Today's point-and-shoot cameras make great pictures easier than ever

From baby's first steps, to that dream vacation in the islands, these cameras make it easy to capture life's greatest hits. Today's cameras have helpful automatic features, like face detection and scene recognition that make shooting more foolproof than ever. And they all have plenty of megapixels for detailed photos that stay sharp, even when you enlarge and print them.

Our take on the Kodak EasyShare C143

by Meredith Krebs
Kodak EasyShare

You remember capturing that amazing picture of the kids at last — the one where everyone was smiling, no one was fighting, and everyone was clean. But when you finally have a chance to upload it to Facebook® to share with family and friends, you can't find it. Is it still on your SD card along with the hundreds of vacation photos you have stored there? Or maybe you moved it onto to your PC's hard drive, nestled somewhere in one of your picture folders?

Snap. Organize. Share.
There's a much simpler way to organize your photos: let Kodak's C143 takes over that task for you. With its handy face recognition feature, this camera can organize photos of up to 20 people by name so you can find the pictures again later. Plus, with just the touch of a button, you can tag your favorites for uploading to your favorites to Facebook, Flickr, and Kodak Gallery. The next time you connect the camera to your PC, your images are automatically posted to the galleries you choose.

The smart thinking doesn't stop there. Smart Capture analyzes the scene when you're framing your shots and quickly adjusts to one of the camera's many settings (like Sunset or Portrait) automatically.

The camera has 32MB internal memory, which will hold just a few photos, so you'll need to add SD or SDHC memory cards to store your photos and videos.

So go ahead and snap, organize and share. It's just that easy.

    Supplied Software

    Features

LCD Monitor: The Kodak EasyShare C143 has a bright 2.7" LCD monitor featuring approximately 230,000 dots for framing your shots and viewing your recorded images. The camera has no separate optical viewfinder. There are three LCD Monitor settings: Auto, High Power and Power Save.

Face Detection Technology: The C143 features face detection technology which automatically locates faces and adjusts the camera settings for optimum shots of family and friends.

Image Sensor: For optimal image quality, the camera uses a 1/2.3" CCD image sensor with approximately 12.5-million total pixels and 12-million effective pixels.

Recording Media: The C143 has a built-in internal 32MB memory. Only approximately 19 MB is available for recording still or moving images (with mono audio). The camera can also record on optional SD or SDHC Memory Cards with a capacity of up to 32GB. When the Image Storage setting is Auto, the camera stores images on an SD card if one is inserted. If not, the image is stored in the internal memory. The Internal Memory setting always stores the image on the internal memory, even if a card is installed.

Image Formats: Still images are recorded in JPEG (Exif 2.21), while movies are recorded in AVI format (CODEC: Motion JPEG, Audio: μ-Law).

Still Image Resolution/Aspect Ratio: The C143 can record pictures in three aspect ratios: 4:3 (default), 3:2 (best choice for 4x6 prints), and 16:9 (best choice for viewing on an HDTV). You can choose from the following still image resolutions in each aspect ratio:

    Aspect Ratio Picture Size/Resolution
    4:3 12 MP: 4000 x 3000
    6 MP: 2880 x 2160
    3 MP: 2048 x 1536
    1 MP: 1280 x 960
    3:2 10 MP: 4000 x 2664
    16:9

    9 MP: 4000 x 2248
    2 MP: 1920 x 1080

Video Capture: The C143 can record video at VGA resolution (640 x 480 @ 30 fps). Maximum file size for Standard Definition video is 4 GB.

Optics: The camera features an f/2.9-f/5.2 3x Optical Zoom Lens. Combined with the 5x digital zoom, the telephoto capabilities are extended to a total zoom of approximately 15x. The lens has a focal length of 32-96mm (35mm equivalent).

Focus/Exposure Zone: The camera utilizes TTL (through-the-lens) automatic focusing and exposure with selectable focus areas:

    • Face Priority: If faces are detected, they receive focus and exposure priority. If no faces are detected, the camera automatically switches to Multi-Zone.
    • Multi-Zone: Evaluates 5 zones to give an even picture focus. Ideal for general picture taking.
    • Center-Zone: Evaluates the small area centered in the lens. Ideal when you need precise focus.

AF Control: You can choose from the following AF settings:

    • Single AF: Focuses only when the shutter button is pressed halfway down.
    • Continuous AF: The camera is always focusing, eliminating the need to press the shutter button halfway down to focus. This method uses more battery power.

Focusing Range: The camera features the following focus ranges:

    • Normal AF:
      • 0.3' to infinity (W)
      • 1.1' to infinity (T)
    • Macro Mode:
      • 3.9"-31.5" (W)
      • 13.8' to 39.4' (T)

Shooting Modes: The C143 has a Mode button on the top of the camera for selecting the following shooting modes:

    • Smart Capture: Kodak's innovative Smart Capture feature automatically adjusts camera settings for great pictures in just about any environment. Smart Capture utilizes intelligent scene detection, capture control (exposure, focus, ISO), and image processing.
    • Program: For advanced picture taking, you're allowed more access to manual settings than Smart Capture.
    • Video: For capturing video with sound.
    • Scene: Point-and-shoot simplicity when taking pictures in the following situations: Portrait, Sport, Landscape, High ISO, Close-up, Flower, Sunset, Backlight, Candle light, Children, Manner/Museum, Text, Beach, Snow, Fireworks, Self-portrait, Night portrait, Night Landscape, Blur Reduction, Panorama L-R or R-L, and Panning Shot.

Flash Modes: The C143 has a built-in flash. You can select Auto (flash fires in low light), Fill (flash always fires), Red Eye (pre-flash fires before the main flash to reduce red eye phenomenon) or Off (flash doesn't fire). The flash has a working range (@ ISO 400) of 1' to 13.1' in Wide Angle and 1.6' to 6.6' in Telephoto.

Note: In addition to Red Eye flash mode, the camera can be set to digitally correct red eye without the pre-flash firing.

Color Modes: You can choose the look and feel of the photos you take by selecting one of the following Color Mode effects: Vivid Color, Full Color, Basic Color, Black & White, or Sepia.

Burst Shooting: When the Burst Mode is selected, you can take up to 3 pictures in quick succession (about 1.5 frames per second) while the shutter button is held down. The focus and exposure are set with the first picture.

Exposure Compensation: If you are shooting against a bright background or strong backlight, you may need to correct the exposure so that the subject doesn't come out too dark. You can set the adjustments from -2 to +2 in 1/3-step increments.

White Balance: You can choose from the following white balance settings (available in Program and Panorama modes):

    • Auto: the camera sets the white balance automatically according to shooting conditions

    • Daylight: for recording in natural outdoor lighting

    • Tungsten: corrects the orange cast of incandescent light bulbs.

    • Fluorescent: corrects the green cast of fluorescent lighting.

    • Open Shade: for pictures in shade of natural lighting

ISO Speed: The ISO speed can be set to 80, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, or Auto (80-400).

Self-Timer: The self-timer starts when the shutter button is pressed. The delay time can be set to 10 seconds (so you have time to get into the scene), 2 seconds (for a steady shutter release on a tripod), or 2 Picture Timer. In the 2 Picture Timer mode, the first picture is taken after a 10-second delay, and the second picture is taken 8 seconds later.

Long Time Exposure: You can choose how long the shutter stays open, normally in low-light conditions. It is recommended that a tripod be used for long exposures. You can choose from the following long exposure times: 0.5, 1, 2, 4, or 8 seconds.

Multimedia Slide Show: You can create a multimedia slide show to display your pictures and videos on the LCD. You can select which pictures/videos to show, or show them all. You can also customize the slide show with music and your choice of transitions. Slide shows can be saved for later replay if you desire.

Protecting Images: The protect feature allows you to protect important images from accidental erasure.

Image Magnification: When viewing a still picture, you can magnify the image up to 8x. You can also pan around the zoomed image to view a particular portion of the picture.

Share Button: Using the Share button on the back of the camera, you can automatically send your pictures to social networking websites, such as flickr, facebook, Kodak Gallery, or YouTube. Pictures can also be sent to individual e-mail address or Kodak Pulse Wireless Picture Frames.

Tagging Images: The C143 lets you "tag" your photos to make them easy to find later. Pictures can be tagged using keywords (birthday, vacation) or person's names. The camera can learn to recognize people by name when face technology is used and names and faces are matched.

Printing Images: The C143 is compatible with PictBridge technology, allowing you to print directly to a PictBridge enabled printer via USB cable. When printing, you can select one of the following options:

    • Current Picture: You can select the picture you want to print, then choose the number of copies.
    • Tagged Picture: You can print pictures that are tagged for printing, and choose a print size.
    • Index Print: You can print thumbnails of all pictures, and, if the printer is capable, select a print size.
    • All Pictures: You can print all pictures in the internal memory or on a card, then choose the number of copies.
    • Image Storage: Lets you access Auto or Internal Memory.

Power Requirements: The Kodak EasyShare C143 is powered by two "AA" alkaline batteries (supplied). The camera can also use AA Nickel-Metal Hydride (Ni-MH) rechargeable or AA Lithium batteries. Fully charged alkaline batteries have enough power for approximately 180 pictures.

    Supplied Software

EasyShare Software: The C143's software must be downloaded from the internet. Camera is probably easy to use. I just have not used it because I don't like the chirping noise the camera emits (normal, according to Kodak). Camera is just sitting there and I'm not willing to use it. No more Kodak cameras for me.

We got this camera for our 15 year old daughter for christmas. We got a case and memory card as well. Our daughters eyes lit up when she saw it and they have been bright with approval ever since. When I was finally able to wheedle it away from her for a bit I took my turn with it. The bright metalic blue color makes it a joy to look at. The camera feels nice in my hand. It has some weight but not too much. the menu is straight forward and easy to navigate. The pictures come out bright and crisp. Lots of features. More than I really expected for the price. We kind of waited until the last minute to get it (the week before christmas) but it arrived in plenty of time to get it wrapped and put under the tree. It is everything Crutchfield said it would be. I wish everyone had customer service as good as Cruthfield. I have quite an extensive wish list and I will be getting it all from Crutchfield.

    Battery bummer

I should have read the description more closely, as I didn't realize the camera
relied on AA batteries. That's my bad. But Kodak's bad is that whenever you
remove the batteries (or just open the battery door to access the memory card),
the camera forgets the date and time, forcing you to reset them. Huge hassle,
and one reason I wouldn't recommend this camera.

I bought this camera for my daugther (9) for Christmas and she loved it. It takes very
clear pictures and easy to use. The Kodak batteries that came with the camera lasted
less than a day. I purchased the digital batteries and it worked great. My Crutchfield
representative was very patient, attentive and informative. Unfortunately my daughter
took it on a trip to Japan and left it on a tour bus and no one turned it in. I only regret we
didn't download her pics, they were great!

    Eats batteries

Written By Robert S, Los Angeles, CA on Friday, December 24, 2010

It would be a good entry level camera, if it worked with all batteries as
advertised. But the camera REQUIRES you to buy expensive Li Ion, or buy Kodak
    rechargeable batteries for consistent use.

I bought this camera for my daughter. Based on Kodak's specifications, I planned
to use alkaline batteries. Both the package (see item description) and the
manual state any type of "AA" battery can be used - what it does not tell you
is that even alkaline batteries give you fewer than 50 shots. If you use the
zoom, you may get 30. Oh, and sometimes the camera refuses to turn on with
    alkaline batteries.

If you call Kodak for help, they insist you buy Li Ion or rechargeable
batteries. They also now discourage any other type of battery, citing the camera
was not designed to use regular or alkaline batteries. Really?! Why not
    mention this on the package?

Too late to return the camera, now I had to shell out $$ to upgrade the camera
batteries. I could have bought a much better camera (with included battery)
for the same price of this Kodak AND the "optional" rechargeable batteries. I
wish I had...but I fell for the cheap base price.

    No rechargeable battery pack???

Written By John, Brevard, NC on Tuesday, December 21, 2010

Great camera but doesn't come with a rechargeable battery like most other
cameras in this price range. Inexpensive batteries will not even power this
camera on so plan on buying rechargeable ones or just get a camera that comes
with a lithium ion battery and it will stay charged for weeks.

The buying experience was flawless, the price was great, the shipping free and timely.
I will look to Crutchfield for future purchases.
