Meticulous engineering and high-quality construction are the hallmarks of Marantz receivers. The SR4023 starts with a front panel made of fiberglass-reinforced aluminum. This advanced composite material helps shield internal circuitry from performance-robbing interference and vibration. Flexible connections
The receiver's back panel offers enough inputs to hook up a total of eight components, including a turntable, and four audio/video components.     Product Overview:

    Overview: The Marantz SR4023 Stereo Receiver boasts 80 watts of continuous output from each channel and includes video switching capability to fully integrate a 2.0 home entertainment system that includes both audio and video sources. From its two sets of loudspeaker outputs, to its preamp output/main amp input jacks, the SR4023 is built to support a wide variety of system configurations. The Marantz stereo receiver can be used as a home theater 2.0 system, a secondary zone, or a main music system. There is a front panel infrared sensor and three pre-programmed code sets that make the receiver well-suited for remote zone use.

    Front Panel Design: The receiver's front panel features an aluminum extrusion which shields internal circuitry and absorbs internal and external resonances.

    Front Panel Lock: You can lock all the controls on the front panel of the unit, accept for the Power button, to prevent anyone else from changing the settings on your receiver.

    Dimmer: The unit's front-panel display can be dimmed or turned completely off.

    Sleep Timer: The receiver offers a Sleep Timer which will automatically turn the unit off after 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100, 110, or 120 minutes.

    Memory Backup: This unit is equipped with a backup function to prevent memory data such as the preset memory from being erased.

    Audio Features

    Amplifier Section: The Marantz SR4023 features a high quality full discrete stereo power amplifier rated at 80 watts x 2 channel in 8-ohms at 20Hz to 20,000Hz with 0.08% THD.

    Note: The manual incorrectly states amplifier rating frequency range of 40Hz to 20,000Hz.

    AM/FM Tuner: The Marantz SR4023 features a built-in AM/FM tuner which can automatically or manually store up to 50 AM/FM presets that can be labeled and viewed in a channel list.

    Source Direct: You can bypass the tone control circuit of the receiver and route the audio signal directly to provide the purest sound quality.

    Bass And Treble: The SR4023 offers separate Bass and Treble controls to increase or decrease the low and high frequencies of your music.

    Mute: This feature temporarily silences all speaker outputs and the headphone output of the receiver but will not affect any recording or dubbing through the unit.

    Audio Inputs: There are 8 stereo audio RCA inputs (4 of which are linked to video inputs) and 3 stereo audio RCA outputs (1 of which is linked to a video output).

    Note: One of the stereo audio inputs is a Phono input which also features a ground terminal.

    Main In Jacks: The receiver features a pair of RCA jacks for connecting an external pre-amplifier so you can use this unit as a power amplifier.

    Preamp Output Jacks: The receiver is equipped with a stereo RCA preamp output for connecting an external power amplifier to the SR4023 so you can use the SR4023 as a preamplifier.

    Subwoofer Preamp Output: The receiver features a mono-RCA jack for connecting a powered subwoofer.

    Speaker Terminals: The SR4023 has binding post speaker terminals for the receiver A and B channels. The binding posts can accept bare wire, pin connectors, and single banana plugs. The terminals are spaced too far apart for dual banana plugs. The collar surrounding the binding post terminals prevent the use of spade connectors.

    Headphone Output: The receiver features a 1/4" stereo headphone jack on its front panel for connecting a pair of optional headphones. The unit's speakers will automatically be turned off when a set of headphones are connected.

    Video Features

    Video Inputs/Output: The SR4023 features 4 composite video inputs (DVD, DSS, AUX, VCR) and video output (VCR). The video output can be used to connected a video tape recorder for making recordings through the receiver.

    Monitor Output: The Marantz SR4023 is equipped with a composite video monitor output to connect the receiver to your television.

    Remote Control

    Remote Control: The supplied remote control contains 3 sets of remote control codes and can be used to control up to 3 receivers in one location.

    Flasher In: This 3.5mm input is used to control the SR4023 from an external key-pad (sold separately).

    Remote In/Out: These RCA input/output connectors allow you to connect the SR4023 to a Marantz component equipped with remote control (RC-5) terminals.

    RS-232C: The RS-232C port is to be used in conjunction with an external controller to control the operation of the unit by using an external device.

    The Marantz name impressed me, though my audio electronics repairman friend said my old Pioneer would outlast it. If it lasts as long as my old Pioneer, it will outlast me. Performance is excellent, except for FM reception which is a little weak with the included antenna. The controls are a bit arcane, and the reliance on the remote control, belies the otherwise simple design. the source selection via a knob is counter-intuitive and the stops are too shallow to feel easily. I like the clean all black look, no hokey brushed plastium panels.

    Nice to have a music around the house again.

    I purchased the Marantz SR4023 after I took to time to build some great stereo speakers (like the ones I remember but they don't build anymore) and wanted a quality reciever with ample power. I remembered my brothers' 60 watt Marantz back in the late '70s and felt comfortable ordering this model. I was very impressed with the quick 2 day delivery and couldn't unpack it fast enough. After I hooked everything up and powered the system on I was rewarded with that nice Marantz amp warmth. I am lucky enough to work from home so I get to run the receiver all day long. Even running hard for several CDs I find that it runs pretty cool in the cabinet I house it in. Like another reviewer I initally had a problem getting any real "THUMP" out of my speakers while playing CDs. I was using my BlueRay player hooked thru the DVD input and when I was hooking up a turn table I decided to move the BlueRay to the CD input and WOW! That's what they don't tell you. If the input is designated for A/V it is equalized differently from the other audio inputs (I suspect to help thorw the voice frequencies out front). I orederd a multi CD player from Crutchfield to dedicate to CDs. The radio receives very well as we are in a lower area, even with the string antena. The volume control took some getting used to but overall I love this receiver.
    Pros:
    It's a Marantz, nice "heft" to it, good radio reception, Fills my house with music again.
    Cons:
    Cannot control the Bass or Treble from the main unit, only from the remote.

    Clean Sound

    Purchased to replace/upgrade my Harmon Kardon 3480 Receiver. Man, what a difference! Very clean sound emerged immediately with no distortion. Now, part of the credit probably has to go to the speakers, too. I also just replaced Bose 901's with PSB Image 6's. Not that the 901's are a bad speaker, I just don't have the right room dimensions. The PSB's did not sound good with the 3480 - very muddy at moderate to high volume. I have not tried the 901's with the Marantz, but am betting they would sound better, too, just limited by the unusual room acoustics. So, the 4023 with good speakers sounds amazing. I heard things I never heard before while playing Led Zep's Zoso album on my Technics 1210. Pushed the system to -10 dB, no distortion, very clean mid-range, crisp highs, and with a subwoofer engaged, the lows rocked. The real star was the mid-range, which in the past I have hated so much I had to use an Equalizer to downplay those frequencies. I am happy to say I no longer have a need for an equalizer. The Marantz gives up 40 watts/channel to the HK, but as I've been told for years, there is a big difference in "watts" and "true watts." This Marantz, although it is not a Reference Series amp, is a serious improvement in sound quality.
    Pros:
    Clean Sound across all frequencies - No distortion Automatic source switching - CDR/Mini-Disc/Open Reel can all record off source without tape monitor button engaged
    Cons:
    Runs hot when pushed - needs good ventilation Wish it would come in a 70's Stainless look (!)

    The Marantz SR4023 is a Power House

    I just received this receiver from Crutchfield, a very good, trusted company with a professional staff and good technical support. My old 1973 Pioneer 727's balance pot. went on the blitz and it was time for an upgrade. This Marantz has the same features as the old Pioneer and a little more. Granted, it doesn't have the solid wood case or the stainless steel faceplate as the vintage components but it is NOT plastic and outside/inside the product is very well made. Like the old Pioneer, it doesn't skimp on features audiophiles want. 80 watts of RMS power - 8 ohm speakers is more than enough to power my Bose Acoustimas system in one room. Plenty of analogs for the CD, DVD, Aux and two tape decks and a phonograph mm pre-amp output to hear the warm sound of vinyl. While the Direct Source button gives you "pure" sound, I have my old (1973) Soundcraftsman equalizer fine tuning the sound output. The digital display is large and easy to read and easy to program the tuner radio bands. The unit is lighter and slightly smaller than the old vintage which makes it easier to move it around for cable hookups. I do wish Marantz would have included a balance pot. While this may not be a big concern if your seated dead center in the stereo field, it could have an effect on the listening. I have a Tandberg TD 20A reel-to-reel tape machine where I can adjust the balance through the tape VU meters. All in all, it's a nice unit for the price. I'm very happy with this unit!
    Pros:
    Nice metal cabinet, easy to use remote control, large/clear front display, plenty of in.out jacks for all external components, pre-amp for the phonograph, Clean sound for a one room zone with plenty of RMS power, the am radio antenna supplied works well but you may need an outside fm antenna for better reception.
    Cons:
    Needs a balance control not a "standby light"!

    The Marantz SR4023 is nice but I am disapointed that it does not make the bass thump like I thought it would. I am using an old pair of Bose 301 and Bose Acoustimass speakers. I use to have a Marantz that use to make these speakers rock. Maybe I need an equalizer.

    It's so nice to hear the crackle of vinyl again. My new Marantz turntable is fantastic, easy to use, sleek, understated and elegant.
    Cons:
    The directions don't indicate that you need to wrap the rubber band (black) around the wheel and spindle underneath the platter - no where in the directions is this step mentioned. However, it's crucial.

    Excellent sound. Have hooked to a Marantz CD6004 and the sound is incredible. Warm sound as always Marantz have done it. Has a sub preout a main in pre out coupler so you can connect an equalizer if you like. At the beginning there was no sound on the main speakers but Chris from Crutchfield assisted me and the receiver worked perfectly thanks Chris for your patience. As always Crutchfield with the best service on the internet by far.

    Had an Onkyo Reciever for years, it stopped working right. Bought this and the sound quality is great. Very nice. My old Onkyo CD player still works but will be upgrading to an Marantz CD player soon for even better sound. Onkyo is not what is use to be.

    This receiver replaces an old Tandberg receiver and is connected to a Marantz CD player, Thorens turntable, Tandberg dassette deck and ADS speakers. The installation was a snap with the various types of connections clearly marked on the rear panel of the receiver. The receiver works well with all the components and the tuner works very well with the included antennas. The front panel of the receiver matches the Marantz CD player and looks great in the teak cabinet. The remote control is easy to use and uses a slightly different color pattern to easily distinguish it from the CD player remote. All in all it is a great product for a reasonable price.

    Pleasantly Surprised

    This receiver replaced an Onkyo receiver that I had for many years (I consider myself an audiophile but at the time, Onkyo receivers was pretty high end). Also, I've always believed that when purchasing your first high end stereo, you should determine how much you want to spend on your system and invest 50%of the cost in speakers- that's because speakers can make the biggest difference in the sound.

    Well, maybe speakers can make the biggest difference in the sound but the right receiver can sure make those speakers shine. Even my wife mentioned that the Marantz seemed to provide a clear sound and she is someone who believe Bass is good, treble and midrange are bad.

    My only criticism would be the small status display and the On/Standby status LED. Since the status light is turned off when the system is on, the only way to tell if the receiver is on is by the small display which typically has 2 to 4 letters on it (CD, REC1, etc). It would have been nice if the status light was also lit when the receiver was on. Picky I know, but still annoying.

    Pro - Clear sound, ample input ports, easy hook-up, the Marantz name.
    Cons - On/Standby status light is counter-intuitive
