Altec Lansing

Our take on the Altec Lansing FX4021

by Tara W.

Altec Lansing's FX4021 delivers clean, full-bodied sound from your computer — whether you're playing music files, movies, or video games. Two compact satellite speakers provide crisp, clear sound, while the subwoofer's dual 5-1/4" woofers dish out deep, rich bass.

The satellite speakers come with removable stands. If space is tight, simply detach the satellites from their bases and mount them on the wall. You'll enjoy easy control over volume, bass and treble with the included remote, or with the provided control pod that connects to the subwoofer. You can also plug in an iPod® or MP3 player for quick access to your favorite tunes.

Highlights:

  • two video-shielded satellite speakers and non-shielded subwoofer

    Features
    Specifications

    Features

Overview: The Altec Lansing FX4021 is a 2.1-channel powered speaker system for use with a DVD player, CD player, computer, or game system.

Satellites: Each satellite speaker has a removable base. The bases can be replaced by optional wall mount brackets available from the Altec Lansing. The satellites are magnetically shielded.

Subwoofer: The powered subwoofer features two 5-1/4" long-throw drivers in an isobaric enclosure. The entire perimeter around the top of the subwoofer is vented for bass output. The amplifiers for the system are located in the subwoofer. The subwoofer is not magnetically shielded so it should be placed at least two feet from a CRT monitor of computer CPU.

SFX Technology: Sound Field Xpander Technology delivers a wider stereo image for bigger sound.

Control Pod: A wired pod keeps controls within easy reach. A rotary wheel adjusts volume, bass, and treble. On/off buttons control power, loudness, and SFX. On the side of the pod are two 3.5mm mini-jacks; one headphone output and one auxiliary input.

Note: If signals are fed to both the main and auxiliary inputs simultaneously, they're both played through the speakers (not generally a good thing).

Wireless Remote Control: The system features a wireless remote that adjusts volume, bass, treble, loudness, SFX, and stand-by (on/off). The remote also has a reset button which returns the tone controls to the factory setting.

Subwoofer Connections: On the back of the subwoofer are RCA outputs for both satellites, a 3.5mm stereo mini-jack input, and a DIN plug for the wired control pod.

    Specifications

Power Output: 46 watts RMS total output power:

    • Subwoofer: 24 watts RMS @ 10% THD
    • Satellites: 11 watts RMS each @ 10% THD

    Frequency Response:

    • System: 32 Hz to 20 kHz
    • Subwoofer: 32 Hz to 180 Hz
    • Satellites: 180 Hz to 20 kHz

    Altec Lansing FX4021

Written By Caleb, Ames, IA on Thursday, May 01, 2008

    Having previously
    been using a 2.0
    stereo system, this purchase
    was clearly an
    improvement. While
    not an extremely
    loud system, it is
    perfect for a dorm
    room, den, or
    office. The highs
    are very clear and
    crisp (probably the
    systems strong
    point) and the bass
    is sufficient. I
    listen to it at
    nearly flat
    equalization with
    the loudness turned
    on and am very
    pleased with this
    purchase. It is
    used with my laptop
    and iPod, most music
    at 192 kbps mp3
    format. Not having
    a very good ear for
    musical frequencies,
    it seems that the
    mids could be a bit
    lacking, but I could
    be wrong. However,
    clarity is
    excellent. I have
    owned it for eight
    months and have
    experienced no
    problems. If one
    thing could be
    improved, I would
    wish for more
    volume, but I'm sure
    that can be bought
    with a higher price
    tag.

    Great at work

Written By Matthew, Charlotte, NC on Wednesday, March 12, 2008

I compared these to the Klipsch 2.1's, which I owned and loved. I needed something for my cube at work where I can't turn them up but they have to be able to cut through a lot of ambient noise and still be balanced. Where, at low volumes, the Klispch 2.1's sounded muffled and lost bass in the ambient noise, the Altec's sounded great and came with more features like the remote. The Klipsch kick Altec out of the water when cranked up, but for a desktop application, they were the big winner. I position the sub directly below the monitor on the floor and each speaker beside the monitor about 2 feet from my head.
