Polk Audio

Why install component speakers?

A component speaker system gives you the best possible performance from your car audio system. A system consists of separate woofers, tweeters, and crossovers, each designed to cover one specific range of frequencies. As separate components, the woofer can move freely to deliver more powerful performance, while the tweeter can be custom-mounted in a better spot up closer to your ears, revealing a whole new world of detail. Separate crossovers are far superior to the simple filters wired into full-range speakers, so the components work together for smoother, more focused sound.

Our take on the Polk Audio MM6501

by Buck Pomerantz

Polk Audio continues its tradition of making brilliant-sounding speakers in stylishly designed packages — their Mobile Monitor (MM) Series speakers look great and sound even better. Each speaker utilizes an extra-strong, extra-small neodymium magnet that saves space and weight, allowing these speakers to fit into more places in more vehicles while still delivering a full sound with lots of kick. Their lightweight carbon composite frames provide strong, flex-free support for the speakers' motor assemblies.

The Polk MM6501 6-3/4" component system features 6-3/4" woofers with honeycomb-textured woven glass fiber composite cones that respond very quickly for a clean, crisp, and powerful sound. Large voice coils — over an inch in diameter — give the speaker high power handling capability and extended reliability.

Separate 1" silk dome tweeters add a sweet high end that blends perfectly with the low notes, and swivel mounts let you aim the tweeters to produce a superior sound stage in your car. The external crossovers direct the signal flow so all your music stays in perfect harmonic balance, from the electric bass all the way up to the cymbals. A tweeter attenuation setting allows you to tweak the high-frequency level to your taste.

Important Note: These Polk speakers use a low-impedance design to pull more power safely from your car stereo or amplifier. This design is compatible with virtually all factory and aftermarket stereos.

Note: Polk describes this model as a 6-1/2" speaker. Most manufacturers designate this same frame size as a 6-3/4" speaker. For simplicity's sake we list it as a 6-3/4" speaker.

  • component speaker system includes two 6-3/4" woofers, 2 tweeters, and two external crossovers

    Woofers

Dynamic Balance: Dynamic Balance is a proprietary Polk Audio technology using laser imaging to determine what combination of speaker materials create the least amount of resonance. Eliminating resonance in speakers results in a wide, smooth response and low distortion.

Woofer Cones: Woven glass composite cones feature tremendous stiffness-to-mass ratio. Lower mass means faster transients and finer detail.

Butyl Rubber Surrounds: For a smoother response and improved durability, the woofers use butyl rubber surrounds. The airtight rubber surrounds stand up to moisture, sunlight and extreme temperatures while allowing long excursion linear motion and years of reliable use.

Neodymium Magnets: The woofer's neodymium magnets offer exceptional strength to performance ratio and is extremely lightweight.

Large Diameter Voice Coils: Large diameter, 30mm voice coils increase the woofer's reliability and power handling capacity.

Carbon Composite Basket: The woofer's carbon composite basket is lightweight and will not flex during music audio peaks.

Mounting: The woofer itself has 4 mounting holes for a standard 6-3/4" application. The supplied mounting ring has multiple mounting holes for 6-1/2" and non-standard 6-3/4" applications, allowing the speaker to fit more vehicles.

Grilles: Strong ABS plastic grilles are included. These computer optimized grilles feature a spoke-wheel design.

Marine Certified Woofer: Polk MM Series speakers are built to withstand exposure to moisture and UV rays, so they work well in boats and cars. They also include stainless mounting hardware for corrosion and rust resistance.

    Tweeters

Silk/Polymer Composite Tweeters: The 1" liquid-cooled, silk/polymer composite tweeters provide clear, detailed highs.

Marine Certified Tweeters: Polk db Series speakers are built to withstand exposure to moisture and UV rays, so they work well in boats and cars.

Mounting: The supplied mounting cups allow you to surface- or flush-mount the tweeters. The tweeters swivel in both housings, allowing you to adjust them for optimum imaging.

    Tweeter Mounting Dimensions:

      Surface Mount Flush Mount
    Mounting Height 1.015" 0.405"
    Depth 0.75" (screw depth) 0.875"
    Frame Diameter 2.0" 2.295"
    Cutout Diameter   N/A 1.945"

    Crossovers

2-Way Crossovers: Each outboard crossover features a 12dB/octave high-pass network for the tweeter and a 12dB/octave low-pass network for the woofer.

Tweeter Attenuation Switch: You can adjust the output of the tweeter to match a level appropriate to your vehicle or your system. On the end of crossover (opposite the terminals), the tweeter attenuation switch can be set to 0dB or -3dB.

Electronic Tweeter Protection Circuits: Each crossover has a built-in protection circuit that guards the tweeter against accidental damage from high power.

Crossover Connections: The crossover inputs and outputs are screw terminals. The crossover housing is vented, giving you a choice of hidden wire channels for easier, more professional-looking installs.

Mounting: There are two mounting holes in the base of each crossover.

    Crossover Dimensions: Width = 4.265", Depth = 3.635", Height = 1.175"

    Very Satisfied

Written By Anonymous, Clinton, MD on Thursday, May 31, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall this compenent set is great if the person wants piercing highs and good mid range. If bass is what you want DO NOT BUY THESE unless u have a subwoofer installed like I do.
    Pros:
Tweeters are easy to install in factory location in most cars
    Cons:
woofer could produce lows a little more accurate, this could also be because of the material actually.

Good Sound - Seperate Tweet Wiring Weak

Written By James J, Fresno, CA on Monday, April 02, 2012
Installed in a 2011 Jaguar XK
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Replaced my front Bowers Wilkins speakers with these in my 2011 XK Jaguar. They sounded very tight and lacking a bit of bass comparatively but then again I was looking to add some highs and overall clarity to the system. The existing bass woffer does cover in the low low frequencies but all in all they do sound very clear. I will say, however, that the tweeter and existing wires which are included must be handled with some care. Out of the box and a couple of mounting options explored and the wires came right off their soldering points. Quite annoyed and might just send them back due to this as resoldering does seem a bit delicate as the contacts are very close together. All in all, good speaker. If you are looking for a cheaper option the MM651 are just as good and the DB651 both sound good as well.
    Pros:
    Good volume and clarity
    Cons:
Tweeter wires and solder points are delicate and can detach easily. The crossover box is a bit larger than other versions but does add variability in tweeter DB adjustment.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed these speakers in my 2007 Dodge Ram 2500 mega-cab. Speakers have decent sound but very little base. I have a pioneer NAV unit powering these speakers and no amp but unit alone is capable of overpowering speakers. Will probably be looking for something that can handle more power in the near future.
    Pros:
    Good sound quality
    Cons:
No bass, speakers can't handle minimal power.

Amazingly Clear Sound 2005 Silverado1500 Reg Cab

Written By Arcamedies, Oklahoma on Friday, March 16, 2012
    Installed in a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just recently purchased these speakers to replace the sound in my 05' Chevy Silverado1500 Reg Cab. I've had many speakers in all of the cars I have owned and I knew there was going to be a sizeable difference but I had no idea how crisp and clean these speakers were going to be. I had the component speakers mounted next to the windshield facing the glass and the 6 1/2 in the stock speaker holes in the door. The sound is amazing inside the cab, I only have sound dampening material in the doors for now but I will be adding it to the roof also. These speakers cover the highs and mids extreamly well and the low end bass is not bad at all but being a bass junkie i could use a little more bass from these. But in a month I'll be adding a 10" Polk sub and Amp and I'll have all the bass I want. Buy these speakers! at Crutchfields current price you cant go wrong...
    Pros:
Clean, crisp sound from the component speakers and excellent mids from the 6 1/2's. These speakers will compilment a sub very well with the perfect range of sound!
    Cons:
Wish the 6 1/2's had just a little more low end bass. But hey, thats what subs are for... I'm still very happy with my purchase and the clean sound!

    Buyer Beware!

Written By Erik, Johnson City, TN on Sunday, March 11, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After listening to these in the Charlottesville showroom and doing a good bit of research I bought a pair and would have given them 5 stars once tuned. Three weeks later I bought a second pair. A few months later a crossover went bad, I replaced it with an Infinity crossover while waiting for a warranty replacement and the time to do the work. A couple of months later I started noticing an irritating bass induced buzz from 2 of the other woofers, so last weekend I finally made time to replace the crossover and check the buzz. Three out of 4 woofers had torn surrounds! The only one not messed up is the one with the Infinity crossover. High pass is set a little above 100 at the amps, I don't push a lot of bass, and never exceeded 3/4 gain or 3/4 volume. Running a pair of Boston Acoustic 80 x 2 amps. Also, the replacement crossover broke on install. Crutchfield sent me 1 replacement pair and said I'm out of luck from here on out with these. Just over a year and $500 dollars and I've still got 1 torn woofer surround and I'm sure it's only a matter of time till the other woofers and the crossovers go. Furthermore the tweeter mounts are terrible - they need to use a threaded mount like most quality brands. I'll still shop at Crutchfield, they're generally great to work with, but I might get the Alpines to replace these elsewhere on general principle and I will not buy Polk anything again.
    Pros:
Sound quality when tuned properly and working.
    Cons:
Build quality is consistently poor. Tweeter needs different mount.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am using only the woofers for mid-bass on the rear deck. I am running them off of Alpine Flagship SPX-17MB Type-X crossovers using the mid-bass settings. Perfect for the application and they handle all the power I can give them. They required a small amount of trimming on the fames to fit, however most brands would need the same.
    Pros:
    Very good power handling capability.
    Cons:
Crossovers need to be more flexible.

Rate it a 4 out of the box and a 7.5 after tuning

Written By Derek, HI on Saturday, January 21, 2012
    Installed in a 2006 Nissan 350Z
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these for what I thought was a good deal after my MB Quarts tweeters blew out. I installed the speakers in the stock locations of my 350z, and it is powered by a Pioneer MVH-8200BT head unit and a 100+ watts @ 2.7 ohms amp with 16ga speaker wire to all 4 speakers. After the installation, the speakers sounded terrible, almost unbearable to listen to especially with the higher female voices and beats. There was a severe peak between frequencies 2.5khz and 6khz and also a dip around 500hz and 10khz+. I assume that the frequency dips at 500hz and 10k were due to the speaker locations, but I would have to say that the severe peak around 4khz was caused by a cheap crossover (which is my biggest complaint about this set). The components in the crossover seemed to be held together by a ton of glue, there was no bi-amp capabilities, and it seems like the engineers didnt properly transition between the tweeer & woofer.

After 6+ hours of trying to tune my system with the deck's 7-band EQ, i wasnt able to get it to sound right. So finally, I decided to bi-amp the speakers and use my amp's built-in low-pass crossover to cross over the woofer at 2.2khz @ 24db slope and use the stock crossover for the tweeters (crossover frequency unknown). This workaround solution seemed to eliminate the peak @ 4khz. After all of this tuning, I am satisfied but not completely happy with the sound. I rate it a 7.5 out of 10 (after much tuning).
    Pros:
Good midbass Lively mids and highs 2.7 ohm set-up may be good for those who have 2-channel amp comes with an extension for the tweeter wire
    Cons:
Crossover construction No Bi-amping capabilities Stock sound is terrible Found out that you can't mount the speakers co-axially as the pictures and woofer grill seem to suggest Not worth MSRP

    Low Impedance Speakers

Written By Ro_bert, Sunnyvale, CA on Friday, January 20, 2012

They are 2 Ohm. My headunit cannot drive them, gets instable at high levels, although Crutchfield recommended them for my car. I agree an external amplifier is the better solution (at least until I sell the car), but even then 4 Ohm would have been better - less issues with thin stock cables, and higher amplifier efficiency. The sound is great, no complaints there. They also measure flat.

Amazing Components That Rival Others Costing Much More

Written By Chris, Columbus, OH on Sunday, October 23, 2011

Amazing sound quality. I've went all out with the my system. I am running these components active with an Audison Bit Ten Processor with 100W going to the woofers alone. These are very efficient and have tons of clean midbass. These speakers can be run full range if you need to and will hit sub frequencies with punch. I have mine crossed at 60Hz because I have a sub and are very good at helping to keep the bass upfront. Clean and clear midrange, and tweeters are extremely smooth.
    Pros:
Amazing sound quality for the price, huge upgrade when compared to cheaper db line.
    Cons:
Tweeters sound better crossed at 4kHz, factory crossovers use 3.2kHz.

It took a little bit to install these into my 2010 Mazda 3. But that's not polk audio's fault, that's Mazda. Other than that the speakers sound amazing with my Jensen 5500 amp. The tweeters put out great, even too great with the crossover set at 3 db. The woofers themselves handle bass extremely well (even the lows). They were actually shaking my doors without any break in quality. 5 stars all the way.

Bought 2 sets of these for my 2002 Mustang GT convertible. Here and Polks website says they dont fit but... they did. Just need a adapter ring for front doors to make the 5x7 hole to 6 1/2.

These speakers are the real deal! Tweeters give you all you need but not to :"bright". Midbass is awesome.

    Polk has great sound

Written By Ryan, Harrisburg PA on Thursday, July 07, 2011

I had the polk db's in my 2000 blazer and I got a 97 4runner and had spots for tweeters so I decided to upgrade a bit. These speakers sound great even better than the db's. Polk is my favorite speaker company by far and sound amazing with my 10" polk sr sub, if you have the cash to buy these I would recommend them every time. Make sure if you're spending the cash to get these speakers to power them with an amp to get the best sound out of them.

    Sound fantastic

Written By Stever761, Spicewood, TX on Friday, June 24, 2011

Installed 2 months ago in the front of my 2007 Tundra Double Cab. They were easy to install though I did opt to mount the tweeters in the door sails instead of the dash which required cutting holes in the sail panel plastic. They sound very good. I can crank them up louder than comfortable and they still sound clear with no distortion (Kenwood Excelon DNX 6980 powered by Sound Ordinance 120W amp). The other reviews are true -these are great speakers.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My past experiences with car speakers made me consider component speakers as having separate tweeters at ear level greatly increases the clarity of the highs. While I was concerned with all the extra installation required, it turned out my extra effort paid-off. Boy, these speakers really deliver. They handle my 22 watts head with ease. The only negative I found was that super-low bass frequencies roll-off a bit, but its uncertain whether its the head rolling-off or the speakers.

These speakers are phenomenal. Even with the poor door locations (too close to the floor) in my Subaru, these things sound amazing. I have 125Hz and below filtered out (sub), and these things go louder than my ears can tolerate with zero distortion. Mids sound better than you could hope for with a speaker this size. You can't go wrong with these speakers, just don't run them off your head unit; that would be a huge waste.

I recently replaced my stock stereo in a 1993 Suburban. I opted for these mounted in kick panels. I have a Pioneer 6200BT receiver, Alpine F300 amp (50x4), these, and two Polk MM521's in the rear doors. These speakers sound very nice, exceptionally well with classical and instrumental music. They don't have as much low to mid-range punch as I was hoping for, but I will likely add a small subwoofer to bring up the low end. Installation was relatively easy and the speakers seem to be well made. If you get these at a discounted rate (Outlet), I'd say go for it.
