What's a component sub and why would I want one?

A component sub is simply a speaker that's designed to reproduce bass once it's installed in a compatible enclosure. Think about the impact of a movie soundtrack in a big theater or even in your own home HDTV setup. A component sub can add the same kind of power to the music in your car. And a car sub is not all about the boom that you hear on a street corner (although that's cool too) - you can pair a component sub with your choice of enclosure to get bass just the way you like it, from tight and punchy to fat and loose. And once you experience music in your car with a well-tuned subwoofer, you'll never go back.

Our take on the Infinity 1060w

by Dominic Devito

An Infinity Reference subwoofer makes every deep note of your music count. Whether you listen to jazz, rock, hip-hop, country, or all of the above, you'll hear and feel satisfying bass with this sub in your car.

The Reference 1060w 10" sub offers a classy, no-nonsense look, with a high-gloss polypropylene cone that's accurate and hard-hitting. The durable large-roll rubber surround provides smooth, extended excursion with reduced distortion so you get impressive bass performance.

The 1060w's unique motor structure cuts down on the mounting depth, and this sub works in sealed, ported, and bandpass enclosures so you get bass the way you want it. And since you want your investment to last, the 1060w features plenty of internal cooling to protect the sub's inner workings and keep it performing at its peak.

Highlights:

  • 10" 4-ohm subwoofer
  • polypropylene woofer cone with large-roll rubber surround

Enclosure Compatibility

Features

High-efficiency Polypropylene Woofer Cone: This lightweight and popular material is used to ensure maximum woofer efficiency. The benefit is high output with modest amplifier power.

Large-roll Rubber Surround: The large-roll rubber surround provides optimum cone-edge suspension and absorbs distortion that may travel up the cone edge, ensuring clean, tight bass.

Proprietary Basket: The unique in-board motor structure reduces the overall mounting depth, without limiting enclosure options.

Vented Polepiece: The vented polepiece provides additional cooling of the motor structure, thus increasing power handling.

Progressive Spider: The subwoofer uses a progressive spider, which provides better control at excursion limits than more commonly used linear spiders. The result is reduced distortion at high output levels.

Enclosure Compatibility

Sealed Box Volume: Infinity recommends a sealed enclosure with an internal volume of 0.75 cu/ft. Sealed enclosures provide the most control over a woofer, will handle more power, and provide more accurate sonic reproduction, making them suitable to all types of music.

Ported Box Volume: Infinity recommends a ported enclosure with an internal volume of 1.75 cu/ft with one 3" diameter x 4.75" long port. Ported (or vented) enclosures provide better efficiency in the 40-50Hz range, and are suitable for use with small amplifiers, giving you more bass output from less power. However, this efficiency comes at the expense of sound quality at low frequencies (40Hz and below), and control.

Bandpass Box Volume: Infinity recommends a bandpass enclosure with an internal volume of 2.0 cu/ft. The enclosure has a sealed chamber volume of 1.0 cu/ft and a ported chamber volume of 1.0 cu/ft with one 4" diameter x 7.875" long port. Bandpass enclosures often provide the most output available from any amplifier and subwoofer combination at the expense of sonic accuracy. If sheer SPL is desired most, a bandpass enclosure is recommended.

Great subwoofer, awesome low end!

Written By Kirk, Wilkes-Barre, Pa on Saturday, October 06, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this for my hot rod Monte Carlo as my old Rockford Fosgate subwoofer had begun to disintegrate, and I am thrilled that I chose the Infinity! The sound quality blows the Rockford out of the water and the bottom end is incredible. I am a rock/metal fan, and this sub doesn't flutter or pop at all...just tight, clean bass!
Pros:
Price, quality, sound fit & function.
Cons:
None to date.

Monte Carlo's For Days

Written By Monte Carlo94, Middlefield MA on Tuesday, September 04, 2012

This sub is awesome. They're cheap, sound great, and most people dont even think they are only tens. I'm running the two of them off of a 500w mono kicker amp and its perfect. This is what all Monte Carlos' need.
Pros:
Everything they dont heat up they dont distort they dont have any problems at all
Cons:
Nothing

Infinity 1060w

Written By CM15, Lynnwood on Wednesday, February 15, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I did not have good luck with this sub. The inner cone tore from the rubber surround after about 2 months. I have had great experience with Infinity speakers in the past, maybe I got a product built on a Friday. Crutchfield was a breeze in dealing with the return and help finding a new sub for me. I am a Crutchfield customer for life.
Pros:
Great Looking sub at a good price. Everything Crutchfield sells, they will back it 100% or get you a product you are happy with.
Cons:
Speaker quite working after 2 months.

Great tight bass

Written By RDUBPhoto, Chicago on Thursday, February 24, 2011

I purchased 1 10" for some added depth to my system in an Infiniti G35. I have a pair of JL
audio 6.5" Components in the front with a Clarion VX400 pushing them. The Infinity is being
pushed by a super old school Alpine amp bridged to 300 watts. I have it turned up only half
way and they bass is clear and fills the car. Using a ported box as well.

Great clean sound for the price.

awsome

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have 2-10's in a seal box in 2 of our cars along with Infinity amps.
These hit hard, clear and dont sound muddy. You can feel the bass.
place these in the right box and you wont be sorry. Buying 2 more for our sons car. Other
peaple have heard them as I drove up and thought I had somthing larger than 2-10's. Had
Infinity speakers now for 3 years and no problems.

impressed

Written By ohgee, richmond, va on Saturday, November 13, 2010

these are running off a 500/1...I was actually impressed. The bass is hard
hitting and musical. I've got these i a ported box, they are loud and low...I
couldn't believe the power handling and response from a sq company especially
their low end sub. Maybe not as durable as a p2 or w3 but certainly better
sounding than p1 or w0, also just as musical as a w3. Would definitely
recommend ad the only reason I gave 4 stars is because their not as durable as a
p2 or 3...I listen to allot of hip-hop.

Written By Bryan, New York on Wednesday, June 09, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Thes speakers are great. I am powering them with a Sound Ordinance 500w RMS mono block amp in a sealed box. The combination cranks. Overall great value and great sound. More than enough power.
