Klipsch

Floor-standing speakers — still standing tall

Sure, floor-standing tower speakers buck the industry trend toward smaller, visually inconspicuous speakers, but they're hard to beat if great sound is your primary goal. Tower speakers produce powerful sound with excellent bass, making them a great choice for serious music lovers and for folks who want high-impact home theater.

Our take on the Klipsch Reference RF-52 II

by Kristen Schaub

A great balance of performance and value

Klipsch® tower speakers get rave reviews from our customers, who often seem surprised at the level of performance they're getting for the price. So we're excited about the slender new RF-52 II, which offers up dynamic, full-bodied sound that makes it ideal for small- to medium-sized rooms. Building on Klipsch's previous Reference speaker line, the Series II models have updated drivers and a new crossover system for even more spacious sound. Pick up a pair for stereo music, or use them as your front left and right speakers in a home theater setup.

Grille off

Horn technology for "front row" sound

All Reference Series II speakers feature a redesigned version of Klipsch's famous horn-loaded tweeter. Because high-frequency sounds are more directional than bass frequencies, it's especially important to target them right toward your ears. Klipsch places their titanium tweeter inside a flared opening, known as a "horn," which disperses the highs evenly across your listening area in a 90°-wide, 60°-high pattern. With their Series II speakers, Klipsch has redesigned the shape and slope of their famous horn enclosure, so your movie soundtracks and music will sound more "open," with improved dynamics and efficiency. All in all, you can count on powerful, "front row" sound that's crystal-clear at all volume levels.

Cabinet construction

High-tech driver design

The RF-52 II uses newly machined, light-yet-rigid Cerametallic woofers with a folded edge to produce smoother mids and tighter bass. The specially treated aluminum in the cones helps to dampen unwanted vibrations and reduce distortion, while integrated dustcaps add stability. The RF-52 II also has dual five-way binding posts, giving you the option to bi-amp or bi-wire this speaker for even better performance. And the rigid, braced cabinet comes in a beautiful woodgrain vinyl finish.

Check out the rest of our Klipsch lineup, and build a complete Reference Series II home theater or stereo speaker system. And don't forget to add a Klipsch subwoofer for high-impact bass.

    Driver Technology

Highly-Efficient Design: The Klipsch RF-52 II utilizes a highly efficient design to produce more output using less power & energy for louder sound with less distortion. The RF-52 II is able to fill medium to large rooms with outstanding, accurate, non-fatiguing sound that you can listen to for hours.

Tractrix Horn Tweeter: The Klipsch RF-52 II features a professional-grade 1.0-inch titanium-diaphragm compression driver inside a square Tractrix Horn for smoother high-end response with greater extension, enhanced imaging, and more powerful dynamics. The Tractrix Horn delivers a 90-degree wide by 60-degree high dispersion pattern for a broader sound-stage. Behind the horn lies a 1.0-inch titanium tweeter with a linear travel suspension for open, natural, sound.

Dual Woofers: The dual 5.25-inch woofers of the RF-52 II feature Klipsch's distinctive, copper-colored Cerametallic cones. Made with an anodized aluminum, these cones are strong and dent resistant. The anodizing process converts their inner and outer surfaces to ceramic. The outcome is a rigid cone with superb damping characteristics that will not flex or resonate at frequencies within the woofer's operating range. The 5.25-inch woofers also employ a rubber surround for added durability.

Crossover Network: For signal purity and perfect driver integration, the crossover on the RF-52 II features the finest components and Klipsch custom internal wiring.

    Enclosure Design

Bass Reflex Enclosure: The dual 5.25-inch Cerametallic cone woofers and 1.0" titanium diaphragm compression driver are mounted in a Bass reflex enclosure which features a single rear-firing port. The RF-52 II's rigid cabinet offers improved internal cross-bracing to minimize panel vibrations that can color sound and a rear-firing port to eliminate turbulence noise. A black metallic finished baffle around the horn mouth and dual woofers dramatically improve acoustics across the sonic range. The bass reflex enclosure features a MDF cabinet finished with either a Black Ash or Cherry wood-grain vinyl.

Magnetic Grille: The floor-standing loudspeaker features a removable magnetic grille which easily snaps into place over its cast-aluminum front baffle. The speaker can be used with or without its grille in place.

    Connections

Dual Binding Posts: The speaker has two sets of binding posts connected by jumpers. Using the dual binding posts, you can bi-amp or bi-wire the speakers. The binding post terminals will accept banana plugs (single only), pin-connectors, spade-connectors, and bare wire.

    Mounting Options

Feet: The RF-52 II feature two integrated front-feet and two stabilizer rear-feet with rubber bottoms so you can safely place the speaker on your tile or hardwood floors. The Reference RF-52 II also comes supplied with a set of carpet spikes so you can place the speaker comfortably on your carpet. The supplied carpet spikes add approximately 1.0-inch to the height of the speaker. The carpet spikes screw in directly to the bottom of the floor-standing speaker's feet.

Placement: The Reference Series floor-standing loudspeaker is designed to perform well in a wide variety of locations but you will get the most out of the speaker by following these simple guidelines.

    • The speaker requires a few inches of clearance behind it to allow its port to breathe and will sound best when they are at least two feet from any nearby walls.
    • A pair of RF-52 II loudspeakers should be equal distance from the wall behind them. It also helps to have the left and right speakers at different distances from their nearest side walls. This sort of staggering helps smooth the bass range.

    Klipsch Reference RF-52 II

Written By BobbyA, Muskego, WI on Friday, May 17, 2013

I bought these speakers for surround sound and audio playback in a room 12' X 18' .. I am using 2 in the front and 2 in the rear. Driven by a new Integra 50.3 which is rated at 135W RMS @ 8 ohm resistance. The Sound is incredible!!

Although these speakers are fairly efficient I would not attempt to drive them with any less power. At lower listening levels there is adequate power reserve to step up and fill in audio spikes, giving these speakers nice dynamic range and the ability to create a sonic sound stage that is very life like at lower to mid listening levels. Your ability to hear all the different pieces in the music at the same time is assured .. great clarity and good realism .. turn up the volume and they will rock you no doubt, but like any true reference speaker they really show their stuff at more moderate levels.

If you are demanding true full range reference sound plan on adding a Sub. This is not a knock on these speakers, just a reality for any speaker without a designated low frequency driver of size. I nice tight 8 inch sub will fill in all the lower octave stuff to complete a true reference sound stage.

Build quality is excellent and although they are not big enough to look Impressive, they do look very classy, just like they sound. I highly recommend theses speakers to anyone who needs to listen to hours of music and hear what's really going on, without their ears ringing for hours after their done.
    Pros:
    Quality, clarity, realistic, non fatiguing.
    Cons:
I was not disappointed in any way.

It's been a while since I was in the market for speakers but I recognized and respected the Klipsch name. I was not disappointed. I am using the speakers in a tube system mostly playing vinyl and they are warm and transparent, not the least bit harsh. Great looking and well constructed. A+
    Pros:
    Attractive and acoustically superb.

Aesthetically beautiful, Acoustically sublime. I question as to whether you're going to find a better floor-standing speaker in this price range. Makes for a solid forefront around which to build a superb surround system whether your endpoint is the enjoyment of music or cinema. Just give it a try and compare it to others of the same class.

    "Reference" is Right

Written By Marcus, Central NJ on Wednesday, April 10, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Wonderful speakers. I have them hooked up to a NAD amp and use them mostly for music, everything from trip hop (where they clearly reproduce beautiful female vocals) to hardcore punk (where they are as harsh and aggressive as a basement punk show). Was very excited to have them for the NCAA basketball playoffs; the sneakers screech like I was courtside.
    Pros:
Great value; best speakers I've heard for the price
    Cons:
Rear port so you need at least a foot or two between the rear of the speaker and the wall

    Crisp Highs

Written By bg, San Antonio on Monday, April 01, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The horn tweeter will generate crisp, clear, high frequencies that I do not hear in other dome tweeters which I appreciate in music and movies. However, I have had to give my ears a rest one time after the horn tweeters actually caused an uncomfortable feeling in my ears at moderately high volume.
    Pros:
    Excellant clarity with high frequencies
    Cons:
May cause ear fatigue at moderately high volumes

After searching around, I decided on these speakers and was not disappointed. Bought mainly for listening to vinyl, but also work great for TV. I'm hearing more sounds than before and with a beautiful crispness. When watching hockey, I hear everything that one would hear at the rink. Excellent buy.

    Crisp sound, good looking design

Outstanding sound--I skipped a subwoofer to save some money and the low end is really good just with these Klipsch tower speakers. Very solid and beautiful cherry cabinets, and for some reason (good for us customers) these cherry cabinets are on sale and less than the all black ones! You can't beat these speakers.
    Pros:
Great sound, very solid pieces of furniture.
    Cons:
These tower speakers are fairly big, and thye are heavy (for me that means stable). For some these comments may be negatives.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased the RF-52 II's as my main speaker set replacing a small set of Boston Acoustic surround sound speakers. The application was primarily for music - rock, jazz, bluegrass, acoustic. Movies and TV were secondary uses. These speakers sound awesome and were easy to set up. I am driving them with an Onkyo TX 8050 stereo reciever and I was concerned that it provided insufficient power for the RF-52's. I am very happy with the set up as I can listen at all levels and the set performs great. So far I am pleased with these speakers and would recommend them to others.
    Pros:
Great sound, easy set up, great packaging, they look very good too in cherry

    Small Speakers With Big Sound

Written By Ralph, Middleboro MA on Thursday, March 07, 2013

Well having just got these speakers yesterday i can say with music you do not need a subwoofer , well i dont the bass is very low , almost to much for me , but i placed them about 20 inches from the back wall so they do not sound boomy. i was told by someone to break them in slowly with low music so thats what ive been doing. I have not played them loud yet but at low to medium vol they sound good , im sure they will sound great at high vol , but im more concerned by how they preform at a medium vol . I probably should have waited to do this review , and let the speakers fully break in , but i was so happy with the sound right out the gate, the first thing i listened to was an album by John Coltrane (Lush Life) and as soon as i pressed play an heard that saxophone for the first time through these speakers i instantly noticed the difference in SQ in comparison to my infinity alpha 40 towers that i have been listening to for the last 10 years , one thing i dont like is the cabinets they look very cheap and are not real wood and the overall speaker is very small in size , i wish they were about an inch or 2 taller and wider , but it all comes down to the sound and to me they sound good , 75 watts seems to be more than enough to drive these guys.
    Pros:
    Good sound
    Cons:
    cheap looking cabinets

    Great sound, great price

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking to upgrade my 6.1 setup which utilized the Klipsch Reference RSX series satellite speakers as my fronts (all I could afford at the time 8 years ago). I was glad the Reference series was still around to match my other speakers, and based on my receiver output, at 100 watts per channel, the RF-52 was the best match. I was waiting for a nice sale, and found this at a great price. Saved $200 on the pair compared to the all black set. Plus no tax or shipping. I'm not qualified to judge the sound like a true audiophile, but I just think they sound fantastic. They are in a "home theater setting" family room that opens up in back to our kitchen, not the best acoustic set up, but they still sound awesome. Also Crutchfield and Klipsch recommended that I get a new center channel, but based on the specs, there would not have been a difference; so I didn't get it and saved around $250. Haven't had any problems without the new center. As usual, my buying experience here has been top-notch. Thank you Crutchfield!

    Great sound, sale price

I listened to several very high end products that were out side my price range so I bought these. I'm really happy with the sound even after hearing high end models. They say these sound better after break in. Well that's icing on the cake because as they are they sound really good out of the box. Just a great product at a good price. On top of that Crutchfield service and staff get five stars!

    Excellent sound, great value

    Amazing Speaker

This is an amazing speaker!!! Awesome bass, crisp Highs, mids are great as well. They are packed very very well for shipping, they had to come all the way to Germany for me. One note is they are just under 7" wide, the 10" noted on the overview is how wide with the rear stabilizer feet attached...Overall this is a great speaker for the price...Don't be fooled on the size...when you take them out of the box they are not bulky at all...but they pack a really big punch...I recommend a pair of these to anyone
    Pros:
    All stated above
    Cons:
Just beware to be around when you expect them to arrive at your door...They are shipped in the manufactures box...don't want any thieves taking your new pride and joys..
