You don't have to choose between great sound and your local radio station, since a growing number of your favorite stations now use HD Radio technology to improve their AM and FM broadcasts with better sound quality and static-free reception.

Connect the GEX-P20HD HD Radio tuner to your compatible Pioneer stereo, tune to a participating station, and discover the difference. You'll enjoy FM that's almost CD quality, and AM that's as clear as traditional FM. Many HD Radio stations also broadcast text information, so you'll be able to see artist info and song titles appearing on the display of your Pioneer stereo. Get "tagging"
You can "tag" songs that you hear on an HD Radio broadcast for future purchase. Connect your iPod® to your Pioneer stereo, and the songs will show up in a playlist called "Tagged". The next time you sync your iPod, you can buy the songs you want from the iTunes Music Store.

Multicasting

    Features

    Overview: The Pioneer GEX-P20HD is a hideaway HD Radio tuner module, designed to receive high-quality HD Radio broadcasts for select HD Radio-ready Pioneer car stereos. It connects to the Pioneer head unit through the IP-BUS interface, and has a pass-through to allow you to add other external units to the stereo system.

    HD Radio: HD Radio is the system for digital AM and FM broadcasting in the U.S. More than 1000 radio stations are broadcasting their primary signals in digital HD Radio technology, as a free service. No subscription is required to receive HD Radio. HD Radio features high quality audio, FM multi-casting, and data services.

    Multicasting: In addition to conventional broadcasts, with HD Radio broadcasting it is possible to choose from up to 8 multicast programs (HD1 to HD8 and analog). There are also data programs for each program.

    iTunes Tagging: It is possible to save the song's information (tag) from and HD Radio broadcasting station to your iPod/iPhone connected to your compatible Pioneer headunit. The songs will show up in a playlist called "Tagged" in iTunes the next time you sync your iPod/iPhone. Then you can directly buy the songs you want from the iTunes Music Store.

    Note: This function can be operated with the following iPod/iPhone models - iPod nano (3rd/4th/5th/6th gen), iPod classic (80/120/160GB), iPod touch (1st/2nd/3rd/4th gen), and iPhone (2G/3G/3GS/4).

    Compatible Headunits: The GEX-P20HD is compatible with the HD Radio-ready Pioneer head unit.

    Note: Not all Pioneer HD Radio-ready headunit support iTunes Tagging.

    Best Station Memory (BSM): The BSM function of the headunit allows you to store the six strongest broadcast frequencies in preset memory. The sub-channels, however, cannot be stored in memory.

    Reception Mode: If a digital broadcast reception condition gets poor, the tuner automatically switches to the analog broadcast of the same frequency. You can turn off the automatic switching which will allow you to tune only analog stations.

    Seek Tuning Mode: The seek tuning settings can be changed. The Auto (All) setting is the normal seek tuning position. The Manual (HD) setting allows you to seek Digital stations only.

    Local Function: Local seek tuning lest you tune in only those radio stations with sufficiently strong signals for good reception.

    Pass-Through: The GEX-P20HD features a IP-Bus output ("pass-through") port so you can connect an additional Pioneer IP-Bus component to your compatible Pioneer HD Radio-ready headunit.

    No problems. Threw it into my f150 and plugged into pioneer TV easy (avh DVD series class3 according to Manuel) easy. Down here in Alabama where 4g is scarce the HD radio is noticeable different in clearness as compared to stock antenna running through adapter into deck. Happy.
    Pros:
    Sound quality. Don't see box. Plug n play on received.
    Cons:
    No tags for radio stations on list. Sometimes when in the woods radio spazzes from analog to digital over and over and makes it sound like waves of loud followed by waves of quiet during the song. But may be based on the radio station

    Uses the IP bus to tie into your Pioneer bus system, can use it to daisy chain. Great add-in feature. Power also ties into your Pioneer system. unplug your antenna from your stereo and plug it into this device. That was not clear, but once you do you will find this to be a great product. Glad I bought it and would again.
    Pros:
    No real wiring, just plug and go, integrates into the your Pioneer radio and just works. Depending on your stereo it will blend your signal. When you get a good strong signal it sounds like a CD, amazing quality I can actually hear.
    Cons:
    I can see if the radio does not support blending this product will be for you, but I would make sure you unplug the antenna from your stereo and plug it into this device. I bet that will fix most peoples problems with this produce.

    BEFORE I PURCHASED THE PRODUCT I WAS WONDERING WHAT WOULD HD RADIO SOUNDS LIKE. JUST LIKE WHEN HD TV CAME OUT I WONDERED WHAT IT WOULD LOOK LIKE. THE SOUND OF THE HD STATIONS ARE CRISPY CLEAR,CLEAN AND A JOY TO LISTEN TO.

    Great Sound - Interface shortomings

    Received this unit as a gift add-on to my Pioneer AVH3300BT. Easy to install, and interface with the head unit. I live in the Atlanta metro area and have quite a selection of HD stations. When listening in HD, the sound is really CD quality.

    Now to the interface. PLEASE NOTE: When you store presets, it does not store the station name, frequency, or any data that will allow you to identify what station you have stored. It only says "Preset 1", "preset 2" etc... Also, I expected more from the display. All you get on the display is the station info and maybe artist. Anything longer that 30 characters is truncated (does not scroll).

    Fantastic sound easy installation
    Cons:
    Presets are useless Info displayed / method of display is disappointing.

    Great Product!

    I should have done this years ago. I have a Pioneer AVIC-F700BT and the XM module. To add the HD module, I only had to touch 4 wires 2 of which were the antenna and bus cable. The minute I powered it up, BEAUTIFUL!

    Not to mention, the support staff was excellent in answering all my questions and I had lots of questions. A special thanks to Cody for for his time and patience! The kids love it.

    Works Very Well, And With More Headunits Than Listed - Even Headunits

    I had added HD to several of my other vehicles as the market in my area has a number of great stations in HD I enjoy. Just as I enjoyed FM in the 1970's as it emerged, I've found HD radio to be an even greater listening experience. I had purchased a Pioneer DEH-P47DH headunit from Crutchfield for my customized 1985 Trans Am back in 2009. This "Din and a Half" model fit the console perfectly and was the reason I purchased it over others. I didn't know at that time the DEH- P47DH was unchanged from 2001, but it really offered great features and I liked it.

    I had noticed my older Pioneer headunit had a blue IP-bus, and it had been advertised as satellite and 50 CD player ready back in 2009. I called the factory and they couldn't tell me the GEX-P20HD would work with my older headunit, but they did say I might try it. I bought it from Crutchfield, and I'm now very happy I did. It works perfectly. The only feature that doesn't work is "iTunes tagging". Who cares - I just wanted great HD radio, and that's exactly what I got. This tuner is also faster and easier in use than the Peripheral and Kenwood models I also own, and it gets all of my available signals and plays them excellent. So, yes, this unit is also backwards compatible with some old Pioneer headunits that aren't listed by Panasonic as compatible.

    Pioneer HD Radio

    I purchased this Pioneer unit from Crutchfield and installed this in my car. As always the
    Crutchfield team went above and beyond in knowledge and helping me pick out what I
    really wanted. The install was easy (after browsing through the instructions) the power
    wire is meant to be constant, not switched. (opps) This hd radio is awesome. The sound
    quality is cd quality and where I live (close to Seattle) there is many stations to pick from
    (over 18 that I would listen to) The station and song naming is great but having a deck
    that has a 4 line display and only being able to use 1 line for that could have been made
    better by Pioneer but the sound quality is so good, I can get over the 1 line issue easily.
    The last thing I would like to say is that I have not had this cut in and out while listening to
    any stations like many reviews I have read talk about it cutting in and out a lot. I have not
    seen this happen yet. (may just be the area I live in I dont know)

    Don't waist your $$

    I had read reviews saying that it was a good product but the service was unreliable. I had read the same thing about satellite radio but since I lived in NYC i figured that I wouldn't have that problem. Well I was right in the case of satellite radio but wrong in the case of HD radio. The service is VERY spotty. If you were to find a spot that it worked and sit there and listen to it then it would be pretty good. However, as you drive the HD comes in and out the whole time which is actually more annoying than listening to regular AM radio. Plus it seems to make the actual service worse. I never had problems with serivce in the past but n=since adding the component I actually have dead zones where I lose service completely.

    To sum up I would definitely not waist my money.

    Easy hook up. Sounds great. Once and a while It goes silent (rarely). I guess that's typical of digital circuitry. I just changed to cd player and then back and sound came right back.

    Good when in signal - needs integration with HU

    I live in the suburbs. The tuner unit works well and sound quality is excellent when in range of the station. On many stations, however, the tuner drops from digital (HD) to analog frequently and the quality in analog actually seems worse than on the original tuner that comes with the head unit. If it weren't for this problem alone, I'd love the unit.

    Complicating this further is that there are also problems with the level of integration with the head unit I own (Pioneer's AVIC-X910BT In-dash Navigation System), though these are not necessarily the fault of the HD tuner. This includes: (1) On the Pioneer display, you can get song/artist/station details on a channel when on that channel's screen, but nothing on the preset list (where you store a channel) - not even frequency. It just stays blank. (2) To make the head unit continue to work with MSN Direct, you need an antenna splitter (one lead to the HU, one to the HD tuner). I installed one, but then signal was then too weak to receive MSN Direct. I plan to try another splitter in the hopes that this will fix it. Otherwise, I will likely have to give up on HD Radio as I'd rather have MSN Direct and conventional radio.

    These problems are disappointing given that integration with a Pioneer system should not be a shortcoming of a Pioneer device.

    Becareful of early adopting!

    I bought this unit to upgrade my DEH-P710BT Head. It plugged in and was recognized quickly by the head unit and Pure HD radio faded in sweet and crisp. Then I drove around and had HD radio fade in and out frequently. It got old quickly and then I tried to tune in Rush L. on the AM side and got nothing but silence. I tried all the possible settings but have realized the cost of early adopting. I'll enjoy my nice bluetooth stereo head unit and wait till HD radio is broadly adopted and used, then upgrade. Cheers

    Great sound... when you have signal

    First I will say that the installation was very straight-forward. I installed this unit along with a Pioneer AVH-P4100DVD, which has a 7" touchscreen. Unfortunately, Pioneer decided to cram all the info like frequency and station ID on the very top line of the display only. Also, when storing presets it does not list the station name or freq. When using the built-in FM/AM tuner, it at least tells you what channel has been preset to each preset slot.

    The sound quality when you're receiving digital is a vast improvement! When tuning to a different station, the broadcast is initially in analog and switches to digital after a few seconds... so you actually get to hear the improvement each time. An annoyance I noticed was that the tuner would switch back and forth between digital and analog regardless of signal strength. I live within 15 miles of most our local radio stations, and the terrain is relatively flat so I can only blame EMI or a tolerance with the module programming that forces it back to analog once signal drops below a preset %. Ultimately, I have decided to return the module for this reason.

    My rating of 3 stars is mostly based on the way it interfaces with the headunit. This is the second HD tuner released by Pioneer, and they didn't seem to make much in terms of improvement. My complaints are echoed in the reviews from the GEX-P10HD model as well.
