Sony

Our take on the Sony SAL2470Z Lens

by Dave Bar

Great zoom lens for low-light photography

Sony's SAL2470Z was designed for Sony's Alpha line of SLR digital cameras. Its focal range gives you moderate wide-angle to medium telephoto shooting. A large maximum aperture throughout the focal range means you'll get well-exposed photos, even when shooting in lower light with slower shutter speeds. Shoot group photos indoors without using a flash. And capture clear outdoor shots — whether the subject is friends on a hiking trail or the panoramic view from a mountaintop.

  • Carl Zeiss® Vario-Sonnar T* 24-70mm f2.8 zoom lens

  • effective focal length:

    Specifications

    Features

Compatibility: This lens is compatible with the Sony Alpha-series digital SLR cameras.

Carl Zeiss T* Coating: The SAL2470Z lens features Carl Zeiss T* (T-Star) coating that virtually eliminates the lens flare, internal reflection, and light scattering that can occur at glass-to-air surfaces.

ED (Extra-low dispersion) Glass: Two ED glass elements minimize flare and reduce color abnormalities, giving you sharp and clear shots, even at full telephoto extension.

Lens Hood: The included lens hood allows for better shooting in bright light. A lens hood can be used to reduce flare in bright light areas to ensure maximum image quality.

Note: When using the built-in camera flash, make sure to remove the lens hood to avoid blocking the light from the flash.

Focus Mode: This lens is compatible with automatic and manual focusing. To use auto-focus, both the camera body and the Focus Mode switch on the lens must be set to auto-focus. To focus manually, set the camera body or the Focus Mode switch on the lens to manual focus and adjust the focus ring on the lens.

Focus Hold: While the Focus Hold button is pressed, auto-focus is suspended and the focus is fixed in that position.

Distance Information: The shooting distance scale, located on the barrel of the lens, is graduated in feet and meters from 1.1 ft. (0.34m) to infinity. For accurate manual focusing, look through the viewfinder while rotating the focusing ring.

    An amazing lens!

Written By K. Williams, Brandon, MS on Wednesday, March 28, 2012

This is one amazing lens. I have had a copy of it for around two years or so now and I love it. Super sharp for a zoom in its range and works great. Focusing speed is excellent too. Works great on any body I have used it on including Sony and Minolta. I am not quite sure why the guy rated this lens so poorly because it is an awkward range on an APS-C camera though. That is terrible to rate it so low because of that. I is the best 24-70mm lens in its class! If he needs a better range on APS-C then buy another lens but do not belittle this magnificent lens because of that nonsense!!!
    Pros:
Sharp, Silent and excellent focus speed, Well-Built
    Cons:
    None that I can tell!

    Sony SAL2470Z Lens

Written By Dust Monster, Yakima, WA on Thursday, November 17, 2011

If you are not a pro photographer, this lens may be overkill, especially for the price. By "pro" I mean a working photographer who gets paid.

I have taken this lens on an overseas vacation trip. Honestly, for vacation type shots where you are spending time with the family, I would recommend something that is lighter, more compact, and doesn't require as much of your attention. In the back of my mind, I was always on the lookout for would-be thieves on the city streets. From experience, I would advise to take something that you won't regret losing (as much).

Another (cheaper and lighter) full frame alternative is the SAL-2875. If you are shooting with an APS-C sensor sized body, the new SAL-1650 is excellent, and it is also weather sealed.
    Pros:
The images are excellent throughout the zoom range and aperture range. The typical Carl Zeiss micro contrast gives the images that "pop".
    Cons:
High quality glass will always be heavy and maybe cumbersome, but this is the only negative that comes to mind. Keep in mind that I don't do lab testing on my lenses. This is purely based on viewing my images on screen and also viewing my prints. My reason for 4 stars: price.

This is a FF zoom lens

Written By Houckster, Atlanta, GA on Monday, January 18, 2010

While this lens can be used by either APS-C or full frame cameras, there are better lenses for indoor work with APS-C cameras. A 36-105 zoom range is simply too restrictive for many indoor subjects. While the sharpness and speed of this lens will always be very valuable features, you still have to be able to frame the subject and a 36mm lens is too often simply not wide enough. Even a 28mm is stressed indoors for larger subjects. OTOH, this lens would is nearly perfect for a full frame camera for both outdoor and indoor shots. Should I ever move to a FF Sony camera, this lens would be a major priority.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Received the lens fast, as usual, from Crutchfield.

I have really put it through it's paces and have to say...this lens is absolutely spectacular. Color is spot on, zoom is stable, fast to focus, quiet as can be, and RAZOR sharp! This will rival most of your prime lenses!

I love it and it is well worth the price of admission.
