Receiver Features
WRAT (Wide Range Amplifier
Technology): This technology uses low-negative-feedback circuit topology for
accurate signal reproduction, improved dynamic signal-to-noise ratio, and better
delivery of power peaks.
Vector Linear Shaping Circuitry (VLSC):
Onkyo's proprietary VLSC significantly reduces pulse noise from digital
signals during the digital-to-analog conversion process to assure the signals
are delivered in all their purity. This adds more depth and clarity to all your
music sources (including digital music files) and movie soundtracks, and
faithfully reproduces the acoustic detail and subtle nuances of all your audio
sources. On the TX-SR604, the VLSC is used on the front left and right channels.
On-Screen Display (OSD): An OSD
can be displayed on your television for easy system setup. The arrow and enter
buttons on the remote allow you to navigate through the menus to select and set
items. The OSD is passed through the composite video, S-video, and component
video monitor outputs.
HDMI Switching: The TX-SR604
has two HDMI inputs and one HDMI output for connecting DVD players, HDTV set-top
boxes, and other video components to your TV or projector. A single HDMI cable
carries digital video and audio signals. The HDMI inputs are compatible with
DVI, so TVs and displays with a DVI input can be connected by using an
HDMI-to-DVI adapter cable, along with audio cables. The receiver uses HDCP
(High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection), so only HDCP-compatible components
can display the picture. The HDMI inputs can accept and switch 480i, 480p, 720p,
1080i, and 1080p signals to a TV, monitor, or projector.
Component Video Switching: In
addition to HDMI, composite and S-Video switching, this unit can switch between
high resolution component video sources. There are 3 component video inputs and
1 component video output; each input and output has jacks labeled "Y", "Pb" and
"Pr". The component video inputs and outputs have a bandwidth of 5Hz to 50MHz.
Digital-to-Analog Converters (DACs):
To decode and playback high-resolution recordings, this receiver is equipped
with 192kHz/24-bit DACs.
Automatic Speaker Setup: With
the supplied speaker setup microphone, the Audyssey 2EQ Automatic Speaker Setup
function can measure and correct the room acoustics in your listening room. The
speaker setup function measures the test tone output by each speaker and
automatically determine the number of speakers connected, their sizes, crossover
frequencies, and the distance from each speaker to the listening position. The
supplied microphone is approximately 2" in diameter, 3/4" tall, and has a 20'
cable that plugs into the front of the receiver. There is a threaded insert on
the bottom of the microphone so it can be mounted on a tripod for accurate
listening position placement. If you wish to setup the speakers manually, you
can follow the procedure for Speaker Configuration.
Speaker Distance:
The distance from your listening position to each speaker can also be set
manually. The front speaker distance can be set from 1 to 30 feet in 1-foot
increments. The center and subwoofer settings can be up to 5 feet more or 5 feet
less than the distance you set for the front speakers. The settings for the
surround left, surround right, surround back left, and surround back right
speakers are each individually adjustable, and they may be up to 5 feet more or
15 feet less than the distance you set for the front speakers.
Speaker Levels:
You can manually adjust the level of individual speakers during playback between
-12dB and +12dB, and -15dB to +12dB for the subwoofer. These adjustments are
temporary, and will be canceled when the receiver is turned off.
Double Bass: You can enhance
the bass output by activating the Double Bass function. This function allows you
to feed bass frequencies to the front left and right channels and to the
subwoofer. Double Bass can be set only when the subwoofer is set to On, and the
front speakers are set to Full Band.
Adjustable Crossover: This
receiver has a built-in high-pass crossover for the speaker system. This setting
is available when you tell the receiver that there is a subwoofer being used.
The frequencies that you can choose from are: Full Band, 40, 50, 60, 80, 100,
120, 150, and 200 Hz. Frequencies lower than the set crossover point are output
by the subwoofer.
Equalizer:
The built-in EQ can be set automatically using the Auto Speaker Setup or it can
be set manually. Each channel is individually adjusted. Each full range channel
(front, center, surround, and surround back) has five EQ bands; 80 Hz, 250 Hz,
800 Hz, 2.5 kHz, and 8 kHz. The range of adjustment runs from -6 dB to +6 dB in
1 dB increments.
XM Ready: Using an optional XM
Mini Tuner, a Mini Tuner Home Dock, and an XM subscription, you can take
advantage of the variety and sound quality of XM Satellite radio. XM offers over
170 digital channels of music, news, sports, and talk radio and even has weather
and traffic information in several major markets. The channel number, channel
name, artist name, and song title are listed on the TX-SR604's display and on
the connected TV monitor. XM stations are stored as presets and recalled in the
same way as AM and FM stations.
iPod Compatible: The DS-A1 or DS-A2 Remote
Interactive Dock for iPod (item #'s 580DSA1 and 580DSA2) provide an interface
between an iPod digital media player and Onkyo receiver. Once the iPod is docked
you can control basic functions such as volume control, play, stop, and skip via
the Onkyo system's RI-compatible wireless remote control. The dock also charges
the battery in the iPod, and allows you to view digital photos and video on an
Onkyo home theater system.
Assignable Digital Inputs: The
TX-SR604 has 6 assignable digital inputs (4 optical/2 coaxial) allowing you to
specify which input source is connected to which digital input jack.
Multi-Channel Input: The
receiver is equipped with a 7.1 multi-channel input for compatibility with
external decoders or high resolution audio players such as DVD-Audio or SACD.
The input consists of left front, right front, center, subwoofer, left surround,
right surround, left surround back and right surround back RCA inputs.
Direct Mode: This mode delivers
pure sound with minimum sound quality adjustment and filtration. The sound
recorded for the right and left front channels is output to the right and left
front speakers only and not output to the subwoofer or rear speakers.
Zone 2 Output: This feature
allows you to enjoy one source in your main listening room, while another source
plays in a remote room. Depending on how you configure the receiver, using the
dual zone feature will require an amplifier and speakers, a set of powered
speakers, or simply a set of non-powered speakers located in a remote location.
You can connect the dedicated Zone 2 stereo RCA line outputs to a
receiver/amplifier or powered speakers in a remote room while powering a
7.1-channel speaker system in the main room; the output level of the RCA line
outs is fixed, so they must be connected to an amplifier or powered speakers
equipped with a volume control. You can also connect a pair of speakers to the
receiver's dedicated Zone 2 speaker terminals, and still power a 5.1-channel
speaker system in the main room. When the Zone 2 speaker terminals are turned
on, the Surround Back speaker outputs do not work. When the Zone 2 speaker
terminals are off, the Surround Back speakers outputs work as normal. The Zone 2
speaker output volume setting can be controlled with the remote.
Listening Modes: This receiver
incorporates a wide variety of listening modes to bring you maximum enjoyment
from your audio and video software. The listening modes include:
- Direct:
audio from the input source is output
directly with minimal processing
- Stereo: sound is output
from the front left and right speakers and subwoofer
- Mono: sound is output from
the front left and right speakers and subwoofer
- Multi-channel (7.1-channel
input)
- Dolby Pro Logic II:

Assigning Listening Modes: You
can assign a default listening mode to each input source that will be selected
automatically when you select that source.
CinemaFilter:
Using the CinemaFilter you soften overly bright movie soundtracks. Movie
soundtracks are typically mixed for a large theater (relative to your home
theater) with lots of soft seats and thick curtains on the walls. Home theater
settings often lack these high frequency absorbing wall treatments making the
soundtrack sound too bright. CinemaFilter accounts for this and for many movies
sounds more natural at home.
Late Night Feature: The Late
Night feature limits the dynamic range of Dolby Digital recordings. Limiting the
dynamic range makes it easier to find a volume that ensures the quiet sounds are
not too quiet and the loud sounds are not too loud for night time listening.
This allows you to comfortably listen to without the need to constantly adjust
the volume to keep from waking family/neighbors. The choices are: Off, Low, and
High.
Note: This feature only
works with Dolby Digital Encoded software and the depth of the feature
will vary based on the individual software package.
IntelliVolume Setup:
The IntelliVolume setup function allows you set a volume correction value in the
range of -12dB to +12dB, in 1dB increments, for each source to prevent large
jumps in volume when switching from one source to another. This feature
eliminates the inconvenience of manually readjusting the volume control each
time you switch from a source with a weak signal to a source with a b signal and
vice versa.
Volume Setup: The receiver
volume can be configured in the following ways:
- Maximum Volume: You can
prevent the volume from being set too high by specifying a maximum level:
50-99.
- Power On Volume: You can
specify the volume setting each time the receiver is turned on from 1
(minimum) to 99, MAX, or Last to use the same level that was used when the
receiver was turned off.
Sleep Function: From the
remote, you can set the unit to automatically turn off after as much as 90
minutes or as little as 10 minutes; choices are presented in 10 minute
increments.
Display Dimmer: The display
illumination includes the green alphanumeric display and a blue ring around the
volume knob. You can dim the display as follows: Normal + Volume light on,
Normal + Volume light off, Dim + Volume light off, and Dimmer + Volume light
off.
Multi-brand Remote: The
supplied RC-651M wireless remote is a multi-brand remote. The remote is
pre-programmed to operate Onkyo components, as well as other popular brands of
equipment, including DVD players, satellite receivers, cable boxes, VCRs, and
televisions.
Multi-channel Input: The
TX-SR604 has a multi-channel input for connecting a DVD player, a high
resolution audio player (such as a DVD-Audio or SACD player), or an external
decoder. The input consists of left front, right front, center, subwoofer, left
surround, right surround, left surround back and right surround back RCA inputs.
You can connect a component using only left and right audio jacks, if desired.
In addition, there are composite and S-video jacks for this input. Note:
The DVD input is included in the total of 7 A/V inputs.
Headphone Output: This receiver
has a standard 1/4" headphone output on the front panel. The speaker outputs,
except for the Zone 2 speakers, are muted when headphones are plugged in.
Speaker Outputs: There are
color-coded binding post connectors for the left front, right front, center,
left surround, right surround, left surround back, and right surround back
speakers. The binding posts are not 5-way because a plastic collar prevents
their use with spade lugs. The Zone 2 speaker terminals are also binding post
connectors.
IR Input: The IR input jack
allows you to control the receiver without line-of-sight access by purchasing an
optional IR remote control system and locating the remote sensor in sight. This
offers control from Zone 2, or when the receiver is located in a closed cabinet.
RI Remote Control Jack: The
1/8" RI remote control jack allows you to connect this receiver to compatible
Onkyo components.
12 Volt Trigger: This 1/8"
mini-jack output can be connected to the 12-volt trigger input on a power
amplifier in Zone 2. When Zone 2 is turned on, a 12-volt/100 milliamp (max)
trigger signal is output.
DVD Player Features
Video D/A Converter:
This player uses an advanced 108MHz/14-bit video digital-to-analog
converter. This high-bit, high sampling D/A converter helps to reduce digital
artifacts to give you a better picture.
Audio D/A Converter:
This player features 192kHz/24-bit audio digital-to-analog converters.
Vector Linear Shaping
Circuitry (VLSC): The DV-CP704 uses Vector Linear Shaping Circuitry to
remove stray pulse noise from the digital signal for a smoother, richer analog
output signal.
Direct Digital Path:
Direct Digital Path signal routing provides a shorter, cleaner path from the
signal processing PC board to the digital outputs than typically found on other
players. This direct signal path routing is used to prevent corruption of the
signal by noise from the ICs and power supply.
Progressive Scan Output:
Progressive-scan video has less flicker and fewer motion artifacts than the
traditional interlaced-scanning method, resulting in a superior picture. To take
advantage of this feature, you must have a television with HDMI or component
video inputs that support the progressive scanning mode. The component outputs
on this unit can be set to pass either progressive or interlaced video.
HDMI: The HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia
Interface) high-bandwidth interface supports not only brilliant digital
video, but digital audio as well. Up to 5 Gbps of data-more than twice what's
needed for a high-definition movie with surround sound-can be handled, with room
for future requirements. All this data is kept in the digital domain, as there
are no D/A or A/D conversions needed, to ensure the highest sound and video
quality available. The video resolution for the HDMI output can be set to 480p,
720p, or 1080i.
MP3/WMA Playback: This
unit will play MP3/WMA files recorded onto DVD-R/W, DVD+R/W, and CD-R/W discs using the ISO
9660 level 2 or Joliet format. MP3 bit-rates from 64-320 kbps and WMA bit-rates from
48-192 kbps are supported. The DV-CP704 can only recognize the first session on
multi-session discs and up to 255 folders with no more than 255 files each.
JPEG Disc Playback: This
unit will play JPEG files recorded onto DVD-R/W, DVD+R/W, and CD-R/W discs using the ISO
9660 level 2 or Joliet format. Each file must be less than 5MB in size. The JPEG
files can be played back individually or in a slide show. Each disc can have a
maximum of 255 folders and 255 files per
folder.
Playback Modes: The
DV-CP704 features the following playback modes:
- Fast Forward/Reverse: there are 4
scan speeds in each direction; 2x, 4x, 8x, and 16x
- Slow Motion: there
are 4 slow motion speeds in each direction for DVDs; 1/2, 1/4, 1/6, and 1/8
normal speed
- Time Search: you can locate a
specific point on the currently playing DVD title or audio CD track by
entering the time
- Repeat Playback: depending upon the type of disc, you can repeat the following:
- DVD: Chapter,
Title, 1 Disc, or All Discs
- Audio CD: Track,
1 Disc, or All Discs
- MP3/WMA: Track,
Folder, 1 Disc, or All Discs
- A-B Repeat: you can
play a specified section of a DVD or Audio CD repeatedly (A-B repeat will
not work with WMA files)
- Random Playback: depending upon the type of disc, you can randomly play the following:
- DVD: Title, 1
Disc, or All Discs
- Audio CD:
1 Disc or All Discs
- MP3/WMA: Folder,
1 Disc, or All Discs (files in subfolders are not played)
- Memory Playback: you
can create your own memory list of up to 32 titles, chapters, or tracks (you
can repeat the memory list, but cannot perform random play)
Navigator: Use the Disc Navigation Window to
browse through the contents of an audio CD or MP3/WMA/JPEG disc to find the part you want to play.
Chain Mode:
With the Chain mode function you can consecutively play all discs, all DVD-Video
discs, or all audio CDs (MP3/WMA included) as if they were one big disc.
Party:
The party mode randomly plays all the music tracks/files on the loaded discs.
Resume Function:
The Resume function allows you to resume playback of a DVD from the point where
you last stopped. The stopping point is cleared when the Stop button is pressed
more than once.
Frame Advance: You can advance a DVD one frame
at a time.
Last Memory Function: The Last
Memory function will specify a starting point on the disc next time you play it,
even if the disc has been removed from the player.
Points on up to 6 DVDs can be stored in memory.
Digital Out: The player uses an optical,
coaxial, or HDMI digital output to transfer audio to your receiver. You can
choose to output the Dolby Digital/DTS surround
bitstream or 2-channel PCM signal, or the digital audio outputs can be turned
off.
Dynamic Range Control: The dynamic range
on Dolby Digital soundtracks can be compressed for late night viewing, so you
can hear dialogue and quiet passages when listening at low volume.
Picture Zooming:
During DVD-Video playback you can enlarge the picture, then use the cursor
buttons to move the enlarged viewing area up, down, left, or right.
Display Dimmer: The
display illumination has three brightness settings. At normal brightness the disc tray light
can be turned on or off.
Remote Control (RI): Two
RI remote control mini-jacks are provided, allowing you to connect the DV-CP704
to the receiver and other compatible Onkyo components.
Audio Outputs: The DVD player features one
optical digital, one coaxial digital, and a pair of stereo analog outputs. Audio
is also output through the HDMI output.
Video Outputs: The DVD player is equipped
with one HDMI output, one component video output, one S-video output, and one
composite video output.
Speaker System Features
Powered
Subwoofer: The 230 watt powered subwoofer features a 10" front-firing woofer
with a 25 to 150Hz frequency response in a
bass reflex enclosure. The subwoofer has a single RCA line input for use with the
supplied cable. The subwoofer automatically turns on when an input signal is
received, and returns to standby mode when no signal has been input for about 5
minutes. An LED indicator on the front panel glows red when in standby mode and
green when in operation. The volume control is on the rear panel. The subwoofer
has no internal crossover so the crossover in the receiver should be used.
Seven Speakers: The system contains seven
virtually
identical speakers for the front, center, surround, and surround back channels. Each speaker
contains a 1-inch balanced dome tweeter and two 3-1/8" cone woofers in a
bass-reflex cabinet. The speakers have a frequency response of 65 to 35kHz and
can handle up to 110 watts each. All seven speakers are video shielded so they
can be placed close to your TV without causing distortion. Each speaker has 2
key-hole slots and one 1/4" threaded insert on the back for mounting the speaker
to a wall. You can mount the speakers either horizontally or vertically. The
center channel speaker also comes with a horizontal base. When sitting in the
base the center channel speaker's height is 6-3/4". The center channel can
be tilted up to 15° in the base.
Speaker Wiring: Color-coded
speaker wire is provided for all seven satellite speakers. Standard speaker wire can be
substituted if longer lengths or thicker gauge speaker wire is desired. An RCA
subwoofer cable is also provided.
