Kenwood

Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Our take on the Kenwood Excelon KDC-X395

by Ken Nail

Kenwood Excelon car stereos offer strong performance with the assurance of a 2-year warranty. The KDC-X395 CD receiver is the junior member of the Excelon lineup, but it includes features and functionality designed for avid car audio fans, including a front-panel USB input, high-voltage preamp outputs, and other options for system expansion.

KDC-X395

Ready to go with your iPod®

Connect your player to the receiver's front-panel USB input, then press the "iPod" button to the right of the main control knob to access your player. Kenwood makes it so easy to navigate your tracks and playlists — dedicated "Search" and "Return" keys limit the need to work through menus when you're looking for a specific song.

You can also switch quickly to "passenger mode" to control your iPod or iPhone® from the device, useful if you're listening to streaming content like Internet radio stations. Once your iPod's connected, this Kenwood uses its own digital-to-analog converter to turn digital files into music, so you'll hear cleaner sound with less noise.

Plenty of entertainment options

The front-panel auxiliary input offers an instant connection for a satellite radio or another sound source. You can play all kinds of CDs, even discs that you've loaded with MP3 and WMA files. You can add a Kenwood HD Radio™ tuner or satellite radio to experience the best in radio. Kenwood's optional Bluetooth® adapter gives you the added safety of hands-free calling with compatible phones — just touch a button to answer a call and keep your hands on the wheel while you talk.

System building

rear panel

If you're adding outboard amps, you'll appreciate the clean signal from the three sets of 4-volt preamp outputs. The System E's crossover offers high- and low-pass filters, so you can trim low bass out of your speakers and adjust the character of your bass.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Kenwood stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and this Kenwood, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

    Display Features

Detachable Face: The Kenwood Excelon KDC-X395 features a single front loading CD face that detaches from the chassis to deter theft. The head unit includes a cloth pouch for storing the face-plate when detached. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

Note: An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can also be purchased for this unit.

Fluorescent Display: The Kenwood head unit features a 14-segement, 13-character bluish white backlit fluorescent display with blue button illumination.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: When the unit is in Standby mode, the face/button illumination is "keyed." In addition, while the unit is in Standby mode, you can turn the clock display on or off. When the Clock Display is turned on and the unit is in Standby mode, the Clock Display is also "keyed." Pressing and holding the source button turns the unit off completely.

Display Dimmer: The display has two brightness settings to adjust the brightness of the display according to the surrounding illumination. You can change this setting within the menu from On or Off.

Demo Mode: This unit features a Demo mode which can be turned "on" or "off" within the menu.

    Audio Section

24 Bit D/A Converter: The Kenwood Excelon KDC-X395 utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior CD sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The Kenwood Excelon KDC-X395 is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit. The power output specs for the KDC-X395 are as follows:

    • Full Bandwidth Power: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20-20kHz, 1% THD)
    • Maximum Output Power: 50 watts x 4 channels

Rotary Volume Control: The CD receiver uses a 3-way rotary volume control that increases and decreases the volume of the stereo from 0 to 35. The rotary knob also controls other audio settings such as Balance, Fader, Bass, Mid, Treble and preset EQ settings. In addition, the rotary knob allows you to scroll through and select your music tracks when the Music Search function is activated.

Volume Offset: The level of each source may be independently adjusted to prevent radical leaps in output volume when switching from one source to another. The available settings range from -8 to 0 (-8 to +8 for Aux source).

Supreme Setting: When MP3 and WMA files encoded at a low bit rate (less than 96 kbps, 44.1k, 48kHz) are played, the Supreme Setting function restores their high frequencies so the sound quality is closer to files encoded at a high bit rate. The processing is optimized for the compression format and the bit rate used. When the Supreme Setting is Off, the unit plays the original sound stored in the audio file.

Speaker Settings: The Speaker Setting function tailors the System Q Sound Control settings according to the type of speakers in your vehicle. You may select a Speaker Setting of "SP Off" (flat), "SP OEM" (for OEM factory speaker systems), "SP 6x9/6" (for systems with 6" and 6"x9" speakers), or "SP 5/4" (for systems with 4" and 5" speakers).

System Q Sound Control: Eight EQ curves are preset into memory, allowing you to recall the best preset EQ curve for different types of music. Each preset has its own level settings for bass (100Hz), midrange (1kHz), and treble (12.5kHz). You can choose from the following preset EQ curves - Rock, Pops, Easy, Top 40, Jazz, Natural, Game, and User.

Detail Audio Control: The Excelon KDC-X395 features independent Bass, Treble and Midrange control when the System Q Sound Control is in User mode. The Detail Audio Control allows you to adjust the following settings for the Bass, Treble and Mid frequency levels.

    3-Band EQ Detailed Audio Settings
Center Frequency Q-Factor Bass Extension Level
    Bass 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 100, 120, or 150 Hz 1.00, 1.25, 1.50, or 2.00 On/Off -8 to +8
    Midrange 0.5k, 1.0k, 1.5k, or 2.0k Hz 1.00 or 2.00 N/A
    Treble 10.0k, 12.5k, 15.0k, or17.5k Hz N/A N/A

Bass Boost: The Kenwood CD receiver also features a Bass Boost control that can be set to the following levels - LV1, LV2 or Off.

Source Tone Memory: This feature allows you to store System Q bass, middle and treble tone settings for each source (CD, Tuner, Aux, and USB).

6ch/4V Preamp Outputs: The KDC-X395 features front, rear and subwoofer 4-volt preamp outputs. The front and rear speaker preamp outputs are balance and fade adjustable. The subwoofer preamp output is non-fading. The front, rear, and subwoofer preamp outputs are fixed to the rear chassis of the head unit.

Front & Rear High-Pass Filter: The KDC-X395 features an independent High-Pass Crossover for the front & rear channels when your front & rear speakers are connected by the unit's speaker-outputs or preamp-outputs. You can adjust the high-pass crossover from "Through", 40, 60, 80, 100, 120, 150, or 180, 220Hz. The "Through" selection is a full-range setting. This feature is very helpful when you have smaller-type speakers in the front and larger-type speakers installed in the rear of the vehicle.

Subwoofer Controls: The Kenwood Excelon KDC-X395 provides the following subwoofer preamp output controls.

    • Low-Pass Filter: The receiver features a built-in Low Pass Filter control for the unit's subwoofer preamp output. You can select from 50, 60, 80, 100, 120Hz, or "Through". The "Through" setting allows your external amplifier's crossover network to do all the filtering for your subwoofer.
    • Subwoofer Phase: You can adjust the phase of the subwoofer output between 180-degrees (Reverse) or 0-degrees (Normal).
    • Subwoofer Level: You can independently control the subwoofer preamp output level from the CD receiver. You select levels between -15 to +15.

Tel Mute: The Excelon KDC-X395 features a cell-phone mute wire (brown) in its harness that when hooked up to your car's phone system mute wire will automatically mute the receiver's audio signal when a call comes in.

Key Beep: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

Aux In: The unit is equipped with a front panel 3.5mm minijack auxiliary input that can be used to input audio from a portable audio source, such as a portable MP3 player. The Excelon KDC-X395 allows you to select the source type displayed when using the auxiliary input. You can choose from AUX, DVD, Portable, Game, Video, or TV. The Aux input must be turned on to function. The unit has 3 auxiliary input modes.

    • On1: Outputs the sound of the external unit connected to the Aux terminal when switched to the Aux source.
    • On2: Activates the attenuator function when turning on the power with the auxiliary source selected. This prevents the noise when no external unit is connected to the Aux terminal. Turn off the attenuator function when listening to output from an external unit.
    • Off: Disables the selection of the Aux source.

Rear Auxiliary Input "Ready": The unit already features a front panel auxiliary input, but if you need a second auxiliary input, one can be added to the rear of the unit. When used with an optional adapter, this unit can accept a rear input from an auxiliary source. When the CA-C1AUX adapter (113CAC1AX, sold separately) is used, you cannot connect an optional HD/Satellite Radio tuner to the head unit because the adapter plugs into the DIN changer control connection on the head unit.

    Bluetooth/Remote Control

Bluetooth Ready: The unit is Bluetooth compatible using the optional Kenwood KCA-BT300 Bluetooth adapter (113BT300, sold separately). The Kenwood KCA-BT300 Bluetooth adapter allows you to make and receive calls on your Bluetooth-equipped cellular telephone, including the Apple iPhone, through the Kenwood Excelon in-dash head unit. You can even download your Phonebook information from your compatible mobile phone into the head unit. You can also stream music from a Bluetooth enabled mobile phone or digital audio player. You are able to register up to five compatible Bluetooth cell phones when using the KCA-BT300 adapter.

Note: Not all Bluetooth enabled mobile phones will be compatible with this unit. Please visit Kenwood.com for a complete list of compatible Bluetooth enabled phones.

Wireless Remote Control: The Excelon KDC-X395 comes with an IR remote control (RC-405) for wireless operation of the head unit. The remote will control Audio, CD, USB, and Tuner functions. It is powered by a single CR2025 3V lithium-cell battery (supplied).

    Installed in a 1989 Chevrolet Cavalier Z24
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Couldn't have a better system for my 1989 Z-24 caviler. It fits like it was factory installed. Easy to install and use.
    Pros:
Even a caveman or an old man like me can install.
    Cons:
Got the wrong hook up for the stereo to the car,but you guys really helped me out and sent the correct one.

    Installed in a 1998 GMC G Series
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I love the kenwood products, this is probably the 5th head unit I have purchased from Crutchfield, You can't beat the price and installation accessories make it easy to install with simple hand tools. The installation sheet makes it easy (a factory manual helps)
    Pros:
I thought the single knob would make it difficult but its so easy to tune and adjust the settings the way you want.
    Cons:
only wish it had a dimmer feature to attach to the factory wiring but it's not excessively bright or distracting at night.

Even An Old Guy Can Install this Unit!

Written By KEITH, on Friday, January 18, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I finished the install of this unit this afternoon and was blown away by the fact that it not only worked but worked great! I installed 8 track deck units and speakers in my dad's business in the 70's. I haven't done one since and was completely sure I would blow up my factory Bose system in my 2003 Suburban. Now the truck is ready to be put to pasture as a work truck around my gentleman's horse ranch on the weekends so I figured what the heck, I don't need a radio to pick up lumber from Home Depot! So the unit came in last night along with the Crux module. I opened it up and read the instructions. Now for a young guy all this stuff may have seemed simple but for an old coot it looked pretty daunting. And the instructions from the Crux box required taking off the reading glasses and putting the eye ball on the sheet. But I made it through (my wife brought me her sewing magnifying glass) and I wired that harness up. Struggled a little getting the old unit out simply because I forgot about reaching in behind the unit and stretching the wires up so I could get to the leads. A little more hand strength would have come in handy. Anyway, got it out, hooked up the harness and put the negative cable back on the battery. Turned the key and the darn thing worked! Not only did it work it sounded awesome while it was still hanging out of the dash! Buttoned it all up and took it for a spin. 100x better sound than the old unit. Not bad being 40 years out of practice! Buy it!
    Pros:
I had to call Customer Service (AJ) and ask him why I didn't have a matching orange wire on my Kenwood harness. He didn't even try to make me feel stupid! He listened to my other dumb questions and patiently answered them. After I talked to AJ I felt empowered to finish the harness and finish the install. Thanks AJ!
    Cons:
I have not figured out why my Galaxy will not play Pandora through the USB port. My iPhone works great. Probably operator error. No other issues!

Installed in a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is the 3rd Kenwood reciever that I have owned and the second KDC-X395. The most recent application i installed was in my 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the upgraded factory Infinity system. Install was easy on this, but previous installed one in my 2000 Cadillac Escalade, and the install sheet help ALOT!.

Unlike the Escalade with the Bose setup, the Jeep did not required bypassing the amp or using an interface, so it bolted right in. With the factory speakers and amp in place, the sound already was much better! I like the 3 amp outputs there which really help build my system. I didnt get too crazy with the most recent one in the Jeep only adding a single 12" sub with a 750w amp. The sub combined with the factory amp and speakers sounds AMAZING! this is the best sounding system ive had in a vehicle... not the loudest, but the best sounding. I had a much bigger setup in the 2000 Escalade which i used an interface (bought through Crutchfield) with 2 12" subs pushed by a 1200w amp and 2 additional 6x9's puched by a 250 watt amp, with still an additional output for another amp!

Comparable to the other Kenwood reciever i had, this one is much more user friendly, and the Ipod interface works great!

I love this headunit, which is why i bought it twice for 2 different vehicles and have recommended it to friends looking for great sound on a budget. For the price and the additional stuff Crutchfield provides, its the best deal out there!
    Pros:
Great value for the price. User friendly with great Ipod interface. 3 amp outputs.
    Cons:
Not as "flashy" as others (single color display).

    It's good

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It's wasn't really hard to install it hooked up to my amp and sub and speakers and controls them very nicely. Looks nice but I wish I had got one with more than one color. And the instal kit it comes with looks very nice and fits perfectly.
    Pros:
Sounds great, has plenty of sound features, plays from iPhone while charging, you can use music app while plugged in or you can use the decks controls. I never installed a deck or radio and I did this by myself just fine.
    Cons:
Only lights up blue, the text could be easier to read

Installed in a 2001 Nissan Xterra
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The cd changer in my original radio of my 2001 Nissan Xterra decided to stop working so I decided to replace it. I wasn't looking for anything special and have heard all good things about Crutchfield so I decided to give it a shot. I haven't installed a radio for 15 plus years but the kit and instructions that Crutchfield supplied were top notch. The radio itself was exactly what I was looking for. I wanted a radio with a cd player, but having the usb and aux in on this radio has made the deal all that much better. I'm not a huge audio guy but like to crank the tunes once in a while. This Kenwood puts out some decent sound through my factory speakers. I based my purchase on previous reviews of this radio and so far I've been extremely satisfied. I would definately recommend and purchase from Crutchfield again if the need arises. The install went smooth, the fit and finish of the radio looks extremely clean. Overall between the service and selection from Crutchfield, the radio, and the installation process I am extremely satisfied. I normally do not do reviews for products I purchase online but felt this experience should be noted!
    Pros:
USB and ipod connectivity. Excellent power and sound. Clean nice looking finished installation. Radio has the features I was looking for at a very good price.
    Cons:
None thus far. I'm completely satisfied!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I ordinarily lack the patience, skill, and mindset to take on do it yourself jobs, but I can honestly say that Crutchfield made this experience simple and fun. Installing the receiver, and 4 speakers took me 2.5 hours and would've been much faster had I not been working outside in the dark in the dead of winter! Everything sounds fantastic. I have the EQ set to one of the automatic settings and it suits my needs perfectly. I really like this receiver, and it works well with my IPhone. Navigating music on the IPhone through the receiver is a chore, but there is a setting where you navigate through the phone itself. The buttons on the receiver are a little small and it is a bit complicated to navigate, but with time, I will get it.
    Pros:
    Ease of installation. Great sound.
    Cons:
    Buttons are small. Confusing navigation.

Easy to install. Looks good. I mainly use it with my iPod in "Hands On" mode. Just the deck itself made my components sound so much better. My bass is on the second to lowest setting and it still hits. My Alpine Type R SWR-12D4 just came in and now I'm waiting on my MRX-M110 amp and I'll be set!!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

While I think Kenwood has always been a top notch audio company,I believe in my opinion this design could have been more user friendly. That being siad I picked it,so I'm to blame for any "flaws" I did not foresee. I'm speaking ONLY of the size of the buttons that are cramped on the far left side. They are extremely small and hard to use while driving. If I have to take my eyes off the road to look for more than a second or two, then its too long.A second "knob" type utility like the Volume/function knob would have been easier to use,and keep your fingers on to select useage. Overall the unit looks great! The sound is great considering the Max power and RMS ratings. I put this headunit in a 2003 Ranger Edge, and it fit perfectly THANKS to CRUTCHFIELD! Dont judge your purchase on my one "gripe". Just being honest, but for the buck its a good buy.

Great head unit ... way more features than I was expecting for the money.
    Pros:
IPod and headphone jack in the front! Remote control! Easy Ipod controls!
    Cons:
Wish they had a USB in the back ... to hide the cord. Ability to change the "blue" colors to green or red would be nice.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just put this radio into an 04 ford explorer. Bought this unit the day after Christmas and was delivered to my door the next afternoon. All of the directions were to the point and very easy to read. The unit does everything that you would expect and more. I now have a Kenwood amp and 2 12" subs in a box in the trunk connected to this radio. Installation was a breeze. I think i spent more time fixing the fuse holder attached to the amp then installing the radio. Splicing existing wires with the new radio didn't take 15 minutes. Not a bad thing to say about the radio, the subs, or the amp. Everything went perfectly!! I would recommend this radio to anyone. My favorite part about Crutchfield products is the directions and assistance they give all their customers from the get-go. I love this radio!!
    Pros:
Easy installation, excellent directions, looks BA, louder than anticipated, 6 channel was a perfect fit for my system.
    Cons:
    ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!

Crutchfield offered the perfect solution that met every criteria my daughter had for her perfect car audio system. The Excelon KDC-X395 has Bluetooth, USB interface for the i-phone, CD player and digital FM/AM reciever. Fantastic price for all the features.

    Awesome Head Unit

Written By AustinC, Chattanooga, TN on Wednesday, December 26, 2012
Installed in a 1993 Nissan Sentra
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great Head Unit. I have bought 2 of them for 2 different cars, one for me and one for my dad's car after I saw how well it worked in my car.

I was attracted to it because of its capabilities for building a system. I started off by just adding the head unit, but I still had factory speakers, then I added Rockford Fosgate Speakers later on. After that I got a 4 channel alpine amp for the speakers and a 2 channel alpine amp for my alpine sub. It sounds great now. Very impressed. But it sounded great even with my factory speakers. It was a huge difference in sound quality, as should be expected when adding any aftermarket head unit.

After I saw how good the Head Unit was, I put one in my dad's car with Polk Audio speakers. It sounds excellent as well. I really like the fact that it has 4v preamp outputs, and that it has 3 of them. I also like how you can tailor it to your specific setup with the equalizers and everything. Most of the other head units in this price range do not feature this, they just have preset equalization options. For the price it can't be beat. Best entry-level head unit on the market. Definitely recommend for someone who is on a budget, but needs a head unit that can grow with your system.
    Pros:
3 4-volt Preamp Outputs, equalizers, sound quality, easy to use, price
    Cons:
I wish it could change colors like a lot of the other head units. Small complaint, definitely not a deal breaker. Buy it now.
