Niles Audio

Our take on the Niles EVC-100

by Amanda P.

The EVC-100 electronic volume control offers push-button operation of your multi-room audio system, as well as handy features that help protect your gear. Impedance magnification allows you to connect up to eight pairs of speakers to a receiver or amplifier. And the built-in IR (infrared) sensor lets you select components, skip CD tracks, and more from secondary listening rooms.

Safely connect multiple pairs of speakers
If you use the EVC-100 throughout your multi-room setup, or another volume control with impedance magnification, you can connect up to eight pairs of speakers to your amplifier or receiver. This feature is great for anyone who wants to power speakers in multiple rooms, or for folks who plan to expand their system in the future. If you have a 4 ohm amp, you can connect up to eight pairs of 8-ohm speakers or four pairs of 4 ohm speakers. If you have an 8 ohm amp, you can connect up to four pairs of 8 ohm speakers or two pairs of 4 ohm speakers.

More control in your secondary rooms
The EVC-100's built-in IR sensor can provide easy operation of your A/V system from secondary listening rooms. Using your main system's remote, or another universal remote, you can select different audio sources and control playback. For example, turn on your CD changer, and skip ahead to the disc or track you want to hear. Then switch to your receiver's tuner, and dial in your favorite station.

In order to control your main system, you'll need to install CAT-5 cable along with your in-wall speaker wire. You'll also need an IR system hub and one or more IR flashers to pass your commands on to your main A/V system.

  • pushbutton electronic control
  • built-in IR sensor (requires installation of CAT-5 cable)

    Features

Overview: The Niles EVC-100 is a wall-mount, infrared-sensing, push button-style, stereo loudspeaker electronic volume control with muting and impedance magnifying all in a single component. It is designed to provide volume control of a loudspeaker pair (including muting and un-muting functions) and IR control of your AV system from a remote location.

Universal Impedance-Magnifying Design: The universal impedance magnifying design enables the EVC-100 to act as both a stereo and an impedance-magnifying volume control. The EVC-100 has a loudspeaker impedance magnification factor of one, two or four times.

Speaker Compatibility: The EVC-100 can be used with 4, 6 or 8 ohm speaker systems.

Autoformers: Precision autoformers provide superior sonic performance, exceeding the audio quality of non-impedance magnifying volume controls by virtually allowing no internal power to be wasted as heat.

12-Position Control: The volume control features a 12-position adjustment range regardless of how much impedance magnification is used.

Default Volume: The EVC-100's Default Volume feature guards against high-volume un-mutes. The default volume is set to 6 from the factory but can be changed to any of the 12 volume positions.

Sleep Mode: The EVC-100 can be automatically set to mute itself after an elapsed period of time of 10 or 30 minutes or 1 or 2 hours. During sleep time the Power Sense LED will blink every second to indicate the mode is active.

Status Detection Circuits: The EVC-100 is equipped with status detection circuits that monitor the absence of voltage for automatic mute control when a zone or system is first turned on.

Isolated Grounding: The volume control features isolated left and right channel grounds to ensure safety with any amplifier you are using.

UL Rated: The volume control is UL-rated so it complies with all local building codes.

Override Function: The override function allows page/doorbell signals to override the music at a preset level, even with the volume turned all they way down in a mute state.

Remote Control: The EVC-100 comes supplied with an IR wireless remote control that provides volume control and mute functions.

Decorative Wall-plate: The unit comes supplied with a white or black decorative wall plate that is held in place by 2 screws.

Speaker Selector Systems: The EVC-100 can be used with a central control speaker selector unit. It is recommended you use a selector box that has a defeatable protection circuit to avoid volume loss such as the Niles HPS4, HPS6, SS-4 or SS-6.

IR Repeater System Compatibility: The EVC-100 is compatible with all Niles infrared systems. It can be used along with, or as an alternative to the Nile TS100, WS100, MS100, MS200, and CS100 IR sensors.

    Installation Considerations

Junction Boxes: The mounting depth of the EVC-100 is 2-9/16". When installed, the unit extends 2-1/16" behind the sheetrock (assuming 1/2" sheetrock). For installation, you must use a standard 18 cubic inch or larger junction box.

Speaker Wire: The EVC-100 will accept stranded copper wire up to 14-gauge. Larger (lower gauge) wire is not recommended, as it will not fit into the connectors. Solid-core, aluminum, or "Romex" wire is not recommended. Most states require in-wall speaker wire to have a specific "CL" fire rating. 16-guage speaker wire can be used for runs less than 80 feet while 14-guage wire is recommended for wire runs over 80 feet.

Power/Control Wire: The EVC-100 requires a CAT-5 data cable to receive 12 Vdc Power and Override, Status, IR In, and IR Out control signals at its RJ45 connector. For best results, use a high-quality, shielded data cable for this connection.

Mounting Location: You can install the EVC-100 in just about any location where in-wall space exists, though it should not be installed into a junction box with 110 volt devices, such as light switches or dimmers. Speaker wire can act as an antenna for electrical noise, and locating speaker wire too close to a light switch or dimmer may cause the speakers to emit a popping or buzzing sound.

Magnification Settings: Magnification settings will vary depending on your Amplifier's minimum ohm load and the number of speakers in your setup.

    Does Not Like Fluorescent Lights

Written By Joe B, Richfield, UT on Saturday, March 03, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this unit in a commercial office to control one background music/PA speaker. Initially it would not respond to the remote control. I finally figured out that the unit was being jammed by the fluorescent lights in the office. Turn off the lights and it works great. Called Niles and they sell a filter package for $1.50 to solve the problem. I wish they would raise the price of the unit and include the filters. Would have saved me a lot of headaches.

    Niles EVC-100

Written By DJS, Pittsburgh, PA on Monday, February 28, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Unit works great, but like the previous review says, the remote that comes with it is
basically worthless - broke apart in my hand just trying to install the battery. I know
Crutchfield would replace it immediately, but it's not really necessary, depending on your
needs. When used in conjunction with the Niles MSU140 & Niles IRB1, the IR pass-
through function works great - perfect when you need to change the channel on the radio
or adjust the volume in a different room, etc.
When installing, the components of the volume control take up the entire single-
gang "area" of the junction box, so make sure you have plenty of room before you start
cutting holes in the dry wall.

    Great unit, terrible install instructions

Written By Chris, Fort Worth, TX on Sunday, March 01, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The unit itself works great, but the little remote that comes with the unit and only controls the volume on the unit itself has never worked. All of my component remotes work great with the IR sensor that is built into the unit. Crutchfield has offered to send new units to try to rectify the remote problem, but I had no intention to use the little remotes anyway.

I purchased two units that are controlling two different zones in my house. My house was prewired with Cat5e and all the speaker wiring that I was going to need to run all of my zones and my home theater. With everything considered the install was very easy. The install problems I did have had to do with the wiring to the Niles MSU250 unit that supplies the power to the wall unit and receives the IR signals from the wall unit. Please know that the install directions in both the wall unit and the MSU250 are very vague when it comes to which Cat5 wires to use. For your knowledge during your install use the color wires that represent pin #'s 2,6,7,8 on the RJ45 plug wiring for the IR (data), V+ (+12V), G (Gnd) and ST (Status) respectfully.

Again the units have worked great and I am glad I went with the electronic controls versus the dial controls.
