Ultra-slim cameras are "good to go"

The best type of camera is the one you actually have on hand when photo-worthy moments come along. At less than an inch thick, these tiny cameras fit in a pocket or handbag, so it's easy to take them with you just about anywhere. Capture memories with ease, from a night out with friends to a little leaguer's home run swing. Today's compact point-and-shoot cameras take sharp, detailed pictures, and some let you record high-def videos, too.

Our take on the Sony Cyber-shot® DSC-TX100V

by Meredith Krebs

A fashion accessory that takes great photos
This slim camera looks like it just stepped off a runway, but it's got everything you need to capture vibrant, lifelike photographs of your favorite people and places — even when the lights get low. The Sony Cyber-shot 'TX100V features a special image sensor designed for outstanding low-light performance. You'll get bright, clear photos in darker settings without using a flash. Plus, its versatile wide-angle 4X zoom lens makes it easy to snap beautiful landscapes, big group shots, or sharp close-ups of your subjects. Optical image stabilization helps keep camera shake from blurring your pictures. And when you're trying to capture something moving fast, you can easily freeze the action with the high speed shooting mode (up to 10 frames per second).

Use the touchscreen to search for smiles
The DSC-TX100V finds the faces in your frame and automatically adjusts its settings to give you crisp, attractive portraits. This camera can also help you capture a baby's fleeting smile — just touch the screen to indicate your subject, and the camera automatically snaps a picture when it spots a grin. If your subject starts to squint as you take a photo, an anti-blink function snaps two quick shots, and then records only the one with her or her eyes wide open. That big 3-1/2" touchscreen sports easy-to-use on-screen controls, so there's no need to fuss with tiny buttons. Its high-resolution display lets you review your still shots and videos in vivid color with ultra-sharp clarity, and it uses OLED technology to make it easy to see even when you're shooting in a bright setting.

High-def movies and breathtaking 3D panoramas
An impressive 1080p HD movie mode lets you shoot high-definition footage when only a video will do. And the next time you find yourself admiring a stunning mountain vista or beautiful cityscape, you can put Sony's ingenious Sweep Panorama mode to good use. It lets you capture the scene around you by sweeping the camera across your field of view — the camera automatically stitches multiple shots together to form one seamless photo. You can even record your multi-shot panoramas in stunning 3D for playback on a compatible 3D television.

3.5" OLED Touch Screen Display: The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX100V digital camera has a 3.5" Xtra Fine OLED touch panel display with 1,229,760 dots and TruBlack technology. The OLED display gives you deeper blacks and more colors than typical LCD displays. The camera does not include a separate viewfinder. A paint pen is supplied to allow you to operate the touch panel. It can be attached to the wrist strap for storage.

Dual Media: This camera has an internal memory of approximately 19 MB. This camera is also compatible with the following recording media: Memory Stick PRO Duo, Memory Stick Pro-HG Duo, SD, SDHC, and SDXC memory cards. Mark2 Memory Stick PRO Duo, PRO-HG Duo, and Class 4 or higher SD cards are recommended when recording movies.

Image Recording Format: The camera records still images in JPEG format. Movies are recorded in AVCHD format or MP4 format. Both formats feature MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 video compression. The audio for AVCHD is 2-channel Dolby Digital, while MP4 movie audio is 2-channel AAC.

Image Sensor: For optimal image quality, the camera uses a 7.77mm (1/2.3") color Exmor R CMOS imaging sensor with approximately 16.8-million gross pixels and 16.2-million effective pixels.

Lens: The DSC-TX100V camera features a wide-angle lens that works well for cityscapes, landscapes, or group portraits.  The lens has a 4x optical zoom and a focal length of 25mm to 100mm (35mm equivalent) for still images, 27-108mm for 16:9 movies and 33-132mm for 4:3 movies. It has an aperture range of F3.5 - F6.3 (W) to F4.6 - F6.3 (T).

Smart/Precision Digital Zoom: The camera has a Precision Digital Zoom of 4x. Combined with the 4x optical zoom, the maximum total zoom is 16x. The camera's Smart zoom technology intelligently uses the full image sensor to let you zoom into the portion of interest by cropping the image size, thus avoiding the image degradation found in most digital zooms. The maximum zoom scale depends upon the image size:

    Image Size Maximum Smart Zoom
    10M 5.1x
    5M 7.1x
    VGA 28x
    16:9 (2M) 9.6x

Note: Smart zoom is not compatible with 16M or 16:9 (12M)

Optical SteadyShot: With Optical SteadyShot image stabilization, the DSC-TX100V uses a built-in gyro sensor to compensate for shaky hands, minimize blur, brighten images, and allow flash-free shooting to preserve the mood.

Still Image Size: When recording digital still images, the DSC-TX100V allows you to choose from six image sizes:

Image Size 19 MB Internal Memory Memory Card Capacity
    2 GB 4 GB 8 GB 16 GB 32 GB
    16M

    16:9-2M
    (1920 x 1080)
    21 2100 4250 8600 17000 34500

3D Photo Recording: The TX100V can record 3D images in two sizes: 16M (4608 x 3456) for printing, or 12M-16:9 (4608 x 2592) for viewing on an HDTV or printing. You can view 3D images recorded on the camera in 3D format by connecting the camera to a 3D-capable TV via HDMI.

Sweep Panorama: You can create a panoramic image from composite images recorded by sweeping the camera horizontally or vertically. The camera continuously shoots at a high speed and then seamlessly stitches the images together with automatic position adjustment to create one stunning panoramic image in the span of a second. Sweep panorama image sizes are as follows:

    • Standard: Horizontal 4912 x 1080 or Vertical 3424 x 1920
    • Wide: Horizontal 7152 x 1080 or Vertical 4912 x 1920

Note: 3D Sweep Panorama recording is also available.

Recording Movies: Besides recording still images, you can also record moving images with sound onto a memory card, but not the internal memory. High Definition movies are recorded in MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 (AVCHD) at 60 frames per second with 2 channel Dolby Digital audio. Standard Definition movies are also recorded in MPEG-4 AVC/H.264, but with 2-channel AAC audio. There are 7 available movie image sizes:

Movie Image Size Average Bit-rate Picture Quality Frame Rate 4 GB Memory Card
    PS: AVC HD 28M 28 Mbps 1920 x 1080 60p 15 min
    FX: AVC HD 24M 24 Mbps 1920 x 1080 60i 20 min
    FH: AVC HD 17M 17 Mbps 1920 x 1080 60i 30 min
    HQ AVC HD 9M 9 Mbps 1440 x 1080 60i 50 min
    1080: MP4 12M 12 Mbps 1440 x 1080 30 fps 40 min
    720: MP4 6M 6 Mbps 1280 x 720 30 fps 1 hr 15 min
    VGA: MP4 3M 3 Mbps VGA size 30 fps 2 hrs 25 min

Note: You can shoot continuously for approximately 29 minutes. The maximum size of an MP4-format movie is approximately 2 GB.

Dual Recording: It is possible to shoot a still image while recording a movie. The image size is fixed to 16:9 (3M). When the movie image size is set to MP4 3M, the still image size is 4:3 (2M). It is not possible to record a still image when the movie quality is set to AVC HD 28M (PS).

Global Positioning System (GPS): The TX100V has a built-in GPS receiver and direction sensor for acquiring location and shooting direction data and record it on the images. Using the included PMB software, you can import photos and movies recorded with location and shooting direction information to a computer and enjoy viewing them with a map which shows their shooting location. GPS signal reception is for outdoor use only, in an open area away from tall buildings.

Burst Mode: The burst mode lets you shoot multiple images in succession when you press and hold down the shutter release. You can choose from a high speed burst of up to 10 images per second, or a low-speed burst of up to 2 images per second in succession.

Self-Timer: You can set the Self-Timer mode to a 10-second or 2-second delay so you can be in the picture. You can also select two Self-Portrait Timer modes which will capture the image 2 seconds after the face of one person or two people are detected.

Focus Modes: You can select from three auto focusing methods:

    • Multi AF: The camera focuses in nine areas around the center of the frame. This method is helpful when your subject is not centered in the frame.
    • Center AF: The camera focuses on a subject in the center of the frame. By pressing the shutter release halfway, you can lock the focus on your subject and recompose your shot with the subject off center.
    • Spot AF: The camera focuses on a very small area in the center of the frame.

Face Detection: Face Detection technology detects up to eight individual faces and controls flash, focus, exposure, and white balance to deliver accurate, natural skin tones with reduced red-eye. It can also give priority to children or adults. You can also select and register an individual's face to be given priority.

Anti-Blink Function: The Anti-blink function works to help counter blinking and squinting. When Face Detection is active, and the Scene Selection is set to Soft Skin or Soft Snap, the Anti-blink function captures two images, recording only the photo with less squinting. If a blink is detected in other shooting modes, a warning will be displayed after you take the shot so you can determine whether or not you need to take another shot.

Smile Shutter Mode: The Smile Shutter technology automatically detects and captures a smiling face. Simply activate by pressing the Smile Shutter button and the camera will capture a smile the moment it happens. You can select the degree of Smile Detection Sensitivity to Slight smile, Normal smile or Big Smile.

Scene Recognition: Scene Recognition operates in Easy Mode, and automatically detects shooting conditions and selects the appropriate camera settings. Recognized scenes include: Portrait, Infant, Twilight Portrait, Twilight, Backlight Portrait, Backlight, Landscape, Macro, Close Focus, Spotlight, and Low Light. In addition, if the camera recognizes the need for a tripod, it will indicate it with an icon. You can choose from iSCN Auto or iSCN Advanced.

Scene Selection Modes: You can choose from the following Scene Selection modes:

    • Soft Skin: Allows you to shoot faces with smooth-looking skin
    • Soft Snap: Allows you to shoot images with a softer atmosphere for portraits, flowers, etc.
    • Anti Motion Blur: For shooting indoor shots without flash to reduce subject blur.
    • Landscape: This mode is used for shooting landscapes at a distance.
    • Backlight Correction HDR: Shoots three images having different exposures to create a single image with a greater range of gradation.
    • Twilight Portrait: This mode is used for shooting people in the foreground at night.
    • Twilight: This mode is used for shooting a distant subject at night.
    • Hand-held Twilight: Allows you to shoot night scenes with less noise without using a tripod.
    • High Sensitivity: The camera shoots without flash in low light, reducing blur.
    • Gourmet: Shoots food arrangements in delicious color.
    • Pet: Allows you to shoot images of your pet with the best settings.
    • Beach: This mode is for shooting at seaside or the lakeside.
    • Snow: This mode shoots snowy scenes clearly, preventing sunken colors.
    • Fireworks: This mode allows you to record fireworks in all their splendor.
    • Hi-Speed Shutter: For capturing fast moving subjects outdoors or other bright places.

Built-In Flash: The camera's built-in flash features a range of 3-1/4" to 16' 8-7/8" with the zoom set to wide and 1' 7-3/4" to 13' 1-1/2" with the zoom set to telephoto. The flash settings include:

    • Auto: the flash automatically strobes when the surroundings are dark
    • On: the flash strobes with every shot
    • Slow Synchro: the flash is used regardless of the amount of ambient light, but the shutter speed is slower under dark conditions, allowing you to clearly shoot a background that is out of the flash-lit area.
    • Off: the flash does not operate

Red-eye Reduction: The flash pre-strobes before shooting to reduce the red-eye phenomenon. You can set to Auto (when Face Detection is activated), On, or Off.

Metering Modes: You can select Spot, Center-weighted, or Multi-pattern Metering. Spot metering lets you adjust the exposure to the subject, even when the subject is a backlit or when there is strong contrast between the subject and the background. Center-weighted metering measures the center of the image and determines the exposure based on the brightness of the subject. When multi-pattern metering is used, the image is divided into multiple regions and metering is performed in each region. The camera judges the subject position and background brightness, and determines a well-balanced exposure.

White Balance: When the white balance is set to auto, the white balance is set automatically in response to the condition of the subject, and the overall color balance is adjusted. When shooting under special lighting conditions, you can select the settings manually. When using flash, you can select the flash white balance mode. The white balance can also be set to Incandescent, Fluorescent 1 (white fluorescent), Fluorescent 2 (natural white fluorescent), Fluorescent 3 (day white fluorescent), Daylight, Cloudy, or One Push (adjust white balance depending on the light source).

Grid Lines: The cameras on-screen grid lines make it easy to set a subject's horizontal and vertical position.

Histogram: A histogram is a graph showing the brightness of an image. The graph display indicates a bright image when skewed to the right side, and a dark image when skewed to the left side.

In-camera Function Guide: An on-screen function guide text/icon display makes it easy to learn the camera functions that give you greater creative freedom to adjust photo settings. The function guide can be turned on or off as desired.

Date and Time: Each time you take a picture, the camera records the date and time. The date and time are not superimposed on the picture, instead saved in a data file along with the image. Using the included PMB software, you can print or save images with the date.

    View, Edit, And Print Images

Viewing Images: The Sony DCR-TX100V allows you to view your images one at a time, 12 at a time in a 4 x 3 index view, or 28 at a time in a 4 x 7 index view. In the Date Select mode, a montage of thumbnail images are aligned along a time line. You can advance the time line by dragging your finger or the paint pen across the screen horizontally.

Auto Orientation: When the camera is rotate to shoot a portrait (vertical) image, the camera records it position change and displays the image in the portrait position.

Playback Zoom: You can enlarge a recorded still image up to 8x the size of the original image. Once the image is zoomed, you can pan left to right and up or down through the image.

Slide Show: The Slide Show function lets you play back images one after the other. You can select from the following slide show effects (Simple, Nostalgic, Stylish, or Active). Each effect has a preset music soundtrack, or you can choose from the 4 selections. The interval between the pictures can be adjusted, allowing you to choose 1, 3, 5, and 10 seconds or automatic to suit the selected effect. You can select Folder play (all images in the selected folder), All play (all images on the memory card), or This Date (all images from selected date). When repeat is selected, the images are replayed in a continuous loop.

Calendar: Thumbnail images can be displayed in a calendar format and searched by date. As you find the desired month, the images recorded during that month can be selected and viewed.

Rotating Images: Recorded images can be rotated 360-degrees in 90-degree increments on the camera's LCD screen.

Retouching Still Images: You can add effects or make corrections to a recorded images and then record it as a new file while the original image is retained. You can use the following features to edit your recorded images:

    • Trimming: playback zoom is performed on the image and part of the image is cropped
    • Red Eye Correction: corrects the red-eye phenomenon caused by flash
    • Unsharp Masking: sharpens the image within a chosen frame

Deleting/Protecting Images: You can delete a selected image, or you can delete all the unprotected images at once. In order to avoid accidentally deleting of an image, it can be protected.

    Excellent pocket camera

Written By Pete W, Roseburg, OR on Monday, May 09, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this camera online and had it shipped next day for a vacation. I received it promptly and in good condition. The camera is everything advertised. I like the automatic and manual settings for taking various types of shots. The panorama is going to take getting used to. Sometimes sweeping too slow sometimes too fast. Not sure if I will use it much because of that. This camera will get a lot of use now at home and work.
