Surface-Mount Design: Conventional in-wall and surface mount
speakers' coverage area leave some users outside the optimum listening area. The
surface mount PowerPoint 1.2 is designed to cover a very wide area, maximizing
performance throughout the room and for a variety of listening positions. This
advantage allows the user greater control over the sound coverage in their room
enabling them to create the sound environment of their choice.
Monopole Design: The PowerPoint's monopole design also
creates a more realistic sound field for the listener by accurately reproducing
the spatial information on the soundtrack, rather than the diffuse, inaccurate
reproduction of bipole designs.
Advanced Engineered Drivers: The PowerPoint uses newly
designed, very low distortion, short coil/long gap, high output, metal diaphragm
6.5-inch woofers that are coaxially mounted with a new 1-inch, high output, low
distortion metal dome tweeter. The coaxial driver mounting delivers more
realistic sound because the sounds from the individual drivers reach your ear at
the same time, regardless of speaker placement or listening position. As with
all THIEL loudspeakers, the new models utilize a synthesized first-order
crossover system to eliminate phase distortion.
Time And Phase Coherent: As with all THIEL loudspeakers, the
PowerPoint is completely time and phase coherent for much greater sonic realism.
THIEL's Coherent Source technology achieves the elimination of both time and
phase distortions that cause alterations in the reproduced musical waveforms of
most loudspeakers. Eliminating these distortions results in enhanced realism,
clarity, transparency and immediacy as well as improved imaging and soundstaging
in both the lateral and depth perspectives. Phase coherence in the PowerPoint is
achieved by utilizing a sophisticated first-order electrical crossover system in
conjunction with unusually wide bandwidth drivers. Time coherence is achieved by
coaxially mounting the tweeter and woofer to cause the sound energy from each to
reach the listener at the same time.
Power Requirements: It is important to have enough power to
play at the level you desire without distortion. If high sound levels are
desired, the PowerPoint 1.2's are designed to be used with amplifiers rated up
to 200 watts per channel (into 8 ohms). Since the PowerPoint 1.2 provides a 4
ohm load to the amplifier, it is important that the amplifier be rated to
deliver at least 50 percent more power into a 4 ohm load than it does into an 8
ohm load. The PowerPoint is of above average efficiency (89 dB) and therefore
requires less than an average amount of power for average volume levels
Enclosure Design
Enclosure: The second generation 1.2 is built with a cast
aluminum cabinet to offer significant sonic improvements in both clarity and
dynamics. The new surface-mount PowerPoint 1.2 has also been reshaped with a
new, sleek, rounded look.
Grille: The PowerPoint 1.2's grille is magnetically attached
to the cabinet and can be removed by gently prying the grille forward.
Paintable: The PowerPoint 1.2 features an off-white finish.
The speaker can be painted any desired color. To paint the speaker, first remove
the grille and insert the included painting mask to protect the driver. The rim
of the mask is tucked between the black rubber woofer surround and the white
plastic rim of the cabinet's driver opening. Also, peel the cloth from the back
of the grille before painting its front surface. After the paint is dry,
reinstall the grille's rear cloth and the grille onto the cabinet.
Connections
Speaker Terminals: The PowerPoint 1.2's input terminals are
located on the back of the speaker cabinet. The PowerPoint 1.2 uses binding
posts that accept several types of wire connections (will not accept dual banana
plug connectors but single banana plugs can be used). The input terminals are
designed to be easily tightened by hand or a 1/2 inch nut driver can be used.
The speaker's input terminals are color coded to facilitate that both speakers
in a stereo system are wired in the same polarity for maximum speaker
performance. Speaker wire can be routed through a drilled opening in the
mounting surface for a hidden connection. The speakers should be connected to
the amplifier with high quality cable to ensure minimal loss of power and proper
control by the amplifier.
Note: The PowerPoint 1.2 is a very high quality sound
reproducer and will benefit from use with the best associated equipment.
Since it is extremely accurate, it will reveal sources of distortion
generated elsewhere in the system. For example, distortion resulting from
poor recordings or inferior electronics will be reproduced accurately. Also,
the quality of the interconnect cables and speaker cables will significantly
effect the performance of the system
Mounting Options
Speaker Placement: The PowerPoint's unique wedge shape
offers particularly great advantages for ceiling applications. They can be used
as front, center, or rear-channel speakers in home video and music systems. They
can also be used alone or in pairs throughout the home in bedrooms, kitchens,
and offices for outstanding sound everywhere. The PowerPoint 1.2 can be placed
in a wide variety of locations throughout the room on ceilings and walls. The
speaker's wedge shaped cabinet and coaxial driver mounting allow the PowerPoint
1.2 to optimize the coverage area for a variety of speaker placements and
listener positions. To achieve the best sonic results, the cabinet should be
oriented so that the drivers are facing toward the center of the room. For
example: When used as a front right and left, rear right and left, or center
channel speaker, the PowerPoint 1.2 can be mounted on the
ceiling with all of the speakers radiating toward the center of the room
Note: It is important that the PowerPoint 1.2 be mounted
securely to prevent unwanted vibration. The PowerPoint 1.2 is secured to its
mounting surface with two screws, one located along the rear edge of the
cabinet, and one in the front located under the THIEL logo. The logo is
attached with removable adhesive and is removed by pushing it from the
speaker by inserting a small phillips screwdriver, or something similar,
through the cabinet's mounting hole. A mounting template is included with
the speaker to assist in accurately positioning the mounting holes in the
wall or other mounting surface.
