Alpine

What's a component sub and why would I want one?

A component sub is simply a speaker that's designed to reproduce bass once it's installed in a compatible enclosure. Think about the impact of a movie soundtrack in a big theater or even in your own home HDTV setup. A component sub can add the same kind of power to the music in your car. And a car sub is not all about the boom that you hear on a street corner (although that's cool too) - you can pair a component sub with your choice of enclosure to get bass just the way you like it, from tight and punchy to fat and loose. And once you experience music in your car with a well-tuned subwoofer, you'll never go back.

Our take on the Alpine SWE-1042

by Steven Johnson
Alpine Authorized Online Dealer

Affordable Alpine Type-E subwoofers add a solid shot of bass to your system without draining your bank account. These subs handle up to 25% more power than previous Type-E models, but still use the same tried-and-true design that's made this line so popular with budget-conscious bassheads.

The SWE-1042 10" subwoofer uses a pulp cone reinforced with Kevlar® that responds quickly, yet is very durable. A Santoprene™ rubber surround controls the cone's extended movement for powerful and accurate low-frequency response. Alpine builds the heavy-gauge, custom-stamped steel frame to stand up to the demands of hard playing, while the sub's extended pole piece is vented to dissipate heat and control distortion.

Highlights:

  • 10" 4-ohm subwoofer
  • Kevlar®-treated pulp woofer cone
  • high-excursion Santoprene rubber surround
  • dual oversized Nomex® spiders
  • frequency response: 32-1,000 Hz
  • power range: 50-250 watts RMS
  • peak power: 750 watts
  • sensitivity: 87 dB
  • top-mount depth: 5-3/4"
  • sealed box volume: 0.6-1.25 cu. ft.
  • Recommended Q-Logic Box Type: 1, 2, 3

    Features

Kevlar Reinforced Pulp Cone: This Alpine Type-E subwoofer has a Kevlar reinforced pulp cone. Kevlar adds strength and tear resistance to the woofer cone while maintaining the benefits of a pulp cone design.

Santoprene Rubber Surround: The high-excursion 3/4" Santoprene rubber surround is durable and resistant to the elements, resulting in a very reliable performance. The surround is specially designed to resist deformation that is common in woofers with wide surrounds. This design gives the surround more control over the woofer cone to reduce distortion and possible driver failure.

Dual Progressive Nomex Spiders: This subwoofer has dual Nomex spiders for added stability and mechanical durability. The custom progressive roll gives the woofer a longer, more linear stroke with maximum centering and restoring force. Special edge control design and Nomex construction provide excellent tear resistance, strength and long-term reliability.

Gasket Cover: Alpine uses a Concealed Mount Gasket System to cover the mounting screws for a clean look.

Custom High Strength Steel Basket: The frame is custom stamped from high strength steel.

Bumped Back Plate and Extended Vented Pole Piece: This woofer combines a bumped back plate and an extended pole piece, giving it a nearly 1" peak-to-peak cone excursion. This extra long cone movement provides a higher bass output.

    Enclosure Compatibility

Sealed Box Volume: The sealed box sizes recommended by Alpine range from 0.6 cu/ft to 1.25 cu/ft.

    Manual Correction

Frequency Response: The manual lists the frequency response as "Fs-1kHz" (Fs=Free Air Resonance frequency). According to Alpine, the actual frequency response is 32Hz-1kHz.

you get what you pay for

Written By blah blah, brockton ma on Friday, September 23, 2011

Just blew a sub... I had 2 10 inch subs that a friend gave me and those things pounded..... I ended up blowing one of the coils in 1 sub.... so I went out and bought this alpine 10 e and I am pretty disappointed..... my 2 old subs would wake up the whole neighborhood and people could hear me before they saw me... my seats would shake.... now I put in this alpine thinking there one of the best brands out there and it just isn't the same..... I feel like my old sub is dominating and making all the noise, and its only a single coil which makes a big diff

    Fantastic for a budget sub

Written By Matt, SLC, UT on Tuesday, July 15, 2008

I've got 2 of these in my trunk [under]powered by an Alpine M450 and they sound amazing. Granted, with a more powerful amp they would be even better but because I wasn't looking for bass to shake the entire neighborhood this set-up works great for me.

This sub works great the only reason i gave it four stars instead of 5 was because i have a piece of junk amp and it isnt giving this thing enough power. Other than that this sub works great and i would highly recommend it although you might want to get two. I might write a new review when i see it perform with a different amplifier.

    Almost Perfect

Written By Major, Atl, GA on Saturday, June 21, 2008

I had to choose between the /////Alpine and the punch stage 1's. And I am GLAD that I chose these.
They have great sound quality. The Frequency response goes down to 32 hz (right around where the hardest hitting bass notes are). They have decent sensitivity @87db. And the Xmax :-) the Xmax is 11.7mm( peak around 23mm, per manual).
The only thing that could be improved is the power handling. But after all this is supposed to be a budget sub.
/////Alpine really outdid themselves with these monsters. I have thrown horrible amounts of power, TRUE POWER, at these guys and they still are hanging in there. These babies hit hard like 10's yet they can go low like 12's. I rattle other people's cars and My passengers get massages everytime they ride with me. But people swear that they are 12's and don't believe they are 10's until I show them.
If Alpine increases the rms power handling on it...its a... a Competition Sub.
And with Crutchfield, you can't go wrong.
GRAB A PAIR OF THESE ( AND GIVE THEM GOOD RMS POWER), TRUST, TRUST, TRUST ME... YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED!!!!

    Alpind=Loud

Written By Mike R, Rochester,MI on Friday, May 23, 2008

I have an alpine CDA- 9884 paired with two of these subwoofers. The subwoofers are powered by an MPR-M450. This system is loud, at volume 10/35 I can't see out of my rear view mirror. I wasn't expecting this much bass, but i'm happily supprised.

I have 2 of these subs in a 1999 GMC Sierra Extended cab powered by a 2-channel Kenwood with about 150w RMS to each. Subs sound great and are nicely matched. No distortion and good kick. Would recommend them to the beginner.

    clean and accurate

Written By John C, charleston on Wednesday, August 22, 2007

I just have one with a mono Visionik V108xt 200 watts @ 4 ohm pushing it.

    Does a great job.

Infinity 6x9 3 way Refernce in the back.
Infinity 6 component in the front
    R Fosgate 50 x 4 pushing the speakers

    Kenwood 591

This set up was lacking both low and midrange before he one sub and amp. Now it is just right, and adds a lot of depth to the other speakers as well as nice tight thump.

I was worried about too much bass, as I wanted it to sound like a live concert and not a window ac or bull dozer.

I closed the port on a type 2 Q logic.

This in a 2006 passenger van.

I have a 2 of these 10" in a dodge truck single cab. They are being fueled by an ////ALPINE amp 200 watt. These are the 1st speakers that ever distorted my vision while driving. I have had several different systems in my life, This is the best so far. It is easy for systems these days to rattle the rear view mirror inside, but these dudes rattle both exterior mirrors as well and massages my back too!!!!

    Really good sub

Written By Vax, Centreville, IL on Thursday, May 31, 2007
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This sub is really nice, my bass is super tight and it rocks everything including the mirrors and I only have one! I got it in a Q Logic sealed box .65 cu ft. with a 800S Rockford Fosgate Punch Series Amp bridged at 400 rms. I used to have a Rockford Stage 2 Sub 200 rms, don't even compare to the Alpine, really nice for a good price for a little extra thump!

i have one of these in a 1.3 sq ft ported box powered by a sony 500 watt amp. it hits great for just one 10 but if you want something that will hit deep and loud, then i suggest a bigger setup. im actually about to sell it and get a Type R 15, so hopefully that will hit the lows i want to hear.

    2 subs is enough

Written By scott, Canon city, Colorado on Tuesday, May 09, 2006

When i was reading through the reviews wondering if this was the product and how many subs i needed i wasnt sure. For anyone wondering how many subs to get 2 is plenty. I listen to a lot of hip hop/rap and rock and it sounds good for both. You can allways turn it down a little to for other types of music. I would recomend these subs.

Smooth tight bass that complements your music

Written By Hutch, Key West, FL on Friday, March 17, 2006
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just installed a pair of these subs in a sealed dual box (.7 cubic foot per chamber) that sits under the rear seats of a Honda Ridgeline. I'm using a Alpine MRP-M350 wired for 2 ohms. Like most of the reviewers, I am totally pleased.

My neighbor, a professional musician, helped me dial in the amp settings couldn't believe the sound quality and said it was better than his home studio. He may have been generous in his praise, but this setup rocks.

If you're looking for smooth tight bass that complements your music, this is it. If you want to shatter glass and scare children, go with something else.

    Pretty darn good

Written By Kenny, Phoenix, AZ on Sunday, February 26, 2006

I just bought this product a couple days ago and I am still in the process of breaking it in. Even then it sounds really good. Great SQ sub and it does displace alot of air for single 10". I have it powered by a Profile 400SX which runs 300W rms bridged. It really fills in the the low tones that speakers just don't cover. Perfect for the person looking for some tight, accurate bass that has the ability to really hit the deep notes. I was really torn between getting this sub and the Infinity 1040W, both sound awsome but I am more than pleased with this product. I can only imagine how good it will sound in a couple of days once it's broken in.

    (3) 10" type e

Written By rickzecliipse, St. Louis, MO on Saturday, January 21, 2006

I was a little skeptical of these subs at first. I bought 3 10s and put them onto a hk800d ma audio mono amp. Put them into a custom box I built with .95 cubic feet of space for each in the hatch of a 03 eclipse. Could not be happier. These subs hit so hard I cant sit in the car with it turned all the way up for more than a few seconds. But make sure you have an accurate amount of power running to alpine subs or they will sound terrible. Best bang for the buck.
