Onkyo

Our take on the Onkyo UP-HT1

by Ralph Graves

The UP-HT1 HD Radio tuner makes a great add-on for your compatible Onkyo receiver. It lets you enjoy the clear sound and expanded listening options that HD Radio programming can provide. And you can tune in regular AM and FM broadcasts, too. The tuner receives the free, digital-only HD Radio simulcasts many stations offer alongside their analog signals, as well as the additional digital subchannels some stations broadcast. The included proprietary cable connects between the UP-HT1 and your Onkyo receiver and carries both audio and AC power, as well as commands form your receiver's remote control.

Highlights:

  • for use with Onkyo receivers with proprietary Universal Ports
  • AM/FM HD Radio tuner with multi-casting reception
  • 40 station presets
  • controlled and powered through Universal cable connected to Onkyo receiver
  • attached 5-foot cable for Universal Port
  • weight: 1.35 lbs.
  • 5-1/2"W x 1-5/16"H x 5-1/16"D

    Features

Overview: The Onkyo UP-HT1 HD Radio Module allows you to add HD Radio to select Onkyo A/V receivers which feature a proprietary "Universal" port. The UP-HT1 HD Radio Module sends high-quality digital AM/FM audio via a single proprietary cable to your Onkyo receiver's Universal Port. The same convenient cable also powers the tuner unit, saving on cable clutter. The tuner features 40 random presets for FM and AM stations. A rear-side Universal Port input gives you the option of "daisy chaining" a second compatible device, such as the UP-A1 Onkyo Dock for the iPod.

HD Radio Technology: HD Radio technology brings digital radio to conventional analog AM and FM radio stations, with improved sound quality, better reception, and new data services. HD Radio technology provides CD-quality sound for FM stations, and FM-quality sound for AM stations. In addition, FM HD Radio station can transmit multiple programs on the same frequency by using multicast channels. Text data display includes station name, song title, artist name, etc.

Note: For more information about HD Radio technology visit ibiquity.com and hdradio.com

Preset Stations: The Onkyo UP-HT1 HD Radio Module allows you to preset 40 of your favorite HD FM and AM stations. You can name presets for easy identification. the preset name may contain up to 10 characters.

Blend Mode: HD Radio transmissions contain analog and digital signal. If available, the digital signal is used automatically. In areas with poor reception, you may want to choose the analog signal.

RDS Compatible: RDS (Radio Data System) is a method of transmitting data in FM radio signals. In addition to displaying text information, RDS can also help you find radio stations by type (news, sport, rock, etc). The UP-HT1 supports the following types of RDS information: Program Service (PS), Radio Text (RT, and Program Type (PTY).

Remote Control Compatible: You can control the UP-HT1 with your compatible Onkyo home receiver and its remote controller.

Pass-Through Port: The Onkyo UP-HT1 features a rear-panel Universal Port input which gives you the option of "daisy chaining" a second compatible device, such as the Onkyo Universal iPod Dock (UP-A1, sold separately).

Memory Backup: The UP-HT1 uses a battery-less memory backup system in order to retain radio presets and other settings when it is unplugged or in the case of a power outage.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This thing is a great addition. A must have, huge difference from the regular built-in Tuner. Using it with TXSR707. Beware the HD Tuner cannot be used with all models, you need a universal port on your receiver. I also bought the IPOD dock that can piggyback on it. This way they can both be used with only one Universal port on the receiver.
