunk would kill the sound but not true...The bass is strong.
    Pros:
Supplied "fullness" in music I was missing. Compact Feels well built.
    Cons:
First one delivered would not work (thermal protection mode light was on immediately) Powered remote light is too bright mounted under my dash. It is like a red laser pointer light..too much. Would have been nice to offer (addtional carpet colors)....No big deal.

It sounds great on my 04 Odyssey and after a little tweeking on my Pioneer's AVIC-D2 settings i was impressed. it gave it a feel of an high end audio system you know the ones that BMW, Mercedes and Acura's come with, you won't wake up your neighbors but inside the car it sounds great!

    Big sound, little package

Written By Scott C., Fort Worth, TX on Saturday, September 17, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've had a number of powered subs through the years, and this blows all the others away...in every way. The bass from the 8" is unbelievable. The overall size of the package versus how much you get out of it is really amazing. The price will fit virtually any budget, and is an absolute bargain. Installation is an absolute breeze. and you can fit it almost anywhere, except under a seat. I put this in the cargo area of my Isuzu Rodeo and it really doesn't negatively impact cargo space enough to be a concern. With my JVC KDA-615, Kicker KS-400's (yes, 4"), and the RT8PT, any kind of music sounds absolutely perfect...from classical to rap, country to rock. Thank you Crutchfield for the affordable and yet amazing sounding car stereo system!
