Marantz

Everything you always wanted in a stereo receiver, except the radio

An integrated amplifier is essentially a receiver without a built-in AM/FM tuner. You get power to drive your speakers, audio controls, and inputs for music source components. Connect an iPod, a computer, a network music player, or any other device that can play Internet radio, and you may find you have no need for an AM/FM radio.

Our take on the Marantz PM8004

by Jim Richardson

Marantz gives you a front-row seat at a general admission price

Marantz based the PM8004 on design elements found in their high-end Reference Series separates. You don't get the fancy champagne gold finish, but you do get an amplifier section optimized for high instantaneous peak current capability. Put on a favorite CD or record album, and you'll feel like you're almost close enough to reach out and touch the artist.

With 70 high-current watts per channel, the PM8004 can plant a bass drum kick right smack in your solar plexus. Its shielded toroidal transformer does such a great job of minimizing noise, you'll savor delicious nuances in quiet sounds, too.

Plenty of inputs and outputs

The PM8004 gives you six analog audio inputs, including a high-grade MM phono input for your turntable. Separate preamp input/line-level output jacks allow you to use the PM8004 as an independent power amplifier or pre-amp for future system expansion.

Two sets of speaker outputs let you conveniently bi-wire a compatible pair of main speakers, or power a second pair of speakers in another room. The Source Direct mode bypasses the balance and tone control circuits to ensure the purest sound possible.

Praise for the Marantz PM8004 from The Absolute Sound

"With 70Wpc, the PM8004 is tonally neutral, clean, clear, transparent, and dynamic into low-efficiency speakers. The preamp section features an excellent moving-magnet phonostage and headphone amplifier, and the circuit has an unusually high number of discrete parts (rather than ICs). High value."

Overview: The Marantz PM8004 is a two-channel integrated amplifier rated at 70 watts x 2 into 8-ohms and 100 watts x 2 into 4-ohms. In both the pre-amp and power amp sections, the PM8004 uses fully-discrete, high speed current feedback circuits for minimal phase shift and better detail resolution. Even the phono input is a fully discrete, constant-current design optimized for moving magnet phono cartridges. Marantz's HDAM SA3 (Hyper Dynamic Amplifier Module) performs critical stage-to-stage signal transfers. Five of the inputs (all but CD) share a buffer circuit to minimize unwanted interactions between the source and amp. The CD input has a separate buffer for even better isolation. The record outs are also buffered for enhanced recording clarity.

    Controls
    Connections

    Features

Chassis Construction: The amplifier's chassis uses a triple-layer bottom plate to insure long-term alignment and vibration control. The unit's front panel uses a combination of aluminum and glass-reinforced resin to create a distinctive three dimensional appearance. Indirect reflecting blue LEDs indicate the input selection.

HDAM (High Definition Amplifier Module): Marantz uses HDAMs instead of standard op-amps, resulting in a more dynamic sound with less susceptibility to radiated noise, heat, and vibration. The V/I converter circuit, the key block of the current-feedback pre-amplifier and power amplifier, is equivalent to the HDAM-SA3 amp-module developed for higher-grade Marantz components.

Momentary-Current Supply: The PM8004's main amp has the capability to momentarily pass 25 amps or more, providing high-powered drive to the speakers.

Short Power Line: To improve the momentary-current supply, the large current line connections are as short as possible, while remaining symmetrical. The individual power supply segments are located on the same heat sinks as the output transistors for quicker response to musical transients.

Discrete Current-Feedback Phono Equalizer: The PM8004 provides an all-discrete, current-feedback phono equalizer optimized for moving magnet (MM) cartridges.

Double-Shielded Toroidal Transformer: This unit is equipped with a toroidal power transformer to minimize vibration and leakage flux, which affects sound quality. The outside is double-shielded, using a core ring and a short ring.

Power Amp Direct: The PM8004 can be used as just an amplifier, with a separate pre-amp. Connecting the outboard pre-amp's output to the Power Amp Direct In input bypasses the PM8004's input selector, balance, tone, and volume controls. In this configuration the amp's signal to noise ratio is 125 dB.

Auto Standby: With the Auto Standby Mode turned on this unit will enter standby mode after approximately 30 minutes (continuous) of no output from the speakers or headphones.

    Controls

Master Power: A mechanical switch turns the main power on/off. When off, the remote has no effect. When on, the remote can be used to switch between on and standby.

Input Selector: A rotary knob on the front panel is used to select the input source (Phono, CD, Tuner, AUX/DVD, Recorder 1, Recorder 2,). Using the remote you can select the input directly.

Bass: A rotary knob adjusts the bass output, +/-10 dB at 50 Hz.

Midrange: A rotary knob adjusts the midrange output, +/-6 dB at 900 Hz.

Treble: A rotary knob to adjust the treble output, +/-10 dB at 15 kHz.

Balance: A rotary knob adjusts the left/right balance.

Speakers: Two buttons allow you to independently select speakers A and B. When using headphones turn them both off; they are not automatically muted.

Power Amp Direct: To engage the Power Amp Direct feature hold this button for three seconds. This bypasses the PM8004's input selector, balance, tone, and volume controls.

Source Direct: When source direct is engaged the bass, midrange, treble, and balance circuits are bypassed.

Remote Control: The supplied wireless remote will control the PM8004 and Marantz CD players, DVD players, tuners, and tape decks.

    Connections

Speakers: The speaker system A and system B outputs are binding posts. They are not 5-way posts, but will accept single banana plugs, pin connectors, and bare wire up to 10 gauge.

Line Inputs: The CD, Tuner, and Aux/DVD inputs have stereo RCA connectors.

Recorder: Recorder 1 and Recorder 2 each have stereo RCA inputs and outputs.

Phono: The stereo RCA phono input will accept moving magnet cartridges. There is a ground terminal beside the phono input.

Pre Out: Stereo RCA outputs feed a powered subwoofer or another amplifier.

Power Amp Direct In: Stereo RCA inputs feed the amplifier section directly from an outboard pre-amp when using the Power Amp Direct feature.

Remote control: An RCA Remote Control input and output are used with other compatible Marantz components; CD player, DVD player, Tuner, etc. This allows the included remote to control the other Marantz components.

Headphone: A standard 1/4" headphone jack is on the front panel. The speaker outputs are not automatically muted when you plug in headphones so the speakers must be manually turned off.

    Marantz PM8004 Integrated Amplifier

Written By Dr. Russell, Dunbar, WV on Thursday, May 09, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am pleased with the Marantz amplifier. The sound quality is excellent, and to me that is the most important criterion. I also like the layout of the controls and the remote, It is very easy to use. Switching from one input source to another is very easy to do.
    Cons:
It would have nice to have another two input source connections.

    Super Integrated

Written By Corelli, Grand Rapids, MI on Tuesday, December 25, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This amp took me by surprise. While I expected good performance I was somewhat blown away at how well it drove a pair of current hungry Magnepan 1.7's. An unexpected pairing to say the least. Very smooth and musical but not without detail. Outperforms similar priced integrateds with more impressive specs. You can't always believe the numbers! A beguiling integrated that is a default recommendation at this price....or even higher.
    Pros:
    Musical!
    Cons:
    Nothing worth mentioning

    A Nice One-Box Solution

Written By Jason, Denver on Friday, August 24, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought the unit to integrate into my living room setup which currently has a Denon AVR receiver. I use the Source Direct to allow the AVr to still handle the HT needs and then turn this unit on for the two channel stereo listening. After upgrading my front speakers, the Denon just was not enough to bring out their best and I wanted a dedicated two channel amp for music.

My speakers are the Ascend Sierra towers with the RAAL tweeters. They are fantastic and they shine with the PM8004 driving them. The highs are bright, but not harsh. The midrange is well-defined and possibly a little warm, which I love. Bass definition is precise. I was surprised to hear the character of the bass notes seem so much more organic on jazz and classical recordings although I cannot

Setup was easy. The binding posts are incredibly robust and show the level of quality that is inherent in this unit. Unless you want to spend twice the price, I really don't think you can get a comparable level of performance from anything else out there.

Sound quality is fantastic with good, clean power. Be warned, however, that this unit will highlight poor quality recordings. I was surprised to hear a distinct difference from one disc to the next. Poor quality recordings need a little tweaking on the DAC and the tone controls on this unit to hide their imperfections. It will definitely steer you towards higher quality source material.

All in all, this is a great option for someone who wante
    Pros:
Sound Quality HT Bypass Tone Controls Value
    Cons:
    None.

    precision, details and power!

Written By Tony, Texas on Saturday, July 21, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

OK so here it is: I started with the NAD M3 amp, and a pair of DEF TEC BP8040ST speakers . The M3 is a very powerful piece and it did sound good. However, for the price I expected more. It just didn't seem clear enough or have the impact I expected. So I called Crutchfields for a return. They are so awesome with returns no questions asked. I also returned the BP 8040ST's too. Next I auditioned the Harman Kardon HK990 with a pair of TSI300 Polk Towers (1/4 the price of the BP8040 ST's) and the PSW 125 Polk sub. I liked the HK990 better than the M3 because the mid frequency bass and musical details sounded a bit better but the high frequency realm seemed a bit muted. So as you can guess, I made the call and Crutchfields took this set back. Next I tried the Marantz PM8004 with the Polk speaker system, no change there. My ears REJOICED! The mid frequency was very tight and precise! The high frequency response was sensational. I listened to my "most played " in my Itunes and I heard all the details. My first listening session lasted five hours straight! I was PARALIZED and could not leave my couch. The Polk speakers had zero listening fatigue too! They are a good match. Oh and did I mention the power output of the PM8004 is enough and then some to spare. I have a 25 X 25 living area that was full of sound. Go Marantz you will not be disappointed! (note: I am running a Cambridge Audio-high end-DAC from my PC with audio quest Golden Gate RCA cables to the PM8004)
    Pros:
Great price for such high quality and performance.
    Cons:
It may not be in stock when you try to buy it. So do not wait!

    Blown Away

Written By BlakeB, Greer, SC on Monday, April 02, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am absolutely stunned at what a difference upgrading to this amplifier has made to the sound of my cds. It's like I'm hearing some of them for the first time. This might be the best $1,000 I've ever spent on stereo equipment! I've got this powering some 10 year-old JBL floor-standing Studio Series speakers and they sound amazing. I could not be happier with this purchase. Thanks, Chuck, for steering me towards the Marantz brand.
    Pros:
Power, Tri-Tone controls, built like a tank, powerful bass response, exceptional clarity and detail
    Cons:
    nothing

    Best for your money

Written By murl, east coast on Wednesday, August 03, 2011

Not quite the power pusher of the seventies or even the eightys... however it is about the best you can get at this price point. Japanese made = quality. just turn the bass up a bit to enrich the sound and you should be fine. Otherwise you need some sort of outboard processer like an eq or something along those lines to get more fullness or push. I listen to all types of music. Hope this helps...

    Quality behind Modesty

Unit is not for those who look for something to show off, but for music lowers. Good enough replacement for my old amp, though sound is a bit "drier".

    Marantz PM8004 review

Written By Charles, Toms River, NJ on Sunday, February 20, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The first thing that pops out at you is how stylish and well built the 8004 is. The feel and look just scream quality and class. It is not just another "black box" stereo. This amp has personality and looks. Marantz seems to be getting back to it's roots of making good looking gear like their big 70's receivers. Even going back to using, and fun to use, tritone controls.

The treble is very nice very smooth airy and easy to listen to.

The midrange and upper bass is were this beast seems to come alive. A tremendous amount of detail and force in the midrange. This amp had dynamics and clarity in spades!!!!!

The bass is very lush and full. This amp has NO problem in the bass department when using either a powered sub or good old fashion passive three way speakers with a 10" woofer. The bass is strong, dynamic and Very well controlled. Not boomy or slow. Very articulate bass and well balanced.

The overall sound I would say about this amp is it is very full sounding, lush and VERY dynamic. Reminiscent of the sound of the big 70's receivers. But with far more clarity and imaging. NO listening fatique here. This amp is made for listening.

I use my Marantz 8004 for almost entirely classical low level listening. So detail and articulate sound at low levels are my main needs. The 8004 carries it off without missing a beat. At low levels this amp maintains it's great dynamic sound.

    Lots of Power, Retro Cool

Written By Frank, Manhattan, KS on Wednesday, February 16, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I use this amp to power my whole house speaker system- 11 speaker pairs. I wanted an amp that looked great, too, because it is on display in my living room. There are many choices for great retro looking, high performance IAs but their price is $ 2K and higher-too much for basically background music playback. The PM8004 was a great choice. Plenty of power, handsome styling, subtle blue LED lighting for active input-looks cool. It is also rather compact, but still hefty and very solidly built. The mid range tone adjustment is a plus-it seems to help today's digital sources sound a little better. I am very pleased with this amp.

    Classic Marantz Sound & Performance!

Written By Cary, Merrick, NY on Thursday, January 06, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After months of research, reading many reviews and making detailed comparisons, I decided on the Marantz PM8004 and bought it from Crutchfield. And it has exceeded my expectations! For the price, this unit delivers detailed smooth sound, plenty of clean quiet power, great looks and features that other manufacturers leave out, such as a phono stage, connections for 2 pairs of speakers and triple tone controls. And it's built like a tank! In summary, if you're looking for true "high-end" sound, sophisticated engineering and design, practical features, value and quality build, it's hard to beat this integrated amplifier!
