Tamron

Our take on the Tamron 28-300mm Di VC Lens

by Dave Bar
Tamron 6 Year Limited Warranty

Pair your Nikon SLR camera with this high-quality Tamron lens to enjoy powerful telephoto shooting and a large, flexible zoom range. The 28-300mm Di VC lens works with both digital SLR cameras and conventional 35mm autofocus SLR film cams. It provides an impressive 465mm ultra telephoto focal length when used with an APS-C sensor digital camera. And it lets you capture creative compositions at the 28mm wide angle setting with a full-frame digital or 35mm film camera.

Vibration compensation for in-focus shots in all lighting conditions
We've all taken a picture and had it turn out blurry because our hands moved a little while we were capturing the shot. Vibration Compensation works around this problem. Built-in motion sensors steer a special set of optical elements inside the lens, neatly offsetting camera movement and stabilizing the image. You get much sharper pictures — even in low-light conditions where hand motion can easily cause blurred images with a regular lens.

    Features

Overview: The Tamron AF 28-300mm F/3.5-6.3 XR Di LD Aspherical IF Macro (Model A20N2) is an accessory lens, specifically designed for use with Nikon digital SLR cameras. It has the standard Nikon bayonet-type mount. This lens covers a broad range of focal lengths, from a wide 28mm to a super telephoto 300mm (the 35mm equivalent of 43mm to 465mm when used on an APS-C digital SLR.)

Compatibility: This lens is compatible with Nikon digital SLR cameras, including the following models: D40, D50, D60, D70, D80, D200, and D300.

Di Lens: Tamron Di (Digitally Integrated Design) lenses are designed to fit the characteristics of digital cameras as well as film cameras by paying attention to countermeasures against ghosting and flare through such advances as special coatings.

Vibration Compensation (VC): The lens is equipped with a Vibration Compensation mechanism which reduces the image blur caused by hand-held shooting, especially at maximum zoom. Blurry pictures can also be the result of shooting in dimly lit locations, or where flash photography is forbidden. When using the VC feature, pictures can be taken at shutter speeds up to a maximum of 4 stops slower than the speed when the VC isn't used. The VC feature can be turned on/off with a switch on the barrel of the lens.

Optical Features: This lens has the following optical features:

    • Aspherical Elements (ASL): The use of Tamron's exclusive Hybrid Aspherical elements provides the ultimate in compactness and image quality.
    • Low Dispersion Glass (LD): The use of Low Dispersion (LD) glass elements greatly reduces the effect of chromatic aberration, a form of optical noise, and dramatically increases image sharpness.
    • Internal Focusing (IF): Tamron's Internal Focusing System enhances lens maneuverability and reduces the Minimum Focus Distance (M.F.D.) throughout its entire focal length.
    • Extra Refractive Glass (XR): Through the innovative use of XR (Extra Refractive Index) glass, the overall size (diameter and barrel length) of the lens was reduced, while maintaining the same aperture values as previous lenses.

Lens Hood: A bayonet-type lens hood is provided with the lens. The lens hood prevents stray light from entering the lens, which can be harmful to the picture. When not in use, the lens hood can be inverted and stored on the lens. The lens hood adds approximately 1-5/8" length to the lens.

Note: Using the camera's built-in flash with the lens hood in place can cause shadows to appear on the image.

Focus Modes: The lens features a built-in Auto-Focus motor. The lens can be used in either Automatic or Manual Focus modes. When you switch the camera to manual focus, you can focus on your subject by rotating the focus ring on the lens.

Manual Zoom: You can manually zoom in or out by rotating the zooming ring of the lens while viewing your subject through the camera's viewfinder and compose your image at the chosen focal length.

Zoom Lock: The lens has a switch mechanism that prevents the lens from extending toward long focal length by its own weight while hanging from your shoulders. The lock must be activated at the 28mm position.

    Good choice for the price

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking for an all-in-one lens to replace my current Nikon D50 kit lens (18-55mm) and my 70-300mm zoom lens. I get tire of carrying them both around and swapping out during busy sports events. I opted for the Tamron 28-300mm because it was highly rated for the money on Google searches. I must say that I agree. The vibration control is nice, because it has given me some additional time for steady shots as the sun goes down. However, it basically becomes useless when zooming over 200mm and reduced lighting. Also, I must say that I can tell the difference beetween my 18mm wide angle and the 28mm. It's just enough loss in the field of view to notice. So, I'm finding that I am swapping my 18mm back on for the Tamron when I really need a wide angle field of view. In hindsite, I think I would have been better off sacrificing the extra 100mm of zoom and gone with the 18-200mm Tamron. The best part about this lens is it gives you a 300mm zoom lens in about a 5 inch total length. That is awesome, because it falls under the 6 inch max. lens length that most sporting and concert events impose on still camera access. (Assuming that the lighting is halfway decent so that the 300mm zoom doesn't come out blurred!) Overall, I am giving this lens a 4 out 5 because it provides a nice balance of quality for the money. Not bad compared to the Nikon equivalent at about $200 more.
