Why install a car stereo with built-in GPS?

Imagine taking a trip as your car's receiver gives you directions, finds the best restaurant for dinner, and plays movies for your back seat denizens. Navigation receivers cover all the bases, with GPS guidance, DVD playback, and a host of other useful features. You can search through millions of points of interest to locate gas stations, restaurants, museums, and other interesting spots, wherever you are. Most receivers offer Bluetooth capability for hands-free calling, along with the ability to search through your iPod playlists with touchscreen controls.

Our take on the JVC KW-NT3HDT

by Zak Billmeier

Video review: One of our employees put the JVC KW-NT3HDT navigation receiver in her Jeep — and absolutely loves it. Take a look at our video to see what she had to say.

Check out JVC's page for the KW-NT3HDT.

And lifetime traffic information ensures that you take the fastest possible route to your destination.

HD Radio™ for iTunes® tagging and traffic information

HD Total Traffic Plus

Info from JVC

Total Traffic Plus — it's not just for major cities

A built-in HD Radio tuner gives you outstanding AM/FM sound quality, but it also gives you a couple of other sweet features. One is that the KW-NT3HDT can tune in the free HD Total Traffic Plus network — you'll enjoy access to real-time traffic that'll help you steer clear of traffic jams anywhere a station is broadcasting HD Radio traffic information. It's not just limited to big cities.

HD Radio's digital technology allows for data transmission more than ten times faster than satellite systems, so the KW-NT3HDT can pull in lots of useful data from digital HD Radio transmissions. Many HD Radio stations broadcast weather, sports scores, gasoline prices, and a whole lot more.

iTunes Tagging

Info from JVC

Tag the tunes you like, download them later

And as an added bonus, HD Radio makes it easier for you to stock your music library with tunes you love. With an iPod® or iPhone® connected and an HD Radio station tuned in, you can "tag" the songs you like for purchasing later from the iTunes store.

GPS

Easy-to-read maps

Easy-to-use GPS navigation

You'll see turn-by-turn directions on the screen and enjoy access to over 6 million points of interest. Text-to-speech technology calls out the name of the street for your next turn, letting you keep your eyes on the road.

You can update your maps through the SD™-card slot — you can even copy your own points-of-interest from Google Maps on your home computer, then load them onto the KW-NT3HDT using the SD card.

Powerful processor for lightning-fast operation

JVC packs the KW-NT3HD with a powerful, 400 MHz Windows Automotive processor that makes navigation, playing music, tweaking your tone, and anything else a snap. In fact, the GPS is ready to navigate in about 15 seconds after you turn on your car — no more waiting.

2-way iPod control

Info from JVC

Play music from your iPod or iPhone

Just connect your iPod or iPhone to the front USB slot, and you'll be using the receiver's controls to browse your tunes and playlists in no time. JVC's 2-Way Control lets your passengers use the iPod itself to control your music while it's connected to the radio — and you'll still see song details on the display.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Hands-on Research" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

Hands-free calling, music streaming, even audio from iPhone apps

Built-in Bluetooth® technology lets you make hands-free calls in your vehicle. When a call comes in, the receiver mutes the music and you'll hear the caller over your vehicle's speakers. Mount the included microphone in a convenient spot for maximum sound quality.

Bluetooth is about more than making phone calls, though. You can stream tunes you've loaded on a compatible device, and iPhone users will love this — you can send audio from your apps to the KW-NT3HDT over the Bluetooth connection. For instance, you can run your Pandora® app and listen to it over your speakers.

Note: Bluetooth compatibility of this device may vary, depending on your phone and service provider.

Other features

Detachable face

Info from JVC

Detachable face

The KW-NT3HDT features a detachable face — great security if you park on a city street. Stash the faceplate in the included case to keep it free from scratches.

Music and movies

Watch your favorite DVDs while you're parked, or connect a screen in the back so your passengers can watch while you drive. Load your favorite MP3 and WMA files on a CD, USB drive, or SD card — the KW-NT3HDT will play 'em all. Load a DVD full of music files and you'll have enough tunes for a road trip from Boston to San Diego. A powerful amplifier belts out your music and movies, while a 7-band EQ adjusts the sound for your vehicle. Add an optional satellite radio tuner for access to a wealth of entertainment. Three sets of gold-plated preamp outputs let you add amps and subs for a complete car entertainment system.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?

In most vehicles, you can use this adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this JVC stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the JVC, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls.

    Display Features

2-DIN Chassis: The JVC KW-NT3HDT has a 2-DIN chassis (also known as "Double DIN" or size DD), and will fit in many vehicles with a large dash opening. The unit can be ISO-mounted using factory brackets, or Euro-mounted using the supplied mounting sleeve.

Note: As always, please consult the Crutchfield Car Selector to verify fit with your vehicle.

Detachable Motorized TFT LCD Touch Screen Monitor: The KW-NT3HDT features a motorized 6.1" TFT Active Matrix, 16:9 touch screen monitor. The pixel resolution of the display is 336,960 (480 x 234 x RGB). The LCD serves as a video monitor, system information display and touch-screen control panel. The unit has a front-loading disc-slot to make loading your disc easier because there is no panel to slide or fold-down. You can detach the touch screen LCD monitor and place it in its supplied soft face case to prevent theft.

Picture Adjust: Brightness, Contrast, Color, and Tint can each be adjusted from -5 to +5.

Selectable Aspect Modes: You can choose from four aspect modes for the in-dash display when viewing a still image or video:

    • Regular: For 4:3 source material, 4:3 and 16:9 pictures display with black bars on either side (16:9 images are compressed).
    • Full: Expands 4:3 pictures horizontally to fill the entire width of the screen, distorting the picture slightly but retaining full image height.
    • Zoom: Expands a 4:3 LB image to fill the screen.
    • Auto: The correct aspect mode is automatically chosen based on the incoming signal.

Hard-Key Controls: In addition to the head unit's touchscreen monitor, the KW-NT3HDT features hard-key controls along the left edge of the screen. The controls included a rotary knob and push-button keys.

Variable Illumination: The JVC KW-NT3HDT allows you to adjust the unit's screen color and button illumination independently. It offers 7 color presets (Blue, Aqua, Green, Yellow, Amber, Red, and Purple) for the button illumination. Additionally, there is a user preset, allowing you to individually adjust the intensity of Red, Green, and Blue from 0 to 31. There is also a "Scan" setting which scans through all of the 7 available preset colors continuously. The unit's onscreen display can be set to either Blue, Aqua, Green, Yellow, Amber, Red, Purple, or White.

Dimmer: When 12 volts is applied to the illumination lead and the dimmer is set to Auto, the display dims. The dimmer can also be set to Off (normal brightness at all times), On (display is always dimmed), or Dimmer Time Set (you program the time for the dimmer to turn off and on). The unit also features 3 dimmer levels to choose from - Bright, Middle, or Dark.

Parking Brake Detection: To prevent displaying video while the vehicle is in motion, the green wire in the supplied 16-pin harness must be connected to the vehicle's parking brake detection circuit. While the vehicle is in motion (parking brake off), you can still view all of the other displays and menus.

    Built-in Navigation

Built-In Navigation: The KW-NT3HDT features a built-in GPS Navigation system with maps of the United States (including Hawaii and Alaska), Canada, and Puerto Rico; powered by Google Maps. Map data is stored on the unit's flash memory and the connected GPS antenna helps to pinpoint your vehicle's current location. Once a destination is set, the unit provides turn-by-turn voice and visual guidance through your vehicle's speakers and the unit's display monitor; using NAVTEQ navigation software.

GPS Antenna: The KW-NT3HDT features a GPS antenna with a magnetic base designed to mount to the exterior of your vehicle. The GPS antenna comes supplied with a self-adhesive pad in case you cannot find a metal surface to attach the antenna directly to.

Visual/Voice Guidance: When you approach a turn, the KW-NT3HDT guides you with voice guidance (Text-to-Speech) through your vehicle's front speakers and visual indications on the KW-NT3HDT's screen. The unit offers 3 voice guidance languages including English, Spanish and French; with adjustable volume.

Lane Guidance: The KW-NT3HDT provides Lane Guidance to help you along your route. The receiver uses the following color-codes to distinguish what lane you should be in - Yellow (recommended lane), White (lane leading to the destination), and Gray (not the lane for your destination).

Points of Interest: The built-in map database has 6 million points of interest from infoUSA. They can be searched by the following categories: Gas Station, Hotel, Parking, Restaurant, Shopping, Travel, Recreation, Entertainment, Medical, Financial, Automotive, and Community. Some of the categories are divided into sub-categories. The KW-NT3HDT can even alert you when you approach a selected POI category.

Street Director Assistant: With the Street Director Assistant feature, you can search P.O.I. data on your PC's Google Maps, and easily add to the unit via an SD card.

Note: Once the SD card is ejected, the imported POI cannot be used.

Map Views: The map scrolls automatically so that your position is always at the center of the map. You can select from different map views:

    • 2D Heading Up: The map rotates so that you are always displayed heading "upwards." The direction is displayed with a compass icon.
    • 3D Map Heading Up: The map is displayed in a "heading up" mode, and in a three-dimensional view. The direction is displayed with a compass icon.
    • 2D North Up: The map view is oriented with north "upwards," like normal paper maps. The direction you are heading to is displayed at the upper right corner of the screen with an icon such as "NE."

Night Map Mode: Night Map Mode dims the map display when driving at night. You can turn this feature On/Off or set to Auto so the map display dims when you turn on your vehicle's headlights (the unit's illumination control lead connect is required for Auto mode).

Destination Search: The JVC KW-NT3HDT offers the following Destination Search functions:

    • Browse Map: You can select a point on the map for your destination by touching the screen.
    • Home: You can register one point as your home address.
    • Favorites: You can register 100 off your favorite points so you can easily navigate to them from anywhere at any time.
    • Previous: You can search from the history of previous destinations and via points from the last 50 points.
    • Address: You can search by address using the unit's on-screen keyboard.
    • Phone: You can search a destination by entering its telephone number using the unit's on-screen keyboard.
    • POI Name: The POI Name feature allows you to search for points-of-interest by name from category listings or using the KW-NT3HDT's on-screen keyboard.
    • POI Vicinity: The POI Vicinity feature search for POIs around the following places - your current position, the position selected on the map, the destination, or the route you are taking.
    • Quick Search: You can also search POI's from three user registered categories that you use most often such as gas stations, restaurants and hotels.
    • Assistant POI: Searches from the list of POIs saved an inserted SD card, using Street Director Assistant.
    • Coordinates: You can search by entering the latitude and longitude.

Note: Moving at a specific speed (15+ MPH) engages safety measures in the navigation system to encourage safe driving. Only instantly accessible points of interest and simple menu systems are accessible unless the car is stopped. Otherwise, an address cannot be entered (the keyboard is disabled). The vehicle must be stopped and the parking brake will need to be engaged to enable these functions.

Routing Preferences: You can select how the unit will calculate your route by adjusting the following settings:

    • Route Priority: You can select the unit to either calculate the fastest timed route or shortest distant route.
    • Route Avoidance: You can select to use or avoid the following types of roads - Freeway, Toll Road, Ferry, and Bypass Traffic.

Via Points: After selecting your destination, you can select up to four places (via points) to stop by along your route.

Total Traffic HD Network Plus: The JVC in-dash  navigation receiver employs Total Traffic HD Network Plus. Total Traffic HD Network Plus delivers real-time traffic data for more than 125 metropolitan markets in four countries, including the United States, Canada, Mexico. Total Traffic HD Network Plus provides incident, event, construction, congestion, and impact information during your travels. Using this real-time traffic data, the JVC KW-NT3HDT can automatically calculate a new route when approaching a traffic event; saving you time and fuel resources, and helping to alleviate roadway stress.

NewsService Journaline: NewsService Journaline delivers hierarchically structured textual information, enabling you to easily and immediately access traffic information you are most interested in from the JVC in-dash navigation receiver. You can browse all received traffic information, both program-related and program-independent textual information, and select your favorite traffic news items.

Detour: If you realize congestion exists along your route, you can select the Detour function which allows you to select the distance to avoid along your route so the KW-NT3HDT can route you around this congested area.

Auto Recalculate: The unit will automatically recalculate your route if you veer off from the original calculated route.

Adjusting Vehicle Position: If you find your current position is displayed incorrectly on the map, you can adjust your vehicle's position/location.

Speed Alert: The system sounds an alarm when you surpass the speed limit of the current road by a set value. You can choose for the unit to alert you when you are 3, 6, 10, 15, or 20 miles over the speed limit.

Simulate: You can simulate a desired rout to confirm what your trip will look like.

    Audio Section

24 Bit D/A Converter: The JVC KW-NT3HDT utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior CD sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The KW-NT3HDT is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the KW-NT3HDT are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the KW-NT3HDT are as follows:

    • CEA2006 Specs: 20 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (200 total watts)

5ch/2.5V Preamp Outputs: The KW-NT3HDT features five 2.5V preamp outputs (Stereo Front, Stereo Rear, Mono Subwoofer). The Front and Rear set of preamp outputs fade in and out with the fader control and speaker level outputs on the stereo, while the Subwoofer preamp output is non-fading. The JVC multimedia head unit provides the following preamp level controls:

    • Subwoofer Level: Adjusts the subwoofer output level from -24to +20.
    • Low Pass Filter: Adjusts low pass crossover frequency for the subwoofer preamp output between 50-150Hz (in 10Hz intervals); the LPF slope is also adjustable (-24, -18, -12, or -6 dB).
    • High Pass Filter: You can select the unit's high pass filter cut-off frequency between 5-150Hz (in 10Hz intervals) for the front and rear speakers; the HPF slope is also adjustable (-24, -18, -12, or -6 dB).

Amplifier Gain Control: When you are using the KW-NT3HDT with factory speakers (or those rated to less than 50 watts peak), the Amplifier Gain Control can limit the amount of power being sent to those speakers. When the Amp Gain Control is set to "low," the volume control ranges from 0 (minimum) to 30 (maximum). When using speakers rated higher than 50 watts peak, you can set the Amp Gain Control to "high," and the volume control will range from 0 to 50.

7-Band Equalizer: Along with a flat preset, there are 9 preset EQ curves and three user programmable fields; Flat, Natural, Dynamic, Vocal Boost, Bass Boost, Super Bass, Rhythm, and Acoustic; as well as User 1, User 2, and User 3. The user presets can be adjusted to your preference and stored in memory. For each User preset, you can independently adjust the following frequencies: 60 Hz, 150 Hz, 40 Hz, 1 kHz, 2.5 kHz, 6.3 kHz, and 15 kHz. The level of each frequency can be adjusted from -10dB to +10dB in 2dB increments.

Source Volume: The input level of each source (other than FM) is adjustable relative to the FM radio volume, so there isn't a significant volume difference when changing sources. Each source is individually adjustable from -12 to +12.

Adaptive Volume: When this function is activate, the KW-NT3HDT automatically increase the volume level (both for Navigation and audio/video) as the car speeds up. You can set this feature to Min, Mid, Max, or Off.

Note: You must connect the unit's Speed Signal wire (pink/gray) to your vehicle's speed sensor wire.

Dynamic Range Compression: This function reduces a Dolby Digital soundtrack's dynamic range so you can hear quieter dialog without being overwhelmed by loud sections. You can choose a setting of Auto or On.

    Radio Functions

DiAS II Digital Tuner: This model is equipped with JVC's Digital Intelligent Advanced Sensing tuner that is capable of receiving digital (HD Radio) and analog AM/FM stations.

Built-in HD Radio: With the built-in HD Radio tuner, you can receive digital AM/FM broadcasts from local stations where available. This new technology will significantly improve audio quality and reception, as well as include information such as artist name and song titles or traffic news, viewable on the receiver's display. HD Radio Technology will deliver high-quality digital sound. AM digital will have FM-like quality in stereo, while FM digital will have CD-like quality with static free and clear reception.

Note: Right now there are about 2,000 radio stations broadcasting using digital HD Radio technology in the U.S. To find HD Radio stations in your area, visit the HD Radio website (HDRadio.com).

HD Radio Tagging: Using the head unit's iTunes Tagging enabled HD Radio, you can tag your HD music (up to 60 songs) while listening to the radio with your iPod connected. When you hear a song you enjoy on your local HD Radio station, you only have to press the head unit's "Tag" button and the song's information will be saved to your connected iPod. The saved songs will then show up in a playlist called "Tagged" in iTunes the very next time you sync your iPod to your PC. Then you just need to click, buy, and download the song you tagged directly from the Apple iTunes Music Store. You can enjoy iTunes Tagging with the following iPod/iPhone models (as of May 2010).

I LIKE It! Been Testing It For Several Months!

Written By Homeboy981, Dallas, TX on Tuesday, April 10, 2012

I LOVE this unit! Have installed it in my Porsche Boxster and IT ROCKS!! Of course, I added the backup camera option and use a 1200 watt Amplifier on it to get the sound I need. It PUTS OUT!! I like the option of gathering 10-15 houses I am going to look at everyday and planning them on the computer and using the SD Card to plug it into the unit. From there it is on Auto-Pilot! If I need to change my trip (for food or gas) the unit is EASY to RE-CALCULATE without driving off the road! Love the sound customization features too! I have it set up with just the right amount of bass and the perfect "sweet spot"of the music. That is saying a lot considering this car has had tons of customers who were disappointed in a "$60k car with $10k car sound system." Now I am living the dream..great car with great sound! Thanks JVC!!!
    Pros:
NAV system is spot on - only an occasional mistake! Sound is impressive! SD card holds tons of routes and MP3s for days. I also have a USB thumb drive with over 9 days of music WITHOUT LISTENING TO THE SAME SONG TWICE!!! I used to have 10 MP3 discs - now they are a thing of the past! Love the backup camera feature! It is really good resolution! It tells me Hello! every morning and reminds me to remove unit by saying "Goodbye" (or whatever you program it to say).
    Cons:
Installation was brutal because this unit has so many features but I took a weekend and good instructions and got it done.

Installed in a 2008 Chevrolet Malibu

    Review revised 5/9/12
This nav/receiver has everything to bring your older car audio experience up to today's new-car standards. I was a bit put off about tearing into the center console of my wife's 2008 Chevy Malibu to install it but Crutchfield's instructions were spot-on. Could've gotten this a bit cheaper elsewhere but glad I didn't, sold on Crutchfield's tech support and custom mounting kit. Hardest part of the install was the rear backup camera: locating and mounting the camera in the rear bumper, finding a reverse gear power lead to tap into in the trunk and running the video cable up to the radio. Once done, though, glad I did it.
    Pros:
Great nav features; lots of input options; reverse camera works great; speed limit warning a nice touch. Fantastic Crutchfield support.
    Cons:
    None!

    JVC KW-NT3HDT

Written By DonF, San Antonio, TX on Wednesday, January 25, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have still not learned all the things this unit can do but, for the things I have used so far it is wonderful! I had it installed, the pros took only an hour. I have used the nav system and it works as advertised. I have used the USB port to play music from an iPod and an iPad both functioned perfectly and access to select playlists, artists, songs and albums is easy. I loaded an SD card with music and it plays equally as well as other audio sources. The radio section works well in whatever mode it is used.
    Pros:
Once learned the controls are easy to use, audio quality is good, nav system works well.
    Cons:
I loaded an SD card with the online update then loaded into the unit. It found the update and downloaded it. The problem is the maps are still way outdated.....

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The JVC KW-NT3HDT Navigation Reciever has been a great product. The blue tooth is amazing and my friends and family say it sounds like I am speaking on a land line. The DVD, CD, IPod, HD Radio are first rate. The GPS could come better programmed but it serves its purpose. Also slight clabration issues with the GPS where sometimes it has me positioned slighlty off the route and misses some of the destinations by several hundred yards. It usually corrects itself but you can tell it is not as efficient as a some of the other units on the market
    Pros:
Great audio, DVD, HD Radio, IPod playback and Satelite radio.
    Cons:
    GPS could be improved.

    Installed in a 2000 Toyota 4Runner
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I originally planned to purchase this item at a local big box retailers and have them install it in my 2001 Toyota 4Runner. After they told me that I would have to come back the next day for installation I decided to purchase the item through Crutchfield and perform the installation myself. It had been a few years since doing my own install but figured I could still perform the task. This system was a lot more complex than the simple "Cassette" decks I remember installing. I did run into a snag during the install so thought I would call their support team and would hopefully get lucky. To my surprise, someone answered right away (this was late Saturday night) and talked me through the process. I was very impressed and would highly recommend this product and Crutchfield! They saved me a lot of time and headache, not to mentioned the install fee the other place was going to charge.
    Pros:
    Excellent product and service.
    Cons:
    None.

    Great Stereo

Written By Don H., Bronx New york on Saturday, January 21, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This readio is great for the price. and has many great features Like the GPS and voice guidance. The one bad thing about the voice guidance is when it tells you to TURN NOW and you are 100 feet from where you have to turn. But not a big deal. Live Traffic and Info is great. the sound quality is just great. Just have to upgrade speakers. Overall. I would recommend this to anybody.
    Pros:
GPS, Voice Guidance, Live Traffic & Info ( Sport scores/News? Etc. ) easy to use functions, Volume knob, USB, Aux Jack, Diff Colors, Back up Camera, Fast and accurate GPS Signal. And so much more.
    Cons:
When it says {TURN NOW} and you still have another 100 feet to go. But just a minor glitch. And when I was working on the radio i lost my Live Traffi and Information. Had to do a HARD RESET. By disconnecting the (+) battery on my Car. All working OK.

Installed in a 2003 Lincoln Navigator
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Product was delivered as promised. Crutchfield included an installation guide and faceplate specific to my vehicle at no charge. Except for the fact that the maps are a little out of date and that I haven't yet been able to find updated maps - even though I have contacted JVC, Navteq and Crutchfield I couldn't be happier with this purchase.
    Pros:
Really easy user interface - touchscreen. Phone and music sync over Bluetooth works great. Unit looks terrific.
    Cons:
Maps are out of date and map updates are not available

    Not Bad for the price

Installed in a 2004 Honda Pilot
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Instal was less that 2 hrs, sounds great but be sure to go to JVC web site and update the program / GPS. They have a newer update and everything improved with it. The nagging speed warning is sometimes a drag on the GPS. Also the Map maker charges $150 for an update that is well over 9 months old. The JVC update has streets that are about a year old around where I live so it must be updating the GPS map too.

So far it has accurately displayed location but yet have used the directions function. Bluetooth worked and linked flawlessly with my Motorola Droid X, and people say that they can not tell the difference between the phone direct and going through the radio.

Use USB thumb drive with No Loss MP3's and it sounds great. Other than some small annoyances that are standard on GPS only devices not much bad to say about the unit. Even the update was easy and fast to do. Only about 10 min. at most actually updating the flash memory.
    Pros:
Price and features. Sound is very good with the 7 band EQ and that's with OEM '04 Honda Pilot standard DVD 6 speaker system.
    Cons:
GPS could use more options to adjust look and feel. HD traffic has yet to Work.

    WOW!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had a nice Kenwood KTC-HR300 in my Scion xB for 2 months and hated how slow it was. Tore it out and put in this JVC. It's the best unit I've ever owned. It's about my 12 after-market unit puchased in my lifetime.

The functions and controls are superfast and easy. Weather, traffic & news is a nice added feature with the lifetime HD Total Traffic Plus for free. I have an iPod classic 160gb and this unit makes it a breeze controlling it. I also bought the JVC rearview camera, very nice.

I have a Garmin Zumo and a TomTom XXL 550 TM in other vehicles and this GPS is almost as good. This GPS is very nice after you get used to it and can be just a bit "clunky". I updated my maps via NAVTEQ and it cost like $100. The thing that ticked me off is that they do not offer a lifetime map option and they also charged $9 shipping for an SD card with sales tax too.

I would recommend and purchase this unit again.
    Pros:
    SUPERfast, easy and nice looking.
    Cons:
Map updates are expensive and no lifetime option.

    JVC NT3HDT with XMDIRECT2

Written By Glen H, Memphis. TN on Tuesday, November 29, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this unit with steering wheel controls, and xm radio and I must say it is not for the faint of heart. The only problem encountered was no instructions for hooking up the power to the xmdirect2 unit. The Audiovox xm unit came with a yellow and black wire, but no where in the instructions did it tell you these were the power wires. I came to this conclusion after installing and no xm. The JVC instructions gave me the best clue by telling me the radio did not provide pwr through the plug connection. It took me awhile to determine the yellow wire of the xm had to be connected to an always on power supply and the black to ground. Having this information would have made the install a bit easier. All other instructions were very accurate and helpful. The techs were helpful.
    Pros:
The stereo sound quality is great and sinking up my cell phone was simple and straight forward. Everyone I've talked to over the phone always comment on how clear it sounds. Programming stations on HD and XM was real easy.
    Cons:
From reading previous reviews I knew there maybe some small glitches in nav system. I've only used it once and there was one small problem with directions. After I made the correct turn it performed flawlessly and took me straight to my destination.

    JVC KW-NT3HDT

Written By Mark R, Westminster, MD on Sunday, November 06, 2011

Over all the audio features of this unit are everything I wanted. The GPS has a few quirks that take a little getting used to: 1)For safety reasons some functions that require a lot of input are disabled while the vehicle is moving. You can not key in an address while the car is moving but you can select from a list of previously entered addresses. 2)To search for a gas station or restaurant while the vehicle is moving you have to have set one of the "quick search" keys ahead of time. I have mine set for "gas", "restaurant" and "hotel" which are the things I would normally want to insert into an active route. 3)I find it easier to find an address by entering the zip code as opposed to the name of the city or town. Sometimes the unit won't find addresses if you enter a town name and the address is on the edge of the town, it doesn't seem to have this problem when you use the zip code. 4)The unit doesn't allow entry of some street numbers. For instance yesterday I wanted to enter an address of 3365 Crain Hwy. After pressing "3", "3", "6" the only option for the last digit was "0". It got me to the right block but the wrong side of a divided highway. None of these prevent the unit from being usable and it's always got me where I wanted to go.
    Pros:
HD radio and blue tooth integrated into unit make using these features easier then units requiring add on modules. Also, being able to play large numbers of CDs from an SD memory card means I don't have to fumble with changing CDs while I'm driving.
    Cons:
As mentioned in a previous review, the fit of the detachable panel is so tight to the installation kit it's hard to remove.

    Everything Worked Immediately

Written By Erik, Maryland on Wednesday, November 02, 2011
Installed in a 1999 Toyota Camry LE
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The moment I got it, I read the quick manual to connect the harness to be compatible with my car. I took about an hour using the posi-connectors.

Unplugged the battery and removed the old system from car and reused the hardware that can be used to install. Every hole for bolts lined up perfectly. Did not have room to install the frame, but the whole system fit perfectly.

Plugged the battery back and turned on the ignition and voila!, everything wokked. I've had this unit for about a month now and still worked well. I only gave it 4 stars because the head protrudes out by 7/16" and also the sound is a little less better than the original sound even fooling around with the equalizer.
    Pros:
    1. Easy install on my 1999 Camry 2. HD Radio without additional component 3. Bluetooth. Picked up my Android Incredible music without turning on my phone 4. Clock on Navigation without having to adjust for DST. 5. Traffic on map 6. Information on music in SD card
    Cons:
    1. The removable protrudes 7/16" out and does not look OEM. 2, My work does not show up in the navigation address although the address had been around for around 50 years 3. The clock and other info are too small to see. It might have something to do with eyeglasses.

    Questionable at best

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've had a couple different gps units and this is the first I've ever run accross that didn't allow you to make an addtional stop or change a destination while you are in motion. You're on a freeway and running out of gas, search for a station ? Not with this unit unless you pull over on the freeway and stop. Hotel ? restaurant ? Nope, gotta stop. It's totally useless. Who ever goes anywhere and doesn't need a stop along the way. Worse yet, if you go to JVC and check customer reviews, you'll only see 2 and they are both raves. THey won't post a customer review (i've tried 4 of various levels of displeasure) that's isn't good. That shows me they have no interest in their product once it's sold. The radio is pretty good. I would love to have a volume that is't stepped and turns lower than the lowest setting on this one, but that's a common problem that I've found on all radios in this range, so can't fault them without faulting the whole series. In the end, if you're looking for a great radio, buy a radio and not a nav/radio unit. If you're looking for a nav, get a portable garmin or spend the money on the kenwood. This unit is garbage.
    Pros:
It does have a decent sound and is quick to power on and display map. The map does have an update while it did take some time to make it to production.
    Cons:
The GPS unit is unusable. You cant make a change to the route or search for gas, hotel, etc while you're moving.

    GREAT BUY

Written By Tom S, Fernley, NV on Wednesday, October 26, 2011

The best automotive stereo/navigation system I've ever purchased! The speed of the internal processor beats the competitors hands-down. The features this unit has are amazing, and the hands-free device works excellent. I paid more for my unit than currently advertised, so it's a steal at the advertised price!
    Pros:
Clarity of the hands-free device. All other features!
    Cons:
    Nothing.

    works as advertised

Written By audit16, PA on Wednesday, October 26, 2011

had the receiver for more than a year. works great. just re-installed it in our 2008 Honda CRV, and got the installation adapter from Crutchfield. as noted in a previous review, a less than great adapter kit for the installation. while the unit fits with the adapter, the design of the adapter piece makes it virtually impossible to make the install look professional. the unit does not / cannot sit flush to the adapter with the current design. as a result, the look of the installation is not as "perfect" as i prefer (depends on your expectations, i guess). also, as previously stated, the kit for the CRV only has two points to attach screws for mounting (plastic brackets) compared to four metal brackets in the stock installation. still, it seems to be generally pretty solid.
    Pros:
easy install, excellent sound quality, good GPS and bluetooth
    Cons:
    installation kit sub-standard

    Well worth the money

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have had my JVC KW-NT3HDT Navitagion Receiver for about a month. I also purchased the XM Radio kit and the Steering wheel control module for the radio. The radio sounds better than the factory Bose radio it replaced in my 2009 Nissan Altima.. So Far I have tried everything but the IPOD connection and everything works as advertised. Initially, the XM did not work but an update of the firmware took care of the problem. If you are used to Garmin, the Navigation will seem a little strange but all manufacturers do things a little differently.. Some of the navigation features such as the speed limit reminder, referred to as the "NAG" are active even when the navigation is not in use. It can be set to 3, 6, or 9 mph over the speed limit and once you exceed the speed limit for the road and setting, if it is in the database, It will remind you to please observe the speed limit. The blue tooth works well but must be answered from the screen and does not support voice commands as did the Nissan blue tooth. The Nissan external microphone works flawlessly with the Blue tooth. As I do not stream audio, I can't comment about that. I will be buying a second unit for my RV
    Pros:
    just about everything.
    Cons:
The mounting kit. The only problem I had is that the mounting kit only leaves about 1/16".clearance around the radio. If the radio is installed so that the screen is flush with the mounting kit, then the screen does not have sufficient room for it to be removed. This requires the screen to extend about ¼" beyond the front of the mounting kit for screen removal to work.

    Best Bang for the buck

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I searched high and low for the best car stereo for the money. After doing my homework I found that this GPS receiver offered exceptional features at a great price. The sound quality is great and the live traffic updates and news makes waiting in your vehicle a pleasure. The live traffic updates will also reroute you around the traffic problems and save you valuable time. The Ipod interface is flawless and offers you the ability to stream music wirelessly using the bluetooth audio control. this unit is so feature packed I could go on for days talking about everything this unit is capable of.

    Works amazingly

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This head unit was a breeze to install into my 2010 mazda 3. It took 10 minutes to hook everything up and get it to work. The touch screen works great and bluetooth is good. It does have trouble connecting to my tablet every once in a while. Other than that, the navigation works great and the speed (even not hooked up to my speed sensor) is dead on. Easy to navigate UI and crutchfield was amazing at giving me my proper receiver adapter even though I didn't have it with my order. Thanks.
