Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Our take on the JVC KW-HDR720

by Zak Billmeier

Your dash is big enough for a double-DIN (4" tall) receiver — fill it with the elegant JVC KW-HDR720 CD receiver and you'll never look back. It'll put the power and clarity of HD Radio™ at your fingertips, plus give you the great sound and extra features you'd expect from a JVC receiver.

Tap into the digital power of HD Radio
Are you a lover of local radio? Then HD Radio is right up your alley. Its static-free digital signal pumps up the quality of FM to near CD-quality, and makes the AM signal sound almost as good as traditional FM. HD Radio stations can also broadcast multiple channels on the same frequency, giving you more listening options.

Great for your iPod® or iPhone®
Your whole music collection's on your iPod, so don't leave it at home. Connect it to the KW-HDR720's front USB input, and you can use the large wheel and easy-to-reach buttons to dive into your music library. You'll see plenty of song info on the easy-to-read, two-line display.

With your iPod connected and an HD Radio station tuned in, you can "tag" songs you like for purchasing later. The next time you connect your player to your computer, you'll get a reminder from the iTunes™ store. It's a great way to expand your music collection.

Killer display
JVC's Separated Variable-Color Display lets you dial in the perfect hue for your taste. You can choose from over 30,000 options, and you can even assign different colors to your controls and the display — decorate your dash in honor of your favorite team, with your school colors, or simply complement your existing lighting. If you're undecided, the receiver can cycle through all the colors continually for a really neat effect.

Want to keep your steering wheel controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this JVC stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the JVC, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

iPod note:
If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

    HD Radio

Built-in HD Radio: With the built-in HD Radio tuner, you can receive digital AM/FM broadcasts from local stations where available. This new technology will significantly improve audio quality and reception, as well as include information such as artist name and song titles or traffic news, viewable on the receiver's display. HD Radio Technology will deliver high-quality digital sound. AM digital will have FM-like quality in stereo, while FM digital will have CD-like quality with static free and clear reception. Right now there are about 2,000 radio stations broadcasting using digital HD Radio technology in the U.S. To find HD Radio stations in your area, visit the HD Radio website (HDRadio.com).

HD Radio Tagging: Using the head unit's iTunes Tagging enabled HD Radio, you can tag your HD music (up to 60 songs) while listening to the radio with your iPod/iPhone connected. When you hear a song you enjoy on your local HD Radio station, you only have to press the head unit's "Tag" button and the song's information will be saved to your connected iPod/iPhone. The saved songs will then show up in a playlist called "Tagged" in iTunes the very next time you sync your iPod/iPhone to your PC. Then you just need to click, buy, and download the song you tagged directly from the Apple iTunes Music Store.

Multicasting: In addition to conventional broadcasts, with HD Radio broadcasting, it is possible to choose from up to 8 multicast programs (HD1 to HD8 and analog). There are also data programs for each program.

Display Information: AM/FM digital stations can offer text and data such as artist names and song titles. The built-in HD Radio tuner displays song title, artist and station information on the display of the JVC KW-HDR720.

Analog Broadcasts: In addition to HD AM/FM stations, the KW-HDR720 can also receive conventional analog AM/FM broadcasts.

Digital/Analog Tuning: You can setup the KW-HDR720 to search both analog and digital radio stations,  only HD Radio stations, and analog radio stations only.

Digital/Analog Presets: You can set up to 18 FM and 6 AM digital/analog presets stations as presets (HD Radio multicast channels can also be preset). Presets can be set manually, or automatically using Strong-station Sequential Memory (SSM).

Mono Mode: If an analog FM stereo broadcast is hard to receive, you can manually switch the tuner to Mono operation.

IF Filter: You can also switch the analog tuner's IF filter to Wide or Auto to increase/decrease the sensitivity.

US/European Tuning: You can set the built-in AM/FM tuner between US standard and European tuning spacing.

    Disc Playback

Disc Compatibility: The unit features a single disc player that will playback CD-Audio, CD-Text, and finalized CD-R/CD-RW audio discs.

MP3/WMA Playback: The KW-HDR720 can play MP3 (8-320 kbps) and WMA (32-192 kbps) audio files that have been recorded on CD-R and CD-RW discs. The disc must be recorded in one of the following formats: ISO 9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, Romeo or Windows long file. The head unit can recognize a total of 255 folders (255 files per folder) and 65,025 total files. The unit also supports IDTag3 (version 1.0, 1.1, 2.2, 2.3 or 2.4) for album and artist information from MP3/WMA files (up to 60 characters).

Track/Folder List: The Track/Folder List displays a list of MP3/WMA folders and tracks on a loaded CD, so you can easily access your music. The Track/Folder List will also display the list of track titles on a CD Text disc. If the MP3/WMA disc contains a lot of tracks, you can fast search (+/-10 or +/-100) through the disc by turning the unit's control dial quickly.

Random/Repeat Modes: The JVC KW-HDR720 offers the following Repeat and Random playback modes for your audio CDs.

    • Repeat: Track Repeat (plays the current track repeatedly), Folder Repeat (plays all tracks of the current folder repeatedly), Off (cancels repeat function)
    • Random: Folder Random (plays all tracks of the current folder, then the tracks of the next folder in random), All Random (plays all tracks of the current disc at random), Off (cancels random function)

Disc Resume: If you change the source, playback also stops (without ejecting the disc). Next time you select CD for the playback source, the disc will start from where it has been stopped previously.

Off Insert/Eject: A CD disc can be inserted or ejected with the power off. When a disc is inserted with the power off, the unit will automatically power up and begin playback.

Disc Protection: If the ejected disc is not removed within 15 seconds, the disc is automatically inserted again into the loading slot to protect it from dust. The source will change to CD, and the disc will begin playback, even if you have another source selected at the time.

Mounting: For proper disc playback you must install the unit within 30-degrees of horizontal.

    USB/iPod/Aux Connectivity

USB Port: The JVC KW-HDR720 features a front-panel USB 2.0 (type-A) port behind a sliding cover for connection of a USB mass-storage class device. The USB port enables audio playback and control of MP3(8-320 kbps)/WMA (32-192 kbps) audio files stored on a portable USB mass-storage class device formatted in FAT 12/16/32. The KW-HDR720 can recognize up to 255 folders (255 files per folder) and 65,025 total files. The unit also supports IDTag3 (version 1.0, 1.1, 2.2, 2.3 or 2.4) for album and artist information from MP3/WMA files (up to 60 characters).

Note: You cannot connect a USB device via a USB hub or Multi-Card Reader to this unit.

iPod/iPhone Direct: The JVC KW-HDR720's front-panel USB port also acts as an iPod/iPhone high-speed direct connection when used with the USB/iPod cable that came with your iPod/iPhone. An additional iPod cable is available (469USBPOD, sold separately) so you can leave one at home and one in the car. If you have an iPod nano (7th gen), iPod touch (5th gen), or iPhone 5; use the Lighting-to-USB cable that came with your Apple device to connect to the head unit. Using either cable allows audio playback, music navigation, information display, and charging of select iPod/iPhone models from the JVC in-dash head unit.

iPod/iPhone Audio Playback: The USB connection allows your iPod/iPhone's large music libraries to be loaded instantly to the JVC head unit and sound quality to be maximized through the head unit's 24-bit D/A converter, allowing for a Signal to Noise ratio up to 98dB. The JVC KW-HDR720 supports audio playback of music files, podcasts, and apps stored on your iPod or iPhone.

iPod/iPhone Control: You can choose to control the iPod/iPhone from the head unit or from your iPod/iPhone's clickwheel or touchscreen.

    • Music Browsing: From the head unit's front-panel controls you can search your iPod/iPhone's music by Category (Playlist/Artist/Album/Song/Genre/Composer). If the selected category contains a high number of tracks, you can fast search (+/-10, 100, 1000) through the music tracks in that particular category by simply turning the head unit's control dial.
    • Repeat & Random: The KW-HDR720 also supports Repeat (file/all) and Random (album/all) playback functions of your iPod/iPhone.

Note: You can listen to apps stored on your iPhone through the JVC head unit when controlling the iPhone via its touchscreen (cannot access apps via head unit control mode).

iPod/iPhone Display: The KW-HDR720 will display your iPod/iPhone's music file information, regardless of control mode. The head unit will display Track number, Elapsed playing time, Artist name, Song title, and Album label.

iPod/iPhone Charging: While connected and the ignition switch is set to ACC or ON, the head unit's USB connection will power and charge your iPod/iPhone. This unit will not charge the iPad. If your iPod/iPhone has no initial battery charge, then the unit will not recognize it.

iPod/iPhone Compatibility Chart: The JVC KW-HDR720 is "Made for iPod/iPhone" compatible and supports the following iPod/iPhone model features (as of 9/25/2012):

Note: Apple iPod/iPhone software updates may change functionality results. If you download a newer software version, you may need to reset the head unit and your iPod/iPhone to regain functionality. If this doesn't work, you may need to wait until a newer software update is available.

Dual Auxiliary Inputs: A front-panel & rear-panel stereo minijack (3.5mm) are provided to allow the connection of portable audio sources. Simply connect your portable digital music player to either the unit's front or rear auxiliary input, and you can listen to the audio from the portable player through the speakers in your mobile audio system.

    Audio Section

    Burr-Brown 24-bit D/A Converter: The JVC KW-HDR720 utilizes a premium TI/Burr-Brown 24-bit digital-to-analog converter for superior CD sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The KW-HDR720 is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the KW-HDR720 are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the KW-HDR720 are as follows:

    • CEA2006 Specs: 20 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (200 total watts)

Amplifier Gain Control: When you are using the KW-HDR720 with factory speakers (or those rated to less than 50 watts peak), the Amplifier Gain Control can limit the amount of power being sent to those speakers. When the Amp Gain Control is set to "low," the volume control ranges from 0 (minimum) to 30 (maximum). When using speakers rated higher than 50 watts peak, you can set the Amp Gain Control to "high," and the volume control will range from 0 to 50.

2.5V/4CH Preamp Output: The KW-HDR720 is equipped with two pair of 2.5V preamp outputs (Front/Rear). The front and rear preamp outputs allow fader control between your front and rear speakers. The unit is fitted with a subwoofer preamp output that is non-functional.

Pro EQ: The KW-HDR720 is equipped with JVC's Pro EQ. The integrated equalizer offers 7 preset sound modes (Flat, Natural, Dynamic, Vocal Boost, Bass Boost, User) suitable for the music genre of your choice. The User mode allows you to manually adjust the head unit's 3-band parametric EQ (Frequency, Level, and Q-Factor).

    Tone
    Frequency Level Q
    Bass 60, 80, 100, 200 Hz +/- 12 dB (-6 to +6) 1.0, 1.25, 1.5, 2.0
    Midrange 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.5 kHz +/- 12 dB (-6 to +6) 0.75, 1.0, 1.25
    Treble 10, 12.5, 15.0, 17.5 khz +/- 12 dB (-6 to +6) Fixed

Loud (Loudness): This feature boosts low and high frequencies to produce a well-balanced sound at a low volume level. You can turn this feature on or off.

Volume Adjust: The input level of each source (other than FM) is adjustable relative to the FM radio volume, so there isn't a significant volume difference when changing sources. Each source is individually adjustable from -5 to +5.

Key-Touch Tone: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

    Bluetooth/Remote Control

Optional Bluetooth: The unit's rear-panel Aux (3.5mm) input can also be used to connect JVC's KS-BTA100 Bluetooth Adapter (105KSBTA10, sold separately). The KS-BTA100 gives you hands-free communication from your compatible Bluetooth mobile phone and wireless streaming audio from a Bluetooth enabled digital audio player. The optional JVC Bluetooth Adapter includes a super-sensitive microphone, an Answer/End button, and playback controls. The KW-HDR720 can be set to automatically mute any music audio to your vehicle's speakers so you can listen to your telephone call using your car speakers. The head unit's rear-panel auxiliary input must be set to "Bluetooth" in the menu.

Wireless Remote Control: The KW-HDR720 comes supplied with a wireless remote control (RM-RK52). The remote contains Power, Attenuator, Sound, Source, Tracking, and Volume functions. The remote operates off of a single CR2025 3V Lithium-cell battery (included).

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input wire (blue/yellow) within the included wiring harness that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately). Please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to see if your vehicle is compatible.

    Display Features

Variable Color LCD & Key Illumination: The JVC KW-HDR720 features 29 color presets for the LCD and button illumination. You can choose one of these color presets or select the ColorFlow mode which scrolls through all 29 color presets. Additionally, there is a User preset, allowing you to individually adjust the intensity of Red, Green, and Blue from 0 to 31; resulting in approximately 30,000 custom color options. The chosen color preset or custom color can be applied to the display panel and the backlighting for all the buttons, except the Display & Eject buttons (they remain red). You can choose to use the same color for the LCD display and button illumination, or use a separate color for each one. You can also select a different color for daytime and nighttime in regards to the unit's LCD and button illumination.

Brightness: The unit offers an adjustable display and button illumination brightness level (0-31) for day and nighttime driving.

Display/Button Illumination Dimmer: The display/button illumination dimmer can be set to Off (normal brightness at all times), On (display/button illumination is always dimmed), or Auto (display dims when 12-volts is applied to the orange/white illumination lead).

2-DIN Chassis: The JVC KW-HDR720 has a 2-DIN chassis (also known as Double DIN), and will fit in many vehicles with a large dash opening. The unit can be ISO-mounted using factory brackets, or Euro-mounted using the supplied mounting sleeve. As always, please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to verify fit with your vehicle.

replaced the factory cd changer (with stuck cd) Crutchfield was great... answered all my questions, sent the right stuff, and was very quick to delv. Install was a breeze, looks so much better than the stock unit. Setting it all up is a bit of a pain, manual is not very clear on how to change settings. all in all very pleased with JVC and Crutchfield
    Pros:
    sound, looks, price,service
    Cons:

    2001 Ford Escape

Written By Tim, Covington, GA on Tuesday, January 22, 2013
Installed in a 2001 Ford Escape
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit is good value for money. I was pleasantly surprised regarding the quality of the HD radio. I was not sure if this was more of a gimmick. I can really hear the difference. The iPod interface is OK, it does easily allow the user to control from the head unit or the iPod. The unit has many sound controls, but the instruction manual does not explain what the settings do. It took me alot of trial and error of playing with settings to get the sub woofer to work, and to make the system sound its best. Also Crutchfield needs to review its database regarding the "01 Escape regarding the availability of Factory radios. To their credit, Crutchfield did send me both possible wire harnesses. The install went fairly smoothly, but you do have to dremel part of your dash away to make the double DIN unit fit. I was a bit unnerved, but the car is a 2001 and the factory radio will never be installed into this vehicle again as the factory replacement was several hundred dollars more than this JVC unit. Overall I am pleased. Better yet my wife is pleased as this is her car. She commented about how "unstatic-y her new radio is.
    Pros:
Price / double DIN size makes for larger buttons and display / USB on the front of the unit. / HD radio
    Cons:
    Instruction manual

    JVC Head Unit TRUE review

Written By gaspasser, sarasota, fl on Friday, January 18, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

ok...so the head unit it replaced was a stock 350z unit...which was pure garbage.....BUT...let me just say this if you need FM reception this unit is not for you.....the one and only FM station i listen to in my area has such a strong signal its incredible BUT this unit constantly gives me fuzzy reception with it.....my stock radio was hands down better in this dept. The bass and treble controls are extremely cryptic....extremely. the alpha numeric display doesnt show enough of your ipod playlists and songs. the install instructions were lacking severely...youtube is the best bet. overall...for the price it is a great upgrade...i wanted it for ipod use etc...not the radio. the wiring harness was a breeze....solder and heat shrink it. the trim ring from the install kit is all you need...nothing else. KEEP and READ the manual...otherwise your goose is cooked as far as controls go. if i had to do it again i think i would have gone with a sl upgraded model...BUT....i have an ipod compatible unit now and i'm happy.
    Pros:
IPOD and AUX inputs large easy to read controls
    Cons:
Cryptic Controls...difficult to figure out Alpha numeric display too short

The double din is great because of the big buttons, large display of songs and clock.
    Pros:

    Cons:
the volume button is very slick with my very dry fingers

Double DIN JVC AM/FM/CD head unit.

Written By Chris, Naples, FL on Friday, January 04, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It's a nice unit. I haven't bought an aftermarket radio in many years and the refinement in this radio is a pleasant surprise. A little too much "disco dash" display for our taste but I guess that's what the folks are calling coolness factor these days these days.
    Pros:
It's 1st class and way nicer than the factory supplied AM/FM/CD unit it replaced.
    Cons:
I'm a yester-tech sort of guy. Give me on/off, volume, balance, tone, function, and channel selection controls with more single function knobs and buttons and I'd be more satisfied. I like a radio that doesn't require a user manual.

JVC KW-HDR720 installed in 2004 Envoy XUV

This review is specific to the radio. Will rate the other products separately. Installed this system in a couple of hours. It works great. I wanted a replacement radio that had large buttons so they were easy to locate while driving (from experience). Also wanted a large display so it was easy to read at a glance. This radio fit the needs. It works as expected and the sound is clear. Functions are easy to use after reading the instructions and going through the menus a few times. It is a good radio for the price.
    Pros:
HD Radio, Works with iPhone / iPod (I have an iPod in the car), large screen, easy to navigate menus, default settings, clock on display
    Cons:
The volume control know is very slick and hard to use with dry hands. I put a black rubber band around the knob and problem solved. Looks like it came that way...

    Radio Controls Completely Illogical

Written By Peter B, Battle Ground, WA on Wednesday, January 02, 2013
Installed in a 2008 Toyota Corolla
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I love the built-in HD radio. Sound is great. However, the FM band has 18 presets but not in three groups of six - rather in one group of 18. And those 18 must be accessed sequentially from 18 backwards or from 1 forwards. That's really dumb. Furthermore if I select a preset HD1 and forward to HD2, the only way to go back to HD1 is sequentially from either 1 or 18. In its defense, however, there are six buttons on the right for direct access to the first six presets. There appear to be little speakers in the front doors in the forward bottom corner of the windows (just inside the mirrors); but once i got access to the adapter plug behind the factory radio I didn't see any wires for those speakers. The point is that I could have easily ordered the six-speaker option, but would have had no wires to connect those small speakers. So I guess a little more up-front info on the ins and outs of connecting (or not) those little speakers would be helpful.
    Pros:
Installation is prettty easy. About an hour.
    Cons:
Radio channel selection logic is very poor. Toyota antenna sucks, and there is no after-market one available.

Ok, I'm not going to go thru each rating individually. Let me say that I couldn't be happier with the total package!! My son thanks you for the wiring harness and I thank you for the dash kit and the Axxess steering wheel adapter kit. It went together smoothly and now I can control my ipod with my steering wheel controls (believe it or not, I couldn't do that with the factory radio)! The JVC has everything I wanted - HD radio and ipod controls - and it is really neat looking too! Let me say, thanks Crutchfield, once again you have provided us with everything needed for a professional installation.
    Pros:
For me, now I can control my ipod with my steering wheel controls. Great looking finished product! I sure don't understand the negative reviews, it went together just fine and works great.
    Cons:
    None.

I ordered for my girlfriendinsurance for Christmas. I was very cautious about needing something additional because sneaking in the installation was part of the gift. I got online assistance and the only thing they didn't tell me was exactly what tools I would need to put in the stereo... until I opened the install kit recommended with the stereo! Fantastic! Everything was there. I waswas able to install the stereo in just over an hour. When I get service like this from a company I tell everybody. I will for sure use Crutchfield for future purchases.
    Pros:
    HD radio. Color match display.

    Better Than Factory Radio

Written By Bob H - Installed in a 2005 Nissan Frontier, Vriginia Beach, VA on Friday, December 21, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The radio is good-to-excellent for the proce. The sound quality is more than sufficient . However, it's too difficult to figure out the radio's features and how to use them. The Owner's Mannual is not well done and that might be the crux of the problem. For example, it has directions on setting the clock but I had to figure out on my own how to get it to display. The colors on the radio constantly change and I haven't yet figured out how to set it to one color; I followed the directions, such that they were, but I'm apprently doing something wrong because it continues rotating colors. Thus, good value radio but not all that user friendly to set up. BTW: What is the "Coolness Factor" in the survey? I assume the colors, which I just complained about, but the colors are not a show-stopper; although "cool" I guess if you like rotating colors. This is a good radio for the price, once I figure out how to use it; it might then be a great radio for the price.
    Pros:
The radio, all parts and wiring that came with it were perfect. The sound quality is much better than the factory radio. It seems well-built but that will take the test of time to know for sure. A BIG PRO to Crutchfield for a well-priced item, the free wiring and mounting face-plates.
    Cons:
Not too happy with the Owner's Manual. The programing direcitions are insufficient for someone like me who is not good with setting up electronic toys. Also, if you don't have the proper tools (which I don't), consider that you may have to pay additional installiation costs.

    JVC KW-HDR720

Written By Ray J, Chicago on Wednesday, December 19, 2012

Overall, a very high value radio. Very good sound, options, features and I'm pretty demanding. HD radio is a surprisingly nice feature. Glad I opted for a unit with it. Nice to have a little better fidelity and more station options. I went with Crutchfield because of their customer focus and was not disappointed. They're a great company to do business with.
    Pros:
Cost, features, sound quality. The installation looks great in my 2007 Mustang GT.
    Cons:
Installation instructions are cryptic from JVC as well as the adapter manufacturer. (The Crutchfield car specific instructions are good.) Menus and setup are somewhat complex, but worth it once you get it right.

    Nice stereo

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I like the unit a lot overall. But it is a bit confusing when it comes to reading and following the directions for channel program saving. I bought this for my wife's Explorer to replace the factory unit who's CD quit working. My wife likes it and says the sound is much better than factory. I will take her word for it as I rarely ride in her car. With the installation kit the mounting looks as close to a factory unit as I could have hoped for. However the installation kit instructions were a bit ambiguous as I had to remove some of the units outer shell to get it to work with the kit. The instructions never said that and I have not replaced a car stereo since I was young. The Crutchfield folks were very eager to help me when I called with questions about the installation. I called three times and each time they answered immediately and knew the solution. Thank you Crutchfield.

This unit replaces the factory receiver in my 2007 Ford Focus commuter car. Sound quality is definitely better than the OEM receiver. Ordered it for the bluetooth feature and then found that you have to order that feature as an accessory.
    Pros:
Great looking display, great sound quality from FM and the CD player.
    Cons:
I dislike the FM tuner memory feature. While you can memorize up to 18 FM stations (the 18 includes any HD) you can only program the first six stations into the hot buttons on the front of the receiver. There is no FM-1, FM-2, FM-3 band feature like the OEM receiver has.
