Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Our take on the JVC KD-S100

by Zak Billmeier

Perform a full audio upgrade in just one step — install JVC's KD-S100 CD receiver, and you'll swear you just added new speakers and a sub, too. It features a one-of-a-kind Bongiovi Acoustics Digital Power Station™ sound processing system, which compensates for your vehicle's sonic shortcomings to improve audio performance dramatically — especially if you still have your factory speakers.

Digital Power Station technology
Legendary sound engineer and music producer Tony Bongiovi developed the Digital Power Station with JVC. The goal — to provide studio-quality sound in any car. It's the product of the extensive research the engineers at Bongiovi Acoustics have performed on the acoustic properties of hundreds of vehicles.

Once activated, the processor optimizes power distribution, extends frequency response, and adds harmonics to maximize speaker performance without straining your system. The result? Big, natural, beautiful sound. With the Digital Power Station engaged, instrument separation becomes more apparent, the soundstage is elevated to an optimum level, and all frequencies are enhanced to give you a truly rich listening experience.

Note: If you have aftermarket speakers, be sure to read the "Bongiovi Acoustics" section in "Hands-on Research" for more detailed info on how the Digital Power Station optimizes sound in your vehicle.

Virtual Subwoofer™
The Digital Power Station enables your speakers to produce maximum bass without distortion so you get the feeling of having a subwoofer, with no additional installation necessary.

Handles all your tunes
Play your MP3 and WMA files you've burned to disc, loaded on a USB flash drive, or copied to an SD™ card. You'll have tunes to spare for your next trip, and you'll see song info on the receiver's display. You'll also appreciate the motorized faceplate. With the touch of a button, it glides down to reveal the CD and SD card slots, then slides smoothly back into place.

Add satellite radio and iPod® control, too
The Bongiovi Digital Power Station applies its magic no matter what source you choose. Add the commercial-free music and endless entertainment of satellite radio, or control your iPod with an optional adapter. Three sets of preamp outputs let you add amps and subs to your system.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

      Features
      External Device Controls

      Features

CEA-2006 Compliant: The specifications given by JVC for the built-in amplifier comply with the CEA-2006 mobile amplifier power testing and measurement standards from the CEA (Consumer Electronics Association). All manufacturers who comply with the standard can display the CEA-2006 logo on their product.

Bongiovi Acoustics: The included Bongiovi Acoustics DPS (Digital Power Station) disc optimizes the KD-S100's output for playback in an automotive environment. DPS is a patented digital processing method that extends the frequency response of the speakers and maximizes the frequency-specific power distribution of the head-unit's amplifier. While it's typically beneficial to replace the speakers and add amplifiers, DPS offers the greatest improvement in sound quality when used with the factory speakers (partly because they have the most room for improvement). The powerful processor also scans, recognizes, and reproduces multiple types of music sources (CD's, MP3 files, vinyl transfers, AM radio, FM radio, satellite radio, WMA files) with full studio quality sound and without volume changes between signal sources. The bass response is noticeably improved by Virtual Subwoofer technology; DPS digitally creates an array of sound that produces a result as if a subwoofer were installed in the vehicle.

MP3/WMA Playback: The KD-S100 can play MP3 and WMA files from CD-R and CD-RW discs, SD memory cards, and USB flash drives.

SD Card: Behind the motorized fold down face is an SD card slot. MP3 and WMA files can be played from an SD card with these requirements:

      • Format: Fat 12 or FAT 16
      • Card Size: 8 MB to 512 MB
      • Bit Rates:
        • MP3: 8-320 kbps
        • WMA: 8-192 kbps
      • Sampling Frequencies:
        • MP3: 16 kHz, 22.05 kHz, 24 kHz, 33 kHz, 44.1 kHz, 48 kHz
        • WMA: 32 kHz, 44.1 kHz, 48 kHz

USB: The KD-S100 has a front panel USB (type A) port. MP3 and WMA files can be played from a USB flash drive with these requirements:

      • Format: Fat 12, FAT 16, or FAT 32
      • Drive Capacity: less than 4 GB (1 partition type)
      • Max Current: 500 mA
      • Bit Rates:
        • MP3: 32-320 kbps
        • WMA: 5-192 kbps
      • Sampling Frequencies: 8 kHz-48 kHz

Disc Protection: If an ejected disc is not removed within 15 seconds, the disc is automatically inserted again into the loading slot to protect it.

Resume: If you change the source from CD, SD card, or USB drive, playback also stops (without ejecting). When you return to that source, playback starts from the point where it stopped previously.

AM/FM Tuner With Title Assignment: The KD-S100 features a built-in AM/FM tuner with three FM bands and one AM band. Each AM/FM band can hold up to six station presets. You can store these presets manually or have the radio store them automatically. You can also assign names (up to 16 characters) for 30 AM/FM station frequencies. If an FM stereo broadcast is hard to receive, you can manually switch the tuner to Mono operation. You can also switch the tuner's IF filter to Wide or Auto to increase/decrease the sensitivity.

Title Assignment: In addition to naming radio frequencies, names can be assigned to 30 CDs (up to 32 characters) and each external component (up to 16 characters).

Amplifier Gain Control: When you are using the KD-S100 with factory speakers (or those rated to less than 50 watts peak), the Amplifier Gain Control can limit the amount of power being sent to those speakers. When the Amp Gain Control is set to Low PWR, the volume control ranges from 0 (minimum) to 30 (maximum). When using speakers rated higher than 50 watts peak, you can set the Amp Gain Control to High PWR, and the volume control will range from 0 to 50. The internal amp can also be turned off when using external amps to power all the speakers in the system.

3 Pair of Preamp Outputs: The KD-S100 is equipped with 2 pair of 5.0V preamp outputs (front/rear), along with a 2.0V subwoofer preamp output. The front and rear preamp outputs allow fader control, while the subwoofer preamp output is non-fading.

Subwoofer Control: The unit's subwoofer preamp output features a low-pass filter with selectable crossover point (31.5 Hz, 40 Hz, 50 Hz, 63 Hz, 80 Hz, 100 Hz, 125 Hz, 160 Hz, or 200 Hz) and slope (6 dB/oct, 12 dB/oct, or 18 dB/oct). The subwoofer output level is variable from 0 to +12.

Auxiliary Input: Stereo RCA jacks are provided on the back of the KD-S100 to allow the connection of an external audio source (portable, video system, etc).

Compatibility with Optional Input Adapter: An optional JVC line input adapter (item numbers 105KSU57 or 257KSU58) may be used to provide an additional auxiliary input on this unit. This feature allows you to connect a portable audio player, such as a portable MP3 player, to this unit as an additional audio source. The adapter connects to the CD changer input on this unit. When the adapter is connected to this unit, a CD changer cannot be connected.

Volume Adjust: The input level of each source (other than FM) is adjustable relative to the FM radio volume, so there isn't a significant volume difference when changing sources. Each source is individually adjustable from -5 to +5.

Detachable Face: This unit features Detachable Face Security. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired. The unit comes with a hard plastic face case to store the receiver's faceplate when detached.

Clock Display: With the ignition off, when you press the display button the clock is displayed for 5 seconds, then turned off.

Display Dimmer: The display dimmer can be set to Off (normal brightness at all times), On (display is always dimmed), Auto (display dims when 12 volts is applied to the illumination lead), or Time Set (program the time range for the dimmer to engage).

Wireless Remote Control: The KD-S100 comes supplied with a wireless remote control (RM-RK300); the remote has Power, Attenuator (mute), Source, Band, Tracking, and Volume functions, plus numeric buttons 1-6.

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The KD-S100 has a steering wheel remote input on the back panel. When used with the optional PAC SWI-JACK interface (item number 127SWIJACK), you can retain the use of your steering wheel and/or rear seat radio controls when replacing the factory head unit in select vehicles. The SWI-JACK is compatible with over 95% of the vehicles made from 1986 to the present. Compatible vehicles include many Acura, Audi, BMW, Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge, Ford, GMC, Honda, Hummer, Infiniti, Isuzu, Jaguar, Jeep, Kia, Land Rover, Lexus, Lincoln, Mazda, Mercury, Mini, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Oldsmobile, Plymouth, Pontiac, Saab, Saturn, Suzuki, Toyota, and Volkswagen vehicles and Harley Davidson motorcycles. Please consult the Crutchfield Vehicle Selector to confirm compatibility with your vehicle.

      External Device Controls

iPod: The KD-S100 is compatible with the optional KS-PD100 iPod adapter (item number 257KSPD100, sold separately). When the KS-PD100 is added the KD-S100 is compatible with most iPods that have a dock connector, including the 3rd generation iPod, 4th generation iPod, 5th generation iPod, iPod mini, iPod classic (80, 120, 160GB), and iPod nano (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th generation). When connected, the iPod is controlled and charged by the KD-S100 through the iPod adapter (with the exception of the 4th generation iPod nano as noted below).

Note: The KS-PD100 is not compatible with the iPod touch (1st or 2nd generation) or iPhone/iPhone 3G. This iPod interface will also not charge the iPod nano (4th generation) without the Scosche passPORT (142IFWA).

Satellite Radio Ready: There are several options for connecting an optional XM or SIRIUS Satellite Radio receiver to this receiver:

      • XM Satellite Radio: To receive XM Satellite Radio, you can connect the optional CNP2000UC XM Mini Tuner and the JVC CNP-JVC1 adapter cable (package item number 700XMJVC1).
      • SIRIUS: The JVC KD-S100 is compatible with the SiriusConnect Universal Tuner and Plug & Play Dock:
        • SiriusConnect Tuner: Connect the optional SC-C1 SiriusConnect vehicle tuner using the JVC KS-SRA100 adapter (package item number 700SIRJVC1).
        • SiriusConnect Dock: Select dock-and-play and portable SIRIUS radios can be controlled using the JVC KS-SRA100 SIRIUS adapter (item number 105KSRA100) and the SC-VDOC1 dock (item number 607SCVDOC1).
      • Auxiliary Input: A portable satellite radio receiver, such as the XM Delphi SkyFi3 or SIRIUS Sportster, can be connected to the head unit via the rear panel auxiliary input or a JVC auxiliary input adapter, such as the KS-U57 or KS-U58 (item numbers 105KSU57 and 257KSU58).
Note: A subscription is also required to receive satellite radio programming from SIRIUS or XM.

CD Changer Controls: This unit is directly compatible with JVC CD changers. When connected to a CD Text capable changer, this unit can display disc and track titles for discs encoded with that information.

      Poor detachable face design

Written By radioBuddy, Fremont, CA on Tuesday, May 08, 2012

Poor detachable face design, deck gets hot, but sound quality isn't bad; just limited in EQ control.
      Pros:
      Nice sound quality.
      Cons:
Not enough EQ options/control; especially for sub-woofer. The plastic tab behind the detachable face will eventually break off or wear down, and the unit will be unusable. Mine lasted 2 months before it broke. I only remove the face 2x a day; once when I get to work and another when I get home from work.

ive had this stereo for about 1 year now and id have to say its really nice compared to my silverado factory stereo. great value at the price i paid for it at Crutchfield.com but i never would think it would be worth the 600 dollars as the supposed MSRP value of it. using a usb flash drive and SD card for addition storage is really nice. wish i woulda got one that had bluetooth though

While the Bongiovi Acoustic processor is wonderful, the fact that you have to purchase $80 adapters to connect anything to the unit (even a line in) is ridiculous! I purchased the unit and the iPod adapter...it doesn't support iPhones! The Virtual Bass feature is a joke and the menu is nearly impossible to navigate. If you want pretty good sound with a bunch of other lame features, buy it!

I installed this a few months ago on a 97 Sentra. I was amazed by the sound difference that it made, considering that the original speakers were already torn apart. This head unit sounded even better after replacing the stock speakers.

      Where's the bass?

Written By Gregg, Boston, MA on Tuesday, January 26, 2010
Installed in a 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this deck a couple of weeks ago in my 03 Grand Cherokee. I gotta say that
the highs and mids sound amazing, the sounds come through strong without hurting
your ears. But I'm noticing a lack of bass from this system. I loaded the CD that came
with it and expected to be wowed by the bass, but no, this wasn't the case. In order to
get an acceptable level of bass I have the treble to -2 and the bass to the max. But it's
still weak at low to medium volumes. The stock deck produced way more bass out of
the same speakers; that's my baseline for comparison.

Reading the reviews brought me to the bongiovi website, I see that they released 6 other
vehicle maps. My next step is to try each of these out, hopefully one of these will correct
the bass issue. ... and then I'll give this deck 5 stars.

BTW, I'm using aftermarket 6x9s in the front doors, stock tweeters in the dash, and stock
rear speakers, all running off the stock infinity amp.

I could not ask for more in a CD receiver. The Bongiovi system is spectacular. Along with new speakers, what a difference this makes in a 95 Sable with 48,000 mi. on it.

      Not impressed at all

Written By Ryan from Ohio, Elmore, OH on Saturday, January 16, 2010
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

      Im not impressed at all.

First and foremost Im into car audio, so Im the type of user with the volume up high, like to be able to control sound, add amps/speakers. I have used much equipment- Pioneer, Alpine, Clarion, and JVC and I like JVC head units but this one is terrible.

The unit DOES sound good at low to moderate volumes. However it breaks apart horrible at higher volume settings. There is absolutely NO control over the EQing of the unit. Just standard Bass/Treble in which I have to set the bass to -10 and treble to 1 to even use it...

With the Bogiovi off it sounds hollow, lifeless and almost out of phase. Which is NOT normal. I believe its been altered for a "wow" factor when you turn the DPS on...

This unit was a direct swap out from a JVC AVX11- and Im going to put my old unit back in. I despise this unit so much Im returning it... Which is rare for me to do....

This unit WOULD be good for someone who doesnt intend on amplifying cabin speakers AND doesnt listen to their music loud. However it fails at everything exceeding that.

Pretty Good, About to be even BETTER!

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just installed the radio last night and it sounds pretty darn good. Night and day verses the stock radio in my 2008 Corolla. There are Beta profiles available at the Bongiovi website that let you customize the sound profile for your car. I found the "small car" variation to sound better than what was on the Crutchfield CD. This is definitely a "bang-for-your-buck" product.

It looks like Bongiovi Acoustics will release custom profiles specific to your vehicle (just like was released when people bought the radio as a dealer option!!) if they are able to get 100 people to register for their forum. If you own this radio you should navigate to Bongiovi site and sign up so everyone can enjoy the radio the way that Bongiovi originally intended you to!

Just OK - not bad and not exceptional

Written By Timothy, SW Virginia on Monday, January 11, 2010

As others have stated, the Bongiovi is over rated, mainly because its sold as being able to adapt to your car. This however couldn't happen with my car because the included CD that was suppose to allow customization didn't even work. The stereo plays fine and the radio reception is acceptable, there are a few flaws. The SD card is extremely picky about brand and size. Official supported size is something like 512 mb, although online support says up to 2GB MIGHT work. However the USB port works fantastic.
As for the Bongiovo feature goes for sound, it definetly increases the highs, but does nothing for the bass. The worst part is that there is no override feature that allows you to customize the eq, well actaully there is no eq period. You either have Bongiovi on or off and thats it.
There is no quick select buttons for radion stations, you have to use the remote only and that takes some change in the usual way you operated an in car radio, but its not a biggie for me. The sportster Sirius unit plugs directly into the back and the line in feature is used to listen to SAT audio. There is an aux port for ipod, or you can purchase a seperate adapter to plug in to the CD changer control if you want the head unit to control your ipod. The motorized faceplate is a nice feature but I am sure it will wear out just like my SH-99 did. I love JVC products and they perform as well as any other product.

Great for the price, but only OK overall

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This stereo suffers from great features, but poor implementation. The buttons are tiny. The UI is not intuitive, and the BonGiovi is overrated. The sound enhancement is basically nothing more than the Bass Boost buttons that have been around forever. Sound with BonGiovi is OK, but bass reproduction sound fake and overdone. No way to customize levels other than with the Bongiovi.

In very cold weather, you should remove a USB drive before powering up the unit, then reinsert it after it warms up a few degrees... Mine froze up the other morning, and I had to turn the car off and back on after 10 minutes to get the unit to reset and come to life.

Those are the negatives. Positives are that it does have good sound, decent power, great features, and is CHEAP! I'm definitely happy with the unit for the price. It went in my new(ish) Ford F250 that only had AM/FM, and is definitely an upgrade. The supplied adapter kit didn't fit very well, and 'cups' on one edge for a less than perfect fit.... but I ended up with an adapter kit, harness and head unit for a great price. The truck is a work truck, and will never be in a show - so it's good enough for the implementaion.

Not a $500.00 stereo but a great deal

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sounds great but a little more base would be nice. The installation went great thanks to the Excellent instructions supplied by Crutchfield. My 8 year old son did the whole installation He took the dash trim out, removed the old unit then soldered wires on the adapter plug to the supplied wireing supplied with the deck and put the new one in. Dont even think about paying some big box store $60.00 plus parts to install your deck. I must admit my 8 year old knows more about electronics than me but the documentation supplied by Crutchfield makes it so simple. I would not pay $500.00 for this deck but Its comperable to a $200 to $250 deck and is a bargain at this price. Crutchfield is the place to buy because they supply all of the adaptors, trim pieces and excellent installation instructions.

I purchased this unit to replace the stock JBL receiver in my 02 Camry. It definately brings the factory speakers to life but seems to be lacking a bit at lower volumes. As you turn it up (with the Bongiovi activated) it sounds good, just the opposite of the factory unit.
I do notice the heat issue previously mentioned.
The remote is fine but the settings on the unit are not very user friendly.
The USB port is great, a thumb drive is all you need.
Overall it is a pretty good unit and I am pleased with the sound.
For the price, it would be hard to beat but the original 600+ dollar listing, no way.
All in all it is a nice, inexpensive upgrade.

GREAT deal, but don't buy this for the SD feature!

      Installed in a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Stereo replaced factory equipment in a 2000 Chevy Silverado. With kit and
instructions, I got the old stereo out and this one installed in less than 15
      minutes. Quick and easy.

Stereo sounds AWESOME through my 6 1/2" Alpines. Bass is clean and sharp, as
are the mids and highs. Nice high-end sound. USB thumbdrive feature is
      wonderful and works flawlessly.

SD slot will not recognize SDHC and, as stated in the manual, will recognize no
more than 255 files. I bought a 2GB card and put 233 songs on it. It refused
to recognize one of the 8 folders I created, so I moved the files from that
folder into one of the other ones and deleted it. Then tested again and halfway
through playing my 5th folder, the stereo displayed "read problems" and failed
back to radio. I'm THOROUGHLY disappointed in what should have been a unique
feature to set this stereo apart.

Put simply, there are plenty of great features in this stereo, including its
power and precision sound, but don't buy it for its terrible SD feature-- As a
matter of fact, this feature is so poor, I wouldn't advertise it even exists.
Thankfully, the other features more than make up for it, and at this price...
      What a deal!

      KD-S100

Written By Jasper7788, Stroudsburg, PA on Wednesday, December 30, 2009

Found this radio in the Crutchfield catalog and after comparing it to several others I decided that this was the ONE!!! Got the radio for Christmas. The install was simple and after installing the included CD software the sound was completely incredible on the stock factory speakers of my 2003 Nissan Altima. I wouldn't want to give this head unit up for anything except one thing, so onto the reason for my 3 star rating. The reason I picked this radio was because my stock radio did not have the capability of playing my iPod touch. The radio came but the iPod adapter was back ordered so I went ahead and installed the unit while I waited. It was then that I found out that this radio even with the iPod adapter IS NOT COMPATIBLE with the iPod Touch or iPhone. This was such a disappointment for such a high quality radio. More of the disappointment came because my wife told the Crutchfield rep that she was purchasing it for use with an iPod touch and nobody told her that it would not work. You can only find out that it won't work by going to the actual iPod adapter page and then clicking on the hands on research page. So unfortunately, even though this is an outstanding radio with phenomenal features and sound I have to say that I am disappointed that it lacks the support for the iPod Touch and iPhone. Keep that in mind when ordering this product. Otherwise it is excellent as far as sound and quality.

Purchased this because I could not walk away from this deal. Installed this into a 1991 LTD Crown Vic that was an ex-cop car. Matched it with Polk Momo 650's in the front and Polk Momo 690's in the rear. Wow! This is an amazing set up in this boat of a car. I figured with all the plush interior components, it would be good sound proofing for the expensive speakers and quite unique Bongiovi Accoustic radio. I was pleasantly surprised with the studio sounds of this combo. If you like big high's, then this radio is the ticket when you actuate the B button it boosts your sound by about 10 with crystal clearity! When you do not use the Bongiovi boost button, the radio is quite flat, so I highly recommend you always playing radio and CD's with this option. For the price, you will get quite the kick out of doing so well for the money. Get one of these while you can, they use to cost in the neighborhood of $ 650.00.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have been using this unit for about a month now. It sounds great. I have bought many head units over the years, many different brands and each sounded very good. But this is the best sounding unit I ever had and the price is great. I do miss having the radio buttons on the unit but I like using the remote even better. I have read reviews about lack of bass but if you crank the volume up you can really feel the bass. I replaced my speakers with 6 1/2" Rockford Fosgates in the front and 6X9 Alpines in the rear. I just love riding around with the volume cranked up. It doesn't have ipod control built in but then I don't want that anyway. It also doesn't have HD radio built in either but that's ok too. For this price in my opinion this JVC is a steal. The Bonjiovi is the iceing on the cake....One last thing. I never buy my units from anyone but Crutchfield. They have the best costumer service I have ever seen so I keep coming back.
