Our take on the Channel Master CM-7000PAL

by Steve Kindig

At last — a convenient way to record over-the-air high-def TV shows without paying for a satellite or cable TV subscription. Simply connect this Channel Master DVR to an antenna and start recording your favorite network shows in crystal-clear HD — to watch whenever you want. And this is a dual-tuner DVR, so you can watch one over-the-air channel while simultaneously recording another, or set it to record shows on two different channels at the same time.

The CM-7000PAL can record up to 30 hours of high-def programs, and provides great DVR conveniences like pause and forward/reverse skip using the remote control. And here's a bonus: over-the-air high-def broadcasts look as good or better than cable or satellite HD. You'll find HDMI and component video connections to ensure compatibility with virtually any HDTV. This DVR is a terrific solution for projector-based home theaters, since projectors never include a built-in tuner. Note: This DVR cannot record satellite or cable TV signals.

Written By crackedDVR, Orlando, FL on Wednesday, November 30, 2011

The CM7000-PAL is a great concept. I don't want to be tied to a monthly service fee like cable or TiVo. I was stoked to see that I could record two live shows while watching a recording, that's cool.

The bad news is that I'm currently holding my third CM7000-PAL in four months. The first arrived DOA out of the box. Channel Master replaced it happily, but that one died in 78 days. I tried to return it for $$$, but their return policy had expired. Channel Master again replaced my device with a new one that had NO sound! So in 120+ days I've had a working DVR for 78 days--thats a 65% uptime rate. What if your car or your cell phone only worked half the time?

At this point I'm not sure what I paid for and my one year manufactures warrantee is steadily dwindling away. All I wanted was to record live TV to watch at my convenience, but instead I got a hobby corresponding with tech-support. At this point I'd rather make my hobby building my own MythTV DVR.
    Pros:
Great concept; easy to install and use; free of monthly service fees; records two live shows while watching a recording--that's cool.
    Cons:
Product reliability and company customer service are poor, very poor.

    Great replacement service

The first unit I received was unable to keep the correct time and would lose as much as 9 minutes a day. There are some trouble-shooting fixes for that problem, but they didn't work. Crutchfield sent a replacement unit within one day and sent a pre-paid return authorization. The second unit keeps time and works as-advertised. Thank you.

    Just about perfect

Written By Chris M., Wayne NJ on Sunday, October 09, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Pros: - Good Quality recording in HD and SD (depending on the way the program is aired) - Easy to use, intuitive menus - Excellent remote control (will also control basic functions on your TV) - Excellent TV guide downloaded over air (1 week TV schedule download) - Easy to program (includes one time event, weekly, Mon-Fri and Daily options) - Very responsive, with only ms delay between button press and DVR reaction - 30s forward skip and 10s backwards skip functions - dual tuner can record 2 shows simultaneously, while watching an already recorded show (one RF input cable is internally routed to the 2 tuners) - RF and HDMI (with sound) outputs.

Cons: - Cannot select to record HD program in SD (to save HDD space). - User Interface could be better ( a but annoyed with the way recorded programs are displayed, using only 1 quarter of the screen available; would have preferred a table format) - LAN port / USB used only for updating software; cannot connect an external USB drive, or stream through the network

Bottom Line: Solid, responsive, good quality DVR. Excellent internal tuners may actually improve picture quality (over TV tuner). All in all, I am very happy with my purchase and I would recommend this to a friend. Can't wait for the WiFi coming out later this year. (Hopefully with network streaming capability and USB connectivity.)

    PERFECT!!

There are no HD local channels here on DirecTV and, since we must have Speed Channel and local channels, we bought the CM 7000 and a $15.99 rabbit ears antenna.

When the local channels broadcast in HD the picture on the CM is perfect, absolutely perfect.

The customer service and packaging from Crutchfield was also absolutely perfect.

    I am delighted!!

    Good upgrade for HD-ready TVs

Written By Tom S, Boise, ID on Sunday, September 25, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a 50" Sony LCD TV that does not have a off-air Digital Tuner built-in, so the Channel Master CM-7000PAL was a good way to add that functionality along with DVR functionality. I dropped my satellite subscription and have gone with OTA only. It is nice to not have to have any monthly fees like a Tivo box would have.

The DVR functionality is good, although the user interface is a little bit dated when compared to the functionality and user interface of my former DirecTV DVR. For example, when opening the Guide, the channel I am watching is no longer shown in a smaller window box like it is on several other menues. However, you can still browse the guide in overlay windows of the full screen using the right arrow key on the remote, which I prefer over the guide button anyway. I am hoping that a software update in the future will upgrade the user interface.

My only complaint is that the remote can handle most devices, including my Receiver, but cannot be programmed for my Sony Blu Ray player, which apparently requires 5-digit remote codes. The CM-7000PAL remote can only handle 3-digit remote codes.

Ok... it is what it is

Written By Tmas, USA on Tuesday, September 20, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The CM-7000pal does what it says it will do. I can record off the Air-TV, the picture quality is average not the greatest. It is easy to set up but lacks some features found in Satellite DVR's. If you are looking for a DVR that can do recording off the Air this is about your only option in a stand alone unit.

I tried the MDR515H and it is prone to problems and is harder to program, it stopped working and would not turn on, failed with in 30 days so I returned it.

I have had the CM-7000pal for about 3 weeks and it is easy to program to record your favorite programs of the air. The cost was about $70 more then the MDR515H but is still pricey. But I am saving over $85 a month over satellite prices so the high price for this unit in my mind is justified.

I only wish some of the top players Sony, Samsung,Toshiba, Pioneer, LG had some current off-air DVR products but they don't. For now the CM-7000pal is about the only decent off-air DVR out there.

So I say go for it if you have done your due diligence and can afford the $ price.

    Best Regards,

    T_Mas

Fee Free DVR for Broadcast channels

Written By ZTJ, Atlanta, GA on Sunday, September 18, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great option if you are looking to cut the cord with cable and can't stand sitting through commercials or paying for a channel guide. I hooked this up to a small inexpensive HD antenna on my roof and get dozens of over the air channels uncompressed. Live broadcasts (HD content) look phenomenal. It has the same remote and similar menu structure to Dish Network's DVR, although with some of the features missing - it will not show picture when scrolling through the channel guide. Another quirk is the remote range/sensor: sometimes I have to stand right in front of the sensor for it to register (there are no buttons on the front to control without the remote). It would be nice if it had a larger size drive or expandability, but with over the air I will be recording less junk programming than I did with dish so it may not be an issue.

Not one to go crazy with praising a product, but this PVR really did the trick...

After ditching Dish because I got tired of paying for more commercials than regular OTA TV, my family decided to give up Pay TV for OTA, and Netflix. It was tough without our Dish DVR. Netflix On Demand is great, but we kept running into Documentaries, and Public Broadcast Programming we wanted to watch, but schedules would conflict. Bring On the CM-7000PAL! Problem Solved, and my Wife and I could not be happier to be rid of the insanely excessive commercials cable, and dish expect their customers to pay for. Now we can search for content, and record, pause, playback Live TV, and if there is 10 minutes an hour of commercials we can just skip thru them, the key is ...

WE ARE NOT PAYING DISH FOR THE CONTENT, OR THE SUPPOSED PRIVILEDGE TO DO ALL THAT EXTRA BUTTON PUSHING!!!

Thank You Channel Master for keeping this product around!!!!!!

    Channel Master CM-7000PAL

Written By Bernard, Roswell, NM on Tuesday, September 13, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Fist digital tuner out of over 20 that have lasted more than a month. Went over a year with no TV, only a DVD library. A big fat high 5 to the fed for that one; 1st forcing the industry into digital broadcasting before they were ready to do so, then lying to us by telling that ALL TV channels had to go digital by a certain date. Multiple complaints to representatives went ignored. By law they are supposed to reply but don't and until we demand differently, get used to it. Well high 5 to Channel Master for being the first to supply a solution and they did it in flying colors with this DVR. It's not perfect. Read the other reviews, they point out some of it's shortfalls. TV guide here in New Mexico rarely ever posts programming past 6+ hours. If you fill the hard drive (it's too small), it will erase saved programming without warning you when you set it to tape something. It will not hold settings you tell it to keep; you have to constantly keep resetting them every time you do anything but just watch it. These flaws could be fixed in software but from what I hear about Channel Master's level of customer care, it won't get fixed any time soon. It's the only digital tuner for older TV's. Thanks to the government, Channel Master has a monopoly on the digital tuner market right now for older TV's, so as we go from a world leader to the new third world dump, enjoy what is out there because it won't get any better than this.

    Just Hooked It Up!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This just came in (thanks for the quick delivery Crutchfield). I had it hooked up in moments and was watching the TV. I just cut the cord on Dishnetwork and went pure OTA, except for some Netflix streaming.

It's still early, but my out of box experience has been really good so far. I'm inpressed. I have setup some recording from the TV grid. The remote and software seems to be very close to my Dishnetwork DVRs and that's a good thing because everyone here knows the remote well. The only odd thing I've seen so far is when connecting audio outs to a receiver from the Channel Master, the sound from the receiver is slightly delayed from the HDMI sound coming from the TV. I have not tried an update to see if this issues is fixed yet. I will post more as I give this little box a work out. So far so good tho. :)

    Great Product for Antenna TV

Written By Joel S, Portland, OR on Wednesday, August 31, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought the PAL 7000 to do two different tasks. I needed a new HD Tuner, and I wanted an HD DVR to replace my older Tivo which I used with a Converter box. I had dropped cable service when HD TV came in (and the price went up substantially) so I wanted a unit that was optimized for antenna reception.

The PAL 7000 works great for both purposes. Since it has two tuners, it can either record two programs or watch live TV while still recording one different program.

The program search features work very well. They are not quite as quick and easy as Tivo but they don't cost $500 either. The onscreen TV guide is very handy and allows selecting programs directly to either watch or record.

The built in tuner is at least as sensitive as my (now dead) Samsung DTBH260F HDTV was.

I primarily use a Logitech remote to control all the system devices, although the Channel Master remote is a little better for some of the DVR functions. I haven't gotten it to control the surround sound or Tivo, so I mostly use the Logitech.

I like the signal strength display when I change channels, and I especially appreciate the DVR display which shows how much recording space is available. That was always an issue with the Tivo.

    DVR Review

Written By Ray, Blue Grass, Ia 52726 on Saturday, August 27, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I found that the Channel Master CM-700PAL does everything that my previous Satellite DVR did. The picture quality is outstanding with just using an outside local antenna. We are very happy and satisified. My wife is able to watch her selected programming that she always did on satellite and is very happy with the ease of operation, the picture quality and the user friendly functions of the remote control.

Perfect for time shifting HD programs

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this product to replace Dish Network's DTVPal DVR which is no longer sold or supported. The CM-7000PAL is the same DVR with updated software; several programing glitches have been fixed. If you are using an indoor antenna, I recommend the Terk HDTVa amplified antenna (available from Crutchfield). It outperforms others I have tried and I rarely have signal dropouts on TV stations within a 45 mile radius.
