Dual

Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Our take on the Dual XDMA6510

by Ken Nail

If you're an iPod® or iPhone® user, Dual's been thinking of you. Not only does their XDMA6510 CD receiver offer built-in controls for your player, but they've included a mount for it too. So, now you can keep your player right where you'd like it while you drive.

XDMA6510 with included mount

Dual also equips the XDMA6510 to handle all your mobile music needs. You can plug any other USB device into the handy front-panel input, or jack in a couple of audio players to the front and rear auxiliary inputs. Discs are covered too — you can play discs loaded with MP3 and WMA files, as well as your store-bought CDs.

Sound shaping is handled competently by bass and treble controls, along with seven preset EQ settings. And if you need more power, you can hook up external amps or a powered sub to the two pairs of preamp outputs. The receiver's sub level control lets you go to town when you want to crank the bass.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Dual stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Dual, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

Note: Apple iPod/iPhone software updates may change functionality results. If you download a newer software version, you may need to reset the head unit and your iPod/iPhone to regain functionality. If this doesn't work, you may need to wait until a newer software update is available.

iPod/iPhone Cradle: The Dual XDMA6510 includes an iPod/iPhone cradle which provides a place to secure your iPod or iPhone next to the Dual head unit. The cradle will attach to the XDMA6510 when ISO-mounting or DIN-mounting the head unit in your dash.

    • Stereo Minijack (3.5mm) Input: The XDMA6510 features a front-panel 3.5mm auxiliary input for temporary connecting an external portable audio device, such as a portable MP3 player.
    • Stereo RCA Input: The XDMA6510 is fitted with a rear-panel stereo RCA auxiliary input for permanent connection of an external audio source.

    Audio Section

MOSFET Amplifier: The Dual XDMA6510 is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the XDMA6510 are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the XDMA6510 are as follows:

    • CEA2006 Specs: 18 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Maximum Power Output: 60 watts x 4 channels (240 watts total)

Preset EQ Curves: The Dual CD Receiver features the following preset EQ curves (Flat, Pop, Jazz, Classic, Beat, Rock, & User) to customize your music listening.

Bass &Treble: The Bass & Treble can be independently adjusted from -6 to +6. Bass & Treble settings are retained for each mode individually. Any adjustments to the Bass or Treble settings automatically cancel the current EQ curve.

2V/4Ch Preamp Outputs: The XDMA6510 is equipped with two sets of preamp outputs (Front, Rear/Sub). The unit's rear-channel can be used as a full-range preamp output with fade control, or as a non-fading subwoofer preamp output. When used as a subwoofer preamp output the level can be adjusted independently from 0-12. Adjusting the subwoofer level to 0 turns the subwoofer output off.

Programmable Turn-On Volume: You can program the unit to turn on at a specific volume (1-46).

Source Volume Level: The Source Volume Level control allows a gain adjustment for each audio source (AM, FM, CD, Aux & USB). You can set the source volume level for each mode, depending on the relative volume of each audio source.

Key Beep: When this function is enabled, every button press will output a beep tone.

    Radio Functions

AM/FM Tuner: The Dual 6510 features a built-in AM/FM tuner with manual, seek, & preset tuning.

Preset Tuning: The built-in AM/FM tuner allows you to store up to 18 FM station presets and 12 AM station presets. You can tune your presets manually or have the head unit do it automatically.

Local: The Local function allows only strong radio stations to be received, blocking stations with weaker signals.

European Tuning: You can switch the tuner between USA or European tuning.

    Display Features

Detachable Face: The Dual CD Receiver features a detachable faceplate and comes supplied with a hard-plastic carrying case to store the receiver's face when detached. The head unit includes two face-fixing screws for use if you prefer that the unit's faceplate always stays attached.

Note: An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can also be purchased for this unit.

10-Character LCD: The XDMA6510 features a 10 character LCD with white text & black background for easy viewing during the day or nighttime.

Display Settings: The head unit offers the following display settings.

    • Scrolling: You can change the scrolling style used for displayed information on the LCD screen. Choose from Off (no scrolling), Once (scrolls once), 15 Secs (scrolls once per 15 seconds), and On (constantly scrolls).
    • Display Dimmer: The head unit's display features three illumination dimmer settings (High/Medium/Low).

12/24 Hour Clock: The unit's built-in clock will display 12-hour AM/PM time in USA frequency spacing mode. In European frequency spacing mode, the clock will display 24-hour time.

Note: The clock can be set to stay on even when the head unit is turned off.

Power-On Message: This feature allows a "Good Morning/Afternoon/Evening" text message to be shown on the unit's LCD screen when it is powered on.

Demo Mode: You can enable or disable the unit's demonstration mode.

    Remote Control

Wireless Remote Control: The XDMA6510 comes supplied with an 18-button IR wireless remote control which provides complete control of the Dual CD Receiver.

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input on the rear of the unit to allow you to keep your vehicle's radio steering wheel remote controls when used with the optional PAC SWI-RC Steering Wheel Control Interface Adapter (541SWIRC, sold separately); or the optional Metra ASWC Steering Wheel Control Interface Adapter (120ASWC, sold separately).

Excellent value, more than I expected for price

Written By The Boz, West Milford, NJ on Tuesday, June 04, 2013
    Installed in a 1996 Ford F Series
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Typical Crutchfield excellent wiring adapters & installation parts; wiring took 10 minutes (overly anal with solder & heatshrink) and installation would have taken 10 minutes except Ford F-150 dash orifice is NOT DIN. Fortunately it is a plastic dash opening so rasping out the 1/16" of plastic took an extra 5 minutes with multiple test fits. Once the opening accepts the DIN sleeve, installation completes in about 90 seconds and you are live once you reconnect the battery. One of the easiest retrofits I have done in 40 years. Receiver is excellent quality for the functions I have used, so far just AM/FM and the front-panel USB port means I can just plug in a flash drive and not even deal with my MP3 player. Haven't even fed a CD into the unit yet but will this week. Sound quality is excellent with stock Ford speakers but may consider a subwoofer behind the seat (regular cab) now that I have something to drive it. Just needs a warning note if you are putting it into an old old vehicle. Not many people will. I love it!
    Pros:
Very versatile with front USB and AUX inputs Sound quality great with factory speakers Almost idiot-proof simple wiring Excellent instructions
    Cons:
Needed minor trimming of dash opening to fit older pickup truck Control buttons are sized for small fingers but remote makes up for it

    Good value, faceplate is stubborn

Written By MC, Dallas on Wednesday, May 29, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Not bad for a super-budget unit. Sounds decent for the bucks, and the iPod controls work fine. Only real issue is the faceplate - it's a pain to get off. Pop the button and the side loosend - then wrestle with it till you get it loose. Feels very much like something will eventually break. After years of removable plates, is it that hard to design one that works like all the others?
    Pros:
    Good value
    Cons:
Faceplate has to be wrestled loose.

    Great for the money

Written By ddonuts444, Why do I need to give my location, for a review? on Sunday, May 12, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this to upgrade my '98 ford escort zx2's system. The pros and cons pretty much sum up my review.
    Pros:
Good (possibly the best) value for the price due to a huge amount of features Sound quality is fairly good, except for the fm radio Plenty of inputs. Included ipod/iphone mount Plenty of features. The ones that stood out to me are: -Adjustable volume for the rear sub output -Adjustable volume for each input
    Cons:
Takes way too long to read my iphone FM Radio tuner is next to worthless, and worse than the radio that came stock with my escort Buttons feel flimsy at times, but most of the time it's ok Relatively limited equalizer options. Fairly finicky controls, but you can get used to them Limited support for digital media files on usb drives(mp3 and wma only)

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For the price I don't think you can beat this receiver. My old deck had a fold down faceplate, which I hated, so I really like the faceplate on this receiver. The FM reception is good, the controls and remote are easy to use, CDs and USB devices work very well with great sound and clarity, and as usual Crutchfield supplies everything one needs for an easy install.
    Pros:
Good FM reception. Non-fold-down detachable faceplate. USB and AUX inputs. Easy to use controls and remote. Great sound and clarity
    Cons:
Wish it had bluetooth, but not at this price. Oh well...

Product did not fit my Miata as promised

Written By MarleneC, Davis, CA on Wednesday, March 13, 2013
    Installed in a 1991 Mazda MX5
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

According to the Crutchfield site, this radio was supposed to fit my stock 1991 Mazda Miata, but it is too big. My husband spent one afternoon modifying the supplied receiver housing to fit into the dashboard space. It took multiple iterations of cutting and shaving to get the thing to fit. After soldering the wire harness and installing the receiver kit in the dash, we discovered that the vehicle factory receiver trim panel would not install over the Dual receiver, which was too wide by 1/8-3/16 inch because of the ears (stops) that hold it in the DIN sleeve. Actually, even the DIN sleeve itself was too wide. We were highly disappointed, as the sound quality of the radio was good. We sent it all back and received a full refund of our payment, but still lost two precious afternoons in a futile attempt to install a product that was supposed to fit. Crutchfield should take more care with its claims of fit. I have no way to know if this radio was larger than specifications or if Crutchfield is using the wrong measurements on my vehicle, but it is inexcusable in either case for them to say it fits when it does not.
    Pros:
    Sound was good
    Cons:
    Doesn't fit as promised

    Awesome

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this for my sons first car. It was an easy install with the included installation hardware. The wiring harness, antenna adapter, in dash receiver kit, and detailed instructions made this easy to install. This has a separate subwoofer jack in the back of the radio so he has complete control over the subwoofer in the trunk. The ipod/iphone holder that you can mount on the side of the deck is perfect. He can use his iphone to play music without having to hold it. It also has 2 more rca jacks in the back for a total of 3. 2 outputs and 1 input. This radio has it all for an amazing price!
    Pros:
Price, ease of use, iphone/ipod holder, 3 rca jacks in the back (1 subwoofer, 1 regular, 1 input), and price again for what you get
    Cons:
    None so far

    Music upgrade for a hardbody

Written By KevinS, Tyler, TX on Friday, March 08, 2013
Installed in a 1994 Nissan Hardbody
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have been using the factory AM/FM radio cassette player in my '94 Nissan pickup since I bought it about 15 years ago. For the last 2 1/2 years I have been using an FM transmitter to listen to podcasts on my iPod Touch. The audio quality is usually scratchy and I finally decided to do some research to see what it would cost to improve my setup. I was almost resigned to having to pay someone to do it for me. I found the Crutchfield's website through a Web search and I was immediately impressed that they offered customized instructions on teardown for receivers and speakers for each vehicle. They also recommended wire harnesses, an antenna adapter and a mounting kit. Crutchfield even went to the trouble to send an e-mail after my order was delivered. No other vendor has ever done that for me! The wire harnesses were color coded and a cinch to assemble. I used solderless connectors and heat-shrink tubing to put everything together. It would have been a nightmare trying to figure it out myself. I did not end up using the mounting kit as it did not include the storage compartment that sits under the receiver. I managed to transfer the bracket and compartment from the old unit and fits perfectly. I have never installed a receiver before so I was pretty pumped when I turned it on and the quality difference was immediately obvious. I plugged my iPod in and it was automatically detected and started to play. The remote control is certainly a perk.
    Pros:
Good instructions. Color coded wiring harnesses. Detachable face plate. Remote control. AM/FM, CD, IOS devices, other USB devices. Good value. Easy install.
    Cons:
It took a bit of effort to figure out the menu system

    Dual XDMA6510

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Choose this to replace the OEM receiver in my 1995 pickup. What a big improvement!! I selected this based on the features and price. I wanted a receiver that would get good FM reception and had the features for hooking up an iphone or ipod. The unit produces good sound. The only issue I have had is it seems slow in reading the iphone through the USB and will occasionally 'skip' while playing. Otherwise a great buy.
