My system has plenty of power. Who needs an amp?

You might think you don't need an amp because you have a 400-watt system in your car, or because your new stereo puts out 50 watts a channel. But those are peak wattage ratings, which may boil down to 15 or 20 watts per channel, using the more realistic RMS rating. An amp sends your speakers the power they need to deliver your music with clarity and impact, whether you're using factory speakers or high-performance components. And low-frequency reproduction requires lots of power, so an amp is an absolute must if you're adding a sub to your system.

Our take on the Kicker 11DX250.1

by Ken Nail

You want power for your subs. But Kicker DX amplifiers give you something extra — clean power. Kicker's FIT™ — Fail-Safe Integration Technology — rejects noise from alternators, audio/video gear, and other car electronics for crisp, clean operation. An inexpensive optional adapter lets this amplifier accept output from factory radios too, so you can hook up the DX250.1 to almost any car.

Delivers up to 250 watts
The DX250.1 mono amp sends 250 watts RMS to your 2-ohm sub, or 140 watts to a 4-ohm sub. The built-in low-pass filter sends only the notes below 80 Hz to your sub, while the subsonic filter removes the super-low frequencies that your sub can't play. A bass boost lets you add some extra bump in your music, and you can add an optional remote bass boost for driver's seat control. You'll also find the set of preamp outputs handy for getting signal to another amp in your system.

Team this amp with Kicker subs and save
Take away the worry of picking the right subs. This Kicker bass package adds a pair of 12" Comp Kicker subs to the amp, while this bass package adds a single 12" Comp sub.

CEA-2006 Compliant: CEA-2006 is a system of testing and measurement methods for mobile audio amplifiers. This voluntary standard advocates a uniform method for determining an amplifier's RMS power output and signal-to-noise ratio. The criteria for measuring power uses a DC input voltage of 14.4 volts and the RMS power output is measured over the full frequency range of the amp with 1% or less Total Harmonic Distortion plus noise (THD+N). Signal-to-Noise ratio is measured in weighted absolute decibels at a reference of 1 watt. CEA-2006 allows consumers to compare car amplifiers and receivers on equal footing. Measured under CEA-2006 conditions the Kicker DX250.1 is rated at 140 watts RMS x 1 channel into a 4-ohm load and the signal to noise ratio is 75 dB. Additional specs listed in the manual (but not listed as CEA-2006 compliant) include 250 watts RMS x 1 channel into a 2-ohm load (measured using a 14.4 volt power supply with no more than 1% THD+N) and 95 dB signal-to-noise ratio (measured at the rated power output).

Kicker Livin' Loud Certified Power: The amplifier comes with a certificate that indicates the total maximum wattage measured from the amplifier in the box, along with the model number, serial number, test date, and whether the amplifier passed the total harmonic distortion, signal-to-noise ratio, and protection circuit tests.

Auto Turn-On: The Auto Turn-On switch offers three options:

  • +12 V: the amp turns on when +12 volts is applied to the remote terminal
  • DC Offset: the amp turns on when a 6 volt surge is detected on the signal inputs (from a speaker-level source)
  • Audio: the amp turns on when an incoming audio signal is detected

Protection Circuitry: The DX250.1 has protection circuitry that will turn the amp off in the event of overheating, over voltage (over 16 volt input), under voltage (under 10 volt input), and short circuit (speaker output). If the Protection LED on the left side of the amp illuminates red, the protection circuit has engaged and the amp will not play until the problem is resolved.

Speaker-level Input: High-level inputs can be used when the source device doesn't have preamp level outputs. The same RCA inputs on the amp are used for either speaker-level or line-level connections. When a speaker-level signal is used, a speaker wire to RCA adapter is needed (item number 20609ZiSL, sold separately) and the Input Level switch should be set to High.

Fail-Safe Integration Technology (FIT): FIT utilizes isolated differential inputs, rejecting noise and electrical interference for the quietest operation possible. FIT also allows Kicker amps to accept output from nearly any factory or aftermarket head unit.

Controls

Auto Turn-On: Three position switch; choose +12 V, DC Offset, or Audio.

Input Level: Set the two position switch to High (for speaker level) or Low (for line level).

Gain: The input gain is continuously variable, labeled 0 to 11. The gain range is governed by the input level switch; 250mV to 10V for speaker level and 125mV to 5V for line level.

Bass Boost: The bass boost circuit provides a 9 dB signal boost centered at 40 Hz; the bass boost is manually turned on or off.

Subsonic Filter: Frequencies that cannot be reproduced by the subwoofer do not become sound, but unnecessary oscillations causing distortion; these frequencies also waste amplifier power and can damage speakers. The subsonic filter removes inaudible frequencies to improve the performance of the speakers by eliminating this harmful distortion. The 24 dB/octave subsonic filter's crossover point is 25 Hz.

Crossover: The internal low pass crossover is always active (it cannot be bypassed). The crossover point is 80 Hz and the slope is 24 dB/octave.

Connections

Left Side of Amplifier:

  • +12V (power): screw terminal; accepts spade connector up to 0.5" wide
  • REM (remote turn-on): screw terminal; accepts spade connector up to 0.33" wide
  • GND (ground): screw terminal; accepts spade connector up to 0.5" wide
  • Speaker Outputs: screw terminals; accept spade connectors up to 0.32" wide; there are terminals for two subwoofers, internally shorted together
  • Fuses: two 15-amp ATO fuses

Right Side of Amplifier:

  • RCA Inputs: one pair of gold-plated RCA jacks, used for line level or speaker level inputs
  • RCA Outputs: one pair of gold-plated RCA outputs; useful for adding another amp
  • Remote Bass: RJ-25 jack (phone type plug) for use with the an optional ZXRC remote bass level control

Its a very nice amp with great features and no clipping. Sounds great and clear.

Good Stuff

Written By Jjkinsd, San Marcos, CA on Wednesday, May 16, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought on recommendation from Crutchfield advisor to match up with a single Kenwood shallow mount 150w 8" sub. It's been only 3 weeks but so far I am pleased with the matchup. This a simple amp, no xover settings (built in 80hz lp) just power gain and a bass boost option (great for some stuff, over powering for other) I may opt to get the remote bass control (not offered at Crutchfield?) for a little more control (I listen to a wide variety of music). I can see the potential, as other reviewers have said, for this thing to run warm. I have it under the driver seat, with ample air space beneath it and I believe this will work just fine. I am still dealing with overall fine tuning of the complete system but currently have the gain set to close to max and I am getting solid distortion free sound to the sub.
Pros:
Simple setup. Turn on options. Extra terminals for paralell setups.
Cons:
None

Kicker 11DX250.1

Written By Austin D, Memphis TN on Monday, April 02, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Beautiful sounding amp. Especially for the size and the price. For a struggling college student, this was definitely a good purchase and should last me well until I'm able to afford a more powerful system.
Pros:
Low price. High Quality.
Cons:
No filter adjustments and the gain control knob is sold separately. And honestly I wouldn't mind getting a decal with the amp. Just saying.

Its ight

Written By Kickeramp, Cailfornia on Sunday, March 04, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It's pretty cheap which is good and pushes my 12'' kicker comp , but if you wanna upgrade to a heavier subwoofer then you would need more power. I like the bass boost knob and the low input setting, but the gain control needs to be adjusted with a screwdriver which is fine, but I like to adjust my bass while I am driving. This is an easy fix if you have the gain control remote, but that remote is sold sepratley.
Pros:
Cheap and quality
Cons:
Not much power

OK, BUT......

Written By Dave, PA on Saturday, February 11, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This amp performs well for the money. The reason I gave it only 2 stars is that the instructions and manual suck. It is a mono Subwoofer amp and there is NO I REPEAT NO instructions on hooking it up to the sub. There are 2 channels on this amp like any other amp. I have no idea if I am losing power due to incomplete instructions. Let me be clear, I have been hooking up car stereos for over ten years, I know what I'm doing. But to have an amp that you pay good money for from a known brand, the least they could do is provide specific instructions on it.
Pros:
Good price for this brand
Cons:
Horrible instructions.

Simple

Written By Nathan, Elk Grove, CA on Thursday, February 02, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Not a bad starter amp, very little controls besides gain and a bass boost. Its a simple mono amplifier with 250 watts of pushing power. I have it hooked up to a single sony explod 12" which seems to be a little bit too much for this little amp to handle, but it still does push it decently. Its probably best with a smaller 8"-10" bass tube or sub. I recommend this amp if you need a little extra "kick" in the low notes of your sound system, just don't expect to knock the mirrors off with this amp. It does however get VERY HOT if you leave it sitting on the carpet or an area with poor airflow. I got a couple 1X2 planks, painted them black to match my carpet and bolted the amp to that so there is an air gap under the amp, it stays much cooler now. I also had a hard time getting it to turn on using the other modes, it would only turn on using a REM wire hooked up to a 12V switched power source behind the head unit.
Pros:
Build quality, price, simplicity
Cons:
Power output, gets very hot if you don't give it a small gap of air to run under it, tempermental with the auto turn on, only worked with REM wire.

Great amp for my application

Written By Smith, Kent, OH on Saturday, January 28, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed this in my 91 Miata with 8 inch Kicker subwoofer and Clarion head unit. Much better sound then I anticipated. This was a parcel shelf installation with the amp mounted in the trunk. I previously replaced the factory speakers with little improvement. This current upgrade was much more impressive
Pros:
Price and quality
Cons:
limited adjustments
