Our take on the Logitech® Squeezebox™ Radio

by Ralph Graves

The Squeezebox Radio brings the world of Internet music to your nightstand or kitchen countertop. It connects to your Wi-Fi® or wired home network and lets you choose from thousands of Internet radio stations. You can also enjoy personalized music services such as Pandora®, Slacker®, Last.fm, and Rhapsody®. Tap into the music stored on your computer, or listen to a portable MP3 player you connect to the Squeezebox Radio's auxiliary input.

Great sound and a color LCD screen, too

This compact network music player features a mono speaker system with a separate woofer and tweeter that can put out big, clean sound. The 2-3/8" color screen displays song info, station IDs and other text clearly. It can also show screen savers, visualizers, and other graphics from your streaming sources. Six preset buttons let you quickly access your favorite Internet radio stations.

MOG

MOG — over 15 million songs, available instantly

MOG is an award-winning online music service with one of the largest and best-sounding streaming catalogs in the industry. It's the only service to offer all of its music in the 320 kbps MP3 format — that higher bit rate translates to better sound. In fact, we use it frequently in the Crutchfield Labs to test high-end audio gear. MOG's "Primo" service ($9.99/month) gives you unlimited, ad-free access to their extensive music library of over 15 million songs on a wide range of devices including Squeezebox™ network music players, Samsung TVs, your computer, iPad®, iPhone®, and Android™ devices.

Clock radio features

The Squeezebox Radio features a built-in digital clock with a sleep timer. When connected to the Internet, the Squeezebox automatically self-corrects its time — no need to reset it. And you can program your alarm to go off at a different time each day of the week, to fully accommodate your schedule.

Simple Internet setup

Just download Logitech's free Squeezebox Server software to your computer, and set up your preferences. When you turn the Squeezebox Radio on for the first time, it automatically seeks out your Wi-Fi connection, and once logged on, remembers the setting — even if the power goes off.

From the review Spotlight on the Logitech Squeezebox Radio
"The Squeezebox Radio is an extra-strength table radio. I got the wide-ranging music options that I would expect of a wireless music player, with the added bonus of countertop-friendly size. And I got a little something extra with Facebook and Flickr."

    Screen Defect

Written By MarthaM, San Francisco, CA on Friday, October 05, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have enjoyed using the Squeezebox the last 9 months until the screen/display no longer worked as it should (lit with a shadow background). I started using the remote control function on my computer to select the stations I want to play. After enough of this, I checked to see if it was still under warranty and luckily it is (1 year). I am getting it replaced but not in the red color I originally bought since they no longer have it available. It would have been a great product except for this defect.
    Pros:
Easy to set up Remote Control from computer Great app integration
    Cons:
    Defective screen

    No fade or static

Written By John A, Cloverdale, Ca on Monday, July 09, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Living a hundred miles from San Francisco very few radio station signals are available. This radio opens not only all the local stations but the world as well. We love it. The rich clear sound is a joy.
    Pros:
We now listen to all stations without static or faded signal.
    Cons:
Battery should be included even if this raises the price. We are sure the battery was listed as additional, but I assumed the unit came with one. Takes about 45 seconds to "boot up". otherwise it is everything advertised and more. I was a little dismayed to see the price lowered the week after purchase.

    Great Radio

Written By Doug T., Pineville, LA on Friday, July 06, 2012

Great sound! I don't know why people think you can't hook it up to a home stereo. All you have to do is but a cable with a 1/8 on one end and rca plugs on the other. Sounds great through my Bose speakers and receiver.

    Great Present

Written By Radio listener, Hampton Roads, VA on Tuesday, June 26, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this as a present for relative - was great hit! Recipient loved it. Would buy again. Recipient was also willing to understand a bit more about internet radio - using Squeezebox website and setting up the radio (with some initial help from us). Great gift for others if: 1. they have broadband, especially wireless 2. they're not technophobes and have some patience for the learning curve - e.g. they're a tad bit savvy with their computer and not calling you every two weeks for a fix. This was a big enough hit we followed up with the battery so they could go portable around the house (with wifi).
    Pros:
Awesome number of stations, particularly for retired person who wants variety of things to listen to.
    Cons:
Some stations aren't available, and a couple, like scanners on the internet or some CSPAN require some extra skill to set up (knowing the exact URL or stream and loading it into squeezebox)

    Nice Internet Radio

Written By Mike, New Jersey on Saturday, May 26, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought the Squeezebox for my 80 year old Mother to use to pick up stations that are not available over the airways. Do not plan to use the Squeezebox for music streamed from the PC, or as an alarm, so no comments on those features. Also don't use the remote. Bought the Red Squeezebox from Crutchfield because of price and their good reputation/support. Delivery was prompt. Setup initially picked up someone else's Wi-Fi network but had no problems getting to mine. Once setup, using the Squeezebox is almost the same as a radio. When turning on the radio, usually have to tap the play button to hear the station that was last playing, or, select one of the pre-set buttons. Navigating the menus and searching for stations is not something easily done for a person who has never done this on any other device. In my case, the 6 pre-sets were sufficient. Audio was good. Not stereo quality, or boombox loud, but ok. The stations are streamed from Comcast broadband using a 6 year old Motorola modem and a Linksys Wireless-G router, which is also 6 years old. Overall, I'm satisfied with the Squeezebox so far (have had it for just 3 weeks). My Mother uses it almost daily, and gets most of the stations she wants (for some reason can't get WFDU, 89.1-FM, to connect/play on the Squeezebox, though it plays on the PC. Tried contacting WarpRadio but no response yet).
    Pros:
Setup was reasonably quick. Battery (from Logitech) has lasted over 5 hours.
    Cons:
Battery had to be purchased separately. Searching for stations via the Squeezebox can be tedious, but this can also be done on the PC and the stations added to the Favorites list using MySqueezebox.com. Battery does have to be purchased separately, but I suppose that gives you the option of buying batteries from places other than Logitech (or make your own battery pack). The Squeezebox covers and faceplate do show fingerprints and smudges.

    Very Very Happy

    Written By D S S, Urbanna, Va. on Tuesday, May 15, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

In April 2004 I subscribed to Sirius radio, in April 2012 I droped SiriusXM. After the merger of Sirius & XM the quality of programing deteriated to the point that I only listened to two channels. So I did my homework on internet radio devices and settled on this Logitech 'Squeezebox'. I have purposely waited for over a month to write this review so I could experience what the 'Squeezbox' has to offer.

What a great radio! I admit I'm a devoted radio listener and watch very little TV. So my Squeezbox is often on 15 hours a day and I now have radio from around the entire world to choose from! The setup was simple, the sound delicious, the operating easy. As I write this review I am listening to a station in Brazil. Just wonderful selections and I feel I will never realize the full receptive potential of this radio. Crutchfield was very helpful in explaining the radio and answering questions before and after purchase - and the delivery was FAST.
    Pros:
Easy to use - easy to set up - attractive design. And you can listen to downloaded music from computer (a first for me).
    Cons:
? Not one at this Time ?

    Annoying alarm

Written By LW, Boston, MA on Thursday, May 03, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased the Squeezebox to replace an old Grace Digital Wireless Internet radio, which I had been very happy with, but was no longer available from Crutchfield. I'm returning the Squeezebox because it just doesn't live up to my old Grace. The alarm doesn't allow you to set it to come on to a pre-set radio station. When the alarm comes on, it plays random annoying generic disco music and it's difficult to shut off once it comes on. The alarm volume is also loud, despite having set it to low. Also, to set the sleep function, you have to go through several non-intuitive menu functions. Third, when the radio is playing, the time display is so tiny that it's unreadable unless you are very, very close to the radio.
    Pros:
Set up was easy and the sound is very clear.
    Cons:
Annoying alarm; difficult to navigate through the functions; difficult to find sleep function; time display is too small when radio is playing.

    Squeezebox

Written By SDG, Chattanooga,TN on Monday, April 16, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I wanted a radio for my kitchen where I can listen to Pandora and this little radio is perfect. At first I wasn't sure about how well it would sound but it has great sound quality and it is so easy to use. I set up the stations I want on Pandora online and which is easier and automatically the radio is ready to go. I do wish the radio came with the battery instead of having to order it separately...Overall great product
    Pros:
Portable, easy to use, and great sound quality
    Cons:
Battery is a special battery which the radio doesn't come with

    Squeezbox

Written By Richard B, Belair Maryland on Monday, April 02, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great job. Received my Squeezbox the next day at 2 pm. I ordered it at 5 pm the day before.
    Pros:
Very easy to set up. It was playing internet radio IN 5 MINUTES
    Cons:
MINOR PROBLEM: Logictech and all of its distributors should state - The Squeezebox DOES NOT come with a battery. It has to be ordered separately. Very confusing to make a playlist from my computer. Easy to make play list folders but not a playis from the folder. I still have not figured it out.

    No Reason for Alarm

Written By Mike, Western MA on Saturday, March 31, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this radio to use as an alarm clock, hoping to avoid being awakened by incessant commercials. It is not a good alarm clock. Logitech uses a repetitive, synthetic pseudo-rock track as its default. When the alarm goes off, the radio defaults to this obnoxious "music" until the preselected station come in. The volume control for the alarm is "global." Different stations come in at different volumes, however; If one chooses to awaken to different stations on different mornings of the week, some will be too loud and some too soft. Only by chance will the volume be just right.
    Pros:
The Squeezebox is a good little radio, when used as such. Logitech claims to be working on software and firmware upgrades to get the glitches out. Compact. Nice sound for its size. Good customer support, as usual, from Logitech.
    Cons:
Bad alarm clock, so far. Logitech needs to smell the coffee, in this regard.

Good option to hear internet radio/pandora

Written By Chrisc, Milwaukee WI on Monday, March 12, 2012

I'm really pleased with my Squeezebox. It's a great way to be able to access Pandora and TONS of internet radio stations (there's almost too many). Getting it to work with my wireless router was a chore. Their help line was ok, especailly the 3rd guy I talked to. The sound is pretty good. The station pre-sets are handy. Things I wish I could change are-- 1) I wish I could hook up a couple nicer speakers to it to get music in stereo. OR that Squeezebox offered an affordable version w/ 2 speakers. 2) it turns on a little slow.
    Pros:
Very portabe. Decent sound. Lots of station options. Nice for small spaces.
    Cons:
Small speaker. A little slow to turn on.

    Pretty good kitchen counter radio.

Written By Peter2x4, NYC on Friday, March 02, 2012

Purchased it a few weeks ago, so far its a pretty good kitchen counter radio. I do feel that a little larger speaker perhaps would provide a better base audio. The sound does not match my computer Bose speakers. The 6 pre-select station buttons need a little getting used to, if you hold the button down just a little too long, you just reprogrammed the station. I wish they would have included the battery. Overall, no regrets, I do enjoy it!

Good device, but lacking one thing really really needed.

Written By Need iHeart, MA on Monday, February 27, 2012

This radio has been great, BUT, when iHeartRadio took about 750 stations away from normal streaming, unlike other vendors who have added support for iHeartRadio, Logitech seeam to be stubborn. Their users have been screaming for support because so many of us can no longer listen to our favorite stations. 750 U.S. stations is not a small number of stations to loose. Logitech support says they can't add it until iHeartRadio asks them to add it. What boloney!! iHeartRadio has even published the interface spec for anyone who wants it. If they add this support, again this will be a fantastic radio. Until then DO NOT BUY THIS RADIO - you will really be sorry because so many stations will be unavailable to you.
    Pros:
    Fine product.
    Cons:
Lack of iHeartRadio support and Logitech does not seem to care.

LOVE IT! Great sound for such a little radio.
    Pros:
Sounds great and gets lots of stations.
    Cons:
Cannot play it through my home stereo speakers. Need to buy a different unit in order to accomplish this.

Squeezebox = modern portable radio fun

Overcame initial and frequent "network dropped" challenge. Tried the factory reset to no avail. Tech support for my router talked me through changing the router channel. Problem solved. Easy start up. So much can be done with this cute little internet radio. What are you in the mood for? One of your Pandora stations? Radio - news, music? What genre or town or country? You can search radio stations by category or look up a station you know. You can do a lot right on the radio or through web portal. We found a fun "vintage jazz" station and were entertained listening to a Swedish kids station. We use it in the kitchen during meal prep, in the living room while playing games, while cleaning in the office... Portable. Sound is good. If I want great sound I turn on the stereo instead. Much better than listening to a smartphone or i-device.
    Pros:
Easy way to listen to Pandora (computers not tied up). Endless internet radio options. Price was right - inexpensive entree into the world of internet radio.
    Cons:
Overcame the network issue (it was our router) so no real cons. Oh, it would have been nice if Logitech included the battery pack.

Thank god for this radio. The only alternative station went off the air in Phoenix. Local radio is terrible. Now I can stream KROQ in LA for some decent music from my alarm clock in my bedroom. Buy with confidence.
