Our take on the Yamaha RX-V465

The RX-V465 teams five channels of home theater power with the latest surround sound processing to deliver enveloping, true-to-life sound for all your movies, TV shows, music, and video games. It includes built-in decoding for Dolby® TrueHD and DTS-HD™ — two high-resolution surround sound formats available with many newer Blu-ray players and discs. You also get convenient 1080p HDMI switching for four high-def components. Plus, this versatile receiver lets you add Yamaha's optional iPod® dock or Bluetooth® wireless audio receiver for even more entertainment choices.

Quick, accurate auto setup
Yamaha's sophisticated YPAO auto-calibration system enables easy, precise home theater setup. Plug in the included microphone and place it in your favorite seat. The receiver analyzes the size, volume, relative distance, and frequency response of every speaker in your home theater system, adjusting the settings for each one individually. In minutes, your receiver configures itself for optimum performance with your specific speakers and their placement within the room.

Preset "SCENE" buttons for easy operation
Yamaha's special SCENE modes let you get to your entertainment sources in a hurry. Just press one of the four preset SCENE buttons on the receiver's front panel or remote, and the 'V465 automatically switches to the correct input setting and sound mode for viewing DVD or Blu-ray discs, playing CDs, watching TV, or listening to the radio. Plus, you can individually reprogram each button for different activities of your choice, such as playing video games, listening to your iPod, and more.

Audio Features

Wide-range Frequency Response: The receiver's wide-range frequency response, 10Hz to 100kHz, allows you to enjoy the full fidelity of DVD-Audio and Super-Audio CD players.

192kHz/24-bit DAC: The RX-V465 uses high quality, audio-grade Burr-Brown 192kHz/24-bit digital-to-analog converters for all channels to maximize sound quality.

YPAO Technology: This unit employs the YPAO (Yamaha Parametric Acoustic Optimizer), which automatically adjusts the output of the speakers based on placement, performance, and the room's acoustic characteristics. Using the supplied Optimizer Microphone, YPAO performs the following checks and makes appropriate adjustments to give you the best possible sound from your system:

  • Speaker Wiring: checks which speakers are connected and the polarity of each
  • Speaker Distance: checks the distance of each speaker from the listening position and adjusts the delay of each channel
  • Speaker Size: checks the frequency response of each speaker and sets the appropriate low-frequency crossover for each channel
  • EQ: each channel has a parametric equalizer; choose one of three target settings before running the setup:
    • Natural: adjusts all speaker to a natural sound; useful when the flat setting sounds too bright
    • Flat: use when all the speakers in the system have similar sound characteristics
    • Front: EQs the center and rear speakers to sound like the front; useful when your front speakers are better than the others in the system
  • Volume Level: checks and adjusts the volume level of each speaker

Next Generation Surround Sound: The RX-V465 offers the latest high definition surround sound formats supported by Blu-ray Disc and HD-DVD players:

  • Dolby TrueHD: a lossless coding technology that supports up to 8 channels of multi-channel surround sound for the next generation optical discs; the reproduced sound is true to the original source bit-for-bit
  • Dolby Digital Plus: developed as an extension to Dolby Digital, the coding technology supports 7.1 discrete channels
  • DTS-HD Master Audio: an advanced lossless technology that delivers sound that is bit-for-bit identical to the studio master, offering a high-definition home theater experience
  • DTS-HD High Resolution Audio: high resolution audio, virtually indistinguishable from the original audio track

Surround Modes: The RX-V465 offers the following Surround Modes for movies and music:

  • Decoding Formats: Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital EX, DTS-HD Master Audio, DTS-HD High Resolution, DTS-Express, DTS Digital Surround, DTS 96/24, DTS-ES Matrix 6.1, DTS-ES Discrete 6.1, Dolby Pro Logic, Dolby Pro Logic II (Music, Movie, and Game), Dolby Pro Logic IIx (Music, Movie, and Game), DTS Neo:6 (Music and Cinema)
  • Hi-Fi DSP Modes: Hall in Munich, Hall in Vienna, Chamber, Cellar Club, The Roxy Theater, The Bottom Line, Music Video, 7-Channel stereo
  • Cinema DSP Modes: Standard, Spectacle, Sci-Fi, Adventure, Drama, Mono Movie, Sports, Action Game, Role-playing Game
  • Compressed Music Enhancer: 2-channel Enhancer, 7-channel Enhancer

Pro Logic II/x Parameters: You can adjust the following parameters in Pro Logic II and Pro Logic IIx Music modes:

  • Panorama: sends stereo signals to the surround speakers as well as the front speakers for a wraparound effect
  • Dimension: adjusts the soundfield either towards the front or towards the rear of the room
  • Center Width: moves the center channel output completely towards the center speaker or towards the front left and right speakers

Center Image (DTS NEO: 6 Music): This parameter adjusts the front left and right channel output relative to the center channel to make the center channel more or less dominant as necessary.

Speaker Setup: This feature allows you to manually adjust the following speaker settings:

  • LFE/Bass Out: select the speakers that will output the LFE (low-frequency effect) channel and the other low-frequency signals
  • Speaker Sizes: select from the following speaker sizes for each speaker in your system:
    • Front: Large or Small
    • Center: Large, Small, or None
    • Surround: Large, Small, or None
    • Surround Back: Large x 1, Large x 2, Small x 1, Small x 2, or None
  • Bass Crossover: select the crossover frequency of all the speakers set to Small; choose between 40, 60, 80, 90, 100, 110, 120, 160, and 200Hz
  • Subwoofer Phase: switch the phase of your subwoofer between Normal and Reverse
  • Speaker Level Adjustment: adjust the output level of each speaker from -10 dB to +10 dB in 0.5 dB steps (relative to the main volume)
  • Speaker Distance: adjust the distance from the listener to each speaker (and subsequently the delay applied to the respective channel); select from 1 to 80 feet in 0.5 foot steps
  • Equalizer: each of the full range channels is adjusted individually using the seven band equalizer

Silent Cinema: The Silent Cinema mode allows private listening of multi-channel music or movies, with an accurate simulation of surround sound, through ordinary stereo headphones. Silent Cinema activates automatically whenever you connect headphones while surround sound is engaged.

Compressed Music Enhancer: Compressed formats such as MP3, WMA, and AAC generally remove high and low frequency harmonic information, resulting in a loss of fidelity. The Compressed Music Enhancer, two-channel and 7-channel, regenerates the missing harmonics in compression artifacts and compensates for the loss of low- and high-frequencies to provide improved performance.

Dynamic Range: The amount of dynamic range compression applied to bitstream signals is adjustable; Min/Auto is suitable for low volume listening, Standard is typical for home use, and Max doesn't compress the dynamic range at all.

Bass and Treble Control: You can independently adjust the bass and treble from -10dB to +10dB in 2 dB increments.

Virtual Cinema DSP: Virtual Cinema DSP is an algorithm that allows you to enjoy DSP soundfield surround effects while using a minimal two-speaker system.

Straight Decoding Mode: When the unit is in the Straight mode, 2-channel stereo sources are output from only the front left and right speakers while multi-channel sources are decoded straight into the appropriate channels without any additional effect processing.

Direct: The Direct mode turns off the surround and tone circuitry, and dims the front panel display, allowing sources to bypass the decoders and DSP processors of this unit so you can enjoy pure hi-fi sound from 2-channel analog sources. During Direct playback no sound is output from the subwoofer.

Impedance Selection: You can select 8 ohms or 6 ohms in the menu depending on your speaker application.

Volume Trim: Use this feature to adjust the volume level of each input. This is useful to balance the level of each input to avoid sudden changes in volume when switching between input sources. The range is from -6 dB to +6 dB in 0.5 dB increments.

Speaker Terminals: The receiver has binding post terminals for the front speaker outputs and spring terminals for the center and surround outputs. The binding posts can accept bare wire, pin connectors, and single banana plugs. The terminals are spaced too far apart for dual banana plugs. The collar surrounding the binding post terminals prevent the use of spade connectors.

Sleep Timer: The receiver's Sleep Timer function can be set turn the unit automatically off after 30, 60, 90, or 120 minutes.

Memory Guard: This feature is used to prevent accidental changes to the DSP program parameter values and other system settings.

Video Features

1080p HDMI ver. 1.3a: There are four 1.3a HDMI inputs and one output on the rear panel. These HDMI jacks can be used for 2-channel and multi-channel linear PCM (up to 8-channel) and Bitstream (Dolby Digital, DTS, etc) digital audio formats as well as digital video signals up to 1080p resolution (including 1080/24p). They also support Deep Color (30 bit and 36 bit), xvColor, 120 Hz and 24 Hz refresh rates, and auto Lip-Sync compensation.

HDMI Through: When the RX-V465 is in standby mode (power off), the HDMI Through feature allows HDMI source signals to pass through the receiver to the TV. The HDMI input must be selected before the unit is turned off.

HDTV-compatible Component Video: The RX-V465 offers two component video inputs and a component video monitor output. These inputs and outputs have a frequency response of 5 Hz to 60 MHz and will pass High Definition video sources up to 1080p.

Front Panel AV Input: The front panel's Video Aux input features analog stereo RCA, composite video, and a 3.5mm stereo mini-plug.

Rename: You can rename each input so the display reflects the actual source; choose from 15 templates or create an original name, up to nine characters.

Remote Control

Multi-brand Remote Control: The receiver comes with a multi-brand wireless remote control (RAV293). In addition to the receiver, the remote can control multiple brands of TVs, DVD players/recorders, DVRs, VCRs, etc.

Scene: The RX-V465 features four Scene buttons on the front panel and remote to make operating the receiver easier. These buttons are initially set to default settings for Blu-ray/DVD viewing, TV viewing, CD listening, and Radio listening. Each can be reprogrammed to any input and any soundfield.

Add-on Devices

iPod Universal Dock: With the optional YDS-11 iPod Universal Dock (022YDS11, sold separately), you can connect your iPod digital music player to the RX-V465 and control audio/video playback using the remote control. Most fourth generation and later iPods (Click Wheel) are compatible. Video from your iPod and album art can be displayed on a connected TV monitor.

Bluetooth: An optional YBA-10 Bluetooth adapter (022YBA10, sold separately) can be connected to the dock port on the RX-V465 to allow you to stream audio wirelessly from your compatible Bluetooth device.

Note: Either the iPod dock or Bluetooth dock can be connected to the receiver, not both.

Yamaha RX-V465

Written By jeff, savannah,ga on Saturday, April 24, 2010

It was this or the Sony at the same price and specs. Choose the Yamaha for the play
thru feature. It would be worth more to me just for this feature alone, now that I see how
it works. The manual is junk but thats what you get when a bean counter gets to reduce
the info buy half to save costs. Lots of incomplete sentences and ones that make no
sense. But even with the contridictions (can't do this) see page 39 (can do this if you
program it yourself) I mean you either can or can't but the manual wants it both ways.
Anyway if you keep looking its all in there somewhere. The unit is feature laden for those
who wish to slice and dice it their own way and if you mostly ignore the manual and just
hook it up it works great right off. A bargin for what you get for what it costs.

very dissappointed

Written By no, n.y. on Tuesday, February 23, 2010

received it, hooked it up, way to confusing, no power! says 105 per channel, i say about 10 per channel, worst experence from yamaha ever! i hooked it up to a pair of ps10's, and a pair of infinity p162. sounded terrible, my old 25 watt x 4 channels sounded and pushed the speakers better, what a joke 105 per channel! i had a yamaha A720 intagraded amp , it was 105 per channel, all i can say is the v465 is not even close to that A720. yamaha needs to go back to there old systems.

Great Receiver !!!

Written By Charles, Waterloo, ILL on Tuesday, February 23, 2010

This receiver sounds AWESOME. I've married this receiver to Polk Audio speakers. I have Polk Audio RC65i as my fronts, Polk Audio RC6S as rears, Polk Audio TC65i as my center, Polk Audio PSW10, and a Sony 42" BRAVIA and it sounds as good as a theater. Granted it's not quite as loud, but just as clear and just as spectacular.
With that said, my ONLY complaint is that the hook up/connection diagrams are not that great. I would recommend to YAMAHA that they make that part of the manual a little more user friendly.

Unbeatable for the Price

Written By , Santa Clartia, CA on Saturday, February 20, 2010

Just as my title reads this receiver is unbeatable for the price if it is what you need. For
my applications it is perfect. I run a set of polk RM 85 satellite speakers, polk PSW 111
sub, and Yamaha YDS11SL iPod Dock. With this set up the receiver puts out plenty of
power, and is an all around quality product. There are recievers that put out more power
and more channels ie 7.1 surround and have move hdmi inputs, so if that is you than
you need a higher Yamaha model. But for me this reciever is perfect. Features that are
great are: the ease and simplicity of controlling the receiver and features (before I had a
much more expensive Denon that was so complicated and overpriced that I will never
stray away from the quality that Yamaha puts out; expecially for the price). Other great
features that I love is the HDMI switching that allows me to run all HDMI components (tv
box/blue ray) into the reciever and out to the TV only through a single HDMI cable from
the output of the receiver. Lastly, if you love music like I do this Yamaha reciever unlike
other receivers has a enhancer feature that works great when playing an ipod via the
Yamaha YDS11SL iPod Dock.

Yamaha RX-V465

Written By Marty H., West Richland, WA on Friday, February 12, 2010

This unit does what it says it will do. Lots of options for surround & music. The YPAO
calibration system works very well. As many have said before, the manual is a
nightmare, but once you figure out the menus , the unit is pretty easy to configure.
I paired this unit with the RM 95 surround speakers and i'm very pleased.
This is possibly the best A/V reciever for its price!!

Very pleased

Written By ::CORY::, Northwest Ohio on Saturday, January 30, 2010

Product is simply amazing for the price and free shipping is crazy on it. This thing is large and heavy, but fits perfect in with any other Audio Video gear.

Hooked up a 5.1 set of Polk RM6750 speakers to it and the sound is amazing.

The setup is very straight forward and navigating the menus from the remote is a breeze once you understand the layout.

The only issue I found with the unit is that the YPAO automatic speaker adjustment always thinks my speakers are out of phase (wired backwards, which they arent), but the settings it detects can still be applied.

The HDMI switching is flawless and made my whole setup (Windows 7 Media Center HDMI out, XBOX 360 HDMI and Samsung Blu-Ray BD-P1590 player HDMI).

And it supports FIRMWARE updates in a very novel way. I appreciate that type of support from a manufacturer. Great buy.

Good Receiver; Awful Manual

Written By , Hilton Head Island, SC on Thursday, January 14, 2010

The basic receiver works well and pretty much satisfies my home theater needs. It has no 7.1, nor a phono preamp, both of which I don't need. The automatic set-up with the supplied mike works ok, but I like to set-up my speakers by ear; and that worked, too. Two channel stereo, with sub, is superb. But, for some reason, Dolby B II , doesn't satisfy (?); the rear image is lacking presence. ( I may have a speaker or two, out of phase.) . I miss the blue indicator light my last reciever had showing when the Yamaha had automatically switched to Dolby or DTS .

Be warned : there are menus in menus in menus with this kid, but it seems to do it all. But you are on your own , thanks to a completely incomprehensible instruction manual, the all time WORST I've ever experienced in my 60 years (!) in the game. 'Love the HDMI inputs, which my last receiver, a Sony, didn't have. And with the HDMI inputs, I now enjoy Dolby True HD and DTS Master, which this amp decodes well.

In short, this Yamaha receiver is an good performer and an excellent bargain.
