Kenwood

Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Our take on the Kenwood KDC-BT948HD

by Ken Nail

Can you have it all? Maybe not, but you'll come pretty close with Kenwood's KDC-BT948HD CD receiver. This great-looking car stereo will liven up your next journey with hands-free calling, HD Radio™ reception, PANDORA® Internet radio, and more.

Play your media, plus PANDORA® Internet radio
Plug your iPod® or iPhone® into the KDC-BT948HD's USB input and take charge from the receiver's controls. With your iPhone and the PANDORA® app, you can access your favorite stations from the face of the receiver, whenever you're in range of your network. And you'll find "thumbs-up" and "thumbs-down" ratings right at your fingertips for instant feedback when you're listening.

You can scroll through your albums, artists, and playlists, or use Direct Search to find the song you're looking for — just enter the first three letters of an artist, tune, or album to quickly narrow your search. Alphabet Search lets you zip right to the first letter of a song or album.

HD Radio™ for superior sound and more
HD Radio is changing the radio landscape, with its superior sound and additional programming. The KDC-BT948U's built-in HD Radio tuner lets you tune into that digital sound quality, access the extra programming offered on secondary channels, and tag tunes for future purchase at the iTunes® store.

Hands-free calling
Kenwood includes Bluetooth® functionality in this receiver so you can drive more safely. No fumbling for a phone when a call comes in. Just touch one button, and talk naturally like your caller is sitting next to you — you'll hear your caller through your car speakers.

Great sound tops it off
You'll find the audio tools you need to get the best possible performance in your car, including a 3-band parametric equalizer, built-in frequency filters, and more. And if you're the kind of person who lives for more power, you'll be happy with the three sets of high-voltage preamp outputs that deliver a low-noise signal to your outboard amps.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Kenwood stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Kenwood, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

To access Pandora you must have an Apple iPhone (iOS3 or later) with the latest version of the Pandora application from Apple's iTunes App Store. Your iPhone will need an active Data Plan account with connection to the Internet via 3G, EDGE, or WiFi. You will also need a Pandora music service account.

Note: Apple iPod/iPhone software updates may change functionality results. If you download a newer software version, you may need to reset the head unit and your iPod/iPhone to regain functionality. If this doesn't work, you may need to revert to the older software version or wait until a newer software update is available.

Aux In: The unit is equipped with a rear-panel 3.5mm minijack auxiliary input that can be used to input audio from a portable audio source, such as a portable MP3 player. The KDC-BT948HD allows you to select the source type displayed when using the auxiliary input. You can choose from AUX, DVD, Portable, Game, Video, or TV. The Aux input must be turned on to function. The unit has 3 auxiliary input modes.

      • On1: Outputs the sound of the external unit connected to the Aux terminal when switched to the Aux source.
      • On2: Activates the attenuator function when turning on the power with the auxiliary source selected. This prevents the noise when no external unit is connected to the Aux terminal. Turn off the attenuator function when listening to output from an external unit.
      • Off: Disables the selection of the Aux source.

Rear Auxiliary Input "Ready": The unit already features a rear-panel auxiliary input, but if you need a second auxiliary input, one can be added to the rear of the unit. When used with an optional adapter, this unit can accept a rear input from an auxiliary source. When the CA-C1AUX adapter (113CAC1AX, sold separately) is used, you cannot connect the optional Sirius Satellite Radio tuner to the head unit because the adapter plugs into the DIN changer control connection on the head unit.

Text Scroll: The KDC-BT948HD will display CD text or Audio file text. You can set the text scrolling feature to two different modes (Auto or Manual) to scroll longer titles across the screen.

Music Search: The Kenwood AM/FM CD receiver features a Music Search feature which allows you to scroll through and select your MP3/WMA/AAC music folders and files, as well as scroll through your audio CD's music tracks using the head unit's rotary knob.

Direct Music Search: The supplied IR wireless remote control (RC-405) allows you to search for music directly by entering the track number.

High Speed Search: This function allows you to continuously scroll up or down your disc's track list at high speed.

Playback Modes: The Kenwood KDC-BT948HD features the following Repeat, Random, and Scan playback modes.

      • Repeat Play: Track, File, or Folder
      • Random Play: Disc or Folder
      • Scan Play: Track or File (plays the first 10-seconds of each music track on a disc or music file in a folder)

Last Position Memory: If the unit is shut off or switched to the tuner mode while a CD is playing, the next time CD is selected as the source, playback will resume from the point where it left off.

CD Read: This function sets the method for reading a CD disc. You can choose between two modes.

      • CD1: Automatically distinguishes between audio file disc and music CD when playing a CD, CD-R/RW disc.
      • CD2: When unable to play a special formatted CD, set this function to CD2 to force playing. Some music CD discs may be unplayable even when set to this mode.

Off Insert/Eject: A CD disc can be inserted or ejected with the power off. When a disc is inserted with the power off, the unit will automatically power up and begin playback.

Auto Insert: The CD player will automatically reinsert the disc if it's ejected, but not removed for 20 seconds or more.

Changer Controls: The Kenwood KDC-BT948HD offers connection and control of Kenwood's 10-disc CD-changer (113KDCC719, sold separately).

      Audio Section

24 Bit D/A Converter: The Kenwood KDC-BT948HD utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior CD sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The Kenwood KDC-BT948HD is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit. The power output specs for the KDC-BT948HD are as follows:

      • Full Bandwidth Power: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20-20kHz, 1% THD)
      • Maximum Output Power: 50 watts x 4 channels

6ch/4V Preamp Outputs: The KDC-BT948HD features front, rear and subwoofer 4-volt preamp outputs. The front and rear speaker preamp outputs are balance and fade adjustable. The subwoofer preamp output is non-fading. The front, rear, and subwoofer preamp outputs are fixed to the rear chassis of the head unit.

Note: You can turn the KDC-BT948HD's built-in amplifier off to improve the quality of the sound from the head unit's preamp outputs.

Front & Rear High-Pass Filter: The KDC-BT948HD features an independent High-Pass Crossover for the front & rear channels when your front & rear speakers are connected by the unit's speaker-outputs or preamp-outputs. You can adjust the high-pass crossover from "Through", 30, 40, 60, 80, 90 100, 120, 150, 180, 220, or 250Hz. The "Through" selection is a full-range setting. This feature is very helpful when you have smaller-type speakers in the front and larger-type speakers installed in the rear of the vehicle. You can also select the high-pass crossover slope ( for the front & rear channels.

Subwoofer Controls: The Kenwood KDC-BT948HD provides the following subwoofer preamp output controls.

      • Low-Pass Filter: The receiver features a built-in Low Pass Filter control for the unit's subwoofer preamp output. You can select from 30, 50, 60, 90, 80, 100, 120, 150, 180, 220, 250Hz, or "Through". The "Through" setting allows your external amplifier's crossover network to do all the filtering for your subwoofer.
      • Subwoofer Phase: You can adjust the phase of the subwoofer output between 180-degrees (Reverse) or 0-degrees (Normal).
      • Subwoofer Level: You can independently control the subwoofer preamp output level from the CD receiver. You select levels between -15 to +15.

Rotary Volume Control: The CD receiver uses a 7-way rotary volume control that increases and decreases the volume of the stereo from 0 to 35. The rotary knob also controls other audio settings such as Balance, Fader, Bass, Mid, Treble and preset EQ settings. In addition, the rotary knob allows you to scroll through and select your music tracks when the Music Search function is activated.

Volume Offset: The level of each source may be independently adjusted to prevent radical leaps in output volume when switching from one source to another. The available settings range from -8 to 0.

Supreme+ Setting: When MP3, WMA, and AAC files encoded at a low bit rate (less than 96 kbps, 44.1k, 48kHz) are played, the Supreme+ Setting function restores their high frequencies so the sound quality is closer to files encoded at a high bit rate. The processing is optimized for the compression format and the bit rate used. When the Supreme+ Setting is Off, the unit plays the original sound stored in the audio file.

Sound Excellence DSP: In order to optimize the sound quality, you can use the Sound Excellence DSP to set the type of vehicle and speaker sizes, locations, and x-over points. The DSP settings include the following:

      • Car Type: Choose from Compact, Full Size Car, Station Wagon, Mini Van, SUV, Mini Van (Long), or Off

        • Front High Pass Filter: Frequency (40, 60, 70, 80, 100, 120, 150, 180, or 220Hz); or you can also select full-range
        • Rear High Pass Filter: Frequency (40, 60, 70, 80, 100, 120, 150, 180, or 220Hz); you can also select full-range
        • Subwoofer Low Pass Filter: Frequency (40, 60, 70, 80, 100, 120, 150, 180, or 220Hz); or you can also select full-range; Phase (Normal/Reverse)

Note: The DSP function can be bypassed.

Equalizer Control: Equalizer Control allows you to use one of the System Q presets, or set your own custom settings using the 3-band Equalizer. The EQ adjustments are as follows:

      • Preset EQ: You can select from Natural, Rock, Pops, Easy, Top 40, Jazz, Game, iPod (you can select from 22 EQ curve types), or User.

Nice radio. A little difficult figure out at first, might be easier if you read the instruction booklet first. Looks great, sounds great and is overall very nice.

      Awful interface, display glare

Written By Weezulguy, Delmar, DE on Thursday, March 29, 2012

I had high hopes when I ordered this unit about a year ago, but I am now shopping for another model, nothing but complete disappointment. I constantly lose the connection with my iPod when it locks up, the user interface makes no sense whatsoever, and the display has a glare on it no matter how low the sunlight conditions. Was also not thrilled with having to run cables from the back for both the USB and the microphone hookups.
      Pros:
The bluetooth has good sound quality.
      Cons:
Poorly designed interface, high glare on display.

      Great Features

This unit seems to have it all, HD Radio and Bluetooth being built in. But why isn't everything 5 stars? Like the rest of the reviews you will read about this unit, are it's radio pre-sets and the display in the sun. To get to the pre-sets, you have to go into the menu, click in the knob once and then you will see the pre-sets, that is unless it's a sunny day. The display, with its multicolor display is pretty awesome at night, but during the day certain colors fade out and most of the display is hard to read.

But when it comes to features, this unit does not lack. It allows you to tune your audio to exactly how you would like it with multiple settings for every aspect of your car. To read up on the features, download the manual from crutchfield.

Overall, the unit has not bothered me thus far more than the screen being hard to read. I have learned my pre-set numbers based on the station that's playing and can access other stations without taking my eyes off the road. Still worth the money for the features it has to offer.
      Pros:
Audio control, Display (AT NIGHT), Remote, HD Radio + Bluetooth built in
      Cons:
      Display (Daytime) and Radio pre-sets

      Pretty darn good

I was looking for a factory upgrade to go with my stock speakers and plan to add an amp/sub down the road. These were my criteria: 1. I wanted something subtle (not too flashy...been robbed too many times) 2. It needed real iphone 4s compatbility 3. It needed Pandora control 4. It needed Aux input in addition to USB input 5. I would like a remote control 6. Bluetooth was a definite plus 7. HD Radio built-in was a definite plus

This unit covered all the bases. The reason I chose this unit over one of the digital media receivers (no cd-player) was because of the hd radio.
      Pros:
      1. Amazing sounds quality, even through stock speakers. 2. Good remote 3. Good radio reception
      Cons:
      1. not super intuitive, had to read the manual for a few feature (pandora control, tagging, etc...) 2. slow menus...have to wait a second for menus to load 3. bad bluetooth integration...i need to check the manual but it doesn't actually lookup names, voice dial, or speed-dial favorites 4. poor itunes/pandora interaction. first, you can't launch or quit pandora from the deck. second, if pandora is running it will play on both "iphone" and "pandora" sources on the radio. this is buggy.

I can honestly say, I did not expect this receiver to be this good. It has so many crossover and equalizer functions, it is amazing. The Bluetooth technology works great, very crisp and clear. The sounds quality is also premium. You can hear all the little "zips and zings" in music that is hidden by crappy receivers. The only downside is that the HD radio is less than what I expected. I had hopes for more, but it does not appear that I got it (also could be my location, I've only tested it at home and at work). Other than that, it is worth every penny.
      Pros:
      Sound Quality
      Cons:
      HD Radio

I own a 1995 BWM convertible that my 16 year old daughter will begin driving. I wanted her phone to be 'put away'... The matte black finish and variable illumination are very good matches to the factory interior (best I found). Her iPhone connects thru the glove box ( very clean appearance) and should keep her from checking/making texts. iPhone integration is slick and easy. Access to her playlists, Pandora, and Bluetooth hands free calling. I am impressed. Best of all, matched this head unit to some new component speakers....WOW, AWESOME SOUND!!!
      Pros:
looks like factory would be 17 years later...easy to use...lots of wow factor...and great sound!
      Cons:
awesome at night....after lots of fiddling with display, illumination and contrast...good view during the day...

This unit was everything I was hoping for and more. The main reason I wanted it was for the tone control and display, and both far exceeded my expectations. I installed the unit at first with just my stock speakers, and later replaced them with aftermarkets and added a 4 channel amp and a sub. Even with the stock speakers I was quite impressed with how much I could tweak the tone. Once I put 6 speakers and a sub behind it I was blown away. I was worried about how visible the display would be in sunlight from reading other reviews, but so far I have had no problems. I just played with the contrast and its easier to read than my stock display was. The HD radio was a great surprise as well. I was expecting a slight difference, but it turned out to be a whole other level of clarity. Also, I have had no problems with the shuffle feature using a 120gb Ipod Classic. Overall, great unit, well worth the price, and props to my Crutchfield adviser for helping me find the perfect unit.
      Pros:
Beautiful Display, Great Tone Control, Right Price, HD Radio

      Nice Stereo, but ...

Written By KWS, Colorado on Thursday, September 29, 2011

. when using a USB thumb drive, the Random All feature continuously plays the same 30-50 songs. Over and over. The same 30-50 songs. I have a 16 GB thumb drive with over 3000 songs and the unit will only play 1-2% of the collection randomly. At first, I thought it was my imagination, but it's not. I contacted Kenwood and their response was that this is "normal operation." I could be mistaken, but I would think this issue could be easily remedied by a firmware update, but Kenwood seems uninterested. This is a real bummer for me because other than the Bluetooth, I only use the USB and a thumb drive. No HD tuner, no CD player, no iPod. Nope. I don't use any of those things. Just the USB, and it has this problem, which is basically a dealbreaker for me and it's a real shame because I really like the stereo, but for this one issue.

So, the point of this review is not to cover all the other features of the stereo, as there are plenty of other reviews out there that do that, but rather to provide a warning about the one feature that is really important to people who the use a car stereo the way I do that makes this stereo practically useless. The really unfortunate thing is that an issue like this is one that someone might not pick up on right away and by the time you figure out what is happening, it's too late to return the stereo for another model as the return window has closed. At any rate, I'll be replacing this unit as soon as I can find a suitable replacement.

Cannot see screen and will not charge iphone

Written By Denny, Ringgold, GA on Friday, September 23, 2011

Bought this unit because of all the features. If it bright there is no way I can see the screen unless I hold my hand up to block the sun, which is very aggravating. Stopped connecting to my iphone about a month into owning the unit. Not happy with Kenwood.

Nice unit. Does pretty much everything that I want it to. However, as mentioned in a few other reviews the quality of the radio reception is not as good as my stock unit. Noticed a lot of static even on the local stations that were always clear with the stock radio. Please note that the few (2) HD radio stations that I have in the area did sound quite good. Overall, I'm happy with the unit since I listen mostly to my Ipod which sounds great and I love the Bluetooth operation. Installation was a snap in my F150. Solid Choice

Installed in a 2001 Volkswagen GTI
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this head unit in my '01 VW GTI. Overall I'm very pleased with it.

      pros:

      -iPhone/BT integration is seamless

-button colors and display colors can be matched to your automobile

-sound quality is good- still using factory speakers and amp so really can't say more than this, but it seems capable.

-I very rarely use presets, if at all, so not having dedicated buttons just makes for a cleaner head unit in my case.

-Rear USB is desirable, if you don't want wires running into the front of your new head unit

      cons:

-colors on the display are configurable, as another reviewer mentioned, the teal/green is probably the most visible so I went with that instead of the darker blue that would match my GTI

-menu system takes a while to learn and online user manual isn't well written or descriptive enough

-this is a con of most all aftermarket stereos I believe, but I'll call it out here anyway. The unit has a plastic surround that sits nearly flush with the DIN pocket. However, the (removable) face plate of the stereo extends a good bit beyond this. As a result the whole head unit protrudes outward more than the OEM stereo which sat perfectly flush.

      Other notes:

Steering wheel controls can be preserved with a CONNECTS2 unit, which works beautifully.

I'm very happy with this stereo.. got someone to install it and it looks great! The USB and Aux ports are in the rear so I got them to lead the cables to the middle console and everything looks neat and tidy. The sound is great and so are the features. The bluetooth is awesome.

The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because, like everyone else said, it's hard to see the display in sunlight.

Put this in a 2000 VW Jetta, replacing an Eclipse CD3413. The improvement in sound quality is stunning. The bluetooth audio has worked flawlessly so far, and people have had no complaints on the sound quality of the calls. I have had no issues with direct sun light and not being able to read the screen.

The Crutchfield technical support is amazing. I've had to call them a few times, and they were very responsive and solved the issue for me.

      This receiver is simply outstanding!!!

Written By James, Daphne, AL on Sunday, August 21, 2011

I purchased this receiver yesterday and installed it myself and I am just in awe of it. It looks great and sounds great. I have been a loyal Sony owner, and my last two receivers have been Sony's, but Kenwood has definitely won me over with this unit. It makes my subwoofers kick more and the overall sound quality is better. The settings and features go much more in-depth than other receivers and allows you to take your listening and viewing experience to the next level. The color changing options are just phenomenal. I also like the fact that there are not many buttons on the front of the unit...it gives it a more clean and refined look. For the people who complain about glare and not being able to view it during the day, please learn how to adjust settings. It irritates me that so many people downgrade this unit just because they don't know what they are doing. To solve this, press the MENU button, then go to DISP and ILLUMI, then go to the option of DISP N/P, then set the option to POSI1, and there you have it. It sets the screen to be lit up, and the font to be dark...instead of the other way around. I can easily see my display during the day with this setting. I have an Android phone, and my phone easily synced up with the unit and works great. Overall, this receiver is just amazing and I would definitely recommend it.

For the price this receiver does it all well, and sounds great too. HD Radio in general is disappointing because they seem to compress the bitrate too much and it sounds like poorly streamed music sometimes - they shouldn't be allowed to call it CD quality unless they offer the same bitrate IMO. Anyway that's not the fault of this receiver - HD Radio works great on it. The amp is powerful and sounds great for driving 4 mid-high range speakers with plenty of volume while using the built-in crossover to send bass to a subwoofer amp. There are some quirks that have been mentioned before but they can be worked around - for presets, change seek mode to Auto2 and when you seek it skips to the next preset. The green display color that matches my instrument panel just so happens to be about the brightest color on the display, so I can see it pretty well in daylight. Bluetooth works great but is a little clunky to use - still awesome because it's always connected when you're in the car, and sounds good. Ipod and Pandora integration works really well.

      Kenwood KDC-BT948HD

Installed easily enough into Volvo 850 dash. Sad that the unit's sound, particularly the bass, is much weaker than the OE unit I took out of the car, like it's missing a loudness setting. This even after adjusting the equalizer and bass boost. Not having radio station pre-set buttons to quickly access stations is a bummer. You have to drill through a menu every time you want to access a pre- set station - inconvenient & not well thought out by the designers. HD radio is a very nice feature to have.

Good sound quality (HD radio) and features with this unit. However the main display has a terrible glare to it and no matter what color or contrast you select it is nearly impossible to make out during the day. Pretty sad considering units 1/3 of the cost have displays that are easy to read in any light level. In addition the lack of radio preset buttons makes changing to your favorite radio station extremely annoying. It is also very time consuming as you have to go through several steps in the menu and scroll down options to find and select your presets.

This HU just rocks. The display, features, etc. It sounds fantastic. I'm not an audiophile in the special-interest sense, but I know what I like, and this does it. I preferred a rear USB connection with iPod controls, multi-line display, intuitive menus, Bluetooth built in (not yet tested thoroughly) - this HU met my expectations in all regards so far. I'll update if something changes. HD Radio built in and satellite-ready were simply nice bonuses to me. HD sounds great so far.

Crutchfield staff is amazing. No reason to shop for audio equipment anywhere else.

Great Technical Features / Pour Implementation

Written By Ken D, Cincinnati, OH on Thursday, July 14, 2011
Installed in a 1998 Toyota Camry LE
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The KDC-BT948HD is packed with features, poorly implemented. The bluetooth quality is excellent, the rear-connecting USB keeps clutter away from the front of the unit, full IPOD control, etc. However, I'm going to try to send mine back because: (a) You can't see it in sunlight. Too much glare on the screen, and not nearly bright enough to be seen clearly when there's sun in the car. I did contact Tech Support, and he helped me set it as bright as possible - white - and it still wasn't visible while driving during the day. (b) HD Radio cuts out for a quarter second every fifteen seconds or so (on several of my HD channels). (c) Poor User Interface - having one dial means you've got to click a lot of buttons to accomplish much, which is a lot to ask while driving.
