Yamaha

Everything you always wanted in a stereo receiver, except the radio

An integrated amplifier is essentially a receiver without a built-in AM/FM tuner. You get power to drive your speakers, audio controls, and inputs for music source components. Connect an iPod, a computer, a network music player, or any other device that can play Internet radio, and you may find you have no need for an AM/FM radio.

Our take on the Yamaha A-S500

by Jim Richardson

Do you always have to spend a fortune to get high-fidelity sound? Listen to this solidly built integrated amplifier, and you'll agree that the answer is a definite no.

To keep the sound clean, Yamaha keeps the signal path short and well organized inside a sturdy, vibration-resistant housing. A high-current design and high-grade internal components mean you'll have plenty of sonic muscle for dynamic musical peaks. Pure Direct mode lets you bypass the tone, balance, and loudness controls for the purest possible sound.

Because our ears' sensitivity to high and low frequencies is diminished at low volume levels, Yamaha includes a continuously variable loudness control that lets you experience rich, full sound at any volume setting.

The A-S500 offers enough inputs to connect six audio components, including a turntable. Two sets of main speaker outputs let you connect an additional pair of speakers. And the included remote gives you easy control of the amplifier and the other Yamaha audio components in your system.

Highlights:

  • 85 watts x 2 channels into 8 ohms (20-20,000 Hz) at 0.019% THD
  • 4-ohm capability allows use with a wide range of speakers

    Features

ToP-ART/High Current Amplification: Yamaha uses the ToP-ART (Total Purity Audio Reproduction Technology) design concept, which combines the latest and best technologies, parts, and circuit designs, to maximize sound quality. High Current Amplification uses superior quality components from input to output to achieve high current power with low impedance.

Stereo Amplifier: The Yamaha A-S500 features a dynamic, powerful stereo amplifier with low impedance drive capability. The amp is rated at 85 watts x 2-channels, measured from 20-20 kHz into 8-ohms with 0.019% THD (100 watts x 2-channels, measured from 20-20 kHz into 6-ohms with 0.038% THD).

Dual Heat Sinks: The Yamaha integrated amplifier employs dual aluminum-extruded heat sinks to ensure effective heat dissipation and help achieve crisp, clean sound.

Aluminum Front-Panel:  The Yamaha A-S500 integrated amplifier features an elegant aluminum front-panel to resist vibration.

    Controls

Bass and Treble: The stereo amplifier features independent bass (20 Hz) and treble (20 kHz) controls so you can increase or decrease the low and high frequency response (+/-10dB).

Balance: You can adjust the output balance of the left and right speakers.

Loudness: The A-S500 features a continuously variable loudness control (0 to -30 dB), so you can retain a full tonal range at any volume level; thus compensating for the human ear's loss of sensitivity to high and low frequency ranges at low volume.

Pure Direct: The Pure Direct switch is used to best reproduce the sound of any source by bypassing bass, treble, loudness, and balance circuits.

Speaker Selector: The Speaker Selector switch allows you to select only A speakers, only B speakers, A and B speakers simultaneously, or no speakers; so you can control which speakers are playing.

Impedance Switch: The amplifier features a rear-panel impedance switch to match the impedance level of the speakers connected. Choose High or Low:

    • High: Select High if using one set (A or B) of speakers with impedance of 6-ohm or higher; when bi-wiring the impedance of the speaker must also be 6-ohms or higher.
    • Low: Select Low if using one set (A or B) of speakers with the impedance of 4-ohm to 6-ohm; if using two sets (A and B) of speakers simultaneously, the impedance of each speaker must be at least 8-ohms; when bi-wiring the impedance of the speaker must also be 4-ohms to 6-ohms.

Record Out Selector: The A-S500 features a record output selector switch which is independent of the input source selector; this allows you to record the selected output source while listening to another input source. The unit's volume control does not affect the fixed record level output.

Remote Control: The included IR remote (RAS5) controls this unit and select Yamaha AM/FM tuners, CD players, and iPods (when the optional YDS-12 iPod dock is added).

    Connections

Analog Inputs/Outputs: The Yamaha A-S500 integrated stereo amplifier is equipped with six analog stereo (RCA) inputs for connecting external audio sources such as a CD player, AM/FM tuner, Turntable, and/or cassette deck. There are also two pair of RCA outputs for recording through the amplifier.

Note: The unit's Phono input also features a ground terminal and is designed to connect a turntable with an MM cartridge.

Speaker Outputs: The Yamaha stereo amplifier features binding post terminals for its A & B speaker outputs. You can use the A & B speaker outputs to power two pair of speakers, or bi-wire a single pair of compatible speakers. The terminals are not 5-way binding posts because a plastic collar prevents their use with spade lugs and they are too far apart for dual banana plugs.

Headphone Output: The A-S500 integrated amplifier is equipped with a front-panel 1/4" headphone output for connecting a pair of headphones (sold separately). The headphone output and speaker outputs will work simultaneously; you will need to rotate the speaker selector switch on the front-panel to the Off position to turn off the sound from your connected speakers.

iPod Dock: With the optional YDS-12 iPod Dock (item number 022YDS12, sold separately), you can connect your compatible iPod or iPhone to the A-S500 and control audio playback using the remote control or the iPod itself.  The YDS-12 is Made for iPod and Works with iPhone compliant and supports the following iPod model functions (as of November 2010):

    Great Sound!

Written By MikeP, Colorado Springs on Friday, May 10, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This amp produces excellent sound and seems to do a much better job playing my digital files than my old amp did. I switched from a Denon AV unit that lasted me 23 years, and there are some things I miss about it that the Yamaha is missing. The Yamaha does not have a light on the volume dial, which is a bit inconvenient, nor does it have switchable A/C power outlets on the back to plug in other components. This unit cost 1/2 the price of the Denon unit I had, and it sounds better.
    Pros:
    Outstanding sound, price
    Cons:
No light on the volume switch, no switchable A/C power outlets on the back

    Great natural sound!

Written By RickC, Grand Rapids, MI on Saturday, April 20, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Replaced my old Sony receiver with the Yamaha A-S500. (Didn't need a tuner anymore - listen to radio through computer. ) Had limited budget. The Yamaha has brought my Paradigm Reference Towers to LIFE. The sound is warm yet detailed, and the Bass is true now - not forced. I am a classical composer/musician, so great, natural sound is important to me. Great product at relatively inexpensive price. And Crutchfield had it to me in record time. (No pun intended!). I would highly recommend this product for audiophile wannabes like me on limited budgets. Having fun now rediscovering my CD collection!
    Pros:
Great sound - balanced and natural.
    Cons:
The indicator on volume knob is hard to see.

    Yamaha A-S500

Written By KeithL, Ben Lomond, CA on Friday, April 19, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I replaced a 30 year old Pioneer Amp. Easy to connect, plenty of power, nice feel to the knobs. I was looking for a unit with the A/B/A+B speaker selection, multiple inputs and enough power. The Yamaha unit seemed to be the best choice. It seems to be a very good value for the feature set.
    Pros:
Looks great, sounds great. Easy to attach peripherals including IPOD, phone and so forth plus my old turn table, receiver, CD stack, and tape deck. More inputs to spare. Amplifier is a good value.
    Cons:
Speaker wire terminals are a little clumsy to use, but work fine. The IPOD adapter is pretty pricey for what it is.

Nice unit--lives up to all the positive reviews.
    Pros:
Clean appearance, good sound for price.
    Cons:
Could have more inputs--hdmi or optical/toslink. Proprietary Yamaha digital input plug a pain and limited. Minus a star for this.

Very pleased. Using amp this to power a pair of Definative Technology AW5500 on the patio. Wow! The only complaints might come from the neighbors, none from me. This Amp is well a well built and sounds great. Very pleased.

    POWERFUL AMP

Written By Michael, Twinsburg, Ohio on Monday, January 07, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very powerful amp with low distortion levels that produces a very clean sound.
    Pros:
Low distortion levels for clean sound.
    Cons:
None about the amp's quality, but the knobs just has a small scribe line that's the same color as the knob and you can't tell exactly where all the levels are. Woudl prefer an LED or colored scribe lines so you know where all the levels are. But this is very minor.

    Powerful, clean sound!

Written By Shanman, Greensboro, NC on Tuesday, December 04, 2012

Let's continue with the 5 out of 5 star rating. This amp kicks ASS! Half the total harmonic distortion of the comparable Yamaha reciever (THD 0.019 vs 0.040) and it blows away the 5.1 channel Sony receiver I replaced with it. If you want clean, powerful sound, go with this Yamaha integrated amp.
    Pros:
Clean and powerful. Elegant design. Easy set-up.
    Cons:
Volume dial could have an LED indicator so you knew how loud you have it turned up. Also wish Crutchfield sound the matching Yamaha tuner. They sell the matching Yamaha CD player but not the tuner. Come on Crutch.

Great sounding. Easy to use - 2 channel power amp - exactly what a two channel stereophile needs. I could not be happier re the price and performance of this amp. Has a few contemporary features as well re a sub output, a remote control, and provisions for an ipod, ipad, iphone. To boot I ordered it, wirelessly, from my smart phone - pretty cool. Another grand slam ordering from Crutchfield. Great transaction from start to finish!!

Superb sound quality. Hi-Fi sound all the way

Written By Marcos, Tampa, FL on Friday, April 27, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this amp open box item. Well I was not able to tell that it was an open box since the amp came looking brand new without a single scratch. I connected the amp to my Klipsch Reference speakers and I was amazed by the sound quality, the sound stage is definitely Hi-Fi sound with amazing stereo separation, sound can be identify coming from separate speakers. The bass is well defined and the highs and mids too. I am realy surprised by the quality of sound and build. Even my Ipod sounds like is not compressed mp3 music any more. Only down side is the plastic knobs but they do look very nice with the brushed metal finish. I do recommend this amp all the way, before this amp I had a Kenwood KA-9100 vintage amp and the Yamaha wins in every aspect hands down.
    Pros:
Sound quality , Hi-Fi sound for sure. Strong base, sweet sound stage
    Cons:
Really none, plastic knobs , really not a big deal

    Quality with simplicity

Written By Rob_L, South Carolina, USA on Tuesday, April 10, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Yamaha A-S500 has restored my joy in listening. I started out building my own Dynakit stereo equipment in the '60s but had tried to "modernize" the last few years. Two different consumer-grade AV receivers had left me feeling frustrated listening to music. The digital conveniences were great (such as switching all the HDMI sources, etc.), but the audio sections were just plain anemic. The highs were missing in action and the lows had no guts (unless I used a good quality powered sub I have - and even then, there was a hole between the super-lows and the mid-bass). In addition, there were no loudness controls on either AV receiver, making low volume listening rather lackluster. I had even tried replacing my large, '70s vintage floor-standing speakers thinking that they might be aging or out of date. WRONG! All along, the problem was with the low-current power supplies and digital over-processing in the AV receivers. Swapping the A-S500 for the most recent AV receiver brought the excitement of hi-fi listening back into my living room. Even my (slightly) aging ears can hear the highs again and the lows will "tickle your innards." Clarity is back and I now remember what dynamic range is. The response throughout the frequency range is smooth without coloration. It's hard to explain how pleased I am with the A-S500. Kudos to Lyle for helping me arrive at this decision, too.
    Pros:
No "digital takeover" in the signal path - just pure sound. Simple.
    Cons:
Plastic knobs. Slightly deeper than some units - hard to fit in an entertainment center when using banana connectors for the speakers. Both very minor issues.

    Excellent Sound

Written By MarkM, DeKalb, IL on Tuesday, November 15, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Although I have not used it much yet, I think this Yamaha Integrated Amplifier provides balanced sound, with such clarity that I'm hearing parts/instruments in songs that I didn't hear/notice before. It seems to run cool, and I also like the motorized volume knob and the gentle step-down of the mute. I'm awaiting delivery of an Olive O3HD cd server that should be phenomenal in tandem with the A-S500.
    Pros:
Sound clarity. Simple Look of the front panel. Value.
    Cons:
    Small LED inidcator lights.
