Our take on the Marantz CD5003

by Loren Barstow

    Features
    Inputs and Outputs Notes

    Features

Disc Compatibility: The Marantz CD5003 Single Disc CD Player can play CD, CD-R, and CD-RW discs.

CD-TEXT: The Marantz CD5003 supports CD-Text information such as artist name and track titles. The CDs used must also support CD-Text for this feature to work.

MP3/WMA Playback: The CD5003 supports MP3 and WMA files that have been recorded onto CD-R or CD-RW discs.

    CS4392 High-Performance D/A Converters: The CD5003 uses a Super-Audio CD grade 192kHz/24-bit Cirrus Logic CS4392 D/A converter to provide exceptional sound quality.

CD Playback Technology: During CD play, the PCM signals recorded on the disc are oversampled to 128fs inside the D/A converter and then processed by a combination of the dynamic element matching (DEM) and multi-element switched capacitors to achieve playback characterized by a high linearity.

HDAM (High Definition Amplifier Module): Marantz uses HDAMs instead of standard op-amps, rendering a more dynamic sound and less susceptibility to radiated noise, heat, and vibration. The unit uses an HDAM-SA2 for high speed and high quality sound.

Aluminum Front Panel: The unit's front-panel combines the structural advantages of extruded aluminum with the resonance absorption characteristics of glass-reinforced resin.

Display On/Off Function:  The CD5003 features a Dot Matrix FL display . The "Display Off" function enables the main unit display to be turned of. By turning off this display, the pulsive noise generated from the display is reduced, thus eliminating its effects on the music signals.

Pitch Control: The "Pitch Control" functions enables the play speed (pitch) to be varied over a +/-12 step. This feature is particularly useful for musical instrument practice sessions. This function is only possible when playing back audio CDs only.

Audio EX Function: The Audio EX mode is provided in order for you to enjoy  high quality sound based on how you have connected the CD5003 to your amplifier. There are three settings - Off (digital signal is only output when the pitch control setting is 0), EX 1 (offers better overall sound), EX 2 (offers best sound from analog outputs).

Quick Replay Function: By a single-action operation, the "Quick Replay" function enables play to be moved back from the current play position to the time equivalent to the setting (range of 5 to 60 seconds) and play to be resumed. This function makes it possible to return to a part of the track that was just played so it can be heard again. This functions is only possible when playing audio CDs.

Gold Plated Outputs: The CD player features gold plated outputs in order to offer the best connection for your system. The terminals are chassis-mounted so they can take the strain of audiophile interconnects.

High Grade Headphone Circuit: The high-grade headphone circuit incorporates a high-speed buffer amplifier to enable headphone listening of high quality sound reproduction.

Wireless Remote Control: In addition the unit's from panel controls, the single CD player comes supplied with a dedicated full-feature IR wireless remote control for easy operation of the CD5003.

20 Track Music Calendar: A linear music calendar appears at the bottom of the display, and lights up with the number of tracks on the currently selected disc, up to 20. An "arrow" icon indicates the presence of 21 or more tracks. After a track has been played, the number for that track disappears from the calendar display. In addition, the tracks selected during Program Play appear in the music calendar display, and disappear after they are played. This Music Calendar is only available when playing back Audio CDs.

Playback Options: The CD5003 provides the following options for disc playback:

    • Audio CDs:
      • Peak Search: This feature allows you to search for the loudest passage on the disc.
      • Direct Search: Directly enter the track number on the remote control to play the desired track.
      • Track Skip: Skip to the next or previous track or the beginning of the current track.
      • Forward/Reverse Search: For searching for a particular part of the current track, you can search forward or backward.
      • Repeat Play: You can repeat playback of one track, the entire disc, or specific portions of a track (A-B repeat).
      • Random Play: You can play all tracks of the disc in random order.
      • Program Play: You can arrange and play tracks on a disc in a specific sequence. Up to 30 tracks can be programmed. As you are selecting tracks, the display will show the number of tracks in the program, and the total playing time of the programmed tracks. During program play, you can repeat the entire list of programmed tracks, or play them in random order.
      • AMS: The Automatic Music Search feature will play the first 10, 20, or 30 seconds of each track on the disc. When you find the song you want to listen to, you can press the AMS or play buttons for normal playback.
      • Quick Replay: The Quick Replay feature immediately returns to the position 6-50 seconds before the current playback position and restarts playback from there
    • MP3/WMA Files:
      • Playback Mode: You can select from two playback modes - Continuous Mode (all playable files on the disc will be played) or Folder Mode (all playable files in a selected folder will be played)
      • File Skip: Skip to the next or previous file or the beginning of the current file.
      • Forward/Reverse Search: For searching for a particular part of the current file, you can search forward or backward

    • Start Edit Recording: By connecting the remote control inputs found on back of the CD player to a compatible Marantz Tape Deck you can Synchronize the start of the playback by the CD player and the record function of the Tape Deck.

    Inputs and Outputs Notes

Digital Outputs: Two digital outputs, one optical (Toslink) and one coaxial (RCA), are provided for sending signal to the digital input terminals of a receiver, outboard D/A converter, or CD recorder.

Analog Output: The CD player also features a stereo RCA input for analog connection.

Headphone Output: The unit has a front panel 1/4" headphone jack with level control.

Remote Control: Two RCA jacks (1 "in" and 1 "out") are provided for connecting the player and another Marantz A/V component for system remote control purposes. Marvelous CD player

Written By Bryan, Pittsburgh, PA on Monday, July 12, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The first unit I got from Crutchfield was dead on arrival, but they were super about quickly sending a replacement. I've had this player for a couple weeks now and I'm thrilled with it. I was fed up with my Sony 5-disc carousel changer which was always jamming up, so I wanted a single disc tray- loading machine. Sadly, it seems that new single-disc dedicated CD players are becoming quite scarce these days, and although the Marantz carries a fairly hefty price tag, I have to say that it's worth every penny. This thing is built like a tank, looks beautiful, operates smoothly, and sounds phenomenal. To maintain a simple, clean interface, anything beyond basic playback operations (play, track skip, pause, stop, and eject) must be done from the remote. So, if you plan to use the more advance features such as track programming, pitch control, etc., be sure you keep the remote handy. So far, I've played several dozen commercial audio CDs, home-burned audio CDs, and home-burned MP3 discs and the player has handled them all like a champ: loading times are snappy and the sound is so crisp and natural. If you're looking for a high quality basic CD player, I'd highly recommend the Marantz CD5003. I'm delighted with mine.

    You'll hear the difference instantly

Written By Ted, Chicago, IL on Monday, June 28, 2010

The very first CD player I bought 25 years ago was more expensive than this, but all the players back then cost the Earth and sounded terrible. As the prices have come down I have bought progressively cheaper ones, unconvinced performance could justify premium prices.Just listen to this baby! You'll hear the difference instantly. I haven't opened it, but it looks solidly built, and I'm looking forward to hearing hundreds of CDs I haven't played for years.

I had a difficult time finding single play cd players until I checked out Crutchfield. This player incorporates quiet, flawless, smooth operation. It sounds great, even my older cd's sound better on this player. It has multiple ways of hookup, via analog, digital or optical. Pick it up guys, you will not be disappointed! This is the first Marantz product I have purchased and I'm real happy with it.

    Marantz CD5003

Written By Betsy, Prairie Village, KS on Thursday, March 18, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm in heaven! I don't usually set up accounts with internet vendors, but I did so with Crutchfield, just so I could praise the Marantz CD5003. My 10 year old JVC single disc player/receiver died last month. I was desolate. Then, I hauled my 20 year old NAD receiver up from the basement, plugged in my new Marantz, and...oh my gosh, a whole new world of sound. I can actually hear Billie Holliday's heartbeat. My Herbert Von Karajan Mozart Requiem CD sounds almost as good as the vinyl I bought in 1965...subtle, warm, goosebumpy. Thank you, thank you!

    Gorgeous!

Written By Tom, Chicago, IL on Saturday, February 20, 2010

I first became aware of HiFi as a kid in the late 60's when I heard the neighbor's console and by the late 70's I was practically living in a specialty audio dealers show room. I purchased a ton of gear over the years but was forced to sell it due to job loss 8 years ago. I have now purchased a "new" system. The Marantz replaces a 20 year old Sony CA7ES player that I picked up a while back for $15 that seemed "brash". It is so far sonically superior to any player that I have ever owned. It is transparent, sweet, with tremendous definition and clarity. It is also superbly built and downright "sexy" in it's appearance. I fell in love with this player the moment I laid eyes on it and the feeling gets stronger each time I put a disc in the drawer. I have owned this player for a very short period of time but have not been able to get much sleep since I opened up that box and connected it. This really is a beautiful piece of audio gear, worth every penny of it's price tag and then some. The icing on the cake is the superb service that I received from Crutchfield. My package arrived in just 2 days, superbly packed and protected from any possible damage during shipping. My hats off and highest regards!

    Buy One

Written By Bert, Boydton, VA on Wednesday, December 09, 2009

My Denon CD player stopped working without warning. This machine is everything I had imagined and more! In truth, I am being re-introduced to my CD collection. There is a level of clarity and sound quality that was not known with the Denon machine. I added this component to my Bose System, and I am very pleased with the upgraded CD player.

    Extraordinary

Written By Thelma, Cookeville TN on Wednesday, October 21, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This item was bought to replace an old CD player that had stopped working. I relied on the advice of the store that had sold the old CD player and they recommended Marantz. I am thrilled with the purity of sound and have listened constantly since its arrival and installation. I knew that if I bought a unit that was cheaper, I would hate it as long as I had it. This is worth the price. It is easy to use and a delight to listen to. It arrived within a very few days, and my relations with Crutchfield have always been of the best.

    Believer ! !

Written By William, Salisbury, MD on Friday, July 10, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was skeptical when reading so many great reviews about the Marantz 5003 CD player. Being a musician (sax) I realize no two people hear alike especially on certain frequencies. Anyway my Sony top end single cd player croaked and I needed something in a hurry. Gave the Marantz a try and was amazed. It was much clearer, warmer and spatial sounding. It made my vintage horn loaded '69 speakers sound new again ! ! Tried on jazz -Grover Washington, Crusaders,blues- Etta James, D. McClinton, soul-Otis Redding,King Curtis, and rock-Steppenwolf,Lynyrd Skynyrd. Sound excelled in all formats. I'm enjoying my cd's much more. Don't hesitate to buy this one. Wish I'd bought a Marantz earlier.

This CD player is worth every penny. The sound is very clean. I hooked it up to my 20 year old Kenwood intergated amp and my Klipsch speakers and it blew away my old Sony. Nice looking unit also. I would recommend this player to anybody.

    Marantz CD5003

Written By David, New York City on Tuesday, March 17, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This CD player is handsomely designed, well built and the sound is excellent. However, it has a shortcoming that some buyers might want to know about; namely, there is no way to program material on the machine itself. To program material one has to use the remote (one pushes a button that says "program" and then one chooses the tracks by using the numbers on the remote.) I find this an inconvenience, and/or what if one misplaces the remote? The machine does offer a way to access a track by pushing a button the number of times for the track (i.e. you want to play track 3, so you push the button 3 times). For a machine of this elegance that is not very sophisticated. Perhaps Marantz should check out Sony's solution.

    Best CD Player under $600

Written By bt, New York on Saturday, February 07, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have two complete Denon HT setups with high quality Speakers. Main system Denon 4308ci, Denon DVD557, Tecnics 1210MK2 TT, Panamax 5410, 9nt (front), 705 (Rear), CDM-C (Center), ASW-1000 sub.
I purchased Denon CD changers model 280 & 290. These were listed as the top of the line on Denons website at the time they were purchased and cost about $350 each. Now for the bad news - the first one failed about two weeks before the ine year warranty expired. The second one (the newest model at the time it was purchased) also failed one weeks before the warranty expired.
I spoke to friends and found that multi CD transport systems generally were more problematic than single CD units. For my own listening I rarely put more than one CD in the unit I decided to go with a single CD player. I researched the players available in the $300 to $600 range. The reviews (including the recommendation by Crutchfield) made the decision easy. The Marantz CD5003 was the clear choice.
I connected the unit via the Coax connection (same as the Denon) so no changes to my amp's configuration was required. The first cd I tested was Chris Botti's Italia. The highs in his performance are unique and the CD player presented them impeccably. It presents more detail and accuracy than the Denon - I was truly impressed. I've got about 20 hours of listening to the Marantz and I believe that the unit is starting to break in. The presentation seems more detailed and the soundstage is expanding.

    Great CD Player

This unit is well built and the sound quality is great. The direct mode turns off the display and simply outputs pure, clean music via the RCA outs. MP3 discs sound great as well. For the quality of the DAC's in this unit, it's well worth the $. Nice remote as well. This feeds directly into my integrated tube amp and the soundstage and clarity are excellent.

I had an inexpensive Kenwood which I thought was decent and served the purpose but WOW after much research I located my Marantz on Crutchfield and now I listen to music as it was intended to be listened to. Easy to set up and the sound WONDERFUL. Excellent service from Crutchfield. Love my Marantz. While not quite an audiofile I love and appreciate good music.
