Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Our take on the Alpine CDE-125BT

by Zak Billmeier
Alpine Authorized Online Dealer

Talk hands free

We all know it: you should never take your eyes off the road. Alpine's CDE-125BT CD receiver gives you Bluetooth®, powered by industry leader Parrot, for making safer hands-free calls in your car. When a call comes in, the stereo mutes your music so you can conduct your conversation naturally, as if you were talking to a passenger. When the call ends, playback resumes. Most importantly, you can keep your eyes on the road and your hands on the wheel while talking.

Alpine's CDE-125BT CD receiver

Play all your tunes

Alpine gives you a few ways to kick out the jams. You can connect an MP3 player, satellite radio, or another portable to the auxiliary input, or plug a thumb drive loaded with music files into the USB input. You can even load up a CD with MP3 files — it's easy to fit four or five albums' worth on a single disc.

Add Alpine's optional cable, and you'll get complete control over your iPod® or iPhone® right on the stereo. Alpine's unique Percentage Search feature gets you through your playlist at warp speed, so you can find the song you want in no time.

Boost the power, build a system

Out of the box, the CDE-125BT is plenty powerful. But if you find yourself wanting more, you can add Alpine's KTP-445 power pack. You'll get 2.5 times more power (45 watts RMS x 4), and since it connects to the CDE-125BT's harness, you won't have to run wires or tap into your battery.

You'll find a set of preamp outputs, handy for adding a powered sub to the mix. Many stereos only let you adjust your subwoofer level, but the CDE-125BT gives you control over the bass bandwidth and frequency, so you can tweak your system's low end to perfection. You can use the adjustable bass and treble controls to fine-tune your sound, while a built-in high-pass filter lets you remove low bass from your speakers, allowing your system to run more efficiently and sound better.

iPod Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check Hands-on Research for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

Bluetooth note: Bluetooth compatibility of this device may vary, depending on your phone and service provider.

The CDE-125BT supports Bluetooth (ver. 2.0) hands-free communication for the iPhone and other Bluetooth-enabled mobile phones. Hands-free communication is possible from the Alpine head unit when using a HSP (Head Set Profile) and HFP (Hands-Free Profile) compatible Bluetooth enabled mobile phone.

Note:  This unit does not offer Bluetooth audio streaming.

Pairing: The Alpine CDE-125BT can be paired to up to five Bluetooth enabled mobile devices (only one device can be used at a time).

Note: Not all Bluetooth mobile phones will be compatible. Parrot software updates provide support for future phones.

External Microphone with Noise Cancellation: The included external microphone (with visor-clip) allows you to speak to the other party on the telephone call hands-free, while the other party's voice is played through your car stereo speakers. The CDE-125BT features a noise cancellation function to ensure that your calls are heard clearly. You can adjust the microphone's volume level from 0 to 7.

Note: The external microphone measures 0.5625" (diameter) x 1.625" (deep).

Placing Calls: The Alpine CDE-125BT provides a variety of functions for placing a phone call without using your mobile phone. The Alpine CDE-125BT features full phone book access, call history, voice tag dialing, and redial with compatible phones.

      • Redial: Press the Phone button within 5 seconds of ending a call.
      • Call History: The 10 previously dialed, received, or missed numbers can be retrieved and dialed from memory.
      • Phonebook: Up to 1,000 entries can be downloaded from your compatible mobile phone.
      • Voice Dialing: If you have a voice-dial capable phone, you can dial a phone contact by simply speaking the name of your contact.

Receiving Calls: The Alpine CDE-125BT provides a couple ways to answer your phone calls without picking up your mobile phone. Incoming calls are announced by a caller ring tone through your vehicle's speakers and a displayed message (PHONE) across your Alpine head unit's display.

      • Manual Answer: Manually answer an incoming call by pressing the "Phone" button on your Alpine head unit.
      • Automatic Answer: Set the Alpine head unit to answer the incoming call automatically; when a call is received, it is answered automatically after approximately 5 seconds.

Speaker Output: You can select which car speaker outputs the audio from your Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone.

      • All: The audio will be output from all of the speakers in the car
      • F-L: The sound is only output from the front left speaker.
      • F-R: The sound is only output from the front right speaker.
      • F-LR: The sound is output from the front left and front right speakers.

      USB/iPod/Aux Connectivity

USB Port: The Alpine CDE-125BT features a front-panel USB type-A port so you  may connect a USB memory device to this head unit. Your connected USB memory device may contain MP3 (8-320 kbps) music files formatted in FAT 16/32. This unit will recognized up to 100 folders and 100 files per folder. You can use the head unit's Quick Search (text/file/folder) function to browse your USB device's music library. Repeat (file/folder) & Random (all/folder) playback functions are also supported.

Note: The head unit's USB port does not support the Apple iPod or iPhone.

iPod/iPhone Full-Speed Connection: You can connect your iPod or iPhone to the head unit's rear-panel proprietary iPod/iPhone Full-Speed port (attached to rear chassis via 5" pigtail) using the optional Alpine KCE-433iV iPod Full Speed adapter cable (500KCE433I, sold separately), and get access to all the music stored on your iPod/iPhone, right from the head unit.

iPod/iPhone Control: With the Alpine Full-Speed iPod/iPhone cable (sold separately) you get convenient control from the Alpine CDE-125BT.

      • Music Browsing: You can browse your iPod/iPhone's music library by Playlist, Artist, Album, Song, Podcast, Genre, Composer, or Audiobook.
      • Percentage Search: The Percentage Search function uses the head unit's preset buttons to quickly jump to specific parts of a music category (Preset 1: 0% to 16%, Preset 2: 17% to 32%, Preset 3: 33% to 49%, Preset 4: 50% to 66%, Preset 5: 67% to 82%, Preset 6: 83% to 100% of the song library). Percentage Search saves you from scrolling through each song one by one, by jumping to a specific segment of your music library.
      • Repeat & Random: The head unit supports Repeat (song) & Random (album/category/all) playback functions of your connected iPod/iPhone.

Note: Your iPod/iPhone's controls (clickwheel or touchscreen) will be locked while connected to the head unit.

iPod/iPhone Charging: The head unit will  charge your iPod or iPhone when connected via the optional Full-Speed iPod/iPhone cable. Your vehicle's ignition switch should be set to ACC or ON.

Note: If your iPod/iPhone has no initial battery charge, then the unit will not recognize it.

If you download a newer software version, you may need to reset the head unit and your iPod/iPhone to regain functionality. If this doesn't work, you may need to revert to the older software version or wait until a newer software update is available.

Auxiliary Input: The front panel input is a 3.5mm mini-jack. You can input audio from an auxiliary source unit; such as a TV, DVD player, or portable unit. You can change the name on the display to match the type of device connected to the front panel input; Auxiliary, TV, DVD, Portable, or Game.

      Disc Playback

Disc Compatibility: The unit features a single disc player that will playback CD-Audio, CD-Text, and finalized CD-R/CD-RW audio discs.

MP3 Playback: This unit can play CD-R/RW discs containing MP3 audio files recorded using the ISO 9660 Level 1 or Level 2 formats. MP3 audio files with bit rates from 8 kbps to 320 kbps are supported. Up to a maximum of 255 folders and 510 files per folder can be read from one disc. ID3 tags (ver.1 & ver.2) are supported; track title, artist name, and album name ID3 tag data can be displayed.

Text/File/Folder Quick Search: When you are playing a disc with CD Text or  ID3 tags, you can easily search for a track, file, or folder by its title. Once you have activated the search mode, you can use the rotary encoder to quickly scan through the titles to locate the desired track. For discs without CD Text or ID3 tags, searches are made using the track numbers associated with each song.

Playback Modes: The Alpine CDE-125BT features both Repeat & Random playback modes.

      • Repeat: Track, File, Folder
      • Random: All, Folder

Off Insert/Eject: A CD disc can be inserted or ejected with the power off. When a disc is inserted with the power off, the unit will automatically power up and begin playback.

Angle Mounting: For proper disc playback, Alpine recommends mounting the CDE-125BT no more that 35° above horizontal.

      Audio Section

CEA-2006 Compliant: The specifications given by Alpine for the built-in amplifier comply with the CEA-2006 mobile amplifier power testing and measurement standards from the CEA (Consumer Electronics Association). All manufacturers who comply with the standard can display the CEA-2006 logo on their product.

      • CEA-2006 Power Rating: 18 watts x 4-channel (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
      • Max Power Output: 50 watts x 4-channel (200 total watts)

Power Pack Ready: You can add-on Alpine's KTP-445 Power Pack (500KTP445, sold separately) to instantly increase the head unit's power to a true 45-watts x 4-channel (RMS). The Alpine KTP-445 Power Pack connects to the CDE-125BT via the head unit's front and rear channel preamp outputs.

2.0V Preamp Outs: There is one set of stereo preamp outputs. The unit's stereo preamp outputs are switchable. They can be configured as full-range front-channel preamp outputs or a non-fading Subwoofer preamp output.

Subwoofer System: When the unit's preamp outputs are configured for a subwoofer, you can select between two subwoofer systems (either System1 or System2) for the desired subwoofer effect.

      • Subwoofer System 1: The subwoofer level changes according to the main volume setting (0-35).
      • Subwoofer System 2: The subwoofer level is different from the main volume setting. You can set the subwoofer level from 0-15. This allows the connected subwoofer to be audible even when the main unit's volume level is low.

Bass & Treble: The unit's independent Bass & Treble adjustments provide control over your system, so you can tailor the sound to your personal taste.

      • Bass Control: Adjusts low frequencies.
        • Bass Center Frequency: 60Hz, 80Hz (default), 100Hz, or 200Hz
        • Bass Band Width: 1 (narrow) to 4 (wide)
        • Bass Level: -7 to +7 (+/-14dB in 2dB steps)
      • Treble Control: Adjusts high frequencies.
        • Treble Center Frequency: 10kHz (default), 12.5kHz, 15kHz, or 17.5kHz
        • Treble Level: -7 to +7 (+/-14dB in 2dB steps)

High Pass Filter (HPF): The speaker level and front line level outputs have a selectable crossover (HPF); Off (default), 60Hz, 80Hz, or 100Hz

Loudness: Loudness introduces a special low and high frequency emphasis at low listening levels to compensate for the ear's decreased sensitivity to bass and treble sound at low volume

Power IC Off: When an external amplifier is powering all the speakers in the system, you can turn the internal amp off, which will improve the sound quality.

Audio Mute: Activating the Audio Mute function will instantly lower the volume level by 20 dB.

Interrupt Feature: When a device having the interrupt feature (such as a cellular telephone) is connected to the receiver, the audio signal will be automatically muted whenever the interrupt signal is received from the device. The supplied wiring harness contains a pink/black Interrupt lead that needs to be connected to the device's interrupt signal connection.

      Radio Functions

AM/FM Tuner: The Alpine CDE-125BT features a built-in AM/FM tuner with Manual, Seek, and Preset tuning.

Preset Tuning: The built-in tuner provides 12 FM and 6 AM preset stations. Stations can be preset manually or automatically.

Local/Distance Tuning: Local seek tuning lets you tune in only those radio stations with sufficiently strong signals for good reception. Distance seek tuning allows both strong and weak stations to be tuned.

      Display Features

Detachable Face: The unit features a single front loading CD face that detaches from the chassis to deter theft. The CD player comes supplied with a hard plastic face case to protect the detachable face when you have it off the chassis. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

Note: An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can also be purchased for this unit.

Text Display: Text information, such as the disc name and track name will be displayed if playing a CD-Text compatible disc. It is also possible to display the folder name, the file name, and ID3 tag information while playing MP3 audio files.

Text Scroll: The AM/FM CD receiver can scroll the disc and track names recorded on CD-Text discs, as well as the text information of MP3 audio files.

Auto Dimmer: This unit is equipped with an illumination lead; when the unit's dimmer mode is set to Auto and the illumination lead is connected to your vehicle's headlight circuit, the display and button illumination will dim to a fixed, preset level whenever the headlights are turned on. If preferred, you may choose the Manual dimmer mode setting, so the display and button illumination is dim at all times.

Demo Mode: This unit has a demonstration feature for its display which can be turned On or Off in the menu.

      Remote Control (optional):

Optional Wireless Remote Control: The Alpine CDE-125BT is compatible with the Alpine RUE-4202 IR remote control (500RUE4202, sold separately) for wireless operation of the head unit.

      Alpine CDE 125BT

Written By Bill, NJ on Thursday, January 05, 2012
      Installed in a 1997 Mercedes-Benz E-Class
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've read hundreds of product reviews and never wrote one until now. I installed this in my wife's '97 Mercedes E320 and I cannot believe the sound quality with the car's stock amp and speakers. Also, BT was a key feature; I installed the mic next to the overhead reading light and sunroof controls. Honestly, the sound quality on both ends of the call are better than many factory setups. I can compare it directly to the factory setup in my 2006 BMW Coupe and the Alpine is hands down better. I cannot believe the quality of the sound in BT , FM and iPOD (with optional cable) modes for a $199 unit and I've had numerous stock and aftermarket head units including Alpines costing $200 more.
      Pros:
Audio Sound Quality BT sound quality Overall value
      Cons:

      Alpine CDE 125BT

      Written By RoDogg78, Dyersburg,Tn on Saturday, November 26, 2011

Overall it is a great unit that is very user friendly! It has the Alpine name so you know the quality is there. Looks sharp at night. Rotary knob is smooth and not sluggish to response. Worth the money!!
      Pros:
This unit has great sound. It gives me more bass than Kenwood unit. The Ipod and USB functions are a breeze to use. It is built solid with nice look to it. I would recommend to anybody!
      Cons:
Only two things I can say that I don't like. 1st is it doesn't play wma files. 2nd is that requires cable from back of unit to play ipod because the front usb doesn't support ipods.

i bought the alpine cde-125bt and it looks and sounds a whole lot better than my old factory cd player that came in my 2000 Ford Ranger i am going buy me a alpine amp and a alpine bass system later down the road when i get more money and i would recommend buying any alpine products to any one who wants to upgrade.

      Not worth the extra money

I spent extra on this unit to get the bluetooth capabilities. In the end, isn't worth it. It can't stream music via bluetooth so you still need to connect using the front inputs. I just use the phone via this same wire so Bluetooth is not even needed. I could have spent considerable less on a non-bluetooth unit and be doing the exact same thing. Make sure the Bluetooth is capable of what you need it for.

This receiver is alright. Go for the CDE-126BT if you're overhauling

Written By Phong, Washington on Sunday, February 27, 2011

Couldn't decide if i wanted this or the CDE-126BT for my all alpine setup. These receiver was replacing my old Pioneer DEH-P400UB. I think this receiver is pretty good for what it does. The downside of these for my setup is that this only has two pre-amp outputs, left and right versus my previous receiver which has two fronts, two rears, and subwoofer which would've been perfect for me. The other thing that bothers me is the ipod functionality. My pioneer dash gave me the option to either control my iPod using the receiver controls or from the iPod itself. Unfortunatly, you can only control the iPod from the dash. This doesn't work out too well for me as 99% of my music are from japan so this receiver is not capable of showing japanese text, making searching for music impossible while it is connected. The iPod connector (sold separately), unfortunately is useless to me and I am connecting my iPod to the AUX port of the receiver.
In my opinion, if you're only looking to get a receiver this is a good receiver for the money. If you plan on going all out and doing an overhaul of your car sound system, I think the CDE-126BT is a much better choice.
