Pioneer

Our take on the Pioneer ND-BC6

by Buck Pomerantz

Pioneer's tiny ND-BC6 rear-view camera measures about an inch in all dimensions, so you can mount it unobtrusively on the back of your car. The view, however, is expansive, as the camera supplies a 138-degree horizontal and 114-degree vertical view to the rear of your vehicle. Hook it up to any receiver with a composite video rear-view camera input, and you've added an extra measure of safety to your car, truck, or RV.

The adjustable camera bracket adheres to your license plate or any other convenient spot. A small (2" x 1" x 1") power supply module gets connected in with the included 30' of wiring, so virtually any size vehicle can get equipped with a rear view. The camera renders a detailed 330,000 pixel resolution color image, and boasts Lux Automatic Luminance Control for a clear picture in bright or dim conditions.

Highlights:

  • rear-view camera with bracket
  • CMOS-based camera system
  • 330,000 pixel resolution color image
  • 138-degree horizontal and 114-degree vertical view

  • power supply dimensions: 2"W x 1"H x 1"D

Features

Compatibility: The Pioneer Universal Rear-View Camera (ND-BC6) is designed for use with Pioneer and other manufacturer in-dash AV/Navigation head units that feature an integrated monitor and rear view camera input (composite video).

Waterproof Aluminum Chassis: The camera is built into a compact waterproof aluminum case, making it perfect for mounting outside the vehicle.

CMOS Image Sensor: The Pioneer Universal Rear-View Camera (ND-BC6) utilizes a 1/3.6" color CMOS image sensor that has approximately 330,000 pixels to deliver a high quality picture. A CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor) sensor offers improved resolution and eliminates the vertical light "smear" phenomenon that occurs when a camera using a CCD sensor is exposed to a very bright light source or direct sunlight.

Wide Angle Lens: The 138° horizontal and 114° vertical viewing angles provide an excellent near field view of anything behind you.

Automatic Sensitivity Compensation: The camera automatically adjusts to the available light, from 0.9 lux to 100,000 lux. The 0.9 lux rating ensures you'll have visibility at night in low light, while the 100,000 lux rating means the picture won't be washed out in bright sunlight.

Power Supply: The hideaway power supply unit features two Molex plugs. The 3-pin molex plug connects to the camera's attached harness and supplies power and receives signal. The 4-pin molex plug connects to the Power/Ground/Video harness. Its RCA output feeds signal to your monitor while the other two lead provide power and ground. The power lead has an in-line 1 amp fuse.

Mounting: The rear view camera comes supplied with a pre-installed self-adhesive bracket which can tilt the camera up and down.

This heavy-duty little cube-sized camera comes everything necessary for a quick and easy installation. It comes with a 7-m cord already attached. The camera's mounted on a small hinge assembly that's adjustable using the included allen wrench. The camera cable plugs into a power supply module (2" x 1" x 1"). Then, a 3-m (almost 10') power/RCA harness connects that to power and your video receiver or monitor. The camera mount and the power module come with adhesive stick-on pads. The large fold-out instruction sheet carries detailed instructions in four languages, but not English. But that's okay, the illustrations are quite clear and captioned in English. Pioneer's ND-BC6 backup camera looks like a well-thought out product, with all necessary accessories included.

Very happy

Written By cg, Lacey, WA on Tuesday, June 18, 2013

I can't really compare this to other rear-view cameras as this is the only one I've owned, but it seems to do the job very well. It's very small so can fit lots of places. I needed one that would mount high up on the rear of a van, so the license plate mounted style wouldn't work for me. This was easy to mount, the cable is plenty long to run the length of an extended full size van (Ford), and picture quality seems good. I haven't tried it at night yet so not sure how well it works in the dark. I tow a boat with the van and wanted something that I could use to check the boat while towing, as well as gain another perspective while backing down the launch ramp. Works great.
Pros:
Small size, easy to mount.

I thought the picture was very clear even at night. I installed it on my daughters pickup with a switch too, she said that way she could check out the guys behind her at the red lights with out looking in the mirror
Pros:
great picture
Cons:
objects closer than they appear

Ok, expected better clarity

Written By Bobby, Cary, NC on Monday, April 08, 2013

The camera works, no complaints there, but i must echo what others have said about objects being a lot closer than pictured. Also I feel like the overall picture quality is a bit lacking, not what I would have expected from a pioneer product. I have it hooked up to a AVIC-P8400BH for those who are curious.
Pros:
very wide angle, easy install.
Cons:
clarity, object depth

ND-BC6

Written By Berle, Mississauga Ontario on Monday, March 11, 2013

Very good clarity. Only complaint is that objects in the rear view are actually much closer than expected. When I backed into my garage it looked like I had a few feet of room before hitting the wall, when actually I was just inches away.
Pros:
Can be purchased fairly inexpensively if you shop around.
Cons:
Don't rely on it to back up. It's just a reference of what's around you.

Camera works great, as described. VERY WIDE angle...would NOT use this as a means of backing up, but definitely good to use to see ANYTHING behind you.
Pros:
Easy install.
Cons:
VERY expensive.
