Why install component speakers?

A component speaker system gives you the best possible performance from your car audio system. A system consists of separate woofers, tweeters, and crossovers, each designed to cover one specific range of frequencies. As separate components, the woofer can move freely to deliver more powerful performance, while the tweeter can be custom-mounted in a better spot up closer to your ears, revealing a whole new world of detail. Separate crossovers are far superior to the simple filters wired into full-range speakers, so the components work together for smoother, more focused sound.

Our take on the Kicker DS6.2

by Jo Greene

You love listening to epic, soul-shaking tunes in your ride, but your factory speakers make every song sound like a 60's garage band. Replace those worn-out speakers with some Kicker DS Series models, and get the performance and reliability you deserve.

The DS6.2 component system features heavy-duty 6-1/2" polypropylene woofers, supported by heavy-duty polyester foam surrounds, that'll bring out the power and impact of your tunes.

Titanium 3/4" dome tweeters broadcast bright, sweet vocal and instrumental details, giving your music energy and ambiance. External crossovers send the high frequencies to the tweeters and lower frequencies to the woofers, so your music's in the proper harmonic balance. Hook these components up to an amp, and you'll hear new power and impact from your favorite tunes.

Highlights:

  • component speaker system includes 2 woofers, 2 tweeters, and 2 crossovers
  • 6-1/2" polypropylene woofers with polyester foam surrounds
  • 3/4" titanium dome tweeters
  • 2-way external crossover network (12 dB/octave, 4,000 Hz high- and low-pass)

    Features

Polypropylene Woofer Cones: The Kicker DS-series speakers feature durable polypropylene woofer cones for power and control. Polypropylene woofers are also resistant to moisture and high temperature extremes found in automotive applications.

Ribbed Polyester Foam Surrounds: The ribbed polyester foam surrounds allow extended cone excursion for additional bass output and higher SPL.

Tweeter Mounting Options: The tweeters come with brackets to allow multiple mounting configurations; flush-mounted, angle-mounted, and surface-mounted (also at an angle):

      Flush Angle Surface
    Mounting Height 0.216" 0.610" 1.165"
Mounting Depth 0.593" 0.5" screw depth
    Frame Diameter 1.985" 1.985" N/A
    Cutout Diameter 1.570" 1.570" N/A
    Frame Width N/A N/A 1.735"
    Frame Depth N/A N/A 1.892"

Crossovers: The component system includes passive 2-way crossover networks for a seamless transition between the woofers and tweeters. The slope is 12dB per octave (both high pass and low pass) and the crossover point is 4000 Hz. A switch on the side of each crossover allows you to adjust the tweeter output, 0 dB, +3 dB, or +6 dB. The crossovers' dimensions are:

    • Length: 4.794"
    • Width: 2.508"
    • Height: 1.312"

Not very impressed with these at all. They don't offer much bass and are far from the clearest speakers I've had in ride.
    Pros:
    -Nice tweeters

-not much better quality than stock -bass sucks

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Good performance for the price. One of my tweeters showed up broken but I didn't have a place for them in the rear anyway so it worked out.
    Pros:
Good fitment, clear sound, significant upgrade over OEM
    Cons:
Must be combined with a sub for full range of sound. Seemed to struggle when pushing any more than minimal bass.

Great sounding speakers for the price
    Pros:
    Fairly easy install
    Cons:
Tweeters are just a bit tinny in comparison to the high priced components with silk dome tweeters but for the price i have no complaints at all!

These components are a great value. Efficient sound, clear crisp highs and solid mid-range. Definitely worth the small price jump from co-axial speakers.

Upgraded 2006 Subaru Impreza WRX STI from Stock

Written By Andrew K, Annapolis, MD on Thursday, June 28, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these to upgrade my stock front doors speakers which were lacking everywhere. I had already upgraded the head unit to an Alpine 9887 several years ago and the stock speakers were pushed to their limits. Several reviews I've read on putting these or a similar sized component system said the tweeters wouldn't fit in the stock locations. Well they definitely do - I was able to install these in the stock locations and even retain the OEM speaker grill's for a complete from the factory look. The woofer's were able to fit in the stock location. I just had to cut some of the plastic and do some heavy modification to the crutchfield included speaker adapters (see my review for them). The tweeter's, I was able to take off the stock one, bend the bracket and then hot glue the new tweeter right in place. The mounting seems solid and where its not going to go anywhere. The crossover I was able to just hot glue to the backside of the door card. Hot glue is great to work with and easy to change and adjust, I'm just a little worried about what happens when the car gets really hot, but we'll see.

As for the speakers they sound incredible over the stock speakers, have much more clairty and a fair amount of bass. You definitely need some sort of sub setup to go along with these to really get some bass. 60-70% vol and they are just as loud as stock, any more vol and they need a power amp.
    Pros:
-Fits in the stock speaker mounting locations for a complete OEM installed look. -Great upgrade for the price and sound amazing compared to stock. -For the price they are well worth the upgrade.
    Cons:
If you just have a head unit, installing these guys are going to motivate you to add at least a subwoofer setup and probably a power amplifier down the road.

    Great Upgrade

Written By Mark C., Phoenix, AZ on Tuesday, June 12, 2012
Installed in a 2012 Hyundai Accent
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installation in 2012 Hyundai Accent was easy with the exception of finding a place to get the external crossovers installed out of site. I managed to mount them inside the door, out of the way, and set the selector switch on +3 db (the middle position). The only way to change the switch is to remove the door panel now. However, they sound really good and are far better than the cheesy paper cone speakers in my doors and the cheap, small tweets in the upper door post area.

The only problem is the Kicker instructions were very hazy about polarity on their diagram, but I was able to figure out that the wire w/ the black stripe was the negative lead.

Crutchfield included everything I needed for a great install, but I had to add some fasteners, and do some soldering for a great install. I like these speakers so well I just ordered a pair of two-ways to replace the rear door speakers.

My next purchase is a new head unit, and I will definitely buy it from Crutchfield.
    Pros:
Great sound for the money Installation was fairly easy
    Cons:
Lack of good instructions (not Crutchfield's fault) External crossover was a pain to get out of the way

Put them in the front doors of my 2005 volvo S60 - big improvement in clarity, they handle the mid range bass much better and the tweeters are much louder and cleaner. They work well with sound ordance 8" sub in trunk. Both good upgrades for the cost.

Not bad for the price for my 09 Tacoma

Written By udelslayer, NC on Wednesday, February 01, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Ok for entry level and the pre-wired crossover is a nice feature. Great for the h/u amp and make sure you're using a subwoofer. It compliments the Basslink pretty well. Its VERY important that you use a HPF and not push bass through these or they sound "meh." Can be a little harsh at high volumes, but that may be due to the overall door design and small amount of dynamat used. I would strongly consider wooden or thick abs brackets instead of the cheaper plastic ones (that get you by for now).
    Pros:
Loud and mostly distortion free. At the level where distortion happens, it hurts your ears anyway.
    Cons:
None, really. Not bass friendly, but thats expected with mid-range speakers.

    Kicker DS6.2

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a '02 GMC 2500HD crew cab with factory radio and all 4 door speakers were bad. I bought 2 sets of these a couple of months ago and put them in. Crutchfield did an excellent job of sending all the little extras needed to make this job go a whole lot smoother. They sent free mounting brackets (cutting install time in half) with speaker wiring adapters. I set the db switch on the crossovers to 0 for the tweeters. The rear doors on the crewcab takes a 2-way speaker, not a component set. No big deal, all I had to do was drill a hole for the tweeter next to the woofer (with hole saw). Initial sound was good, after playing with bass/tweeter adjustments on the radio. After a couple of months now, they jam. It seems that the bass has gotten a little deeper/richer over time. There are some mid bass tunes that are not clear and make a blurred sound (I blame it on the factory radio). I would recomend this for a factory replacement like mine. Overall, I am happy with my purchase. Thank you Crutchfield.
    Pros:
    Fair price, tweeter mounting options.
    Cons:
Mounting screws and clips were cheap. Had to find spare mounting screws/clips around the shop to work, the ones that Kicker sends kept stripping.

    Installed in a 1995 Chevrolet C Series
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers sound great and fit right into my 95 Chevy C1500 with the provided speaker adapters. The tweeters even fit into the factory tweeter location with only very minor work with a Dremel tool required to enlarge the factory hole. The install is very slick and subtle. The only thing negative about the speakers I can think of is the crossover modules are kind of on the large side, which might be a problem for some cars. They fit just fine inside the bottom of the door for me. Don't expect a ton of bass either, as they are only 61/2's after all. They do sound good with very nice crisp highs and good mid- bass.

Installed in a 2003 Mitsubishi Outlander
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers are great, especially for the price! My first install ever were these DS6.2s and the DS60s about a few months ago. These went in the front doors and the DS60s went in the rear doors of my 2003 Mitsubishi Outlander. Abolutely amazing sound on the stock head unit (the Outlander was the XLS edition with the Infinity system), and it just got better paired with the Pioneer AVH P3300 BT.

Not only do these speakers have awesome quality on the highs and mids, but the lows make my doors shake and the rear view mirror blurs. The speakers appear to do their job and then that much more, very good buy.

Installed in a 2004 Nissan Sentra
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Hooked these up to a low end kenwood stereo, very nice sound, only problem is half my ipod is going in the trash, I can now hear how much sound was compressed out when converted to mp3 or just cheap web rips. I set crossover to 3db, and lowered the treble on the head unit to even out the sound. So rear speakers are bass heavy now, the way i planned it. Very nice low end bass, just short of a sub woofer.

Installation took a while, about 3 hours, had to go buy some bolts cause my stock ones were missing. Also had to drill a couple holes in the bracket to make it fit. long mounting nut for the tweeter was the hardest thing to put on, it was hard to screw on, and it was too long, unless the plastic on your door is about 1/2 in. thick. I mounted them at an angle, would have saved an hour if i mounted them straight with the short mounting nut.

Sounds 500% better than the 200w no name brand speakers I, "got a deal on" when I bought my stereo.

Installed in a 2010 Honda Ridgeline
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm happy with this component set. The db level on the tweeters is adjustable to 3 levels. For those that worry about harsh titanium, I was happy with the middle db setting on the x-over. Sounded fine and not harsh. Came with all I needed in a DIY kit. That the main reason to buy DIY from crutchfield in my opinion. The install sheet was excellent info. This was a shallow depth kit that came up for Honda cars and went into my ridgeline. Take your time thinking things out and when you drill for tweeters be sure to match things up and work on left and right at the same time to achieve symmetry. Huge improvement over factory mainly due to tweeter placement.
