Why would I need an iPodĀ® adapter?

An iPod adapter allows you to connect your iPod to your car stereo, then access your playlists with your stereo's controls - a great idea for several reasons. One, you can scroll through your song titles on your stereo's larger display, instead of squinting down at your iPod. Two, you can route the adapter cable to your glove compartment or center console, so your iPod stays safely out of sight. Three, the iPod adapter keeps your iPod fully charged, so it's ready to rock when you leave your car. And last of all, some adapters bypass your iPod's internal digital-to-analog converter, using your stereo's superior DAC to turn your files back into music.

Our take on the USA SPEC iPod® Interface for VW and Audi

by Ken Nail

You can take it with you. Just because you've got a factory radio in your Volkswagen or Audi, doesn't mean you have to leave your iPod at home. Just install USA SPEC's Volkswagen PA11 iPod interface — it allows you to listen to all your favorite tunes through your car's speakers, and to control song and playlist selections right from your radio.

Just mount the compact interface box in a hidden location in your vehicle, and connect the included VW6 adapter cable to the CD changer input on your compatible 1998-up Volkswagen factory radio. Plug your iPod into the interface and you'll control and charge your iPod while you drive. And with your iPhone® connected, you can even stream music from popular Internet services like PANDORA®, Livio Radio, iHeartRadio, and more.

The PA11 adapter features two different playlist options: create up to five mobile playlists and use the vehicle's CD changer controls to access them, or use the "Direct" mode to select your playlist with the iPod's controls. Either way, you'll always have full control of all iPod functions, including random or shuffle play. The interface also provides an additional auxiliary input — so you can connect other devices as well.

Please enter your vehicle information or call an Advisor at 1-888-955-6000 to find out if this adapter is compatible with your vehicle. As the iPod interface uses the CD changer port, any existing changer that you have must be disconnected.

Note: Be sure to check "Hands-on Research" for specific iPod model compatibility with this iPod adapter.

    Notes:

    • *The iPod nano (7th gen), iPod touch (5th gen), and iPhone 5 will require the Apple Lightning to 30-pin adapter (sold separately).
    • Apple iPod/iPhone software updates may change functionality results. If you download a newer software version, you may need to reset the head unit and your iPod/iPhone to regain functionality. If this doesn't work, you may need to wait until a newer software update is available.

Playback Modes: The PA11-VW6 provides two ways to control and access music on your iPod through the factory radio: Direct Mode and Playlist Mode:

    • Playlist Mode: The iPod is operated and controlled like a CD changer. You can access a maximum of four playlists from the radio. The iPod's controls are not functional.
    • Direct Mode: Search and select music on your iPod as you would normally, and all control functions on the iPod are available for use. The track up/down, fast forward and fast reverse buttons on the radio and steering wheel can be used to control the iPod. If you wish to play free WiFi music streams, such as Pandora, from your iPod touch or iPhone, you should use the Direct Mode.

App Streaming (in Direct Mode): Direct mode also lets you listen to the sound from your iPhone's downloaded music apps (such as Pandora, iHeart Radio, SiriusXM, etc.) through your factory head unit & speakers. You will continue to control your iPhone's apps from its touchscreen.

Note: Your iPhone will need an active Data Plan account with connection to the Internet via 3G, EDGE, or WiFi. You will also need applicable music service accounts.

Auxiliary Input: In addition to the iPod input on the PA11-VW6 there is an auxiliary input (RCA) for use with another source, such as a DVD system, satellite radio, etc. The aux input is accessed at disc 6 track 1 using the factory radio controls. This aux input can be used with or without the iPod connected.

Battery Charge: The PA11-VW6 charges the iPod battery when connected. Charging stops one hour after the iPod is paused or the ignition is turned off to prevent draining the vehicle's battery.

CD Changer Port: The adapter uses the factory radio's CD Changer port so if the vehicle has an existing outboard CD Changer it must be disconnected. An in-dash CD changer is not affected.

Pause: When a non-iPod source is selected on the radio (AM/FM/Cass/CD) the iPod pauses.

Resume: If the iPod is not disconnected after use, it will resume playing where it left off when you restart the vehicle.

    Fantastic Product

Written By Jeff P, Chicopee, MA on Friday, April 05, 2013
Installed in a 2004 Volkswagen Jetta
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Love this thing, works great with my iPod Nano and iPhone. Just set up the playlists or play all the songs on random for the iPod, Auxiliary input works good for my phone to make calls and use GPS over the stereo. I never thought I could get this functionality from my stock stereo system. Beats my cassette tape with a 3.5mm jack to a pulp. Installation was fairly easy, toughest part is running the wire up to the stereo unit and finding a place for the USA SPEC unit to live behind the dash.
    Pros:
Everything about this unit is great, it even charges my iPod

USA SPEC iPod® Interface for VW and Audi

Installed in a 2000 Volkswagen Jetta
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

this is my first attempt at installing anything "stereo related" in my Jetta. Removal of the stereo went well and I found the directions easy to follow. Likes: the best sound of any iPod adaptor i have tried, no exceptions. I listen primarily to classical music and no other adaptor plays as well or as clearly so this would be the best choice for me. IF it worked. I had a great day cruising on the first day of use, then... next day: NO DISC was the only message I got on the radio. the iPod displayed connected and had the VW indicator which showed that the iPod thinks it's connected, but still no sound. Now i have to remove and reinstall the adaptor. IF it keeps working this time... I will be happy. If not, i will return it.
    Pros:
    When it works... great sound.
    Cons:
cord is so long that i had trouble fitting it all in behind the radio. Not currently working so need to re-install it.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

2007 Audi A4, with basic audi symphony stereo. Installation was easy enough, a bit hard finding a place for the ground. The interface works only with my oldest Ipod, Does not recognize my old iphones, nano, or shuffle. I also didn't need the CAS-AD3 adapter kit.
    Pros:
easy enough install and my wife is not pushing for a new car with an integrated system
    Cons:
    only works with old ipod

I have a 2003 VW Pasat and the ipod interface works as described. The playlists need to be titled VW#. And have the cd player on standard play, not mix.It will also turn off the music when a call comes thru on the phone.Very nice feature.
    Pros:
    easy to install, and use
    Cons:
cant use ipod connector with an otter box case. No provision for a i5phone.

    Easy to install...works great

    Installed in a 2002 Audi A6
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed in a 2002 Audi A6. It was as easy as removing the radio (with the removal tool), pulling the connector, plugging in the CAS-AD3 cable as recommended and fitting the radio back in. Took approximately ten minutes to install...the hardest part was probably getting the cables back into the area behind the radio. The system works perfectly, I just wish I had seen this sooner.
    Pros:
Ease of installation and sound quality...previously using a cassette adapter.
    Cons:
    None that I can tell

    Simple Installation

Written By CCreecher, Chattanooga, TN on Monday, September 24, 2012
    Installed in a 2001 Audi A6
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Easy, clean install. Self explanatory, simple and neat. Use tends to be a little hit or miss without a playlist installed on my iPhone 4S. Sometimes I have to use Folder 5 to play and other times, Folder 6 to listen to Direct Audio such as Pandora or MLB At Bat. A little tight on the installation locations. Ended up under the dust panel beneath the glove box. Installed in a 2001 Audi A6 2.7T and required the CAS-AD3 adapter. Total install time was less than 30 mins.
    Pros:
    Simple, Neat, Ample Cable Length
    Cons:
    Buggy Operation at times

Installed in a 2000 Volkswagen Passat
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

On my 2000 VW Passat GLS with Monsoon sound system, installation on this was a breeze. There's space for the white USA Spec box and all.that.cable right underneath the insert that's underneath the radio. Take out that insert, and there's open space to drop everything into. Total time to install, maybe 40 minutes. Works like a champ for my iPhone 3GS and iPod Nano. One slight catch was that to attach the ground wire, you have to loosen a screw that requires a T-9 torx bit. Thankfully, I had one. Would have been a pain otherwise.
    Pros:
Super easy installation Awesomely clear sound
    Cons:
You'll need a T-9 torx bit to loosen one of the screws on the back of the radio chassis to attach the USA Spec ground wire. Lots of cable to find a place for.

    Don't forget the CAS-AD3 Cable!

Written By david, Albany, NY on Thursday, June 28, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The unit works as advertised. Much to my surprise, it not only controls my iPad2 (spec sheet says "no") but it charges it as well. Bonus! The install was easy, but with two caveats:, 1.) This was spelled out in numerous other reviews but I chose to ignore it, wear gloves. The release tools that look like ninja throwing stars are at least as sharp. I have little nics all over my fingers 2.) Get the CAS-AD3 adapter if Crutchfield recommends it. If you get it and end up not needing it, you can always ship it back. If you don't get it, you'll end up needing it and have to wait for a new one. I fall in the latter category. My '04 A4 takes the wider plug, and without the adapter I have no rear speakers or subs. If you've ever done car stereo work, or are technically handy, the install will take 15 minutes, a bit longer if you buried the cables as thoroughly as I did. I brought it up under the armrest from underneath through a whole and a grommet. If you've never done this sort of thing before, or are not a technically proficient person, it could be tricky, but search youtube and you're bound to find something helpful.
    Pros:
Works as advertised. Works with iPad2 and even charges it.
    Cons:
$30 extra for a wiring harness that enough cars need that they should offer it in a separate kit.

    Good basic interface

Written By DrewD, Denver, CO on Monday, May 14, 2012
Installed in a 2005 Volkswagen Passat
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have had several different iPod interfaces in vehicles over the last seven years or so. My favorite was a JVC head unit with a direct iPod accessory interface. I hate having to give up the factory fit and finish to get it though, so I bought this interface for my Passat's Monsoon system. Installation was fairly straightforward, though it's difficult to route the iPod cable into a usable location without drilling holes somewhere. The interface itself uses the changer controls and works essentially as expected. It is not at all intuitive, so plan to keep the instructions handy and don't use the iPod's built in shuffle feature. I have had to disconnect and hard-reset the iPod fairly frequently which is a drag, but this might be because the software is too new (It's an older iPod Classic). Overall I like the product but I think it could be better with some more attention to detail from the manufacturer.
    Pros:
Fairly easy to install. Works primarily as expected. Nice to keep the factory fit and finish and still have direct iPod control.
    Cons:
Buggy and complicated interface and instructions. Causes the iPod to crash more frequently than normal.

Super easy to hook up. The adaptor was only half as wide as the radio input, but I plugged it in anyway and it worked. The whole thing took me about 15 min. and I've never touched a car stereo before. It has jumped around a bit between discs when I start it up, but a few seconds of correcting it and I'm good to go.
    Pros:
    Quick and works great
    Cons:
    None

    2007 Audi A4

Written By Bill, Silver Spring, MD on Wednesday, April 04, 2012
    Installed in a 2007 Audi A4
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this in my 2007 Audi A4. It has the symphony radio unit with an internal 6D changer, no external changer. The USA SPEC works as advertised. The radio is easy to remove. The USA SPEC fits in the dash just under the radio, no need to mount, just stuff it down there. Remove the multi-plug from the back, remove one of the 3 plugs in it and replace with the one from the USA SPEC. The instructions didn't exactly detail which one to replace, but the USA SPEC plug only lines up in one slot, so you can figure it out. The grounding wire can be attached to the radio under one of the screws on it's mounting rails. Similar to another person's review for this car, I DID NOT need the CAD-AD3 adaptor. Crutchfield paid the shipping for me to send it back. The sound is great, no complaints. The unit is a little cumbersome with the playlists, having to select CD6 to manually control, etc, but it works just as advertised. I get in the car, plug in my iPhone, and it starts playing where I left off. You can advance tracks with the radio control, but that is about it. Any selecting of music beyond that requires going to the iPod directly. Basically...it's easy to install, sounds great, doesn't allow much running the iPod from the radio, but works just as described in the catalog.

I purchased this unit for my 09 Jetta with a factory 6 disc. I spoke with the Crutchfield rep, and was assured everything was plug and play. Not so much. This unit didn't work with my car. Looks like If I want iPod/iPhone integration capability, I'll have to purchase a new head unit. Bummer.
    Pros:
Instructions on removing the factory components were excellent
    Cons:
    Didn't work with my car.

Installed in a 2007 Audi A4 (with factory stereo, no bose, no navi)

Written By TomDom, Stamford, CT on Wednesday, January 04, 2012

I just received this ipod adapter for Christmas and I installed it a few days later. I drive a 2007 Audi A4 and I didnt want to change out the head unit because I really like the stock look. This is connected to the factory head unit, which is the Audi Symphony (not Bose) there is no navigation, and the CD changer is internal (6 disc). Crutchfield said I would need the USA Spec CAS-AD3 Adapter for my installation but this adapter was not needed so I will simply send it back, no big deal.

The installation was very simple, pretty much a plug and play. The only thing I had trouble with was figuring out how to play my iphone 4 through the stereo. I figured out that you need to press "CD" twice. The first time brings up discs 1-6 then the second time brings up discs 7-12. Disc twelve MUST be selected in order to use your device in "direct mode". This is where you can control which songs play by using your ipod/phone and you have full access to your entire library. Also, direct mode DOES work with my iphone 4 with iOS5.

The sounds quality is great, I love being able to use the steering wheel controls to change through songs/volume, and its nice to be able to charge my iphone while I listen to music. Pandora works great as well.

All in all, I would highly recommend this product to anyone who is looking to play their ipod/phone in their car but would prefer to keep the stock look of their head unit, or simply save a little money.
    Pros:
Quick and easy installation, great sound quality, reasonable price.
    Cons:
I wish the cord to connect the ipod was slightly longer, this way I would have more freedom with where to run the cable

Installed in an Audi A4 B6

    Installed in a 2003 Audi A4
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've read several negative reviews about the difficulty in installing this product and the lack of an owners manual. With some trepidation, I ordered the USA Spec and waited for it's arrival (thanks Crutchfield for the free shipping!). It arrived much quicker than I ever expected it so and was nicely packaged in packing peanuts that are made of starch and completely biodegradeable!! Win and win again!!! After receiving this product, it took me a few minutes to see how everything worked together and then I decided to see if I could tackle this project.

28 minutes later (really! 28 actual minutes) I cranked up the car and enjoyed my favorite playlist from my iPod, piped though the wonderful audio system in my car. For those hesitant about combining this system with iOS5, my 20 gig clickwheel(which does not use iOS5) and iPod Touch (which does use iOS5) both worked just fine. I leave the old 20 gig clickwheel in the glovebox and trade out with the touch if I want something different, both work equally well. I also combined the RCA aux input and ran it up through the ashtray slot with a 3.5mm jack to incorporate my android phone for hands-free calls. Yep, that works fine as well (flip dipswitch one to the opposite position it comes set in and then playlist six becomes your aux input). The free tools provided by Crutchfield were a lifesaver and I would have never been able to complete this project without them. That was awesome!
    Pros:
Installs easily and small enough to slip behind A/C controls beneath radio. p.s. The owners manual is available on your invoice for those complaining about that... click the link that says "Owners Manual"
    Cons:
Sometimes the steering wheel controls can be a bit laggy with this unit. I also wish the playlist would be titled on the screen (however I knew in advance they wouldn't, so it's not a deal breaker).

Great product. Everything works as advertised. My only tough part was finding a place to mount the transceiver in the German engineered Jetta. Works great!
