Why add a powered subwoofer?

A powered subwoofer gives you bass you can feel as well as hear. Our customers love the depth and impact their subs add to music and movies. We hear comments like "it brings out sounds I didn't know existed in discs I've watched a million times." Powered subwoofers aren't just for big bass that rattles your picture frames; they can also deliver tight, accurate lows. If you haven't shopped for a powered sub in a while, you might be surprised at how small they get. Look for an ultra-compact model if you want to tuck your sub away under an end table or in a corner.

Our take on the Infinity Primus PS38

by Kristen Schaub

Infinity's PS38 doesn't just play low and loud, it produces the kind of clear, accurate bass that makes movies and music seem more real. It's all thanks the combination of Metal Matrix Diaphragm® driver technology and a low-resonance enclosure. They ensure that this subwoofer — driven by the built-in 150 watt amplifier — can rock out without introducing any audible distortion. Your music will thrill with low-end punch and your movies will have that extra rumble that makes you feel like you're part of the action.

Infinity's exclusive Metal Matrix Diaphragm driver
The Primus PS38 features Infinity's exclusive Metal Matrix Diaphragm ("MMD" for short) driver technology in the 8" front-firing woofer. It consists of a stiff aluminum core, anodized on both sides for increased strength and rigidity. The result is extremely fast, extremely accurate response, giving you distinctly cleaner, more realistic bass, even at higher volume levels.

Build a complete Primus® system
The Infinity Primus PS38 will fill most rooms with dramatic and well-defined bass. Connect it to your receiver using either the LFE or line-level inputs. Easily accessible controls on the back of the sub help you blend it in with the rest of your system. The Primus PS38 is voice-matched with the entire Primus home theater speaker lineup, so you can create a high-quality sound system that meets your needs.

    Features

Metal Matrix Diaphragm (M.M.D.): Derived from the C.M.M.D. material used in Infinity's flagship Cascade series, M.M.D. features a stiff aluminum core, anodized on both sides for increased strength and rigidity. M.M.D. transducers conduct sound faster than paper, polypropylene, and Kevlar, pushing unwanted resonances beyond the operating range of the transducer. M.M.D. drivers deliver crystal-clear, distortion-free sound from dynamic digital sources, even at high listening levels. The PS38 is equipped with a front-firing, 8" M.M.D. woofer.

Amplifier: This subwoofer is powered by a 150-watt (RMS) amplifier, rated at 35Hz - 150Hz with no more than 0.1% THD. The maximum (peak) power output is 300 watts.

Surround: For a smoother response and improved durability, the woofer uses a rubber surround.

Bass Ports: There are two rear-firing bass ports that allow deep bass with high acoustic efficiency and low distortion.

    Controls

Gain Control: The subwoofer has a rotary control on the rear panel for adjusting the level of the bass.

Low-Pass Crossover: The subwoofer features a continuously variable 50Hz-150Hz low-pass crossover that determines the highest frequency at which the subwoofer reproduces sounds. The crossover has a 24dB/octave slope.

Note: The crossover is bypassed when the "LFE" input is used.

Phase Switch: The subwoofer's phase switch allows you to control the phase of the subwoofer's output relative to the front speakers. If the bass sounds muddy or unclear, toggling the phase control can sometimes strengthen the bass "attack."

Auto On/Off Circuit: The auto on/off circuit turns the power amp on when a signal is sensed and turns the amplifier off and into standby mode approximately 10 minutes after a signal is no longer received. An LED indicator on the rear panel glows green when the amplifier is on and red when the amp is in standby.

    Connections

Line-level Inputs: The subwoofer has a gold-plated LFE input (single RCA) and gold-plated stereo RCA inputs. If you have a Dolby Digital/DTS receiver or processor with a low-frequency-effects (LFE) output, you should use the LFE input on the subwoofer. If your receiver/processor does not contain a Dolby Digital or DTS processor but has a subwoofer output, you must use the stereo RCA inputs. If the receiver/processor has a mono subwoofer output, a "Y" adapter is recommended to maximize performance.

    I didnt believe

Written By tae, kansas on Thursday, May 09, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I really didn't believe how much difference a subwoofer would make to a surround system. Now I do. If you are looking for a sub to fill out your system, then get one. If not this one, which is awesome by the way, then another, but get one. Spend some time setting it up. Placement and sound levels are important. I run this one at about half and cant believe the difference in the sound in the room.
    Pros:
Looks nice. Easy to set up. Sounds great.

    Nice little sub

Written By AdamG, Pittsburgh, PA on Friday, April 26, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a nice little sub that was the right price. Picked it up on sale for $199. Used in a 2.1 system with a Denon AVR-1913 HT Receiver and a pair of Infinity Primus P163 bookshelf speakers. Used primarily to compliment TV and movie viewing, the sub fills the room without shaking the walls. Was a great buy at $199.
    Pros:
Price - free delivery - ease of set-up

    nothing!

    Primus sub

Written By JB, RI on Saturday, March 09, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Good sub , pairs nicely with my P-162's in a small , 12 by 20 room . They were good on their own but the sub adds a real depth to the music . Also use with a low end sound bar that needs to be upgraded . My next review will be my new soundbar and sub package . Never need to run at more than half volume , could easily overpower the listening stage in my set up .
    Pros:
Good product , nice design , great value for the money
    Cons:
Points out the flaws in my system that I knew I had

This Sub is very impressive. The price was great too. I replaced a much higher end sub with this Infinity PS38 and I must say I like this one better. You do need to turn the volume up on the sub when the receiver is at normal listening level but once you turn the receiver up you can reduce the sub volume to about 50 % and its perfect. For those of you wondering if it works well in a room with high ceilings, it does! My room is 20x18x22 and it sounds great.

    Cost, and sound

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great subwoofer and the price was right. Dylan suggested that I purchased this subwoofer to replace the one I had that went "belly up". He also suggested that I buy the open box subwoofer as the price was a little cheaper. Well he was right and right. Kudos to Dylan from guiding me in the right direction and I couldn't be more pleased. Just what the doctor ordered. Bass is right at about 50% volume; I could crank it up, but what's the point. Will continue to due business with Crutchfield in the future.

    Primus sub

Written By ksm, Abingdon on Monday, January 28, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Delivers good bass, but must turn up to nearly 75% to get it to an appropriate volume. I have to say it performs significantly better than the Polk sub priced nearly the same. That sub was so poor I returned it. I have an 8" Definitive sub that is MUCH more powerful and clearer than this sub, but it did cost twice as much. For the price, I feel the Infinity it is a good buy. I use it just to fill in the gap missing from a pair of small bookshelf speakers when working out, but gave an older one to my parents for their home theater and it works well.

    Outstanding Sub for the money!

Written By Bill O, Chagrin Falls, OH on Tuesday, January 01, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I own 4 powered subs-the newest which the PS 38. The one to which I compare the performance of all of them is my 16 year old Cambridge Soundworks PSW-1, a 12 inch acoustic suspension powerhouse which is twice as big and cost 3x as much as the PS 38. I must say the PS 38 holds its own very well to the larger one with clear and deep bass in a 20 x 20 foot cathedral ceiling home theater room. I didn't think the PS 38 wouldn't even come close to the CSW PSW-1, but, amazingly, it does. I used the Audyssey feature on my ONKYO receiver which I also bought from Crutchfield to reset my satellite speakers with the PS 38. I was skeptical at first but Nick was right, the PS 38 is an amazing little subwoofer for the money, especially if you can get it on sale as I did. Eventually, I'll probably bring back my CSW PSW-1 into the room which I use with a SUPERCUBE III, (I think the PS 38 is as good or better), but for right now, I am still mightily impressed with the performance of the INFINITY PS 38 on all program material including CD's, DVD's, and HDTV. I can't imagine a better subwoofer for the money. Hopefully, it will also last for 16 years.
    Pros:
CLEAR and DEEP bass, excellent construction, size, flexible controls
    Cons:

    Very Nice Sub

Written By Tony D, Milwaukee, WI on Monday, December 31, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very nice sub for the money. It really puts out plenty of bass for most people. I have to keep it around 60% power to keep the wife from complaining! In a 2000 sq ft house you can hear the bass clearly from the first floor through to the second. Not really a con, but it's a little larger than expected.
