Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Our take on the Pioneer SPH-DA02 AppRadio

by Ken Nail

Control iPhone® apps from your receiver

If you love using apps on your smartphone, put them to work in your car. Pioneer's SPH-DA02 AppRadio smartphone receiver puts them front and center on a bright and clear 6.1" capacitive touchscreen. With your iPhone 4/4S, you won't have to fumble around with your phone while you're driving — just reach out and touch the screen. It recognizes zoom, swipe, and pinch gestures just as if you were using your smartphone.

Pioneer SPH-DA02

An ever-expanding pool of apps

AppRadio works with many popular music apps, like AUPEO! Personal Radio, Pandora® Internet radio, DashCommand, Rdio, and Pioneer's MIXTRAX. And over time, you can bet that more and more apps will be available to use with the sleek app interface. Pioneer includes a GPS antenna, so you can use the MotionX GPS Drive™ and INRIX® traffic apps to add navigation to this receiver's arsenal of features.

Talk hands-free and enjoy Pioneer sound quality

Built-in Bluetooth® adds to the versatility of this cool receiver — pair your phone and you'll be able to talk hands-free, and have access to your phone book from the touchscreen, too. And this full-featured receiver includes Pioneer's powerful MOSFET built-in amp, a 3-band equalizer, AM/FM tuner, and a set of preamp outputs for connecting an outboard amp or powered sub.

Want to keep your steering wheel controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Pioneer stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Pioneer, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

Note: This receiver is not compatible with the iPhone 5. If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

Complement your setup with a phone mount

This receiver requires input from your iPhone from time to time during operation — most notably when running the MotionX GPS Drive app. It's a good idea to mount your iPhone where it's easy to reach. Check out our selection of Pro.Fit mounts.

This smartphone receiver will not play CDs. If you want to play CDs in your vehicle, we offer a wide selection of CD receivers.

      System Overview

The Pioneer AppRadio: The Pioneer AppRadio (SPH-DA02) is an innovative car audio system with a 6.1" capacitive touchscreen display that when used along with the unit's Advanced App Mode, facilitates the use of your connected iPhone 4/4S's applications from Pioneer and other providers in the vehicle. In addition to the basic functions, such as AM/FM radio and Bluetooth hands-free phoning, when an iPhone 4/4S is connected you'll have full access to your music, photos, videos, calendars, and select iTunes apps.

Apple iPhone 4/4S Compatible: The Pioneer AppRadio is designed specifically for the Apple iPhone 4 (iOS 4.2 or later) / 4S (iOS 5.0 or later) and offers audio playback functions for other select iPod/iPhone models. You cannot connect other USB devices, digital audio players, or smartphones. This unit does not contain a CD player, nor does it have CD-changer port.

AppRadio App (Ver. 1.2.1): The Pioneer AppRadio (SPH-DA02) requires that you download the latest AppRadio app (version 1.2.1) from the iTunes app store onto your iPhone 4 or iPhone 4.

      Display Features

2-DIN Chassis: The Pioneer AppRadio (SPH-DA02) has a 2-DIN chassis (also known as "Double DIN" or size DD), and will fit in many vehicles with a large dash opening. The unit can be ISO-mounted using factory brackets. As always, please consult the Crutchfield Car Selector to verify fit with your vehicle.

Note: This receiver does not include a mounting sleeve. This is not an issue for most vehicles, however, there are some vehicles that require the use of a mounting sleeve when installing a 2-DIN receiver. No accessory mounting sleeve is available for this receiver.

6.1" Capacitive Touchscreen Display: The front of the unit features a clean and simple aesthetic look with only three physical buttons (a home button, a volume up button and a volume down button) combined with a high-resolution WVGA (800 x 480) 6.1" capacitive touchscreen display. This capacitive touchscreen requires less pressure, responds faster, and can recognize multiple touch points simultaneously; all advantages when compared to traditional resistive touchscreen displays. Touchscreen control is used for all functions including the app interface, iPod control/playback, AM/FM radio, and Bluetooth hands-free calling features.

Note: All of the AppRadio's controls have been designed specifically for in-vehicle operation to promote a safe driving experience.

Multi-Language Text: The Pioneer AppRadio offers 20 display languages - including English, French, and Spanish.

Display Adjustments: You can adjust the touchscreen display's Dimmer (on/off), Brightness (1-5), and Black Level (1-5).

Demonstration Images: If you do not operate the unit for 30 seconds, demonstration images are displayed. You can turn this function Off.

Screen Off: You can set the time (Off, 10 sec, or 20 sec.) when the screen is blacked out.

Quick Start Mode: The AppRadio features a Quick Start Mode that puts the AppRadio into a reduced power mode for five minutes when the vehicle ignition is switched to Off. While in Quick Start Mode, if you turn the ignition switch On, the AppRadio will immediately start up. If the unit is in Quick Start Mode and the ignition is not switched to On within five minutes, the AppRadio automatically turns itself off.

Note: The unit has a boot-up time of approximately 30 seconds when the unit is powered up (from the Off position). Once the unit is booted-up, you must then launch your iPhone 4/4S's AppRadio app (which takes approximately another 10 seconds).

Parking Brake Interlock: This unit has a parking brake interlock system that prohibits viewing of video programming and operating certain controls when the vehicle is in motion. In order to watch video on the in-dash monitor, the vehicle must be parked with the parking brake engaged.

Rear View Camera: The Pioneer AppRadio (SPH-DA02) is equipped with a composite video Rear View Camera input. The unit features a function that automatically switches to the rear camera image (Rear View Camera In jack) when an optional rear camera (130NDBC4, sold separately) is installed on your vehicle. When your vehicle's shift lever is in the reverse position, the screen automatically switches to the rear view camera (the pink wire in the supplied harness must be connected to the vehicle's reverse lamp circuit for automatic video switching). You can switch between a Normal or Mirror image.

Installation Angle: For optimum playback performance, the unit should be installed at an angle of less than 60-degrees.

      App Control

Advanced App Mode: When connected to an iPhone 4/4S (using the supplied iPod AV cable) with the Pioneer AppRadio application and compatible third-party apps, the full potential of the AppRadio can be experienced. The Pioneer AppRadio application (version 1.2.1) enables access to the data and connectivity of the iPhone 4/4S. AppRadio allows you to access your iPhone 4's compatible apps, Calendar, and Contacts directly from the Pioneer AppRadio's 6.1" touchscreen. Compatible iPhone 4/4S apps are optimized for use on the AppRadio's 6.1" capacitive touchscreen and all touch, swipe, pinch, and zoom gestures are recognized as if you were directly interacting with your iPhone 4/4S.

Note: To access compatible apps you must have an Apple iPhone 4 (iOS 4.2 or later) / 4S (iOS 5.0 or later) with the latest version of the AppRadio application (ver.1.2.1) from the Apple's iTunes App Store. Your iPhone will need an active Data Plan account with connection to the Internet via 3G, EDGE, or WiFi.

Compatible Apps: Pioneer has initially partnered with several app providers to integrate AppRadio compatibility into a few of today's most popular apps, formatted specifically for safe use and access in the vehicle. AppRadio compatible apps are now available, including the following - AUPEO!, DashCommand, INRIX, MotionX-GPS Drive, Rdio, StreamS HiFi, and Pandora Radio (as of 5/1/2012).

Note: You can initially select the app you want from the AppRadio screen, or you can launch the AppRadio app successfully by pressing the HOME hardkey while on a 3rd party app (AppRadio app ver. 1.2.1 only). Once you have selected an app, you will continue control of the selected app via the AppRadio's touchscreen controls or the iPhone 4/4S touchscreen (based on app protocol).

MotionX-GPS Drive Navigation Ready: MotionX-GPS Drive is a complete GPS navigation solution, designed and optimized for the iPhone 4 (iOS 4.2 or later) / 4S (iOS 5.0 or later) , that can be displayed on the Pioneer AppRadio. MotionX-GPS Drive Offers full support for the iPhone 4/4S with multitasking, routing, and live voice guidance instructions continuing in the background; while you listen to streaming music from your car audio system or use other applications from the iPhone 4/4S. After finding the number you want to call in the phone book, you can select the entry and make the call. Phone numbers are listed alphabetically by Contact Name.
      • Call Log: The most recent calls dialed, received, and missed are stored in memory (up to 100 for each call log). You can browse them and call numbers from these lists.

External Microphone: During your wireless phone call, you can talk into the unit's included microphone, and listen to the other party through the vehicle's speaker system. The external microphone provides better performance in noisy environments than an integrated microphone found on the front-panel of many other in-dash headunits. The microphone features a 13' cord that plugs into the back of the radio, and comes with an adjustable visor-mount clip.

Note: This unit is not equipped with an integrated front-panel mic.

      Audio Section

MOSFET50 Internal Amplifier: The AppRadio is equipped with a 50 watts x 4 (peak) MOSFET amplifier for low distortion, high power output. The amplifier is strong enough to power small subwoofers to moderate volume levels in compact cars and pickups. For higher volume levels from subwoofers, an optional amplifier may be connected to the preamp outputs.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the Pioneer AppRadio are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs are as follows:

      • CEA2006 Specs: 14 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
      • Continuous Power Output: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 50Hz-15kHz, 5% THD)
      • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (or 50 watts x 2 channels at 4 ohms + 70 watts x 1 channel at 2 ohms for subwoofer)

EEQ (Easy EQ): There are seven stored equalizer curves which you can easily recall at any time. You can choose from - Powerful, Natural, Vocal, Super Bass, Flat, Custom 1, or Custom 2.

3-Band Parametric EQ: The Pioneer AppRadio (SPH-DA02) employs a 3-Band Parametric EQ to customize the sound.

      Band Frequency Q-factor Gain
      Bass 60, 80, 100, or 200 Hz 1.0, 1.25, 1.5, or 2.0 -15 to +15 dB
      Midrange 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, or 2.5 kHz 0.5, 0.75, 1.0, or 1.25 -15 to +15 dB
      Treble 10, 12.5, 15, 17.5 kHz Fixed -15 to +15 dB

2.0-Volt Preamp Output: The Pioneer AppRadio features one pair of 2.0-volt preamp outputs. The unit's preamp output can be configured as a fading rear-channel output or a non-fading subwoofer output with a low-pass filter and output level control.

Subwoofer Control: When configured as the subwoofer output, you can select the frequency of the 18dB/octave low pass filter (80, 120, or 160 Hz) and the subwoofer gain (+/-12dB).

Source Level Adjustment (SLA): This function lets you adjust the volume level of each source (iPhone, Hands-Free, Radio) to prevent radical changes in volume when switching between sources. Each source can be independently adjusted from -6 dB to +6 dB.

Switchable Rear Channel/Subwoofer Speaker Output: The rear speaker outputs can be set to provide full range output with full fading capability, or they can be set to provide non-fading subwoofer (low-pass) output. When the rear speaker outputs are set to subwoofer mode, the rear preamp outputs also switch from full range to subwoofer outputs. When set for subwoofer operation, you can connect the rear speaker leads directly to two small 4-ohm passive subwoofers or a dual voice coil sub with 4-ohm voice coils. If you prefer to use a single 2-ohm subwoofer, you can connect the woofer to one set of speaker leads, leaving the other set of rear leads disconnected. The maximum output provided when a 2-ohm load is connected to one set of leads is 70 watts.

      Radio Functions

AM/FM Tuner: The Pioneer AppRadio (SPH-DA02) features a built-in AM/FM tuner with RDS text information display.

RDS: The Radio Data System (RDS) feature displays radio broadcast information such as artist, title, and album when listening to compatible AM/FM stations.

BSM (Best Stations Memory): BSM lets you automatically store the six strongest stations under presets 1-6 of the currently tuned band. The AM/FM tuner has 3 FM banks and 2 AM banks. You can store 6 presets for each bank giving you a total of 18 FM presets and 12 AM presets.

Direct Tuning: You can enter an AM/FM frequency directly, using the unit's on-screen keypad (0-9).

Local Tuning: Local seek tuning lets you tune in only those radio stations with sufficiently strong signals for good reception.

      Steering Wheel Remote Control

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input on the rear of the unit that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately). Please consult the Crutchfield Car Selector to see if your vehicle is compatible.

Great Touch-screen Receiver for the Price

Written By Wrangler1868, Dallas, TX on Monday, June 17, 2013

This in dash double din radio is unbeatable for the price. It has a very clean look, both while on and off. It doesn't attract much attention with shiny buttons while off, which probably helps trick thieves into thinking it's a stock radio. The App Radio has a lot of cool features and apps. Sound quality is great / easy to adjust. Screen resolution is fairly good. Better than more expensive units. The backup camera works great. Ipod functions are very easy to control.
      Pros:
Looks awesome. Easy to use. Inexpensive. Good resolution. Good sound quality. Relatively quick processor.
      Cons:
Slow to startup. Cannot get rid of button "beep" sound. App Radio apps are a bit glitchy. A bit limited selection for frequency range in mid to low speakers.

      AppRadio SPH-DA02

I bought this radio about 2 weeks ago. I wanted something to control my Pandora as well as Bluetooth. This radio is pretty awesome. I read a lot of negative reviews on this radio, but I am here to tell you, DO YOUR HOMEWORK!!! I did a lot of research with this particular radio and the iPhone 4S (which I have). If you read the instruction book, install the radio correctly and understand that ALL electronics have bugs, you will love this radio. The only issue I had was understanding that the radio will not play once you are in app mode. Videos show fine. All of the apps offered by Pioneer are not needed. I only have Pandora, iHeart, NavFree, Car Media player (which is the best) and MotionX.
      Pros:
Easy to use, once you learn how it works.
      Cons:
Does not support music through Bluetooth.

Very well built and extremely simple to install. Gives my interior a modern touch that I love, not to mention the boost in sound quality! The integration with iPhone is flawless and being able to use pandora and GPS apps through the head unit is incredibly satisfying
      Pros:
Sleek, excellent quality, simple to navigate through menus, no bugs
      Cons:
Limited support for apps, although new apps are added regularly. I do wish there were more supported apps but the ones chosen are very helpful

This is a very stylish and easy to use unit. Although there are a few newer models out today, it still looks and feels like a new product. The touch screen is capacitive and is very easy to manipulate. The radio feature is what you would expect, but there are a few cool additions. I like how you can type in any station you want. The ipod feature works very well and now i don't have to hook up my phone using a cassette adapter! I do not use apps really but the gps and pandora work great. Finally the bluetooth stores your contacts and lets you talk hands free with the included microphone. You can even dial a number directly from the unit. I knew nothing about car stereos or wiring and was able to install everything just fine.
      Pros:
Sound quality Build quality Style Touch screen Radio iPod cable that also charges your device Apps! Bluetooth/phone cohesiveness
      Cons:
I'm pretty sure that you can't play music through Bluetooth... But I may be wrong...

I am enjoying the DA02. I was told by tech Supp that it was a iPhone 4S only model. That was fine by me as I don't have plans to upgrade soon and the radio was on a great sale. I additionally had a coupon so the head unit was more than reasonable. The App menus are a bit quirky. It seems lawyers got hold of the software before it went out. There has to have two pulls of the parking brake to get apps to work and since app are where the GPS resides it doesn't make much sense. reading the forums, there are some complicated workarounds. Other than that its cool.
      Pros:
Iphone, GPS and music in the car including SIRI!
      Cons:
      Parking brake on for apps.

I was looking for an upgrade for my work truck. I spend 40 plus hours a week in my truck, and much of this time is responding to text, emails and calls. This app radio is so very helpful for me for daily work. Beyond this I love the sounds, love the look and the touch screen. Very happy with the purchase.
      Pros:
      Easy install, easy to navigate.
      Cons:
Limited to only I phone 4 and 4S, and ipod 4

I couldn't believe the value. If you have moved beyond using CD's, this is perfect for the digital media user.
      Pros:
Nice resolution, beautiful looking head unit, not hard to navigate and use.
      Cons:
Not very versatile. It delivers a basic use unit that is limited to digital media. You must be a bit technically savvy in order to bring out some "coolness" features.

I bought this based on the price... this price with all the installation stuff included was great. I added a backup camera and set up my wife's F150 pretty sweet. Yes, it is a bummer that it only works with iPhone 4 and 4s. But that is what she has for now. I figured, just for the backup screen alone it was worth the price. And even if she gets an iPhone 5, she can still listen to music on it. I just wished that it had Audio Streaming.
      Pros:
Nice looking, pretty easy to install.

      Awful Interface

Written By Charles K, New York, NY on Friday, May 17, 2013
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

What's the point of a touch screen that controls your phone if you constantly have to touch your phone to use this unit. There are too few buttons on this unit first of all. In order to make a phone call you need to navigate the menus instead of simply having a phone/voice control dedicated button. The biggest issue here is that when you choose the Apps Icon on the head unit, this automatically launches the App on the iPhone. Every time it launches you need to tap "Allow" on the iPhone. This means that if you switch to radio or iPod, you need to tap "Allow" on the iPhone when you switch back to Apps. This can somewhat be disabled requiring the "Allow" to be tapped on the first launch, but there is another big problem. When you play Pandora, the Pandora app takes over and there is no way to switch to another app unless you quit the app from the iPhone. Essentially you'll need to mount your iPhone next to this head unit since you'll be touching it constantly, which makes the entire touch screen somewhat irrelevant. There was a firmware update which I did run, but the problems still existed, prompting it to be returned for a basic head unit with a dedicated phone button and Pandora. I will mount the phone on the dash next to it and simply use the iPhone's navigation. Solved... Nice try Pioneer, but obviously your software engineers are not using this product in every day use. BTW I was using an iPhone 4S for this review.
      Pros:
      Nice Looking Decent Sound Quality
      Cons:
Functionality Lack of dedicated buttons Buggy software compatibility

It's ok, the reason I gave it a low score is because all it is is a iphone in your dash. No DVD, the microSD is only for firmware updates, no video in or outs, start up is very slow. I do not recommend this unit if you wana use it for anything other the iphone apps, and there are not very many good apps, or apps at all.

If you are feel gutsy go ahead and install this kit. I have no prior experience what so ever installing audio equipment. I have a 2010 Civic. Installation was do-able but took me a good amount of time. I had to hop on the computer every so often. With my civic, I matched the supplied harness connections to the Pioneer unit (I did this while watching some tv). BUY POSI CONNECTORS!!! item 669PP500

Tips on installing The supplied antenna harness, the BLUE WIRE Is for a power antenna (aka rear windshield) make sure you connect this to the supplied BLUE wire harness.

Also the Brake Switch is on the E-Brake underneath the center console.

With an Itouch 4 generation I am able to access My Music, I downloaded NAVFREE, and am able to navigate (WITH NO DATA CONNECTION) using the supplied GPS antenna,

THIS UNIT COST LESS THAN MY ITOUCH! BUY IT BEFORE IT GOES!
      Cons:
Can't Bluetooth any other phone besides iphone 4 and 4s Cannot use MP3 port

Well first of all i did my review and rattings for weeks before buying my next truck radio. And i found the app radio from pioneer ive always loved pioneer. This stereo has it all for iphone users and android as well. So much to do with it its like your portable tablet or ipad.. The sound is better than o thought i run it on a 10" kicker cvr and a 600 watt crunch amp with 2 6.5 pioneer speaker and two 6.5 alpine's and boy does the sound explode in my system who knew the small system i have could be so awesome. The gps is perfect and safe to use the web browsing is awesome as well movies youtube facebook woah i could go on and on oh yeah! And the bluetooth is the best as well. Well foremost if you have space for a double deck stereo in your vehicle and love long or short drives this stereo rocks in so many ways i cant explain. A litle slow to activate when it turns on but its the begigning of smart car stereo's and with updates you can expect many more great options to make your drive pleasent or awesome and safe as well. So i give this stereo 5 stars and beyond.. I recomend this stereo to anybody . Thanks crutchfield for the great price and thanks pioneer for the great stereo..

I love the app radio! The sound is great and the installation was simple!
      Pros:
Touch screen works great it integrates with my iPhone 4 and looks amazing in my truck a 2002 F250! Pandora and iheart radio are awesome and integrate flawlessly.
      Cons:
Will not work with any app that isn't app radio compatible. Does not duplicate iPhone screen. Has way to many annoying warning screens.
