Sound Ordnance

My system has plenty of power. Who needs an amp?

You might think you don't need an amp because you have a 400-watt system in your car, or because your new stereo puts out 50 watts a channel. But those are peak wattage ratings, which may boil down to 15 or 20 watts per channel, using the more realistic RMS rating. An amp sends your speakers the power they need to deliver your music with clarity and impact, whether you're using factory speakers or high-performance components. And low-frequency reproduction requires lots of power, so an amp is an absolute must if you're adding a sub to your system.

Our take on the Sound Ordnance™ M-1500

by Buck Pomerantz

Win the battle for great sound in your ride. Sound Ordnance amplifiers feature tough construction, rugged looks, and a 3-year warranty, so you can enjoy the full power of your music for the long haul. Even better, you can add Sound Ordnance to your arsenal at a surprisingly affordable price.

The Sound Ordnance M-1500 mono amplifier packs a 500-watt wallop that'll give your subwoofers some serious firepower. An adjustable low-pass filter and a variable bass boost allow you to control your bass barrage at will.

The M-1500 amplifier uses sophisticated power supply and output technologies to ensure clean amplification from the inputs all the way to your speakers. Special circuits protect the amp from overheating and short circuits, and a turn-on delay virtually eliminates that annoying thump when you turn your system on.

Features

Power Ratings: The Sound Ordnance M-1500 is a mono-block Class AB amplifier with an RMS power rating of 300 watts per channel into 4 ohms, and 500 watts per channel into 2 ohms.Power ratings are measured with an input power of 14.4 volts.

Crossovers: The M-1500 is equipped with a low-pass crossover and a subsonic filter. You can set the low-pass cutoff frequency between 40Hz and 300Hz. The subsonic filter, designed to block ultra low frequencies that can damage speakers and rob amplifier power, is variable between 10Hz and 40Hz. The crossovers have a 12dB per octave slope, and cannot be turned off.

Bass Boost: The amplifier has a rotary bass boost control. Boost is continuously variable from 0dB to +12dB and centered at 45 Hz.

LED Indicators: The M-1500 features two LED indicators: a green LED that illuminates when the amp is powered on, and a red LED that illuminates when the amplifier is in protect mode due to overheating or a short circuit in the speaker wire.

Remote Bass Control: The amplifier comes with a remote bass control module to allow you to adjust the volume of the amp from the front of the vehicle. The module has a rotary volume control knob, and an LED to indicate when the amplifier is turned on. The module is designed to mount under the dash, and comes with 16-1/2 feet of cable.

Connections

Removable End Caps: The end caps on the M-1500 are removable with a 3mm Allen wrench (not supplied) to make it easier to attach the power and speaker wires.

Power Connections: The power and ground connections are set screw terminals that will accommodate up to 8-gauge wire. (An 8-gauge amplifier wiring kit is recommended.) The remote turn-on terminal is a set screw terminal that will also accept up to 8-gauge wire. A Phillips-head screwdriver (not supplied) is required to tighten/loosen the terminals.

Speaker Connections: The speaker connections are set screw terminals that will accommodate up to 8-gauge wire. Even though this is a mono amplifier, there are two sets of speaker outputs. The terminals are wired in parallel internally, allowing you to connect two 4-ohm speakers to separate terminals. A Phillips-head screwdriver (not supplied) is required to tighten/loosen the terminals.

RCA Inputs and Outputs: The amplifier features a pair of stereo RCA inputs for connecting your head unit. There is also a pair of stereo RCA outputs for feeding the preamp signal to another amplifier, if needed.

Fuses: The M-1500 features two 30-amp ATC blade fuses.

Wow, a great amp!

Written By Matt, Cincinnati, OH on Tuesday, May 28, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Thought I would try the Sound Ordnance M-1500 since it was on sale. I am happy with this amp and it performs great! I have it putting all 500 watts to an Alpine Type R 12" subwoofer and it pounds! After a while, this amp will get a little hot, but it is nothing extreme. Overall, very happy!
Pros:
great power, inexpensive, lots of functions
Cons:
terminals can be a little hard to get to if you have the amp mounted low

worth every penny

Written By Jason, Council Bluffs on Monday, April 29, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Decided to take a chance on this amp, and I will buy again. Right now it's pushing 2 12" Sony XS-GTR120L no sweat. Only problem now is it hits so hard it make my CD's skip, but hey it's all good mp3's work just fine. There is one thing I would change and that is putting a passive crossover setting. because my head unit has low pass filters built in but with a little fiddling it sounds great. Installation was pretty straight forward only catch was hooking the wires to the amp but not a big deal just two allen head screws and the end slid off giving easy access to the terminals.
Pros:
great value comparable to amps twice as expensive
Cons:
no passive setting for the crossover. have to take end off to connect wires.

Sound Ordnance M-1500

Written By AC, Columbus, OH on Sunday, April 14, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

At first I was a little worried on buying this amp because I never heard anything about this company. I'm a Alpine and an Kicker man I just wanted to put something in my wife car and not brake my pockets, because she will never use its full power. So I jump out there and give it a try. I love it; great sound; there is no delay with the sound, and the look is not bad. If someone would have compare this to an Alpine or a kicker I would have laugh at them..It can hold its own weight with these other bands.
Pros:
great sound; there is no delay with the sound; and the look is not bad; pick up the lows very good. has a 3yr warranty
Cons:
its a little big but that is it...

Great Product, Great Price

Written By DMW, Fredericksburg, TX on Sunday, April 07, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased this amp to go with an MTX ThunderForm and it sounds great. Was relatively easy to install but the EFX wiring kit was a necessity.
Pros:
Works great! Great Price
Cons:
We had to get creative on running the cabling to keep power cables away from audio cables but we made it work. I would rather see power on one side of the amp and audio on the other to make this a little easier.

Fantastic product at a great price

Written By Chase, El Paso, Texas on Saturday, March 23, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This amplifier provides excellent power to my Sony Xplod 12" compact sub. Together they make some serious sound, and shake my entire King Cab Nissan Frontier. I love the remote volume control, it's quicker and easier to use than going through the menu in my receiver. It comes with both high and low pass filters which is not guaranteed in this price range. The controls are very basic and vague though. Cheap plastic dials that really only let you know if you're at the maximum or minimum. That and the large size are the only two setbacks; however in order for it to get smaller it'd have to be class D which would drastically raise the price. I am extremely satisfied with this product and would both recommend it to a friend and buy it again
Pros:
Remote volume control High and low pass filter
Cons:
Size Controls

On A Budget and Want Great Quality

Written By Michael, Atlanta, GA on Thursday, March 14, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The last sub-woofer and Amplifier i had was the B-8P powered sub. I loved the sound even more than the 2 10'' s, i have now at 500rms, and it only the B-8P was 80rms. This amp is great and a extremely budget friendly one too. Oh, and the volume remote which isn't listed is a huge bonus! I wasn't expecting one so when i received it i was in love.
Pros:
Volume Remote, Loud and great for the price.
Cons:
Freaking Huge for an amplifier.

Excellent Amp! One drawback

Written By TheTechGuyZ, Conway, AR on Monday, February 18, 2013

This is a great amplifier with great power options for your configuration. This amplifier puts out large amounts of clean power to your subwoofer. The amplifier is large in size but that allows the amplifier to be so affordable. The only drawback is the plastic mounting is weak and broke when I mounted it on my box. Maybe they put their money more on the internal hardware other than the plastic mounting part of the amplifier. I just moved the amp under my drivers seat but it's too large to be completely hidden. :(
Pros:
Great solid amplifier that produces plenty of clean power for your subwoofer. Great quality as far as the internal hardware is concerned.
Cons:
Plastic mounting bracket is weak and has a potential to break. This amp also puts out a lot of heat luckily it's like the entire amp is a thermal heat sink.

Excellent Amp

Written By JeffB, Kansas on Friday, February 15, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this amp to Power a single Pioneer Comp 12 in a down firing box in a Chevy 1500 Extended Cab. It sounds incredible, the bass knob is nice but I don't use it, just leave it on full and make adjustments on my head unit. While it won't bounce you out of your vehicle its powerful enough to hear and FEEL the punch in any music I play which is all I want. I've had it in my truck now for two years and no issues, and I'm in my truck a lot with work. I would definitely buy this brand again.
Pros:
Great Price and Value. Very Reliable
Cons:
None

Meh, get something better if you can afford it.

Written By Rob, Tampa, FL on Friday, February 01, 2013

For the price, this is an okay amp, but it has some flaws. First, the dial controls are very inexact, they show two to three values and you're basically on your own to figure out what you're actually setting them to. I used a tone generator to precisely configure the low pass filter. Second, and this is a big one, is: HEAT. This thing gets so hot, running it hard (but nowhere near maxed out) for about 15 minutes made it go into protection mode because it got too hot on a day when it was about 75 degrees out. It has no fans and no external heat sinks. I have it mounted on two wood blocks so there is about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch beneath it, and there is nothing near it. It could not be mounted more ideally. I shudder to think what will happen on 100 degree days here in Florida. So, I'm going to have to cool it with some fans, which would be MUCH better if the outside had some sort of heat sink design. Finally, where you connect the power and ground wires could be better. After putting in the cable and tightening the screws all the way the wires were still falling out. This was after applying solder to the wire too. I guess you get what you pay for.
Pros:
Cheap.
Cons:
Overheats easily, cheap connections, inexact controls.

Not a bad starter AMP

Written By Rick, Rosamond, CA on Wednesday, January 09, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this AMP based on the recommendation of other reviews that it paired well with the B-17 sub I purchased as a present for my son. Installation was pretty easy as I just mounted it to the box. The connections are a little trouble as they are all at an angle and inserted from the bottom of the connector. The size of the AMP is a little larger that I thought it would be which is one reason it was mounted on top of the box instead of the back or side. So far my son is please with the performance of the AMP and sub.
Pros:
Looks nice, sufficient power for the B-17 sub
Cons:
size makes mounting on the smaller sub boxes a challenge, angled connections can make things tricky during installation.

Great product this amp makes a huge difference compared to my old sony xplod amp. My Kicker has way more power now and pounds a whole lot harder.
