Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Our take on the Alpine CDA-9886

by Robert Ferency-Viars

Alpine excellence in your dash

The CDA-9886 CD receiver furthers Alpine's top-notch reputation for excellent sound. Its strong internal amp delivers powerful output, and you can shape the sound with Bass Engine® sound controls — a 2-band parametric equalizer, plus a low-pass filter for your subwoofer. The stereo also features a high-pass filter that'll keep your full-range speakers clear by eliminating the low bass that they can't handle.

User-friendly controls and features

USB and iPod connections The 2-line BioLite display delivers text that's easy to read anywhere in the car. Alpine's included KCE-422i iPod® cable lets you connect your iPod and use the Percentage Search function to find your favorite songs fast — just tap the radio preset buttons to jump quickly through sections of your playlist. You'll also find a built-in USB input ready for your thumb drives or USB-equipped music players (except iPod).

Tune your system to perfection

Tuning kit The CDA-9886 offers three sets of preamp outputs for connecting an amplified system. The combination of Alpine's PXA-H100 IMPRINT sound processor and the KTX-H100 tuning kit you'll turn your vehicle into the perfect listening space — the IMPRINT measures your car's acoustics and adjusts the stereo's settings automatically to create a perfect audio environment.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Hands-on Research" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

    Display Features

BioLite Display: The crisp, clear, white on black BioLite display uses biochemical luminescence technology that provides outstanding visibility even in daylight. It is 40% brighter than normal displays, with higher resolution and better contrast. In addition, it has a much wider viewing angle than conventional displays.

Background Animation Displays: You can select from 4 different animated background displays: falling Vs, glimmering water surface, gears, or pulsating shapes (hearts, diamonds, musical notes, stars, etc). The animation displays can be turned off for a plain black background.

Dimmer: This unit is equipped with an illumination lead; when the unit's dimmer mode is set to Auto and the illumination lead is connected to your vehicle's headlight circuit, the display and button illumination will dim to a fixed, preset level whenever the headlights are turned on. If preferred, you may choose the Manual dimmer mode setting, so the display and button illumination is dim at all times.

Blackout: To reduce power consumption you can turn off the display and button back lighting. When the Blackout Mode is turned on the display will illuminate for five seconds each time you press a button.

Changer Name: You can change the name on the display to match the type of device connected to the CD changer input; Changer, USB, or Portable.

Opening Message: When engaged, this feature will display a special message each time you turn on the radio on certain dates; Merry Christmas, Happy Birthday (after you program your birth date), etc.

    Audio Section

CEA-2006 Compliant: The specifications given by Alpine for the built-in amplifier comply with the CEA-2006 mobile amplifier power testing and measurement standards from the CEA (Consumer Electronics Association). All manufacturers who comply with the standard can display the CEA-2006 logo on their product.

Bass and Treble Controls: The head unit features independent Bass and Treble controls that allow you to adjust each setting from -7 to +7.

Subwoofer Pre-out: In addition to the front and rear 4-volt preamp outputs, the CDA-9886 has a dedicated 4-volt subwoofer preamp output with variable level adjustment of 0 to 15.

Power IC Off: When an external amplifier is powering all the speakers in the system, you can turn the internal amp off, which will improve the sound quality.

Interrupt Feature: When a device having the interrupt feature (such as a cellular telephone) is connected to the receiver, the audio signal will be automatically muted whenever the interrupt signal is received from the device. The supplied wiring harness contains a pink/black Interrupt lead that needs to be connected to the device's interrupt signal connection.

    Sound Processing (with optional PXA-H100)

Imprint: With the addition of the optional PXA-H100 Imprint box (500PXAH100, sold separately) and KTX-H100 tuning kit (500KTXH100, sold separately) a car's inherent acoustic shortcomings can be overcome with the MultEQ feature. Imprint also gives you much more sound adjustment flexibility as detailed below.

MultEQ: MultEQ, developed by Audyssey Labs, automatically optimizes the audio for the listening environment inside your vehicle. The Imprint kit includes the hardware, software, and microphone necessary to measure multiple positions in the car and capture frequency and time domain information from the vehicle's actual acoustical environment. Once the car's speaker location delays are measured, along with the frequency peaks and dips caused by the absorptive and reflective materials in the interior, MultEQ creates a set of equalization filters to correct the frequency response and time domain problems for each speaker in the vehicle. It also removes sound distortion caused by the specific acoustical problems in the vehicle by applying unique FIR filters, using more than 500 points along the frequency spectrum per channel. This optimizes the sound reproduction to the specific vehicle listening environment with much greater precision than can be achieved using typical graphic or parametric equalization. The result is a more accurate soundstage and smoother, more natural sound optimized to match your vehicle.

Equalizer: 10 typical equalizer settings are preset at the factory for a variety of musical source material. You can select from - Flat, Pops, Rock, News, Jazz & Blues, Electrical Dance, Hip Hop & Rap, Easy Listening, Country, and Classical. The head unit will also save six custom EQ curves you create by adjusting the units built-in EQ. Choose the parametric or graphic EQ:

    • 5- Band Parametric EQ: The built-in Parametric EQ allows you to adjust the following 5 frequency bands in 1/3 octave steps from -6 to +6 dB at a bandwidth Q factor of 1, 1.5, or 3
      • Band 1: 20 Hz to 80 Hz
      • Band 2: 50 Hz to 200 Hz
      • Band 3: 125 Hz to 3.2 kHz
      • Band 4: 315 Hz to 8 kHz
      • Band 5: 800 Hz to 20 kHz
    • 7-Band Graphic EQ: The built-in Graphic EQ allows you to adjust the following 7 frequencies from -6 to +6 dB
      • Band 1: 63 Hz
      • Band 2: 150 Hz
      • Band 3: 400 Hz
      • Band 4: 1 kHz
      • Band 5: 2.5 kHz
      • Band 6: 6.3 kHz
      • Band 7: 17.5 kHz

Crossover: The active crossover can be used as a 2.2 channel (3-way; low-pass subwoofer, band-pass midrange, high-pass tweeter) or a 4.2 channel (2-way; high-pass front and rear, low-pass subwoofer). A crossover limits the frequencies delivered to a given speaker, so you send only the frequencies for which the speaker is well suited. The crossover adjusts the high pass filter or low pass filter of each band along with the slope and output level. You can adjust the following crossover settings:

    • 4.2 Channel:
      • High Pass Filter: the front and rear outputs are individually adjustable; crossover from 20 to 200 Hz in 1/3 octave steps with a slope of Flat, 6, 12, 18 or 24 dB/oct, additionally you can adjust the output level from -12 to 0 dB
      • Low Pass Filter: the subwoofer output can be stereo or mono; crossover from 20 to 200 Hz in 1/3 octave steps with a slope of Flat, 6, 12, 18 or 24 dB/oct, additionally you can adjust the output level from -12 to 0 dB
    • 2.2 Channel:
      • Tweeter/High Pass Filter: crossover from 1 kHz to 20 kHz in 1/3 octave steps with a slope of 6, 12, 18, or 24 dB/oct, additionally you can adjust the output level from -12 to 0 dB
      • Midrange/Band Pass Filter: a band pass has both high pass and low pass filters; HPF 20 to 200 Hz in 1/3 octave steps with a slope of Flat, 6, 12, 18 or 24 dB/oct; LPF from 20 Hz to 20 kHz in 1/3 octave steps with a slope of Flat, 6, 12, 18 or 24 dB/oct, additionally you can adjust the output level from -12 to 0 dB
      • Subwoofer/Low Pass Filter: the subwoofer output can be stereo or mono; crossover from 20 to 200 Hz in 1/3 octave steps with a slope of Flat, 6, 12, 18 or 24 dB/oct, additionally you can adjust the output level from -12 to 0 dB

Time Correction: The time correction feature delays the audio signal to the speakers closer to the listener. This effectively creates a perception of increased distance for those speakers. Time Correction allows the listener to be placed at an equal distance from all speakers for optimum staging. You can adjust the distance of each speaker and subwoofer (6-channel) to the listener from 0 to 132.7 inches.

Media Xpander: The MX (Media Xpander) function makes vocals or instruments sound distinct by restoring sound quality typically lost during recording or transmission; this function helps restore audio information that becomes obscured when audio is compressed. The MX function can be applied to all sources, except AM radio. There are three settings and each source can have its own setting.

    CD Playback

MP3/WMA/AAC Playback: This unit can play CD-ROM, CD-R, and CD-RW discs containing MP3, WMA, and AAC files recorded using the ISO 9660 Level 1 or Level 2 formats. MP3 files with bit rates from 32 kbps to 320 kbps, WMA files with bit rates from 48 kbps to 192 kbps, and AAC files with bit rates from 16 kbps to 320 kbps are supported. Variable bit rates are also compatible. Up to 510 files/folders and a maximum of 255 folders can be read from one disc. ID3 tags v1 and v2, and WMA tags are supported; track title, artist name, and album name ID3 tag data can be displayed.

Text/File/Folder Quick Search: When you're playing a disc with CD Text, ID3, or WMA tags, you can easily search for a track or file by its title. Once you have activated the search mode, you can use the rotary encoder to quickly scan through the titles to locate the desired track.

    External Device Connection

USB: Using the rear panel USB port, you can connect and control an audio device with MP3, WMA, or AAC files and a USB jack. The female Type A USB port is located on an 8" pigtail.

iPod Full Speed: The CDA-9886 has an iPod Direct Connection mounted on a 4" pigtail on the rear panel. When used with the supplied KCE-422i Alpine Full Speed Connection cable, the receiver can interface with most Apple iPods with a dock connector. You can quickly and easily search through all of the music contained on your iPod by Playlist, Artist, Album, Song, Podcast, Genre, or Composer. You can view artist, album, song, and track number on the head unit's display. When operating your iPod through the Full Speed connection, you can use the Direct Search function in Playlist, Artist, Album, or Song mode to quickly locate your music. Using the unit's preset buttons, you can quickly jump over a designated percentage of your song content (Preset 1: 0% to 16%, Preset 2: 17% to 32%, Preset 3: 33% to 49%, Preset 4: 50% to 66%, Preset 5: 67% to 82%, Preset 6: 83% to 100% of the song library). The Alpine CDA-9886 and KCE-422i Alpine Full Speed Cable is "Made for iPod" compatible and support the following iPod model features (as of Dec. 2009):

    Worst Receiver ever!

Written By JB, Nashville, TN on Saturday, March 12, 2011

This is the worst receiver I have ever had the misfortune of owning, I am not sure what the other owners are use to that are ranking this so high.
    Let's begin

    1. Black out function sometimes will not allow you to wake receiver back up
    2. When you turn off the unit, the clock disappears too
    3. Same button for turning unit off as to select another source i.e. cd, ipod, tuner so that many times, if you don't hold the button down long enough to turn off unit, you just end up selecting something else, Very very annoying
    4. Ipod interface is terrible. Unit freezes for a few seconds every time you try to change a song or artist
    5. Audio controls are spotty. You have very little adjustment options and those options are not always available for you depending on what input source you are using. Very confusing

Basically, this is my first and last Alpine. My previous Kenwood and Sony headunits were not as expensive as this one but atleast they work and have a working clock I can see all the time

    Alpine CDA-9886

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Writing this review a month and half after buying/installing. This product is now discontinued and I could've got the 9887 for a few dollars more. Would've been nice to know this information. Knob sticks really bad, got another unit with the same problem. Overall I like this unit but like I said, had I known the 9887 price was going down I would've waited all of 40 days for it. The service I got when getting another unit was great, install was super easy with instructions provided. I don't like how the iPod Touch won't charge and I need another expensive adapter. Thats my only real complaint is getting a stepped down product days before the upgraded version goes on clearance...

    THE very best

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

this unit does everything i hoped it would do. i wouldn't take advice from anyone below in their reviews because they have no idea what they are talking about. this unit does charge the iPod. at least mine which is a first generation nano. it also shuts it off so when i get back in the car the songs are left off right where they were. and it also shuts the iPod off whenever i shut the car off. the display is also not too bright especially if you have the dimmer setting on the lowest. and if it is too bright there is a blackout function that shuts all the lights off. but this is the very first unit i have ever bought and couldn't be happier. it will fit perfectly with the alpine sub i am planing on getting from crutchfield. especially after that little thank you they sent me in the mail!

This receiver is pretty nice and I would have given it 5 stars except for a couple problems. I got the optional Alpine KCE-400BT Parrot Bluetooth Adapter which works great once you get the proper cables. If you use this with your iPod you will have to buy the KWE-460E Adapter Cable and KCE- 433iV Full Speed iPod Cable since the cables included can't be used. That's an additional $50 for cables. It seems to me that they could have made the cables compatible but chose to stick the buyer instead. I also got the PXA-H100 IMPRINT Audio Processor. It does a good but not great job of equalizing the sound. As others have noted in it's reviews it makes the sound too bright. You can correct this somewhat with the Tone controls (Sub, Bass and Treble) but the problem I found is that there is a harshness you can't get rid of so playing at loud volumes is iffy with some music. I'll redo it with the microphone in different positions to see if it helps.

This my fourth Alpine deck in 14 years and as always a truly amazing receiver, great sound, great cosmetics, great features and very user friendly. I wish it came with integrated bluetooth but there's always upgrade options. Display a little too bright.

I did quite a bit of looking around before I selected this unit. I had been wanting an Alpine unit for several years, and I am very happy with this unit. The USB feature is truly a wonderful thing. You can fill up a USB memory stick with music, plug it in, and play it all. It's like having a mini, removable hard drive for all of your music. Not really a need to use CD's anymore at all. If you need to add more music, just plug it into your computer and add copy it to your USB drive. Super easy, and very user friendly.

I have seen a few reviews commenting on how they dislike the fact that this only has a 2 band EQ. Yes, it does, but you can change the frequency of the two bands in the settings. It is a really nice feature that took me a bit of messing around to find.

Also, the built in iPod connector really works well. The head unit will control your iPod for you and display all of the track information as well. You can't go wrong with this unit at all. Enjoy!

    Awesome unit & Crutchfield Support

Written By Frankvv, Baltimore, Maryland on Sunday, March 07, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I finished the installation of my Alpine CDA 9886 today. Although I have a technical background, I still ended up calling the Crutchfield technical staff three times; once for help with the din adapter for my '02 Thunderbird, another time for clarification on how to hook up the sub-woofer, and finally with the programming for the steering wheel control adapter. I found the Alpine radio controls and programming to be very intuitive, and did not once need to resort to the manual! I was able to figure out how to pre-set FM stations and control and operate my iPod, as well as set the clock, all from just following the front panel controls. As a consumer who is over 50 years of age, I was looking for a unit that would give me great audio sound, a way to control my iPod without having wires dangling from the front, have a human interface that was straight forward, and this unit fits the bill. I am also very pleased with the pre-sale support the Crutchfield team exhibited. I went first to two other electronic stores before I ordered from Crutchfield, and the sales people at these stores were not very helpful. Ten minutes on the phone with one of Crutchfield's customer service representatives and I had what I needed. Furthermore, none of the other stores stocked the adapter kits and harness I needed for my car, so I would have been left to fend for myself. I love the fact that Crutchfield includes everything one needs to do the complete job. What a great experience! Thank you!

Good points: Function, very clean good sound quality. (Hint for ipod users. If you like your music loud & with min distortion. Use .wav files. Open them in a wave editor and reduce the volume of the file). Controls are easy to use. Internal amp can be turned off. Bio lite display is nice and easy to read except when the sun is reflecting off of it. Display has an auto off function. Ipod control does not switch to Ipod or automatically turn on the receiver when you plug the Ipod in. Mute button.

Things I don't like: Will not play a 24 bit sound file. Small buttons would be easier to see if they were red. Also why not make it user selectable, how hard could it be? The display overall is very nice when illuminated except the turquoise icon in the biolite display. It is very ugly. Make it red, white or blue to match the rest of the display but Turquoise? Turner is just OK. Pioneer super tuner III is much better. Made in China. I have yet to find a car receiver besides Blaupunkt available today that is not made in China. I find this disappointing and frustrating as a consumer.

Considering the choices we have as average consumers. The Alpine performance with exception of the tuner is excellent.

Very pleased with this unit but even more so with Crutchfield's service. During installation I had an issue with getting all sources to play. I called tech support (on a weekend no less) and the person I spoke to told me exactly which wires to change to fix the problem. It had to do with the year and model car I have. The information to fix this was not available in the manuals or anywhere i looked on the internet but the Crutchfield person knew what to do right away. I changed the wires as directed and voila - everything worked perfectly. Tell your friends - Crutchfield will take care of you. If they are $20 more etc. it is worth it in my opinion because this kind of service is hard to get. Thank you tech support, my ride is rockin!

The CDA-9886 is my second Alpine receiver and I love it better than the first. Mainly because of the "BioLite" display and the iPod controls. True that it doesn't charge the iPod, but when you switch modes, it turns it off...that is if you have the iTouch. So when I'm tired of listening to the radio or a CD, I can continue to listen to my iPod right where I left off and my battery is saved.

The display is great. No matter where you are in the car or how much light is shining, you can see everything. This was my disappointment with my last Alpine (CDA-9805).

Easy to install and easy to operate. What more could you ask for in a pretty economical head unit? Way to go Alpine!!

    Alpine CDA-9886 Ilove it

This head unit is way worth the money. I bought one for my boat. I hooked it up with three Rockford Fosgate amps (2)700x and (1) 800s with three sets of Rockford fosgates 6.5" three way power speakers, then I teamed them with (2) 12" Rockford Fosgate HX2 Big daddy woofers. I added (2) chrome 2 farad digital caps. I also added the Alpine XM unit and the water proof 100' foot range remote control. (so when your on the beach bumping, you can change stations turn it up or down flip thru the iPod and so on cool stuff) Dual batteries and Rockford Fosgates "0" power and negative power cables. I also use top of the line twisted rca patch cables. can you say Pounds hard!! Yes you can.. Plus its super clear at any volume. I liked this head unit so much I bought two more. One for my BMW and the other for my Expedition. They two sound great. They both are just as nice as my boat.. I have had Alpine since the early 80's you cant go wrong. i will only buy Alpine for my head unit... AA++++++ Thanks for looking..

    Alpine Head Unit

This is a good head unit. I think the remote control has horrible range. i have a remote from an older Alpine which I use because it has better range. this new remote that comes with the 9886 has to be pointed directly at it for it to work for me. i love the USB and 4v pre-outs. its a shame that it appears that all newer alpine's have 2v pre-outs with an additional 100 some-odd dollar adapater to make those into 4v pre-outs. another money maker for them. i like alpines for their no frills and only what is needed head units. they have good quality and this is true for the 9886

Just picked this one up for a new truck and I had the previous model. I would have to say this one is easyer to use than the last one the Ipod controls are better, Display is better and Install was a breeze. I would highly recommend this one and Crutchfield for that matter.

    Great Head Unit!!!!

Written By Allen, Kennesaw, GA on Tuesday, November 10, 2009

I have always had Alpine HUs and the 9886 has been the best by far. No glitches, problems, or complaints! It is pretty pricey but you definitely get what you pay for. The remote control is awesome too...you wouldn't think you'd use it but it makes surfing songs alot easier while driving. This unit has all the bells and whistles like telling you happy birthday and merry christmas ( not important but it's icing on the cake). And you can hook up anything to it! GO ALPINE!

    Reciever a la carte

Written By jeauboux, Tucson, AZ on Monday, November 02, 2009

The good: The display is nice and clean. The menu is very intuitive once you figure it out. I can navigate my thumb drive fairly quickly, although it doesn't display folder names.

The bad: For the price, I should get more than a 2 band equalizer. Sure, you can upgrade it with Imprint, but it'll cost you. Meanwhile, the sound is underwhelming. The 5 year old Panasonic deck in my last car blows this Alpine away.

I should be able to hook up my Sirius receiver without having to buy an adapter cable AND a connection box AND a seperate dock. I have a lifetime Sirius subscription, so to transfer to the Alpine Sirius reciever costs money. Meanwhile, I've been shopping for a new receiver for my car. End result: I've been without Sirius since I installed this deck 3 months ago, even though I've purchased 2 extra components for it.

Everything you'd really want to do with this deck will require you to buy a seperate adapter, or component, or both. I shouldn't need to install an electronics department behind my receiver to unlock the full functionality of it. This is my first Alpine deck, and it'll probably be my last unless Alpine starts including built-in features instead of add-ons.

I received the deck on the day Crutchfield said it would come in. With the detailed instructions Crutchfield gave I had my deck in and ready to play in an hour. This deck is awesome. The sound qulatiy is second to none. I am very happy with this purchase and this deck has room to grow if I want to add a amp or after market speakers. I usually don't write reviews but after I was done installing and playing I had to say something.
